To answer a quick question I get a lot, yes, I am still drawing OCs, I just do things at my own pace. These are for practicing, they're not commissions.

Anyways-

I found out why some of my art has been off when I finally finish up on something. Turns out, my graphics tablet makes everything look VERY saturated. I took the longest time messing around with the colors to get both of these to look right.

I decided to draw Aslan twice. Once while paying attention to the color on the hair, and once without paying attention.

I was more strict in my movements for the lineart and actually double checked the colors on my graphics tablet and laptop screen

More relaxed lineart (I kind of like it), but I did not pay attention to the color difference on the hair.

Whatever shows up on my laptop screen (the actual color) will have to be very very bright in color on my graphics tablet because of how saturated it makes things appear. I don't know if anyone else has this issue, but if you do, try to check on multiple screens before coloring anything. I use an XP Pen, I don't know the number/model, but I'll see if this saturation issue can be fixed.

On a brighter note, I do like #2 because of how colorful it came out, it kind of makes Aslan look like she has a natural blush across her face.

An Adventure in Art

AKA - The learning curve.

So, I bought a graphics tablet and downloaded a new program to work with it. It has been an adventure.

The first thing I tried was... horrifying. Then I tried free sketching something. Fred, of course.

I mean, it was recognized by friends as being Fred. So, that could have been worse I suppose. However, I noticed my sketchy style of drawing would make a pretty feather. So, I tried that.

I liked how it turned out. I decided that this meant I should learn how to colour it.

Rainbow of course. What else would I do? And then I excitedly learned to blend in the program!

And, I am happy. Sure, it's nothing that spectacular. I'm sure most people could do better, but I am happy. I am proud.

It is a start.

Here is the tablet I used to for the drawing! 😊

And here my thoughts on it:

So this is an XP-Pen Artist Pro 16TP, A touchscreen graphics tablet! I got it on sale for $498 USD on eBAY. Its original price was $900 but luckily it was on sale for a VERY good price! It has great pen pressure & a battery-free stylus pen with a case. It works more effectively on IbisPaint or ClipStudio Paint if you prefer tilting your canvas, but with the rest of the Art programs such as Medibang, Paint Tool Sai, & FireAlpaca doesn't really work well with touching & Tilting your canvas. It doesn't come with a stand to hold your tablet on the desk sadly, but it does come with an artist glove to prevent smudging on your tablet.

The XP-Pen Tablet overall is great! It's WAY better than buying a 2,000 dollar iPad!

100% Recommended if you are used to using a touch device such as an ipad or Android tablet!

At least stylus pen doesn't need charging with this XP-PEN tablet! 👍

Review: XP-PEN Deco L

As someone who prefers screenless "normal" pen tablets for ergonomical reasons, I'm happy to test this simple graphics tablet provided by XP-Pen.

Let's see how it compares to my old Wacom Intuos 4 M! That is my favorite tablet that I have been using for many years and which is the standard I compare all other tablets to.

The XP-PEN Deco L is small and light, but the active drawing area is very similar to a medium one from either Wacom or the XP-Pen Deco Pro line. So that is perfect! There's also a wireless Bluetooth model available but Bluetooth hasn't always worked well for me in the past, so I chose the cabled version.

It has some keys on the side but I've never really used those anyways (I prefer the keyboard, which is always right above the tablet) so I can't speak to their efficiency. But what I noticed is they have little nubs on them so you can differentiate them by touch alone, which is a nice detail!

The pen is relatively thin and light, a little more so than I'm used to, but that's not really an issue. It would probably be ideal for artists who can't easily hold heavier pens for long.

Importantly for me, it has those 2 keys/buttons on the side -- just like the Wacom pen -- that can be set individually. I use it for Alt (color picker in Photoshop) and right click. 

The installation was super quick and easy (I use Windows 10). Just plug the Deco L in your computer, download the latest driver from the website, install that, restart, and you're ready to draw!

Drawing, painting and sketching is fluid and easy enough in both Photoshop and Clip Studio Paint that I can work with this tablet professionally. The pressure sensitivity is very much like the one from the Wacom Intuos 4 that I'm used to. This is the most important aspect for me.

I also noticed that it works very well as an input device for the PC in general, even in the browser (which some tablets don't work perfectly with, especially when it comes to scrolling and copypasting). I still assume it may vary depending on your OS and browsers.

Who the XP-Pen Deco L is for:

- anyone who wants an affordable basic pen tablet that works perfectly

 - artists who need a mobile tablet that can easily be carried around to places.
