A grass snake swimming across the water of one of the lakes at Felmersham Gravel Pits. Despite their name, grass snakes are often found living in wetlands and hunting for amphibians and fish in the water.
Can you see a little grass snake in this picture? Her head is poking out!
You can tell its a grass snake because they have white markings around their head. Here we call them 'white ears' snake, because it looks like she has little white ears behind her head!
They are not venomous and are completely harmless, and also this one is a baby. She was a pleasure to encounter in the forest and slid away after I took the picture.
