Drumstick anyone? Settled down on the lawn, looked over, and found someone's lost leg. I think this belonged to Melanoplus differentialis, the Differential Grasshopper.

Two-Striped Grasshopper - Melanoplus bivittatus
Though large Grasshoppers are robust, strong, and beautiful to look at, their large size means they are a big, juicy prey item for the creatures of the forest. This individual has taken a bit of damage out here as evident by the torn wings. Clearly this big insect has seen quite a bit in its time. I sincerely hope it wasn’t handled roughly by some trail walkers. Doesn’t really blend in among the stones does it? It’s no Carolina Locust, and yet it shares a habitat with that specie; all the nymphs were hopping around that day! If you look closely, you may even find a few Locust nymphs hiding in plain sight. C’mon big Grasshopper, jump into the greenery and remain hidden! Even with the wings torn, you can still make out the distinctive pair of yellow stripes that give this Grasshopper its name. Otherwise, it might be thought of as just a Red-Legged Grasshopper that is much larger than normal. And even though its large and wings weakened, it can still launch itself with great speed if necessary.
Researching this giant hopper, it appears that green with yellow stripes isn’t the only coloration that is present. This Grasshopper has a few recognized subspecies roaming around, and one of those (Melanoplus bivittatus bivittatus) has a more drab coloration, featuring more brown and grey colors across their body. Such a color variation might be useful in more arid areas or spots with dry or long grasses. Might even be handy among these stones here, but these colorations don’t exactly just appear out of nowhere! Sadly, these Grasshoppers don’t have the ability to auto-camouflage with their environment; they need to make the best with what they have. Fortunately, while their environment may vary, you can bet wherever they go, there will be quantities of food ready to be eaten. In the wilderness they are more manageable, but they apparently can be quite destructive when it comes to farmed grass crops. As generalists, they aren’t too picky about what they eat, and as such they aren’t going to be too picky on where they’ll lay eggs for the next year. If you’re a gardener, keep an eye out for these jumpy bugs, but they shouldn’t be of a major concern, unless you find them eating your flowers!
