Barnaby facts (confirmed by the devs)

Hello! Since I was bored and it's making me so happy to see Barnaby getting so much love lately, I've decided to collect all the info I have about him! I most likely missed something, so if you have info I haven't put here, or got wrong, let me know, ok? ^^

Anyhoo, here we go! **}

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Barnaby, despite his name, is not a barn owl. He's actually a long eared owl.

- Barnaby isn't his real name; he used to have a different one, back in his alive days. One of the drawings featuring him has him surrounded by many names starting with "B".

- Said illustration has "Who am I?" hidden among the names and words such as "Where" and "Help", hinting at something linked to his identity is torturing him.

- It's been stated that Barnaby is the way he is because of a dangerous experiment that corrupted then killed him, changing him completely as a result.

- Barnaby is asexual homoromantic, and is genderfluid: while he goes primarly by "he/him", he accepts any pronoun.

- He considers his Barnaboos as his "little pretties", and often offers help or advice if they need it; of course, his help may not be as helpful as he believes...

- He hates cheesecake.

- He's not a fan of rootbeer neither; he will serve it in his parties, but he personally won't drink it.

- His favorite food is eye scream, and favorite Halloween treat are caramel apples.

- As for ice cream, his favorite flavor is Strawberry Shortcake.

- Speaking of food, yeah, he doesn't need to eat, nor sleep. But still likes doing it anyway.

- Barnaby is a confirmed sleepyhead. He naps a lot, but never in an ordinary position, or in his bed; he tends to sleep in various gravity bending position, especially upside down.

- Meaning, yes, when Billie comes to steal his gem, he was sleeping!

- And when he sleeps, he apparently snores and hoots.

- While hugging him would result in a kill from him, Ash confirmed Barnaby is a hugger! Hugging him would still involve him squeezing or stabbing you to death, tho'. And he'd feel both soft and slimy to the touch.

- Barnaby is around 10-11ft tall, and with his size-shifting abilities, he can be any height he wants; when he was alive tho', he's as tall as Aristotle, more or less.

- He doesn't need glasses anymore, but sometimes will wear them because they make him look smart. They also tend to follow the eyes' movements.

- Barnaby is very emotional: while it won't stop him from trying to kill you, he will cry if he sees you cry. Ironically, he would comfort you until you feel better. Then he'll kill you.

- It's been confirmed that Barnaby's biggest fear has "already come true".

- His tears are orange, just like his eyes.

- Barnaby is not one to open his heart easily, but the moment he does, there's many ways to reach it. He's quite romantic, tho' not in the usual way: if you gave him a dead rat, he'd consider it a very romantic gesture!

- It's been stated he doesn't have a partner now, but in life, "maybe".

- When it comes to children, it's been confirmed he'd be the best caregiver alongside Dutch, althought for him "it's complicated".

- He apparently had a child of his own, if the picture posted about him during "Father's Day" is any indication. What happened to the little one hasn't been revealed yet.

- Apparently he's the least judgemental character in BBU!

- If he had a TV, it'd be old timey, and he'd watch something really random. Like ducks.

- Barnaby loves small critters; Ash specifically mentions they always linked him with guinea pigs. And indeed, Barnaby had a science guinea pig co-worker once, that turned into an actual guinea pig because of a reckless experiment, and he took care of them.

- He's able to control reality; it's unclear if it's his gem's doing, or his magic power as a ghost.

- In any case, he's now the most powerful character in the game

- Back in his alive days, he was a magic researcher and scientist.

- He actually owned the gem before he turned into a ghost. He even experimented on it, and it's suggested that actually sealed his fate.

- A lot of songs from Oingo Boingo and Lemon Demon fit him: Ash specifically mentioned "Weird Science" as really "Barnabycore"

- Barnaby is autistic: he stims by hooting and flapping his wings when he's excited.

- When he's scared or nervous, he tends to cover himself with his wings.

- Katie said that, if he were a candy, he'd be a sour blueberry.

- Barnaby lives in his own dimension, with his own mansion and everything. And he can travel between realities. Although one comment from Katie suggests he's trapped in there, but it's too early to say for sure.

- According to the devs, he was inspired by Weird Al Yankovic, Lewis from Mystery Skulls and Discord from MLP.

- No, he wasn't inspired by Snatcher, since the development of BBU has lasted longer than A Hat in Time. The two of them canonically know each other tho': only problem is, Snatcher hates Barnaby's guts and finds him too clingy, while the owl adores him.

- He canonically knows Wally Darling from "Welcome Home" and Kira from "Far Fetched" too, since he can travel between realities.

- Barnaby has his guests come to his home by portals that pop just below them. He apparently has kidnapped people before, every once in a while.

- He'd get along well with Dutch.

- It's left vague whether he knows Fantoccio or not.

- He actually has never met Arthur nor Aristotle before the game.

- In any case, he'd find Aristotle really funny, and wouldn't take them seriously.

-- Barnaby is aware of the player, and can break the 4th wall. And that's why only he can use Twitter.

- Whenever he writes on Twitter, hE WRiTSE LIkE THIS!!!

- Barnaby is REALLY mischeavous, and finds no problem in cheating in games. But if YOU cheat, then he gets ticked off.

- This suggests he's also a sore loser.

- Judging by his expression in the cutscene, he doesn't like being interrupted.

- It's been confirmed he smells like meldew. :P

- He could fake glitching out, then attack the moment you come to check out what's going on with him.

- He HATES party crashers. Also scarecrows: not good for conversations. And he's not interested in their crops.

- He can play the organ: Katie even suggested that if you hear it in the background of his chapter, that's him playing it.

- He was a young prodigy, back when he was alive!

- Don't be fooled by his goofy antics: he's very smart, still loves making experiments and can speak a lot of languages.

- Ironically, he hates skulls: he finds them icky.

- He was 25-26 when he died; he's been dead for 100+ years.

- Time is very important for him: that's why there's so many clocks in his parlor. It's been suggested he sees partying as a way to keep track with time.

- Despite that, Barnaby himself in the contest video has briefly stated he tends to forget what year it is.

- There's tons of pictures in his manor: all of them depict him, suggesting he's good at painting.

- Katie has noted that Barnaby "remembers everything". When asked if there's something he'd rather forget, they stated that "what he wants and what he needs are very different things".

- His family is "infinite", apparently. Then again, one of his very early descriptions stated he's got no friends nor family to speak about...

- He's been described as "self interested"

- When asked which character had the most trauma, without giving hints about being traumatized, Katie confirmed Barnaby as the answer, even stating his story makes them the saddest, alongside Fanto's.

- His favorite color is pink!

- He can change himself into lots of animals, and can even clone himself!

- When asked if he can talk to his alive self, Katie said it's "technically possible".

- Back when he was alive, he was noted as a dork and a hardworker, so much so he'd even pull one-nighters before making speeches for his research. Katie jokingly suggested that's why he parties so much: it's to make up for lost time!

- He had a different way of speaking, back when he was alive. And his icks were probably different as well.

- When he gets overwhelmed, he has a shutdown, and goes completely silent.

- At early stages, Barnaby was supposed to be a bug.

- The moment his design as a ghost was chosen, he went through a lot of palette options, like a pale blue color like he came from "The Haunted Mansion", or all colorful like "Dia de los Muertos". Ultimately they settled for his currently shadowy look because, not only it's easier to animate, it was in line with his backstory.

- Barnaby can melt. It's still unclear what triggers such a reaction, but some pictures hint that it's tied to his psychological state.

- Barnaby has been noted that he can talk fancy, but he's not eloquent.

- His favorite dance is the charleston!

- Ash has stated that in the game he is going to be depicted doing something similiar to "singing himself to sleep".

- Apparently he still makes pellets from his mouth. Dead or not, he's still an owl.

- He often puts emphasis on words, sometimes even making his bowtie spin.

- In the latest Twitter post featuring him, when you decode the garbled message, you can read: "Barnaby lies Along in his thoughts, Resting On the floor Neglected". Not only this hints at his turmoil, it also hides the word "BARON". It's unclear if it's his name, a title he possessed, or someone or thing else entirely connected to him.

- He loves recieving scretches on his head.

- Barnaby can cook, but he'll more often than not leave that to the Barnaboos.

- He's not that interested in gardening, even tho' he owns a greenhouse.

- He'd enjoy playing "Luigi's Mansion"!

- In Super Smash Bros. he'd main Meta Knight, even relating to him.

- He'd happily accept smoochies, apparently!

- His favorite party game is "Pin the tail on the owl".

- If you are his friend, he'd consider it even more of a reason to stay in the manor and never leave!

- He has claimed that he's used to give himself self love and compliments, since no one else does it. That, and his tendency to ask others for hugs or if they need a hug to calm down, suggests he's affection starved.

- He tends to react to compliments from fans by smiling bashfully, or happily shouting that he's popular.

- Katie stated that his favorite movie would be something unexpected, like "Marnie & Me" or "Up".

- Barnaby can see everything from the eyes of the plushies that look like him. So, if you bought one... watch out...

- Among his early designs, he also looked like a completely different owl, tall and austere looking, who was the guardian of the forest. It was changed because the devs wanted a goofy boss that could stand out among the others.

- Having said that, it seems Barnaby was the last boss to be officially revealed, and initially the game only had Elaine, Dutch and Fantoccio as the main bosses.

- Barnaby LOVES puns. A good deal of the lines he says when you get defeated in his chase contain a pun.

- You try being slick by stating you want to die of old age? Too bad: Barnaby will make you age rapidly. Despite that, Katie confirmed he doesn't have time related powers...

- Katie and Ash confirmed Barnaby can fly. And such a sight is apparently really hilarious.

- Barnaby loves shiny trinkets: if he sees a sparkly thread, he'll fixate on it and will follow its movements. It's like with a cat following a laser.

- Barnaby has teeth; they're orange and sharp, and come out when he's ticked off, or especially devious.

- When he was alive, he only used he/him pronouns. He became comfortable with all pronouns after he died. He's always been interested in men.

- This goes without saying, but still: he operates on cartoon logic. He can use both his wings AND his feet as hands. Even both feet can act as hands, even when they appear off camera. How? Because it's Barnaby and he can do anything he sets his mind into!

Summary: Lloyd and Morro get stuck.

Warnings: They're probably out of character because I'm really tired rn.

Prompt: Travel | Realm

Extra: Basically, Lloyd and Morro begrudgingly work together to get the Realm Crystal back. Takes place while Lloyd and Morro are dimension hopping in the Season 5 finale.

Lloyd and Morro got spat out of another portal, and Lloyd swung his leg in a desperate effort to get the Realm Crystal.

Clngg!

The two glanced at each other, the abnormally large gem glistened on the rocky ground, just out of reach. The pair scrambled to grab it before each other, limbs thrashing in an effort to beat the other.

Lloyd's hand reached towards the crystal, and-

Morro dragged him back by his ankle, using it as momentum to propel him forwards.

Only for a fucking bird to snatch it.

"What the- OH COME ON!" Lloyd groaned.

Morro launched into the air in hot pursuit of the bird, Lloyd just a beat behind him using Airjitzu.

The stupid feathered thing darted around, as if playing a game with the green-themed people.

A cliff came up ahead, and the bird folded its wings into a dive. Lloyd landed on the edge as the ghost sped over, using his wind powers to push himself faster.

The blonde peered over the edge warily, watching Morro chase aggressively after the avian thief. Eventually, the two went far enough away that it was difficult even for Lloyd's hybrid eyes to see, so he-

Hesitated.

Was he really about to jump off a cliff in a realm he's never been in before? What if gravity worked differently? He took a deep breath, and then jumped off the cliff.

Lloyd focused, intentionally avoiding the fact that he was falling to his possible death ohmyFirs- and summoned his elemental dragon. He swiftly glided after the ghost and the bird.

Speaking of the two, Morro yelled outdated profanities at the avian creature as the two disappeared into the flora.

"You bescumbering wretch!"

Lloyd faltered, unsure what "bescumbering" meant. He shook his head, that is a question for later. He nudged his dragon to hurry, and it obeyed.

He dove into the first opening he could find into the plume of orangey leaves. There, he spotted Morro standing on a tree(?) branch as he glared above him.

Lloyd desummoned his dragon as he stuck the landing next to the ghost.

Standing next to Morro somewhat made his skin crawl. Maybe it's from the possession, or it's just a ghost thing.

"Whatcha glaring at?" Lloyd asked. It felt weird to be casual with Morro. The blonde really needed to find out where the Realm Crystal went, but why would Morro tell him where-

"That... fopdoodle of a bird is hiding up there," Morro growled.

The younger snorted. Fopdoodle? Really? That's such a weird word.

"Oh ha ha. Laugh it up. You wanna go get the Realm Crystal? Be my guest," Morro looked dead serious.

...oh my FSM.

Lloyd cracked up more, staring to full on wheeze and he clutched his stomach and curled forwards.

Morro's anger seemed to have amped up alongside his confusion. "What are you even laughing at, you fribble?"

Lloyd fucking cackled. "What-" cut off by giggling, "the h-hell is a fribble?"

He resumed his cackling, his balance swayed as he risked falling off the branch multiple times.

The blonde slowly came down from his giggling high as the gears in Morro's brain turned.

"...oh," was all he said once it clicked.

"Oh, what?" Lloyd questioned.

Morro sighed ,"I've been using really old slang this entire time."

Lloyd gaped, "Wait, that's what that was? I thought you were just saying gibberish!"

"...why in all of the 16 realms would I say gibberish?" Morro squinted at the younger.

"I- uh- well sometimes Jay does, so I usually chalk up weird non-scientific words to just be random gibberish."

Morro looked 2 seconds away from punching someone. Probably me, Lloyd realized and slightly shifted away from the ghost.

"So, uh- where did the Realm Crystal go?" Lloyd asked.

Morro glared at the teen before reluctantly pointing upwards. "That imbecilic bird's hiding with it, and whenever you go near it the thing either tries to bite you or poop on you."

"...ohhhkayyy. Is that what- uhh, what was the word- oh yeah, is that what 'bescumbering' means?" Lloyd asked.

Morro gave Lloyd a look. "The latter."

Silence blanketed the two.

"Uhh, sooooo. How are we- ew, that felt weird to say- going to get the Realm Crystal back?"

"Who said we were going to get it back? I will get it back and leave you here so I can-"

"-conquer Ninjago beside my Master, I know. You've given thise speech before, Breezy, no need to repeat yourself for the thousandth time," Lloyd rolled his eyes.

Morro used a gust of wind to shove him off the branch. Lloyd yelped before a soft 'thud' enunciated his landing onto the forest-like floor.

"Rude," Lloyd muttered before jumping at the sight of Morro as he crashed next to him. Said ghost looked done with everything.

"As stubborn as I am, I will admit that I..." Morro's words trailed off into a low enough voljme that Lloyd couldn't hear him.

"Uhh, what?" he asked.

"I-" Morro sighed angrily, "I need your help."

"Huh?"

"I said I need your help, damnit!"

"I know, I heard you the second time," Lloyd had a smug grin painted on his features, until Morro shoved a bunch of leaves into his face via the wind.

"So, what's the plan, oh 'great Green Ninja'," Morro snarked.

"Well, we need to figure out where the crystal is first, so we can get it."

"The bird's sitting on it."

"Well that's- a problem. But at least we know where it is!...

Wait, how do you know that?"

"The wind. And the fact that, before it tried to bite me I saw it underneath the bird."

"Wait, you're a ghost. Why don't you just possess the bird?"

"..." Morro facepalmed. "How the fuck did I not think of that."

"Well then go do it, genius!"

"Shut up, fribble."

"What's a fribble???"

Morro shot up to the bird before Lloyd could get an answer.

A loud squawk, flapping noises, a grunt, and the ghost landing on the ground again suggested-

"It didn't work."

"Yeah, I guessed so after the offended squawk."

"So what next?"

"Uhh, decoy and thief?"

"One gets shat on while the other steals? Sure."

"Alright, then who-"

"You're getting shat on."

"Wha- WHY ME?"

"Because I said so, and poop has water content."

"Does that mean I could kill you with poop?"

"Not before I suffocate you to death."

The two climb up the tree, and Lloyd starts bugging the bird as Morro creeped up in the bird's blind spot.

Hey, this is going to well-

"ACK! IT BIT ME!"

And there it is.

Morro snagged the gem, but before he could portal away-

"Duck!"

The bird fucking shat.

Lloyd darted towards Morro, and activated the Realm Crystal.

Now back to our regularly scheduled "Lloyd Fight's His Abuser/Trauma Giver TM".

If you couldn't tell by the end, it's like 1:41 am and I'm tired.

I really want the Ever After to somehow get involved in the final battle for several reasons but one of them is that I want the Genial Gems to fight alongside and possibly even save Jaune's life. I feel like that'd be really sweet to see them all charging in to save their hero's life.

This would be freaking adorable, but also I’m imaging the scene from Return of the King where the ghost army freaking SWARMS an Oliphaunt like a school of piranhas

I want the finale to be Gravity Falls style where fucking everyone ever shows up to help in the battle

Ya know, because the whole theme of this show is that working together is the real way to defeat evil

So I've always thought the Identity Crisis episode of Danny Phantom, with the two Dannys, was kind of silly (idk, feels like the concept should be treated with more gravity, like when Steven Universe gets his gem ripped out, you get it) but thinking about it in the context of a protective ghostly obsession, it's fascinating.

Like, Danny's "ghost half" takes the ghostly obsession with him, and it becomes everything to him. His purpose is to protect others, he doesn't exist for anything else. He succumbs to this unnatural drive, can't care about anything else. He's a ghost now, and ghosts need to feed into what they are to exist.

Meanwhile, "human" Danny has lost his purpose. The show has him goof off, which works, but I'm imagining him becoming increasingly lethargic, ironically dead-eyed, just kind of going through the motions. He doesn't want to fight ghosts, even if he could, but something is so clearly missing from his life.

Neither of them seem right. The ghost is becoming more and more otherworldly, out of touch, no one can bring themselves to meet his toxic geeen gaze. The human is apathetic, not even sad, just, not all there. Reckless with his relationships and his secrets, snarky in a way that's more hurtful than funny.

And then they come back together, and for the first time in days, he's Danny. He's got spark and life and empathy, and it doesn't hurt to look at him anymore, in either form. And that's how they realize that he can't just be one or the other, not anymore. He needs both sides of himself, maybe not to exist, but to be the person he is, and wants to be.

She tried, she really did, but that was mostly at the start. By ten, she seemed to have forgotten her son even had a birthday, too lost in the drugs to see him waiting for her to notice. But…but today was his thirteenth birthday.

My thoughts on my own fic? Well yeah I really like this one! I was sad to see that it didn't really connect to a ton of people, but it also just felt very soft when I was writing it? Plus I wrote it for one of my dearest friends, so ultimately I really like it still <333

God, this fic is fun!!! I loved watching this one get put together, an the final (well almost final) product is such a joy to read. There's a really cool twist in this one I won't spoil, but I have to admit I've been on the edge of my seat waiting for an update!! I really really need to know how this one endsssss

Oh wait, what am I doing! Empires s1 gravity falls au.

Gem and Fwhip as the pines twins, OBVIOUSLY. Gem is Dipper, journals and studying the oddities of the town. Fwhip is Mabel, instead of a crush of the week he has a victim of the week (these have resulted in explosions on multiple occasions).

Scott and Xornoth as Ford and Stan respectively. Exor as Bill. Xornoth went to help from Scott because he kept seeing Exor, but they argued and Scott was hit with the rune sword. Xornoth is trying to bring him back.

Pearl and Sausage as Wendy and Soos. Full WRA baybe!!! Sausage is strangely wise, always has good advise hidden under all his silly words, and Pearl comes from a family of kickass farmers. Gem definetly has a squish on her.

Joey is Gideon and wants a) Xornoth to marry him and b) the tale of the stags, the grimoire, and the book of prophesies (the journals). He has a deal with Exor so he can possess Xornoth. He HATES the twins for "getting in the way of him and Xornoth". Also cuz he finds out Gem has the grimoire much earlier than Gidion finds out Dipper has a journal, that too.

Lizzie is old man mcgucket, making a "deal with destiny" to help Scott in his studies in exchange for collecting cool stuff from their findings. But in a tragic lab accident, she loses her memories, of her friends and even her brother.

Speaking of brother, Jimmy is the most pathetic wet rag version of Pacifica you could come up with. His family outcasted Lizzie and claim to descend from the founders of the town. But Jimmy? He's uncool, clumsy, unathletic, only charismatic in a sort of pittying way, perfect victim for Fwhip's pranks. However, the twins don't REALIZE how powerful Jimmy's family is until after a prank gone too far.

Joel like, kinda plays the Robbie roll? He was dating Lizzie before the whole memory thing and he makes that Xornoth (impersonating Scott, who lost her memories)'s problem. But he doesn't really believe any of the supernatural crap, so he thinks Scott told Lizzie to break up with him and ghost him by pretending to not know who he is.

And the knomes? There's only one knome. The rest are wolves. The knome is Shrub and she's much nicer than the ones in the show. She helps the twins on most of their adventures, basically whenever they need a small army.

Katherine is the town newspaper, she's got all the gossip but she will never disclose from where (flowers talk to her, it's fine). She's always the first person Gem and Fwhip go to if they're investigating or need info. There's no real equivalent if her in the show, maybe Toby if you REALLY stretch.

And then Pix is Blendin. Once again, much nicer than in the show, he doesn't take the twins into a death game, but he's just as easily set off. He's on the run from the Vigil, like Time Baby, and while Katherine knows everything about the people of the town, Pix knows a about the monsters. Unlike Blendin though, he is from the past, an ancient civilization (don't ask how they figured out time travel).

Did I make this au specifically to have Bubbles as Waddles? Maybe. What's it to you?

I decided to share the first batch of stories I'm planning to write. They are in no particular order and aren't the only ones planned to be written. I just need to control myself lol.

Warring Covens

A mystery boy catches Mabel's fancy and Dipper is suspicious of the boy's identity, so he and the rest of their friends head out to uncover it. Meanwhile, Stan is unsure of the idea of his niece dating, remembering his own failed relationships, lamenting his woes to an uninterested, though caring, Ford.

Maiden of the Blue Water

While on a family outing at Lake Gravity Falls, the twins learned of the legend of a tragic spirit haunting the waters of the lake and investigate its claims. As this was happening, the Crystal Gems, under the orders of Preston Northwest, were on the hunt for a lake monster destroying fishing boats. Meanwhile Stan and Ford attempt to have some brotherly bonding.

The Beast of Gravity Falls

Every town has their own tradition, an event unique to them. In Gravity Falls, it's Summerween. It's like Halloween, but in the summer. As people stock up candy, get costumes ready, and light up Jack O' Melons, a sleeping creature will wake. The Beast of Gravity Falls

The Secrets of Rose Quartz

If there is anyone in Gravity Falls, in all of Roadkill County, that deserved praise and recognition, that was Rose Quartz. She had done more for the community than any of the Northwest patriarchs combined. Her kind and loving nature had earned her the devotion of the residents of Gravity Falls, even when she was gone. Even so, there will always be those who would think that someone as nice and perfect as Rose Quartz has something to hide. Surprisingly, it is her son who goes looking for those answers.

Old Flames

Two past partners reunite with Stan. One wants to rekindle something, the other wants to burn him. And Stan isn't the only one finding himself ruminating on the past. While Ford couldn't care less about romance of any kind, he often reminisces about past bonds... And the bridges he burned.

After a hazy night at a frat party, Louis wakes up to blue eyes and the shocking realization that he had met his soulmate, without any sober recollection. Seven years pass where Louis comes to terms with the fact that he'll never know who his soulmate is. Then one fated summer, a beautiful green-eyed photographer arrives at Louis' workplace, with promises of endless laughter and a familiar feeling in Louis' heart.

Featuring a lovely cup of OT5, a road trip down the coast, and a scene where Harry eats a whole head of lettuce. Don't ask why.

Gem always loved the moon. If she happened to stay up late, working on some kind of project, she tried to take the time to just look at the moon. This is what a moon was supposed to look and feel like- no gravity issues, not getting bigger, just quietly vibing in the sky.

One night she was helping lug some shulker boxes around with Pearl. As per usual, she stopped briefly to smile up at the dark sky and the bright moon.

“Oh, isn’t it so pretty Pearl?”

“Gem why did you stop?” Pearl came back around a corner, glancing up. “What is?”

“Why, the moon, of course!” Gem replied, jokingly scandalized. “I mean, shouldn’t you love the moon, since you’re named after it?”

“Not really.” Pearl pointed to where the boxes needed to go. “I mean, it’s just a moon. I’m the better moon anyway. The pearlescent type.”

“Gee, I didn’t think you’d have beef with the moon.” Gem said curiously. “I kinda thought you were like related to the moon or something. Oh wait, I know, it’s because you’re an alien!” She giggled.

“Gem, I’m not an alien!” Pearl was not laughing, and in fact Gem could see her flip from her sword to her axe and back again in agitation. “Stop saying that! I’m not kidding.”

“Pearl…” Gem reached for her, but Pearl stormed off before she could say anything else.

Upset, Gem flew over to Impulse’s place. She literally flew into him as he was coming outside onto the bridge.

“Impulse, Pearl just yelled at me.” Gem couldn’t decide if she felt upset or confused. Probably both.

“Oh Gem, I’m sorry.” Impulse looked sad and gave her a hug. “Pearl’s been acting super weird recently. She yelled at me too the other day for talking about the moon from last season.”

“She stormed off because I joked that she was an alien!” Gem sat down on the edge of the bridge. “I mean, if it upsets her, I should stop joking about it, and I will. But she’s also not acting like herself. It’s… does Pearl not seem like the Pearl you remember from Boatem?”

Impulse sat down beside her. “No, yeah, literally, this isn’t my Pearly. I spent all of Boatem and falling through the Boatem hole with her. She loved the moon! She was the only one chill with it, kept insisting it was her cousin coming to visit!”

“She definitely was considering threatening me with something sharp, and not in a fun way.” Gem said, frowning. “It just doesn’t make any sense. I’ve known her even longer then you have, and she’s never been like this.”

“Impulse! Gem! Hello, hello, hello!” A cheery voice interrupted their depressing conversation, and they turned around to see Zedaph clip-clopping up the stairs towards them. He smiled at them, and despite it all, seeing the goofy redstoner made them smile too. “Impulse! Just the dwarf I was looking for, because I came specifically to your house! And Gem, I’m sure your brain would be useful in this as well!”

“What’s up, Zed?” Impulse got to his feet and slapped Zedaph on the back amicably.

“Well, it’s about the moon.” Gem and Impulse froze. Zedaph, obliviously looking at his notes, continued after a long silence. “Sorry, I was reading my notes. Yeah, the moon is acting weird.”

“What do you mean by weird, Zed?” Gem asked cautiously. She could feel a low panic simmering through her body.

Zed looked up and laughed. “Oh my, you two look like you’ve seen a ghost! No, no, not like whatever happened last season- I wasn’t paying attention, I don’t remember that- this is different. The moon patterns are behaving super weirdly.”

“Okay, let me take a look.” Impulse said after several calming breaths. He took the papers in Zed’s hand.

“I’ve been marking the position of the moon since the season started- been thinking of some kind of Zedvancement to do with that big sky orb square thingie. But it’s been all over the sky, slowly. Can’t make heads or tails of it.” Zed remarked over Impulse’s shoulder.

“Huh…” Impulse was tracing the moon’s path over time with his finger. “Gem, do you notice anything familiar about these patterns?”

Gem watched Impulse’s finger trace, and then gasped. “It’s letters! H-E-L-P. Help! It’s help.” A chill went through her suddenly, and she looked across the bridge to see Pearl watching the gathered group from on top of her mountain.

“Help?” Impulse murmured, brain clearly whirring. Zed looking at it too, thoughtfully chewing on Impulse’s sleeve.

“Hey Impulse?” Gem asked cautiously.

“Yeah?”

“Do you remember how we were just talking about how strangely Pearl was acting?”

“Yeah…” Impulse looked up from the document, now studying Gem. “Why?”

“What if… hey Impulse, what if that’s not our Pearl?” Gem had her eye on Pearl on the hill.

“Help…” Impulse murmured. “Gem, if you think that’s not Pearl, then could she be…” He looked up at the sky, at the moon that was just starting to rise.

“Oh my god Pearl’s trapped in the moon!” Gem gasped.

“Pearl is the moon. She said help, oh my god that makes so much sense!” Impulse clutched the papers to his chest.

“Guys?” Zed spit out Impulse’s sleeve. “You do realize how ridiculous you both sound, right? Like, I’m me, Zedaph, and I’m saying this is too much. There is no way a person can be the literal moon!”

“Maybe not…” Impulse muttered. Gem shivered, watching Impulse trace the same word over and over again.
