Minor throwaway sentence in a book on corruption I've just finished was talking about 1930s gangsters and about certain organisations in Chicago which the author stated were more ethnically diverse than the Italian mafia, and whose members were said to have included 'Irish, Welsh, Italian, and Jewish' gangsters.
Now call me sheltered but I've seen MANY Italian American gangsters immortalised in film, I've heard of the Jewish mob, and the police Irish American gangs but I have yet to see a movie about the Welsh mob. As a rule I don't go in for gangster movies but I feel there's an unfilled niche here and also I need more info.
#Might delete this in a bit#On a more serious note given the context of the Great Depression and slumps in the coal mining districts of Britain#I can see why Welsh people who emigrated to America might be form an impoverished immigrant community targeted by organised crime#And possibly my surprise comes from outdated national stereotypes and the fact that popular stereotypes of 1930s gangsters#Rarely include immigrant groups that are largely Protestant (at least in the US- in Glasgow and London it's a different story)#Makes me wonder if all those Catholic Aesthetics that directors who make movies about Italian and Irish mobsters are so fond of#Would play the same with Meredith Davies who may be a crook but at least he regularly attends the Methodist chapel#And is a teetotaller and a fixture in various choirs#Welsh accents are often quite soft too I think I'd be fucking terrified of a Welsh gangster in a movie tbh#To be fair real life organised crime obviously encompassed people from all walks of life I'm more interested in movie depictions here#'More Welsh representation!' 'Ah yes how about as gangsters?' 'Er...'#Less surprised if I come across Scots because eventhough they're privileged in the US English media does seem to view Scottish accents#As threatening so Scots often get roped in to play tough guys and gangsters and villains in all sorts of media#And often they will get an Englishman to play a Scot and Scots to play Eastern Europeans which is also weird#But that's off topic; I am not however used to Welsh villains

is MDR1 but it always shocks me when people say BCs weren't bred for sheepdog trials when that's like.. a huge part of the BC's history, that they were the selection of the regional working sheepdogs "collies" that people competed with and literally developed sheepdog trials for the og sporter dogs but also yeah mdr1 isn't really.. in BCs, like it's so quoted as MUST TEST FOR IT! and there's been one case i've heard of with it, and the dog wasn't even confirmed to have it through dna testing, just that's what the owner said it died from.

when will said it was "strange knowing who it was this whole time" and "he's hurt, he's hurting, but he's still alive" was he not talking about henry? am i insane? did i misinterpret that scene? why are we acting like will is connected to anyone other than henry bro what is Happening 😭
that was henry that shaped the mind flayer into that spider-like form and it was henry that used it to possess will and it was henry's thoughts that will was experiencing against his will and it's henry that he's still feeling because the connection/"vecna's curse" hasn't been broken. they physically extracted the mind flayer from will's body, yes, but his connection to henry was never broken. henry can't exercise complete and total control over people without the mind flayer's power, which is why will has free will over his body but his mind remains connected to henry.
the characters, and by extension the viewers, thought it was the mind flayer behind everything, because they didn't know what season four revealed to us.
henry wanted to control will's mind and body—a complete and entire violation of everything will is. that was Not the mind flayer, and they tell us that more than once. with all love and respect what are some of you on about because you're starting to make me feel like my memory is genuinely broken or something lmao like i thought.... the big reveal was that it's always been henry? they literally say that? eleven, henry, and will all confirm it? the mind flayer was not a separate entity acting alone... thus will has beef with henry most of all because henry's violation of his mind and body is still ongoing... Where Are You Guys Getting Your Information From 😭 hELP
will's rape—because that's what possession is, he never consented to having his mind and body controlled by anyone else—is an important part of stranger things; both to the general plot and will's character. to say that will only has beef with the mind flayer and not henry is reducing what henry did to him and reassigning blame that very much falls on henry's shoulders. henry was controlling the mind flayer and henry is the one still in will's mind. henry used the mind flayer to have control over will. henry and will are connected. the show literally tells us that over and over again. when you decide to needlessly reassign blame, not only are you misunderstanding and misconstruing the plot, but you're also... not understanding what happened to will at all. like, what really happened to him and how that's used in the show.
henry very likely was the one that kidnapped will. henry is the one that will has a psychic connection to. henry is the one that raped will / possessed him if you prefer that term instead and used the mind flayer to do it. henry is the one that will still knows like the back of his hand, because henry is the one that's still in his head. it's not the mind flayer. it's henry. please stop saying that will doesn't have more than enough reason to want to kill his ass. please!!!
#rape tw#rape mention#triggering myself on main like a fucking dumbass but the worms in my brain are holding on to this one n gnawing at it#am i insane am i genuinely having memory problems am i the weird one#eleven and will can both kill his ass but don't act like henry isn't the one that ruined his life i'm—#i feel very strongly abt this bc i just feel like you Can't reassign blame in rape cases u have to see it for what it is#they're literally fake but. please don't try to absolve bad people like that#they're characters not people i know but. please don't do that lol. henry is a bad guy for many reasons and eleven and will BOTH have#reasons to merc his ass. we can say that it's okay we're not taking anything away from eleven by acknowledging the plot and the#actions that the characters have made like i promise u no one is forgetting eleven who is literally the biggest character on the show#it doesn't matter but also it Does matter to me bc we don't always see rape victims on tv shows or movies that are treated like will#and it just makes me sad when like. stuff that happens in real life (abusers getting off scot free) happens in fiction. bc its like ok cool#not even in the fictional world can there be justice huh lmao cool cool cool very cool and awesome and great love it#actually no im gonna say it bro yes henry tried to kill eleven twice but like. he literally raped will. so yeah i think will deserves the#final blow bro idc. idc idc idc will has to live with that for the rest of his life he has to remember what it felt like and what all he#did under henry's control like. he deserves it. let him maul his ass let him fireball him to the pits of hell idc idc everyone else go home

May 30th 1291 saw claimants to the Scottish throne meet King Edward I of England at Norham on Tweed to resolve succession, this became known as The Great Cause.
Following a period of prosperity for the Scottish Kingdom, tragedy struck when Alexander III died and left no heir. The nobles of Scotland agreed to oversee the coronation of Alexander’s granddaughter Margaret, Maid of Norway, as well as selecting a regent to rule and a husband for her to marry.
In the meantime, in order for the kingdom to function properly, ‘Guardians of the Realm’ had to be appointed.
The men chosen were: the Bishops Fraser of St Andrews and Wishart of Glasgow, the barons John Comyn of Badenoch and James Steward, and the Earls of Buchan and Fife. It was agreed amongst the Guardians that the nobility of the realm would swear an oath of loyalty of the young queen, but in the meantime they would rule in the name of the Scottish crown.
Tragedy struck when Margaret died travelling from Norway to Scotland. This left the future of the Scottish Kingdom in jeopardy as without her, the Treaty of Birgham was meaningless.
Edward I was informed, by the Bishop of St. Andrews, that Robert Bruce and the Earls of Athol and Mar were scheming and that war was a distinct possibility. The bishop asked Edward for assistance in order to stop a civil war. Bishop Fraser clearly favoured Balliol, but Bruce and his followers appealed to Edward by writing the 'Appeal of the Seven Earls.’
At Norham, Edward showed his intentions of being made Overlord of Scotland, demanding that the Scots make him their feudal overlord before he would make any judgement on who would become the new King of Scots.
The Scots were worried because Edward had a large military presence with him. The Guardians replied stating that only a king could deal with such a demand which could only happen after Edward had selected one. Edward wrote to English monasteries asking them to search for legal evidence in their documents for English overlordship over Scotland. He also threatened to blockade Scottish ports with his navy and summoned men to form an army.
Fourteen claimants petitioned Edward for the throne of Scotland, but two emerged as having serious claims – John Balliol and Robert Bruce. To make sure that he became overlord of Scotland, Edward demanded that all the claimants accept this before he would pass judgement. This agreement is known as the 'Award of Norham’.
This was an important moment because the claimants acknowledged Edward’s overlordship; by giving him legal possession of the kingdom, Scotland was his to give freely away.
The original contenders for the crown are seen in the image below, the second pic are the ruins of Norham Castle.

i was listening to a podcast this morning and they were talking about extinct animals and for one thing it made me go why doesnt the doctor save extinct animals. dont talk to me about tHe LaWs Of tImE you cant tell me the end of the dodo is that much of a fixed point that you cant jump back a century or two and catch some dodos in a net (theyre really easy to catch thats why they were so easy to hunt to extinction theyre not afraid of being predated) and give them to a zoo now for preservation. anyway so thats one.
for two they told me about the greak auk which looked like "if a puffin was a threat" personally i think it mostly just looks like an auk that is big but i can concede that that maybe is just exactly the thing that would make a puffin threatening. anyway they talked about how it went extinct and i havent factchecked this because the story is too good and also it's doctor who so my facts dont need to be watertight for it to be a good episode.
so how this bird went extinct, after like regular human stuff that humans do like hunt it for its down to make pillows, there were three men on some island or something in britain and they caught a great auk and they kept it. just like. for fun or profit reasons unknown but they kept it for three days and then a storm came. and so these men did what anyone would do im sure and conclude this WASNT actually a bird it was a WITCH and it had BROUGHT THE STORM UPON THEM. so they beat it to death with sticks.
and thats how the last great auk died, "caught by men, murdered for witchcraft"
i think this would make a GREAT doctor who episode. we're going to save the last great auk

The Royal Diaries
Growing up, born in the early 90’s, my absolute favorite book were The Royal Diaries series from Scholastic. These books were a spinoff from the Dear America books (which I also read). They followed the middle age/teenage years of historically important royal women. To be honest, my obsession with monarchies and my interest in history (and my history degree) can be firmly traced from this series.…
