Tumblr media
Get ready to be inspired by the remarkable journey and invaluable insights of Nikki Sunga, the NEW STARS 2017 Crystal Winner and esteemed judge for the NEW STARS 2021. In this exclusive interview, we dive into Nikki's captivating story, from her triumphant victory in 2017 to her role in shaping the next generation of advertising talents.
Join us as we delve into Nikki's transformative journey, uncover the challenges she faced, and explore the valuable lessons she has learned along the way. Discover how she harnessed her creativity and tenacity to stand out in the NEW STARS and gain valuable insights into the evolving world of advertising from a seasoned professional.
1. Could you introduce yourself, please?
Tumblr media
: Hi, I’m Nikki Sunga, an art-based Creative Director at BBDO Guerrero.
2. Do you have any connections with MAD STARS?
Can you address your previous performances in MAD STARS?
Tumblr media
: In 2017, my partner Andi and I were the first creative team to represent the Philippines in MAD STARS New Stars Competition in Busan, Korea.
3. You were awarded from NEW STARS in 2017 and 4 years later, you became a NEW STARS Jury!
Can we talk about ‘What are the differences between NEW STARS participant’s perspective and NEW STARS Jury’s perspective’?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
: It’s amazing to even just think about how in a matter of four years, an art director competitor would be a jury member. In 2017, when I was just a NEW STARS participant, my mindset was about absorbing all that I could from the experience—from meeting many young minds all over the world to learning from our mentors. Winning then was just a bonus and the greater prize was being in Busan with all of MAD STARS.
In 2021 when I became a jury member, I was focused on mentoring and making sure I was able to give back to the participants all that I was able to absorb four years prior. As a jury member, I was able to give advice to some of the participants on how to ideate or even how to compete and still have fun in NEW STARS. Giving back my knowledge & experience were my goals in 2021 as a jury member.
4. You have experienced both on & offline NEW STARS competitions. Would you address the pros & cons for both online and offline NEW STARS competitions? Also, which of the two methods seems to lead to more creativity among the participants?
Tumblr media
: Honestly, nothing beats being on ground in Busan with your fellow competitors/participants. Offline NEW STARS in Korea has an exciting energy! When you’re competing or judging in BEXCO, you’ll be able to mingle and meet with many advertisers and creatives from different parts of the world. The offline experience allows you to freely talk to anyone and you’ll also gain more insights from them. It makes the entire competition experience more holistic and also fulfilling at the same time.
During the pandemic, when NEW STARS was held online, it reached a wider audience given that everyone relied on the internet. There were so many entries for the competition and that was its biggest value for me. Even it if it was only virtual, you could clearly see the thirst for competition for young creatives all over the world. The difficulty I experienced during the online competition was that of transparency or being able to easily communicate with the participants.
5. I remember the last interview with you in 2021 talking about your achievements. You have mentioned that from a young creator and now a mentor in the creative team, making opportunities to train the next generation was your great achievement. Do you have any new proud achievements recently?
: Mentoring young creatives has and always will be something I constantly work hard for and I actively do this by involving myself in intern programs, jurying for young competitions, and also joining creative workshops.

But when it comes to the work that we’ve created, I’m extremely proud of our environmental design initiatives for our agency and clients at BBDO Guerrero.
Recently, we’ve earned PR recognition and won a few metals for “Mountain Dew’s Re-Dew Scrapboards”. This design initiative focuses on using Mountain Dew soda bottles as PET-resin by combining it with Typhoon Rai wreckage to create unique surfboards. We aim to raise funds for the typhoon-hit island of Siargao where surfing and tourism are important. My team and I are completely hands-on from creating the actual surfboards to hosting its exhibits. You may find out more about Re-Dew Scrapboards here: www.redew.ph
6. What new challenge or interest do you have these days?
: Recently, my days have been filled with learning and coping with AI. As an art director, AI has become a fun tool to experiment with. It provides a good baseline for ideas and execution. I believe in learning WITH AI rather than being afraid of it.
7. Where can you usually get inspiration to come up with creative ideas?
: Inspiration for creative ideation comes from daily life experiences and observations. When I brainstorm, I like to sit in a café by myself and watch people around me.
I like to think and do “Tiktok Searches” when I ideate. It’s also important to be updated with the latest trends for our current markets so spending time on multiple social networking sites 2-3 hours a day is necessary for me.
8. What Are Your Career Goals?
: As a 32-year-old Creative Director, my current goal is to STAY YOUNG and to keep my fire for competition burning. These two goals have propelled my career to where it is today and these encourage me to be a better creative.
9. Would you like to give any advice or tips for NEW STARS participants?
Tumblr media
: HAVE FUN. Winning the competition is important but being a NEW STARS participant who is present in Busan is a great opportunity for young creatives like you. Allow yourself to be a SPONGE- absorb insights, meet people, create connections, and make life-long friends in advertising! NEW STARS has paved so many doors in my life and I hope it does the same for you.

The Heliodorus Pillar
Tumblr media
“The Heliodorus pillar is a stone column that was erected around 113 BCE in central India[1] in Besnagar (near Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh). The pillar was called the Garuda-standard by Heliodorus, referring to the deity Garuda. The pillar is commonly named after Heliodorus, who was an ambassador of the Indo-Greek king Antialcidas from Taxila, and was sent to the Indian ruler Bhagabhadra.[2] A dedication written in Brahmi script was inscribed on the pillar, venerating Vāsudeva, the Deva deva the "God of Gods" and the Supreme Deity.[3][4][5][6] The pillar also glorifies the Indian ruler as "Bhagabhadra the savior". The pillar is a stambha which symbolizes joining earth, space and heaven, and is thought to connote the "cosmic axis" and express the cosmic totality of the Deity.[3]
The Heliodorus pillar site is located near the confluence of two rivers, about 60 kilometres (37 mi) northeast from Bhopal, 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) from the Buddhist stupa of Sanchi, and 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from the Hindu Udayagiri site.[7]
The pillar was discovered by Alexander Cunningham in 1877. Two major archaeological excavations in the 20th-century have revealed the pillar to be a part of an ancient Vāsudeva temple site.[4][8][9] Aside from religious scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita, the epigraphical inscriptions on the Heliodorus pillar and the Hathibada Ghosundi Inscriptions contain some of the earliest known writings of Vāsudeva-Krishna devotion and early Vaishnavism and are considered the first archeological evidence of its existence.[10][11][12][13][14][6] The pillar is also one of the earliest surviving records of a foreign convert into Vaishnavism.[15][6] Alternatively, making dedications to foreign gods was only a logical practice for the Greeks, intended to appropriate their local power. This cannot be regarded as a "conversion" to Hinduism.[16]”
Tumblr media
Main inscription of the Heliodorus pillar, circa 110 BCE
“There are two inscriptions on the pillar. The inscriptions have been analysed by several authors, such as E. J. Rapson,[44] Sukthankar,[27]Richard Salomon,[5] and Shane Wallace.[4]
The text of the inscriptions is in the Brahmi script of the Sunga period, the language is Central-western epigraphic Prakrit, with a few Sanskritized spellings.[5] The first inscription describes the private religious dedication of Heliodorus (Translations: Richard Salomon):[5]
Line 1. This Garuda-standard of Vāsudeva, the god of gods Line 2. was constructed here by Heliodora (Heliodoros), the Bhagavata, Line 3. son of Dion, a man of Takhkhasila (Taxila), Line 4. the Greek ambassador who came from the Great King Line 5. Amtalikita (Antialkidas) to King Line 6. Kasiputra Bhagabhadra, the Savior, Line 7. prospering in (his) fourteenth regnal year.[45]
The second inscription on the pillar, in the same script, recites a verse from the Hindu epic Mahabharata:[22][26]
Line 1. (These?) three steps to immortality, when correctly followed, Line 2. lead to heaven: control, generosity, and attention.[45]”

This monument is of great importance for many reasons. I see that there is a debate about the conversion or not of Heliodorus to early Vaishnavism. It seems that most Greeks established in India after Alexander converted to or at least have been heavily influenced by Buddhism, but nothing excludes that some among them adopted other forms of Indian religiosity. I remind only that (according to most scholars) the great Indian epic Mahabharata was still in a process of formation in Heliodorus’ time, but also that the use of the term “hinduism” is perhaps rather anachronistic for the same period.

Some of the Famous Tourist Destinations to Explore Near Sanchi Stupas in Madhya Pradesh
Tumblr media
If you are an explorer who travels in search of peace and exploring Buddhism, you must have heard the name of the great Stupa of Sanchi. It’s one enchanted site that takes you to a magical journey to experience the life of Buddha and his disciples. The rich history of these spherical structures dating back to the Mauryan period never fails to amaze the history lover and ardent spiritual travellers. Besides these phenomenal wonders, there are more places to explore within a radius of 10 to 12 km. Here are the top tourist attractions that you would want to see on your excursion to Sanchi.
Jambudweep
Situated in the same town as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sanchi Stupas, Buddha Jambudweep is a 17-acre theme park. It is built on the life and preaching of Gautam Buddha and Emperor Ashoka. The site is aligned with lush green gardens with various recreational activities like story boards, mazes, and jigsaw puzzles to give you wisdom on Buddhism. There is a museum that has digital puzzle games and different paintings that throws light on how stupas were erected from start. You can also attend the spellbinding sound & light show that will traverse you to the glorious journey of Gautam Buddha in Sanchi.
ASI Museum
Established by Sir John Marshall, Archaeological Museum in Sanchi exhibits various ancient objects belonging to Mauryan, Sunga, Satvahana, Kushana, Gupta and late Gupta periods in the main hall, galleries and a few in open courtyards. It is a treasure trove of history that will transport back to old times and awe-struck you with the thought that how finely these things were made with so limited resources.
Vidisha’s heliodorus Pillar
Vidisha is a district located approx. 10 km from Sanchi and 4 km from Udaigiri site. After exploring the spellbinding stupas and temples if you still have spare time, then visit city’s Heliodorus Pillar. It’s a stone column built in 113 BCE. A dedication written in Brahmi script was inscribed on the pillar, revering Vasudeva, the “God of Gods” and the Supreme Deity. The stambha symbolises joining earth, space and heaven. It’s a small site and would hardly take 15 minutes to explore.
Udaigiri Caves
Just 10 km away from Sanchi stupas, there are ancient Udaigiri caves and shall not take more than half an hour to discover. The area is surrounded by forest and offers really beautiful and worthy views of greenery! Caves that rings 20 Gupta-era temples and monasteries were carved out of a rocky hill, one of which is dedicated to Jainism and the rest to Hindu Gods & Goddesses. The trip will be a mix of historical and nature sightings and the best time to visit is during the monsoon.
So, when you plan a trip to Sanchi stupas, weave your travel around these beautiful sites and call it a day with sound and light show at Stupas or Jambudweep followed by delicious dinner at MPT Gateway Retreat, Sanchi, or Udaigiri Resort.

Solas: The Hierophant tarot card statue
Tumblr media
[now in the BioWare Gear Store]
A MAGE FOR THE AGES
A trusted companion, a heretic, a lover, whatever you consider Solas, his great power and immense wisdom cannot be ignored. An elven apostate and hedge mage (though he would refuse such arbitrary titles), he has a passion for all things related to the Fade that keeps him apart from other elves on his wanderings.
His yearning for knowledge and deep connection to the Fade have taken him to ancient ruins far beyond where most people in Thedas have ever ventured.
Solas’s depiction as the tarot’s Hierophant speaks to his advisory relationship, with the Inquisitor, and as such, he offers signs of good days ahead— a thriving association and, for the female elven Inquisitor an abundance of love.
Made using polyresin, this statue is a representation of the Hierophant romance tarot card from Dragon Age: Inquisition. It is intricately detailed with accurate features, colors, and outfit, as well as his signature staff, and the calm expression that you’d expect from Solas. We have added the wonderful lithograph tarot card designed by Ramil Sunga, Concept Director/Concept Lead at BioWare. Together, this statue and card duo promise to take you through the vivid world of Thedas and the mysterious realm of the Fade, as Solas sets out on yet another one of his dreamy journeys.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐌𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫: 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐱 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐨
Tumblr media
Introduction Felix Ysagun Manalo, commonly known as Ka Felix, was the founder and first Executive Minister of Iglesia ni Cristo (born Félix Manalo y Ysagun; May 10, 1886 – April 12, 1963). Manalo is regarded as a prophet and God's final messenger by his followers.
He is the father of Eraño G. Manalo, who succeeded him as Executive Minister of the INC, and the grandfather of Eduardo V. Manalo, the current Executive Minister of Iglesia ni Cristo.
Childhood He was forced to attend public school in Santa Ana, Taguig, when he was seven years old, in 1893. Maestro Cario was the name of his old teacher, Macario Ocampo. In a caton class, he learned basic literacy and the fundamentals of the Catholic faith (cathecism class). In Laguna de Bay, he worked as a fisherman alongside his father. With his cousin, Modesto Ysagun, he worked as a carabao (water buffalo) herd boy. They were able to catch field mice whose meat was nutritious. In a competition to see who could stay the longest barefooted on an anthill crawling with maddened red ants, he beat out many other guys. In 1896, during the Philippine Revolution against Spain, his father died, leaving him and his younger sister, Praxedes in the care of their mother.
Tumblr media
As a Roman Catholic Felix and his cousin were adopted in an urban parish house in Sampaloc, Manila, by their uncle Mariano Borja, a Catholic priest, in 1899. The priest, a fan of fighting cocks, not only fed and housed them, but also told them stories about great men, which undoubtedly spurred the two little lads to weave dreams. Among other things, they assisted in the lighting of the candles. Felix discovered a Bible left on a church bench in that parish, which he began to read. He was harshly chastised for studying the Bible alone.
Founding the Iglesia Ni Cristo He sequestered himself in his friends' house, Eusebio Sunga, in Pasay, in November 1913, with religious literature and unused notebooks, telling everyone in the house not to disturb him. He went two days and three nights without eating or drinking. He emerged from his solitary confinement with his newfound beliefs.
During World War II Germany launched an unexpected invasion on Poland on September 1, 1939, in violation of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, which marked the start of World War II. The Japanese Imperial Army conducted a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941, followed by an attack on the Philippine Islands the next day. During the Japanese rule of the Philippines, he continued to host worship services, missionary operations, and respond to the spiritual needs of its members. Soldiers from the Imperial Japanese Army disrupted a service in Tayuman, Santa Cruz, Manila, but were unable to prevent him from officiating. He eventually became an information officer for the resistance organization, providing them with money, food, and clothing.
Tumblr media
Prudencio Vasquez presided over INC at the Japanese headquarters on June 29, 1942. Previously, "Evangelical Mission" was referred to as "Evangelical Rally. "Females sat on the left side of the church during worship sessions in the early years, while males sat on the right side.During the Japanese occupation, the Japanese kidnapped FYM and demanded that he reign over all religions in the country or be the sole pastor of the many churches in order to control religions in the Philippines, but he refused. The ministers are killed or massacred while they are in their “klase” or meeting classes, the ministers who hold the bible was chased by the japanese and suspected that they were enemies, they were forced to dig and in that place they are killed.
After World War II On 15 August 1945, the Japanese Imperial Army withdrew its forces from Asia that marked the end of Second World War. He dispatched evangelistic workers to the Bicol region in 1947. At the age of 22, Eraño G. Manalo was ordained as a minister on May 10, 1947. In 1948, the church began construction on its central office and the Executive Minister's official residence on Riverside Street in San Juan, Rizal. Architect Juan Nakpil created the magnificent complex. Meanwhile, the Huks attempted but failed to assassinate Manalo once more. The first concrete church was constructed in Washington, Sampaloc, Manila, in 1948. January 1953 he summoned all division ministers and senior officials of the church after their regular ministerial meeting to a special conference. He announced that when his time comes, there must be someone to take his place. At 2 p.m, the meeting proceeded with himself presiding. The voting was held: Eraño G. Manalo, Isaias Samson and Isaias Reyes were nominated. Samson obtained two votes, while Eraño obtained all of the remaining votes and was proclaimed as the future Executive Minister. The body then elected Eraño’s would-be assistants: Teofilo C. Ramos and Cipriano Sandoval.By 1954, membership grew to 200,000.
Death of Felix Y. Manalo On February 1963, Felix fell very ill. He was rushed to St. Luke’s Veteran Memorial Hospital in Quezon City where doctors decided to immediately remove an intestinal obstruction. He rejected the surgery. On 21st March 1963, he became completely incapacitated and was transferred to Veterans Memorial Hospital. Doctors operated on him but failed to give him relief from pain.On 2nd April 1963, he was confined to treat his intestines which had burst and hemorrhaged. He had stomach ulcers which brought him constant pain that even medication did not help. On 11th April, doctors performed the third and last surgery on him.On 12th April 1963 at 2:35 a.m, at the age of 76, Felix Ysagun Manalo breathe his last. Many members mourned his death at the San Juan Chapel. The body was transferred to the new cathedral-chapel in San Francisco del Monte, Quezon City. On 23rd April 1963, according to his will, his body was interred in the pagoda housing his office and private study below the Executive Minister’s residence in San Juan, Rizal.Within the span of 49 years of his administration, the church had built1,250 local chapels and 35 large concrete cathedrals. The leadership of the church was passed on to his son, Eraño de Guzman Manalo.
Tumblr media
To see what we have now in the Church of Christ with over a hundred nations throughout the world.
It's pretty amazing that it all developed from one man who was chosen by God to reestablish the Church in these last days.

Wood and Worry

12/9/2020 Dincember prompt: "Let It Snow”
SFW, however there are descriptions of murder and violence after the fact.
My Dincember prompts are part of a serial story I’m telling. This is the fifth part of the story. This post won’t make sense without reading the others.
Part 1: Snowballs and Saviors Part 2: Dreams and Dangers (nsfw) Part 3: Heat and Harassment Part 4:  Fire and Fatality (depictions of violence and death)
The snow started just after sunrise, fat, heavy flakes that would have doomed the search mission if it hadn’t been for Mando. The weird thing on his back that Corrie had wondered about from time to time was a jetpack that allowed him to get an aerial view and cover more ground. She was starting to understand why the Mandalorians had such a fierce reputation.
“They’re in the cave nearby,” Mando said as soon as the roar of his jet pack faded.
“Good, an ambush shouldn’t be too hard, then,” Corrie said grimly. “How many?”
“Eight.” Mando’s grim announcement caused the posse members to shift nervously. That was two more than the posse, but all Corrie could think was that if they got this group, that was over half of them dead or caught.
“Are we sure this is the group that torched the jail?” Kado asked.
“I am,” Mando replied. “I’m not sure it was all of them, but the two that I followed from the town are here.”
“Unless they surrender, kill them all,” Corrie said, drawing her blaster.
“What happens if the two who torched the jail surrender?” Mando asked.
“Then they go back to town to stand trial,” Corrie said grimly. “I hope they do.” Mando tilted his helmet in a silent question. “It’d do the townsfolk good to see them dance on a rope.”
“Then give the word, Sheriff, and we’ll get ‘em,” Mando said.
“Word,” Corrie said, and the posse rolled out.
~  *  ~  * ~
The bodies were dragged off and left for the beasts, which was no better than those animals deserved anyway. They only had one injury, thanks to Mando’s willingness to test the integrity of his armor by being the heart of the battle.
“You okay, Osker?” Corrie asked, kneeling down next to the kid. He was technically an adult, but didn’t look it, especially when his face was almost white with pain and he was biting back tears.
“I’ll be fine, Sheriff.” He put on a brave face but everyone knew the knife wound in his shoulder hurt. Corrie patted his hand and started to get up, but he caught her hand. “Sheriff, if… if my arm’s gonna be okay, can I be a deputy?”
Corrie smiled, even as part of her hated the sudden reminder that she’d lost one last night. The mother in her objected to the idea of sending this baby into fights. Osker wasn’t a baby though; he was a grown man, even if he was barely so. Even if she could remember when he was born. “I’d be proud to have you, once you’re better. You take care.”
He swelled with pride. “Yes, Sheriff.” Then he let the other men get him up on his gurt for the long, painful ride back to town.
Koda turned to her. “You sure you’ll be okay out here, Corrie?”
“I’ve got Mando,” she said, “I think we’ll be alright.” She hadn’t meant it quite the way it came out, and Koda raised an eyebrow. “Anyone who comes back to this camp tonight is in for a nasty surprise,” she quickly added, ignoring the blush trying to stain her cheeks.
She stood in the snow, watching four of the six people she’d ridden out with go home. Glancing over at Mando with his floating kid, she said, “So, how about you get some wood and I’ll find some tinder?”
Literally eating her foot wasn’t an option so she met the black T of his visor and didn’t show her discomfort. It’s what Dad would have done, though she didn’t think her father was capable of unintentional sexual innuendos like she was managing. “Yeah,” he said after a moment. “I got it.”
The second he’d turned away, Corrie allowed herself a full-body cringe over the matter. When she was done, she went through the prisoner’s meager belongings. They’d clearly been stealing from the locals; Corrie recognized all the tools and clothing as being Zalzus-made. She identified one of the scarves; it had been Sunga’s favorite, and Corrie’s clenched her teeth as she carefully set it aside to take back with them.
She picked some yarn from frayed woolen gloves for tinder, and dug the wet pieces of wood out of the firepit. During the fight, someone had kicked snow onto the fire, and now it was up to her to salvage it. Getting out flint and tinder, she started the fight to get it lit again.
“Here, let me,” Mando offered as he dropped an armful of wood next to the pit. Corrie was more than happy to let someone else do this crappy job. She handed him the flint box, only to have him extend his arm and send a gout of flame that effortlessly lit the tinder.
She stared at him. He looked down at the flint box, then back at her. “Cheater,” she told him.
“It isn’t cheating if you win the fight,” he told her.
“All’s fair in love and war?” she shot back, then wanted to swallow her foot again.
“In war. Wouldn’t know much about in love,” he said levelly.
“So you don’t love your son?” she asked sharply.
His helmet pulled back in surprise. “That’s not what you were asking about.”
“That’s not what you thought I was asking about.” She shrugged. “Love’s love. There’s different kinds, and it comes out in different ways, but it’s rarely fair either way.”
“So kids aren’t fair in love?” he asked, his voice curious.
Corrie laughed. “Mando, kids are the worst about love. They’ll take it all, but they have to be almost adults before they truly understand how to give it.” He glanced at the child, and she said, “That’s a deep look.”
“You can’t see my face,” he protested.
“I don’t need to,” she said. “Something I said hit a nerve or provoked somethin’.”
He turned from her and she shrugged. They were silent as they got the gurts hidden in the back of the cave with water and food. Then he went and got them more water while she opened jarred stew and started heating it.
“The kid’s fifty.” His remark, delivered as he casually sent down the water jug, made her take another look at the child. Mando added, “I just thought, if you’re right, then I’ll never know him when he’s capable of giving love.”
Behind him, snow started to fall in a white curtain that blocked the remaining light of the day. “That a problem?” Corrie asked, leaning forward to stir the stew.
“Does it matter if it is?” he asked.
“You don’t like to answer questions, do you?” she asked.
“Not invasive ones.”
“Then tell me to shut up,” Corrie told him, peering up at him. “So have you figured out how you’re eating yet?”
His shoulders drooped a bit. “No.”
“Great. I’ll just wait outside for a bit.” Corrie half-expected a protest, something about how she shouldn’t get soaked just for him, and no, no, he’d go stand in the snow to eat.
“Thank you, Sheriff.” His simple acceptance was a pleasant surprise, and Corrie found her opinion of his shifting yet again. He couldn’t seem to go a moment without changing her views on him.
He took one of the seats left by the prisoners as the food finished warming. They sat in silence, then Corrie ate while Mando fed the baby.
When she was done, she said, “Hollar when you’re done.” He nodded as he placed the child in the bassinet and reached for the closure. “Naw, give me the control and let him follow me. Get some fresh air.”
He hesitated. “We’re in an open cave. He’s got fresh air.
“We won’t be far away,” she said. “Literally just out of line of sight. It’s better than him being locked up in the bassinet, right?”
Mando looked at the baby, who looked at him. Rising, he checked to make sure his hat and gloves were on correctly, then tucked the blanket around him more tightly and handed her the controls. Aware of the trust he was silently showing in her, she walked just out of sight of the entrance and no further, pulling the bassinet toward her so she could gently rock it. The kid looked alarmed for a moment, then smiled and settled back to watch the snow fall.
Her comm crackled and then Koda said, “Boss, you read me?”
“Yeah, Koda, I read ya,” she said, wondering what was happening now.
“Boss, some of the teens made their own posse and headed up into the eastern hills before the snow started,” Koda told her. “I followed as far as I could, but the snow’s gettin’ bad.”
“Dank ferrik,” she growled. “Who was it?”
“Scerr Hamne, Lindi Jissard, and Kuna Tane. They took Kern’s speederbikes.”
Corrie tucked her hair behind her ears, since she couldn’t rake her fingers through it like she normally did when agitated. Silently cursing idiot kids, she said, “Lemme guess, they took the high performance ones.”
“Got it in one. Kern says the bikes should have frozen up already.”
“Damn kids. Has Kern gone after them?”
“No, but Lindi’s not going to be able to sit for a month when we find her, and is probably grounded until she’s dead,” Kota answered. “Can’t say I blame her father. Kern loves his speederbikes.”
“We have to find them before he can ruin her life,” Corrie replied. “I think Mando and I are stuck up here until morning, at minimum. We’ll join the hunt tomorrow.”
“That’s what I figured, boss. See ya tomorrow. Stay warm.”
But not too warm, Corrie thought with a flush. “See ya tomorrow. Have the search party ready.”
When Mando called her in, he took one look at her face and guessed, “Trouble?”
“Been nothin’ but since that kriffin’ ship crashed,” she said wearily. “Libu used to be quiet and safe, and now…” She pulled off her hat and ran her fingers through her thick curls. Sometimes, she forgot she’d cut it back when she’d taken the job, and got a little surprise when she ran out of hair before she thought she would. Tonight was one of those nights when she came up short, and wondered if she really had the right to be out here, doing this job.
“Hutts happen.”
Corrie looked at the bounty hunter. “Is that a joke?”
He paused and then said, “Was it funny?”
“I… I don’t know,” she said, reaching out to the bassinet and rocking the kid again. He cooed softly. “A little, I guess.”
“I’m not good at jokes.” He said it simply, and she wished she could see his face, to read what emotions were crossing it.
“No,” Corrie said with faux shock, opting to try a little humor herself. “Really? It’s been a laugh a minute since I met you.”
The second it was out of her mouth, she realized he might feel mocked, but before she could withdraw her statement, he said, “That’s me, Funny Man Mando.”
She chuckled. “Funny Man Mando, savior of Libu. I think that’s what we’ll put on the statue we erect to you.”
He visibly winced. “You’re local law enforcement, you’re supposed to take all the credit after I leave town. Besides, you’d make a prettier statue than me.”
Which left her so flustered that she couldn’t come up with a retort, and it had distracted her from the problem with the teens. As a bonus, it meant they spent the rest of the night in near-blessed silence. Better than eating her foot every few minutes.

Does this... Does this make you think of anything?

Since my friend @zombolouge is coming to Edmonton Expo this year, and my sister @deliriumsedge is planning to go to it again herself, I guess I’m going to Edmonton Expo for two years in a row. (I usually go every other year.) And since making a Fen’Harel cosplay was such a great way to express myself creatively and pick up some new skills last year, I decided to make another Solas cosplay.  In for a penny, in for a pound: I guess I am a cosplayer now.
I am super proud of my Fen’Harel cosplay, but it is not the most comfortable thing to wear at a con where there were so many people (~80,000 over three days last year) that the AC in the building couldn’t keep up. It quickly became quite a sweltering and heavy costume to wear on the longest day of the convention (Saturday) which is when I wore it because Saturday was the cosplay contest day, and I had entered the competition. So, note to future self: wear Fen’Harel on Friday night or Sunday, when you won’t have to wear it as long. ;)
Anyway, this year’s project won’t be quite so technical as last year’s because it will mostly be sewing. I plan to make the outfit that he’s wearing on the Solas romance tarot card. This beautiful artwork was created by BioWare concept artist Ramil Sunga.

New skills that I’ll have to learn for this one include reverse appliqué (for the Dread Wolfish torque around his neck) and crewel embroidery (I thought I might embroider some leaves on to the gold surcoat to jazz it up a little.)
I daresay this cosplay will be much more comfortable to wear for twelve hours in a row.

Biography of Felix Manalo
This is a biography of Felix Ysagun y Manalo or mostly known as Felix Manalo. He was born in Barrio Tipas, Taguig, Rizal province in Luzon, Philippines on May 10, 1886. His name Felix means “happy” was chosen from the roster saints from that month. His father, Mariano Ysagun is a fisherman and her mother Bonifacia Manalo was a housewife and a known “manang”, a devotee of the patron saint, San Antonio.
When he was seven, he was made to attend a public school in Santa Ana, Taguig. Another time, he won a whiplash battle that lasted hours and left him sick for a week. His father died in 1896 during the Philippine Revolution against Spain, leaving him and his younger sister, Praxedes, to be raised by their mother. His father's identity as a Katipuneros of Taguig, the Katipunan's secret gathering location, is unclear. At this time, his primary education was disturbed.
General Emilio Aguinaldo declares the Philippines freedom from Spanish colonial authority in 1898. Felix, 12, and his cousin Modesto, 12, drifted away for Manila soon after this. He learned photography from his cousin, Serapio Ysagun, and afterwards became an apprentice at his uncle, Manuel Manalo's, photographic studio. Other skills he learnt included goldsmithing, barbering, and weaving buri caps. His mother married Clemente Mozo, a widower, in 1899. Only two of his five children, Fausta and Baldomero, survived. Baldomero was born two months after Mozo died. Bonifacia was forced to work in a small sawali (woven bamboo strips) factory as a result of this.
Felix and his cousin were adopted in an urban parish house in Sampaloc, Manila, by their uncle Mariano Borja, a Catholic priest, in 1899.
He went to the parish seminary because he was a parishioner. He was therefore able to compare the Catholic church's teachings and actions to the Bible's teachings. He realized that fundamental Catholic concepts such as baptism by infusion, worship of graven images, and protracted prayers are incompatible with the Bible. Doubts began to arise in his mind, and he began to reject traditional Catholic rituals.
In April 1903, Felix was drawn to the Colorum spiritist organization, which claimed that the end of the world was approaching, and whose initiation ceremonies led him on a lenten pilgrimage to the San Cristobal and Banahaw mountains near Dolores, Tayabas (now Quezon province). Mystics were able to communicate with the Supreme Being in a direct and reciprocal manner.
In the dark bowels of the mountain caverns, you may ask God a question and hear His audible response. He realized the "Voice of the Almighty" was coming from a regular person — a Colorum leader. He returned home after becoming disillusioned. With his buddy Eusebio Sunga, he founded a sombreria, or hat business, in Paraaque, Rizal.
He and Modesto watched a public argument about the usage of graven images between a Catholic priest and an American Methodist pastor, in which the latter clearly won and piqued his curiosity. He eventually abandoned his hat shop in order to devote more attention to his religious studies. He went to the Methodist Episcopal Church's headquarters on Rizal Avenue in Manila, where he was introduced to an American missionary by a pastor. He began attending its worship sessions and later became a pastor after enrolling in the Florence B. Nicholson Seminary in Caloocan, Rizal, in 1918.
While on a missionary assignment in the summer of 1905, he learned that his mother was gravely ill and returned home to Tipas to see her, but it was too late. He turned down the final sacrament for her. She had to be buried at an Aglipayan cemetery when the Catholic priest refused to let her be buried in the Tipas Catholic cemetery. He stayed with his brother Baldomero and sisters Praxedes and Fausta in Tipas for a while. He then took his mother's surname Manalo (which means "victory" in Tagalog) out of love and respect for her, as well as a desire to have a common surname with his stepbrothers Baldomero and Fausta.
In 1907 he joined the Presbyterian Church and later became a minister after attending the Erinwood Bible School. He lived in the homes of Esteban Aquino and Rita Bani, a Presbyterian couple who lived on the corners of Malate's Carolina and Cortavirte streets in Manila. He approached them, and the childless couple treated him as his son. In 1910 he joined the alliance of Christianity and missionaries known in the United States as a disciple of Christ, where he studied at the University of Manila in the Bible. What caught his attention was the nature of immersion baptism and the idea of restoring a first-century church. He married Tomasa Sereneo from Paco, Manila. Her son Gerald died in early childhood. His wife is said to have accused him of cruel and adultery. (Nevertheless, on December 25, 1918, Christian missionary ministers praised him as an outstanding evangelist.
In 1908, the Seventh Day Adventist commenced its first missionary paintings withinside the Philippine islands with the advent of L.V. Finster, an elder and a pastor. It changed into best on three March 1911 that it carried out its first baptism which changed into held with the aid of using the Pasig River, close to Punta Santa Ana, Manila, officiated with the aid of using I.H. Evans, then president of the Asiatic Division. In the equal year, Felix attended a assembly to discuss Finster on his stance that Christians are below the Mosaic Law. Felix changed into very competitive in his questioning. He had a protracted listing of questions, however after Finster had effectively responded them one with the aid of using one, Manalo manfully said, “You know, that guy is right!” Manalo persisted his research with Finster for 7 months. After this indoctrination, he joined the church.
One day in November, 1913, Felix Manalo gathered all the religious literature he had accumulated and arranged them, with a pile of unused notebooks, sharpened pencils and the Bible, on a table inside a dimly-lit room in Eusebio Sungas house in Pasay. He instructed everyone in the household that he should not be disturbed, then kept himself in seclusion. So intense was his concentration that he became oblivious of time, food and the world outside. He emerged from that seclusion after three days and three nights of intensive study and reflection, his notebooks filled with notes, certain that God had commissioned him to perform a mission.
One day in July1914, Felix Manalo and wife, Honorata, left Pasay with out a centavo among them and proceeded to Sta. Anna, Manila. He intentionally did now no longer convey any money, stated his wife, for he desired God to carry out a miracle of their life. Before achieving their destination- Punta St. Ana-the needed to go the Pasig River with the aid of using boat. A boatman ferried them throughout with out the two-centavo fare-Manalo promised to pay him later. In Punta, he requested for his pals Apolinario Ramos and wife, Engracia. They have been staying withinside the people quarters of the development firm, Atlantic Gulf & Pacific Company. Manalo then despatched a person to pay the boat fare. That night, with the permission of the Ramos couple, he carried out his first spiritual assembly of their room with best a handful of humans listening. As he persisted to keep nightly conferences greater got here to listen, Drawn now no longer best with the aid of using the newness of his biblical teachings however with the aid of using their eagerness to peer the younger evangelist who even then changed into famend as a brilliant, spell-binding speaker. Indeed, Felix Manalo, then best 27 taking place 28, had a commanding persona and outstanding eloquence. Every declaration he made changed into from the Bible. Not lengthy after that first assembly the primary 14 converts to the Iglesia ni Cristo have been baptized, with the aid of using immersion, with the aid of using Felix Manalo on the Sta. Ana part of the Pasig River. To make sure privacy, the baptismal vicinity changed into enclosed with white material held up with the aid of using bamboo poles. Manalo waited withinside the baptistery for the converts. Before him, in waist deep water, he advised every of them to elevate their hands, country their allegiance to God, Christ and the Bible, and reaffirm their loyalty to their new faith. Then he immersed them one at a time withinside the clean river water "withinside the call of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit".
This first batch of converts, according to Church records, was composed of:
1. Barbara Cordero
2. Juan de la Cruz
3. Juana de la Cruz
4. Maximano Diosenito
5. Remigia Guevarra
6. Pedro Inocencio
7. Federico Inocencio
8. Tomas Inocencio
9. Emilia de Leon
10. Felicimo de Leon
11. Estanislao Mangilit
12. Engracia Ramos
13. Gorgonio Sta. Maria
14. Eugenia Yuzon
To keep away from accusations of preaching an unrecognized church, Felix Manalo determined to sign in the Iglesia ni Cristo with the Philippine government. He requested a attorney friend, Juan Natividad, to help him. On July 27, 1914, the Iglesia ni Cristo become formally registered, the date of its registration coinciding with the outbreak of World War I. Eventually, different Division had been unexpectedly established; then Pangasinan (1934) beneathneath Placido Pascua. Other provinces in Southern Luzon followed; Batangas (1936) with Eugenio Cortes as first Division Minister; Tayabas (now Quezon), have become a department in 1913 beneathneath Glicerio Santos Sr. Manalo then fielded a few evangelical people in Northern Luzon, specially La Union, aleven though that province have become a district handiest in 1943, with Felimon Sanidad as first Division Minister.

They first settled in Cotabato like pilgrims and at once Began evangelization. The marketing campaign become effective however Cotabato did now no longer turn out to be a Division then due to the fact World War II intervened. In 1946, however, the paintings resumed, and Manalo made Cotabato a Division beneathneath Mariano Suarez.
Felix Manalo created his second trip to the u. s. in August 1938 at the instance of the Christian Alliance Society. He welcome the chance to deliver speeches abroad at their invite for it might additionally change him to endure treatment of a abdomen ailment.
He was able to go with some speaking engagements however unable to undergo treatment for once he fell unwell he educated his secretary, Cirilo Gonzales, to bring him back directly to the Philippines. incoming in Manila once four months within the United States, the 52-year-old leader was welcomed at Pier seven by thousands of Church members. He was happy however his health troubled him.
However it had been solely in 1953, at 67, that he met the concept of succession head-on. On Jan 23, that year, he summoned all division ministers and senior officers of the Church once their regular ministerial meeting to a special conference.
He declared that when his time came, there should be somebody to require his place. The sudden announcement surprised the ministers as a result of Manalo was then quite young and appeared terribly healthy. At 2oclock that afternoon, the meeting proceeded with Felix Manalo presiding. Under his management he had cast a sturdy bond of brotherhood a number of the Church contributors and stored them united and in harmony.
It changed into in this sturdy, enduring basis that his successor, Eraño G. Manalo, has needed to build. When the torch changed into exceeded to the then 38-year-antique Eraño in 1963, he pledged, "I intend to hold on my fathers mission, keep in line with his method, and encourage field and piety amongst my brothers and sisters withinside the Church.
I recognise I actually have their guide and vote of confidence." Those who believed the Church of Christ could become worse after the dying of Felix Manalo had been grossly disappointed.
For, at the contrary, the tempo of its increase has accelerated. The new steward has proved to be modern, similarly powerful chief and administrator. Under his management the Church has spanned and transcended the oceans and stamped the indelible imprint of Christianity amongst different Asian peoples, Americans, Europeans, Africans or even amongst Muslims withinside the Middle East. Eraño G. Manalo is brief to factor out, however, that the achievement of the Church have to now no longer be attributed to him. In his very own words: "All the energy and the consideration which the church is playing end result from the truth that once I assumed the position, the Church already had a organization and stable basis laid through the overdue Executive Minister. The Church is now playing the culmination of his vision, his sufferings and sacrifices, his love and fortitude. Above all, the whole thing is going on in line with the desire of God."

Even after such brutal violence against Muslims, many still perceive Hinduism as a religion of peace and harmony. And no, it's not Modi who has inspired this violent behavior in Hindus. He's only fanning it. Historically hindus have never been peaceful. And if you thought the violence was only targeted towards Muslims, you should someday read about Hindu violence against Buddhists. King Jalaluka for instance destroyed the Buddhist viharas within his jurisdiction on the ground that the chanting of the hymns by the Buddhist devotees disturbed his sleep. Hindu ruler, Pushyamitra Sunga, demolished 84,000 Buddhist stupas which had been built by Ashoka the Great, followed by the smashing of the Buddhist centres in Magadha. Thousands of Buddhist monks were mercilessly killed. In Kashmir, King Kinnara demolished thousands of Viharas and captured the Buddhists villages to please the Brahmins.
A large number of Buddhist viharas were usurped by the Brahmins and converted into Hindu temples where the Untouchables were given no entrance. The Buddhist places were projected as the Hindu temples by writing Puranas which were concocted myths or pseudo-history.
In Kerala, Sankaracharya and his close associate Kumarila Bhatta, an avowed enemy of Buddhism, organized a religious crusade against the Buddhists. We get a vivid description of the pleasure of Sankaracharya on seeing the people of non-Brahmanic faith being burnt to death from the book Sankara Digvijaya.
Brahmins by way of concocted stories in Puranas and mythologies have created an illusion of goodwill around their religion which is anything but oppressive. And I use oppressive carefully here. A religion which has caste system at its core cannot be anything otherwise.

would you recommend that class on photo realism? and are there other classes you think have really helped you?
I havent finished it so I can’t give a solid review but its been pretty nice. I do my learning alone from static observation/studies so its good to see other people’s workflow to make sure I’m not doing anything unnecessary lol.
That being said uhhh I don’t have a lot of lessons downloaded. I have some gumroad stuff from @marconelor which are worth checking out. I had a great character art & 2D game art course in college. But most of what I know now has come from dismantling more skilled artists’ work with my face against the screen and reasoning out their techniques by eye. Work from stylistic realism painters like Mike Azevedo, Myein/Catbib, Evan Amundsen, Ryota Murayama, Ramil Sunga, etc etc my ref folder is ridiculous lol. I’ve found that I absorb information better this way?? The problem-solving aspect of it all keeps me engaged. Everyones different though! I hope you find what works best for you.
