No but I gotta talk about Medusa for a minute actually.

It's been. A very long time since I read the PJO books so I don't exactly remember how Uncle Rick presents Medusa in the book. But the way the show introduces her myth? Fascinating. For me as a Greek mythology enthusiast, that is.

The show makes Medusa a victim of Athena. Of course, the show is mainly for kids, so they can't exactly say that, hey, kids, Medusa was Athena's priestess and she was raped by Poseidon, YEP, or protagonist's father, IN Athena's temple, nah, that's neither kid-friendly nor does it endears us to Poseidon. Not that Poseidon is very dear to us viewers/readers at this point, our narrator/protagonist can't stand his own dad.

But still what fascinates me is that even though they twisted the myth to ft the narrative they still managed to evoke Athena's curse as being actually a gift, and Medusa not feeling wretched over her condition but blessed.

Which is not a modern reading of the myth, actually. Saying that Athena couldn't punish Poseidon for his transgression and could only punish Medusa, but did so in a way that would give Medusa weapons to defend herself against whoever and whatever would try to harm her again, is a narrative that exists since Antiquity.

My point is that the re-framing of Medusa's myth, departing from the traditional, non-kid-friendly version while still incorporating both classic and modern elements, is a good frame of reference for the series (book and show)' entire approach to mythology. And I guess I'm saying that mostly for the non-book readers who are discovering this world, many of whom might be Greek mythology fans and might have gone "wait, why is Hades AGAIN presented as the bad guy when he's the chillest, most normal, most stable god in this entire pantheon", because that's a conversation the book fandom has been having (over and over again) for more than a decade.

Anyway, yeah. As a long time book fan and a show appreciative, here's my advice to anyone who knows WAY too much about Greek myths and still want to enjoy the ride without going every five minutes "wait, that's not correct": reframe. Contemporary rewritings, modern audiences and Fantasy genre.

Okay but can someone (if I write this myself I don't trust my own ability to do it justice it probably wouldn't be good enough) entertain the idea for a fic where its SpoilOfWar!Reader in ancient times:

1. RomanSoldier!Simon, Gaz, and Soap who bring SpoilOfWar!Reader with them on their journey back to Rome to retired general now RomanSenator!Price knowing that they would be a perfect addition to their home. SpoilOfWar!Reader complains and fights the entire way, expecting to be treated badly and turned into a slave, only to be very confused when these four romans begin lavishing them in fine clothes and jewels and treating them like a wife. Another roman citizen doesn't take kindly to that? How unfortunate for them since no one wants to incur the 141s wrath. Unfortunately this includes reader--because at the end of the day you certainly still view yourself as a spoil of war which leads to interesting debates.

2. SpartanSoldiers!141 taking reader as a spoil of war after they find them fighting back against one of their own and (nearly) winnng. They're impressed, like to the point where they just know they have to have reader as a spoil once their little war is done. Reader disagrees, doing everything in their power to prove that Sparta is worse than where they came from since the 141 act as if being a spoil of war was a favour. (And did they mention that Spartan women have more rights than the city-state reader came from?) They certainly lay on the promises that in time you'll be better off.

Bonus for AncientDeity!141:

Reader who escapes capture from being a spoil of war to a man named Graves. Desperately running and finding themselves at the Necromanteion (in our world, this is a temple for Hades and Persephone, but lets pretend the pantheon of this one is....different) where they pray to whatever Gods this temple is for only to accidentally summon the 141. Price, Simon, Gaz, and Johnny are all Underworld deities--they happen to rule it, together--and...well Godhood and immortality can be given to mortals. They know by just one look that they want to keep reader and reader prayed for help. A deal is struck. Pomegranate seeds are given. Which is where poor reader finds themselves: somehow immortal, bound to four underworld deities, and why are there flowers sprouting wherever they touch???

Vash, the god of Peace

Based on both the goddesses Persephone and Eirene

He, Tesla and Nai were born from the stars and were raised by the goddess of wisdom Rem, when they descended upon Mt. Olympus.

During the Trojan war he and Tesla were both kidnapped by a group of Trojan soldiers. Tesla later died at the hands of these soldiers while Vash had lost his left arm and nearly joined his sister in an early grave because of the torture they put him through before Nai found him.

His lost arm had gotten replaced by a metal one that Brad (Hephaistos) had built.

While Nai grew to resent mortals for what they did to his siblings, Vash learnt to move on and embrace humanity in its fullest, the good and the bad. "

Because Vash failed to see the warning signs of Nai's growing paranoia, he did not see it coming when Nai locked him up inside the "golden cage", a hidden room in the heart of Mt. Olympus.

Spent over 800 years locked away inside the golden cage with only Nai being able to visit him.

Eventually managed to escape with the help of Meryl (Artemis) and Roberto (A Satyr) and flee to a small sanctuary dedicated to him and Nai in the plain of Nysa.

There he meets the sanctuary's only priest, Wolfwood and slowly begins to realise just how much Nai has corrupted the cult over the past 8 centuries with its followers only seeing peace as either a direct result or mere by-product of war.

pretends to be a mortal temple servant named Eriks while hiding in the sanctuary of Nysa.

spends his day either helping Wolfwood in the temple or helping the people in the town near the sanctuary.

claims his healing powers were a gift he recieved from the gods as a cover-up
