Melvin Morris became a Green Beret in 1961. Many years later in 2014 he received the Medal of Honor for his heroism in Vietnam when he used a small number of available grenades to repel a larger enemy force. He was shot several times during the encounter, but he survived the war and is currently 79 years old.

This very same G.I. Joe was the first I ever received.  I don’t even remember what else I got that Christmas because I spent the whole day playing with this.
I was very upset the following morning when I could not find him anywhere.  Me sainted mum, seeing how distraught I was, showed me where he was hidden amongst the branches of the Christmas tree.    I was doubly shocked when I saw that his face was covered with camouflage paint, there was a bandana around his head with tiny twigs stuck in it, and other modifications had been made to his uniform so he blended in better with the tree.
Mum explained that me sainted da had stayed up most of the night playing with G.I. Joe!  Da decided that Joe’s jungle warfare uniform wasn’t authentic enough, so he took it upon himself to make the modifications to make Joe more “realistic.”
I was so glad Da had to go back to work the next day so I didn’t have to share Joe anymore.  That is, until my younger brothers started showing up soon thereafter.

A Green Beret must speak at least one Mid-East language and be deeply immersed in cultural training and critical thinking.
Training a Soldier to go on target, kick in doors and inflict lethal violence in a kinetic environment can be done relatively easily. Teaching Soldiers a foreign language and training them in nuanced thinking so they can link up with surrogate forces to conduct guerrilla warfare with less-than-traditional oversight can also be accomplished. The magic of the Green Berets is that they can do both missions
Trained killers with nuanced minds. The Green Beret is the living embodiment of what the military calls “full-spectrum mission operators.”
