growing up in this day in age feels so unreal but so genuinely terrifying. there are so many things that are happening and you’re “too young” to do anything about it. the threat of going to school and getting shot because some person decided to be trigger happy. the threat of getting shot by the people who are supposed to be protecting you because of your skin color. the threat of your basic body rights getting taken away because some idiots decided to. the threat of going to war because world leaders treat their citizens like fodder. the threat of being raped by someone because they see you more as and object than a human being. the threat of not having food and water because big corporations care more about money then their own planet. the threat of getting hate crimed because of the gender you like or the gender you want to be. growing up as a young adult right now is people telling you you’re “too old” to be ignoring stuff like this but “too young” to be actually dealing with it. i don’t fear storms or hurricanes or tornadoes anymore because there are always other bigger things to fear made by other humans than the natural events.

and on top of all that. there is school and college and grades and being able to complete assignments and your own future and making a living and being able to succeed but you can’t do that because your world caving in on itself and there is always the fear that you won’t make it through the day. either because of your own hand or someone else’s trigger.

growing up in this day in age is so much scarier than it should.

But what about China? 🇨🇳 Why should we care about net zero when China emits more than us? We get this question a lot… thanks for this post @earthbyhelena Why should we change our ways if others won't? Although China has recently emitted a large quantity of greenhouse gas emissions, cumulatively over the past two centuries, European countries - primarily the UK and Germany - have emitted far more than China. Between 1990 and 2016 the UK's production emissions declined by 40%. This gives the impression that the UK is a world leader in decarbonisation. But in the same period, emissions associated with imports to the UK, including travel, rose by 14% - and that's just the stuff we know about and have counted. While this argument stands for the UK, for the USA these stats are even starker. This is not to say we should not be encouraging green, clean development in other countries, but finger pointing and whataboutism are distracting from decarbonisation efforts in countries like the UK, who have a moral obligation to reduce emissions based on historic and existing fossil fuel practices.
