Squad
Maggie Tokuda-Hall
Publisher: Greenwillow Books
Genre: horror, young adult
Year: 2021
It's spooky season, and we know what that means... time to read some scary shit! The only problem—I've been in a bit of a reading slump and I've got a lot going on right now, so I picked up this copy when it came through the book drop at the library and I had to give it a read.
This is a YA graphic novel, which I would describe as a teen revenge fantasy à la Jennifer's Body. Becca has just moved to a new school and she's desperate to fit in. When she gives a stranger a tampon in the bathroom, she is launched into a whole new life wherein she is initiated into a pack of man-eating werewolves.
Except these werewolves are a pack of teenage girls.
The story is a lot darker than I'd expect, and honestly I thought it would be a lot better as an adult graphic novel rather than YA. In order to keep it YA they gloss over a lot of the horror elements, which almost makes it even more horror-y but unintentionally.
Spoiler
When the pack alpha upsets the leader of another pack, they kill her and Becca and her girlfriend eat her heart out, literally so they can stop being werewolves. Then Becca and her girlfriend go on a date to homecoming 🤣
End Spoiler
I mean, I did like the themes of female rage, and I definitely appreciated how they only went after sleazy guys, but the fact that they couldn't confront some themes and plot elements because it was YA really took away from it for me.
Overall I think I'm a fan of this sapphic spooky read, I just wish it embraced itself in all its gory glory.

DM: Do you guys want to play again or head to the other table?
Marigold: I don't want to push the bat out of the game, but I'll pull up a chair and join. Break the rules.
DM: Yeah. The bat is waiting for you guys to be losing, if you lose. Alright, we'll start with Hunt again, so what do you want to start the ante at before we roll?
Hunt: I'll throw in a silver.
DM: Okay. Nathaniel?
Nathaniel: I'll add a silver.
DM: Marigold?
Marigold: Does it have to be coins now?
DM: Yeah, Hunt is betting just coins.
Marigold: Terrible.
Hunt: That's all I have!
DM: But if Hunt wins this pot then, you know, you can bid something else too if you think it's of equal value.
Marigold: I don't have any silver.
DM: If you think your pastry is worth a silver you can put that in and Hunt would have something else to bet with if she wins.
Marigold: I will put in my silver sand which is the same color.
Hunt (OOC): Ahh.
DM: Ah-ha, there we go. The bat will also put in a silver coin. Go ahead and roll your d8 and we start the betting with Hunt.
Hunt: I'll call.
DM: Nathaniel?
Nathaniel: I'll raise a silver.
DM: Marigold, do you want to raise a silver or raise higher?
Marigold: I will raise higher.
DM: Okay, what do you put in.
Marigold: I will put the name that I got.
DM: Okay, the bat will also put in a small scrap of paper with a name. So Nathaniel if you want to stay in, you'll need to raise up to a name or fold. Hunt if you want to stay in, you'll have to bet a name, you have extras.
Hunt (OOC): I was about to ask, do we still have the names that Jeremiah had given us or...
DM: Yes, so you do still have those little vials.
Hunt: I will bet a name.
DM: Okay.
Hunt: The name I'm betting David Bowie. I believe that's still among us.
DM: Great.
Nathaniel: Okay, I don't think I have a name though.
DM: You did notice when the badger put in names then everyone else was able to put in something they thought was equal value, so if you have something else that--
Marigold (OOC): Just put in gears or something.
Nathaniel: I put in a griffon feather.
DM: Okay.
Marigold: Oooh. I want the griffon feather.

Katzenjammer - Francesca Zappia
Cat lives in her high school. She never leaves, and for a long time her school has provided her with everything she needs. But now things are changing. The hallways contract and expand along with the school’s breathing, and the showers in the bathroom run a bloody red. Cat’s best friend is slowly turning into cardboard, and instead of a face, Cat has a cat mask made of her own hardened flesh.
Cat doesn’t remember why she is trapped in her school or why half of them—Cat included—are slowly transforming. Escaping has always been the one impossibility in her school’s upside-down world. But to save herself from the eventual self-destruction all the students face, Cat must find the way out. And to do that, she’ll have to remember what put her there in the first place.
tw: body horror/dismemberment, bullying, death, gaslighting, gore, hangings, homophobia, mentions of eating disorders, mass murder, murder, mutilation, school shooting, self-mutilation, vandalism, violence
