Grey's Anatomy: We've Only Just Begun (20x01)

And we're back! Crazy that this is the 20th season. I saw that Station 19 is ending after this season, which means Grey's has a very solid chance of outlasting another spinoff! Let's dive right in.

Cons:

I am still repulsed by Jo and Link, I cannot help it. They just do absolutely nothing for me and it feels like such a forced, lazy writing choice. I think part of it is just that Jo and Alex, and Amelia and Link, both felt like real, organic, interesting romances to me that were earned over a long period of time, and this is just like... eh, throw the leftovers together I guess.

My Owen and Teddy dislike will never go away, but in this episode it wasn't so much that they annoyed me as that the storyline felt completely unnecessary? Teddy collapsing and needing emergency surgery and potentially dying felt like even more of a lazy tacked on drama for the cliffhanger last season than I'm used to with this show.

Pros:

The good news for the future of this show is that I do continue to be interested by our intern characters, our new crop of leads. Jules and Blue with their awkward, hostile attraction and connection, Adams and Simone with their obstacles as they continue their burgeoning love story, Yasuda with her career doubts and anxieties. And in even more good news, Nick is leaving the hospital: I'm annoyed that it's to go be with Meredith, who deserves better than that stick in the mud, but at least that means he hopefully won't be around as much anymore.

This show is famous for its ridiculous disaster scenarios, and I like that it knows how to have fun with them and also comment on current events. The self-driving car malfunctioning and slamming again and again into the ambulance was a wacky scenario but also a believable extrapolation from stuff that's happened in real life, and it also gives an new and interesting challenge to several of the characters. I like that Adams and Simone have to make some of their own tough calls in the ambulance where they're trapped, but also have Meredith and Bailey outside guiding them through. Kind of a poignant metaphor for the current direction of the show, in a way: these characters we've been with for decades at this point are still around, and can still be depended upon, but the new kids have to forge their own path as well. I'm glad the patient in the ambulance survived, as did the guy inside the test car: a stressful and bizarre day of work, but ultimately a win, which I think everyone needed.

In Teddy news, as I said I was a little underwhelmed by the existence of this plot thread to begin with. But I did appreciate Winston being calm under pressure and totally handling the situation, saving her life and also steering Owen away from the midst of everything, encouraging him to get some rest. I also like Owen and Amelia having this steady friendship after all the tumult of their past relationship. Seeing her there for him during a difficult moment was great.

I love the role Meredith has in this world, now. She is a steadfast presence, and if this show continues for another decade to come, I hope Ellen Pompeo is willing to keep coming back for a couple episodes a season, so her presence is still felt. We're setting up an interesting plot that can develop in the background: Catherine Fox wants Meredith to drop her controversial takes about Alzheimer's research and go where the funding is, and Meredith actually seemingly agrees to this. She'll take the party line and stop making controversial waves for Catherine to deal with. But... she hands her research off to Amelia, so that it can continue in secret. This is really intriguing, and I actually got a little emotional thinking about Amelia and Meredith working on this project together!

We end with Teddy waking up, thank goodness, Link and Jo sharing a romantic moment (no thank you), and Richard going to an AA meeting to recommit to his sobriety - good for him! I'm excited to see where the show takes us next; there are always enough characters and stories going on in this show that it keeps me hooked, even when some of the characters are... not my favorites. We'll see which way things go from here!

TOP 10 TV SHOWS OF 2022 (imo)

10) Miskina season 1

The first French tv show with a poc main character that does not hate her heritage (cultural and religious) and a beautiful tribute to kabyle algerian weddings and landscapes.

9) This is us season 6

A beautiful (but long awaited) final chapter to one of the best if not the best family contemporary drama. Sad. Emotional. Homely.

8) Parliament, season 2

At last a European political show. The main character is goofy but smart. The show is funny but at the same time we learn a lot about the politcal institutions. The unrequited romance is comical and Liz Kingsman is so good in this.

7) Grey's anatomy season 19

Yay at last the show is renewing itself with a new class of interns, endearing new characters with interesting backgrounds.

6) Undone, season 2

A beautiful, unique production. This season has such important social commentary on grief and mental health. The magical realism is so well done and it takes us on philosophical meanderings of what ifs... Creative. Must watch.

5) Derry girls, season 3

A perfect ending for this coming of age show with the good friday agreement as the background historical moment to finish up their teenage years.

4) Aaaaand it's a tie for the 4th place

Killing eve season 4 // Outlander season 6

I am obsessed with these two shows so I'm so disappointed that they do not get to be in the podium for me this year but it is what it is...

2) The handmaid's tale season 5

Wow what a season. Such beautiful cinematography. Discussions around revenge and mental health. The political thriller of the first seasons is back in this one and the suspense is thrilling !!

1) Severance, season 1

This is such an underrated show about the alienation of workers in a company that cuts their memories when they enter the building. A social commentary on corporate world obviously... ironically produced by Apple 😭

Thoughts on Grey’s Anatomy: 18X17

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

I have to say I enjoyed this episode apart from Nick and Link’s storylines. I liked that we got more backstory on Winston and his brother Wendell. We have a better understanding of their strained relationship and knowing all of that I think he should absolutely cut ties. While I understand that there's that pull to be there for family when they need you Wendell has shown Winston time and time again since they were kids exactly who he is. As Shonda Rhimes always says, when someone shows you who they are believe them. Wendell has shown Winston who he is and it's time they clear the air and that Winston makes it clear that he will not be helping Wendell with his latest mess or any other mess he gets himself into going forward.

I mean the police could have very well shot and killed Winston, Wendell, and Wendell’s friend when they were teenagers. You’d think that experience and how they narrowly escaped death would have scared Wendell straight and made him feel indebted to Winston, but instead he’s continued to be a fast talking con artist who takes advantage of people around him. It’s time for Winston to make it clear that he won’t be caught up in his schemes anymore. I’m happy Bailey has made amends with Meredith. What Bailey said was hurtful and cruel and she shouldn't have said what she said the way she said it. While I'm glad they made up the fact that Nick factored so heavily into that storyline bothered me.

While he was good with Levi in this episode and he's clearly a good surgeon and teacher his character irks me to no end this season. I don't think Meredith's new boyfriend whose clearly not interested in staying in Seattle long term is the one to solve all the problems Grey Sloan has created for itself in the face of the doctor shortage. Also, I just can’t take him seriously as a doctor because he doesn’t act or look like one. He’s always looking down at his feet, he doesn’t make eye contact with other people half the time, he’s always tired or looks like he’s out of it, and he dresses so sloppily. He doesn’t look professional or attractive at all. Yet again another storyline where I can’t understand what Meredith sees in him.

I’m glad that Jo and Link finally had it out and she admitted that she was in love with him because she needed to get that off her chest and Link was being such a jerk and an irresponsible doctor in this episode. Link has been a jerk all season and I honestly don't get it. They took him from being the most supportive and understanding guy to a total jerk overnight for no reason. With the way Link has been acting he doesn't deserve Jo. I'm Team Todd all the way. I’m honestly not sure why Teddy is struggling so much to accept Leo as they are and deal with the situation as it is. Owen mentions in therapy that she likes rules and order and doesn't like to just wait and see so I'm guessing that might be it?

There's no clear path forward with Leo's identity journey and that's thrown her for a loop? I hope Amelia's advice helped although I don't know why Amelia isn't in therapy with them as she's Leo's aunt and a part of the parenting team. On top of that Kai is non-binary and in a good place to help them so I don't know why those two storylines have been separated. I’m not surprised to find out that Catherine's cancer is progressing. I knew something was up when Meredith realized that Richard had accidentally drank a marijuana infused drink and that he was stoned. Richard outright said he couldn't understand why Catherine would bring that into the house knowing that he's in recovery and immediately I thought it has to be to help with her cancer. There must be something wrong. Catherine's a doctor. There's no other reason she would willingly bring something like that into the house otherwise.

Also, what is it with men that they see something that's clearly labelled as belonging to someone else or it's clearly not intended for them and they decide it's okay to drink or eat it? My favourite moment of the episode was when Richard became enamoured with the sculpture in his office of a bear holding a fish! That cracked me up. As Richard says to Meredith, "It had to be you." Of all the people to find Richard unintentionally stoned it had to be Meredith! LOL! I also really loved the moment when he said he understood why Meredith wanted to leave because Seattle felt haunted and he said that he felt that way when Ellis died and Meredith said, “You mean Adele?” and he said no. It was really touching and poignant and bittersweet.

REVIEW: Anatomy: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz

5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“I'm not a fool, Jack Currer, no matter how you might think of me.” “Oh, I assure, Miss Sinnett, I've taken you for a lot of things, but a fool was never one of them.”

Hazel is a 17-year-old lady who wants to be a surgeon. Such a thing is not allowed, nor expected of a woman in the 1800s. Since birth, it was decided that she will marry her cousin Bernard, the future Viscount. She never minded the idea of it so much, as Bernard has always been kind and seemingly supported her fantasies. But her head has never been in marriage, but books of anatomy, surgical procedures, etc.

Jack is a resurrection man. He steals bodies from their graves and then sells them for profit to doctors and surgeons who wish to teach and experiment for the advancement of science. When Hazel is turned away from a lecture due to being a woman, she strikes up a deal with the prominent Doctor Beecham. If she is to pass the physician's exam without attending the courses, he will vouch for her and also enable other women to study as well. That's when she meets Jack as he begins to provide her bodies for studying purposes.

I loved everything about this story. It had the same vibe as The Alienist and The Frankenstein Chronicles (which I loved!). I really enjoyed Hazel as a character. She was sound-minded, and not irrational. I did not feel like she was annoyingly naive or too young in any way. Hazel was pushing the boundaries of her time. As an aristocratic young lady who is assumed to have a fragile mind and meant produce heirs, she did accomplish a lot!

I did find it funny that she was left to her own devices in her castle. Her staff was there to help her with anything she wanted. No chaperone to pay any attention to her either. She worked out of her castle's dungeon, studying dead bodies, having access to all her money that she used to pay for everything she needed. I thought it was fun, and not the usual constructs of a story in similar settings. I learned a lot too about how it was like back then in terms of health care and how it evolved into what it is today. I know the author researched and provided a decent portrayal of that time.

JACK 😭❤ I love Jack. Him and Hazel are the unlikeliest pair on the outside. But totally meant to be on the inside. Their interactions were sweet and meaningful, yet the romance was not the whole plot. I see now how Anatomy: A Love Story could mean both Hazel's love for human anatomy and also her relationship with Jack. CLEVER!

What a twist at the end, I really didn't see it coming! I CRIED. 🥲 It was the perfect fall read, and I can't wait to start the next book, Immortality!!

Grey's Anatomy: Baby Can I Hold You (20x04)

It was lovely to see Arizona, but I kind of feel like her guest starring here was a bit of a waste, in some ways!

Cons:

This show is usually so good at fanservice, to the point where I find myself rolling my eyes sometimes at it... but damn it all to hell, I can't believe we got Arizona on our screens and nobody mentioned Callie or Sofia?? What the heck is that about! Not even a passing mention to give people hope that they ended up back together, even if they didn't want to confirm it?

This show has been playing chicken with the idea of Richard retiring for such a long time now that it really does get tiresome. We see that he gets frazzled in the OR and has to step out, but Teddy promises to have his back and tell him if he doesn't belong there anymore. I don't know, man, let the dude retire! I don't want to watch him dealing with his sobriety and his age and his career for the bajillionth time, actually.

Lucas feeling bummed out and being a slop and annoying Amelia is just... dude, you are all the thinnest of thin ice with me right now. I was totally with you about Simone being a jerk, but that doesn't give you the license to be a permanent jackass forever.

Pros:

I do like a feel-good success story, and the big fetal brain surgery thing was pretty cool. It's always nice when a show like this lets everybody get a clean win, to offset all the tragedy inherent in the show's DNA. It was nice to see Bailey drink in the magic of the surgical miracle, even if she is still exasperated with the interns for failing to appreciate it and stay in the moment.

But speaking of the interns, I really enjoyed everything with Kwan, Jules, and Yasuda this week.

To start with, I just want to say: Yasuda didn't do anything wrong, and she doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the other four fuck-ups! I'm glad at least Jules acknowledged that this week, and I hope Bailey will ease up a little. She even manages to finish her procedure logs, just in time to be told that she can't get back in the OR until all of them complete theirs. Tough break! I do like that we have this character who comes off a little scatter-brained and intense, and yet we see that she's actually pretty kick-ass at what she's doing.

Meanwhile, Blue freaks out when trying to place a chest tube and Schmitt has to step in and do it. This leads to a great conversation where Schmitt tells him he'll probably always see Maxine in his head when he's stressed or uncertain at work, but that maybe this isn't the worst thing. I love seeing Levi get to be a mentor in this moment, and I continue to love the development of Kwan as he deals with his insecurities and aspirations for his career.

And then Jules: she's the intern character I feel like I understand the least so far, but this was a good episode for her. We meet her brother, who calls himself a doctor but who is actually just a "wellness influencer." I love that she has to spend the episode dealing with his bullshit and then is rewarded with Owen coming in and tearing him down while giving Jules a compliment. She really needed that! And a rare W from Owen Hunt, too, I love it when he does stuff that doesn't annoy the hell out of me.

I hope that Arizona is in another episode this season, because I feel like I didn't get nearly enough time with her! In some ways this episode was a bit of a disappointment, but I still enjoyed several of the pieces and how things are coming together.

The joy these two exude every time they see each other, even if it's just in passing, is so pure… And the way neither of them can contain their excitement in this scene makes it that much more beautiful. Especially with how it parallels another moment, where Grey offered Tim a promotion. That was completely out of her hands. She created an opening but he still had to get the job on merits. She was making a gamble with her career with no guarantee that it would pay off. That's how much she loves him. Of course Tim is unaware of her turmoil, all too happy to tell her the good news. And look at her being so enthusiastic, hitting him in the process - seriously, these two are making 'playful physical violence' a love language. It is so funny to see her suddenly remember where they are and check around her before dialling it down a notch, like she did in Follow-up Day, after catching Grey's and Tim's looks. And her words of affirmation, with the most loving look… the way the lighting is hitting her eyes, making them shinier… You can feel all the love. No words are needed here. The way he whispers the first 'I'm excited', just for them… They are in their own bubble, even though they are standing in the middle of the bull pen, with their colleagues in the vicinity. For two persons who used to avoid PDAs with their previous partners, it's quite telling.

With a final lovetap on his shoulder. His big grin… The twinkles in his eyes… And his little nod at the end, as if he can't believe that this is truly his life… And you know what? I can't believe this is canon either.
