What I wish I could tell Peter: I Love You So Much but I Need to cast others in my play Its not because of your talent its because I want to hone the skills of local actors and revitalize Quahog’s theatre industry... I Would rather have you stay at home and come bring the kids to watch my play instead of auditioning And i wish you could understand this but you are a free person and are allowed to audition if you want...I want to give the people the truest version of the play And i don’t want you to Ruin it with your Antics as usual And i would be so mad if they were to like your version more. What I Told Peter: “Everyone has to audition Peter...”

Vierapril Day 2: Companion
Annabeth is busy brushing Percy down after their morning flight when she spots Alira playing… Is that fetch?... with her massive coeurl. “Is Lenny actually chasing that.. thing?”  Alira turns and waves at Annabeth before jogging over to her, causing Lenny to change direction to bring whatever was in his mouth back to Alira. “Yea! Nero made it for him. It’s bite and claw proof and has an internal thruster that I can program so that it can go farther than what I could ever throw!” Annabeth smiles at what Nero can do when an idea comes to him. “That’s really cool. But that still begs the question as to why Lenny wants to play fetch?” Lenny drops the device at Alira’s feet and goes to give Annabeth a very scratchy lick on the face. Annabeth gives him some scratches under his chin while Alira shrugs. “Honestly, I don’t know. He’s allowed to roam free and hunt, but I think sometimes he gets bored. He’s already an impressive hunter, so this gives him a bit of a challenge and it’s bonding time.” Percy pecks lightly at Annabeth’s shoulder, so she turns to look at him and he starts doing some tip taps and squawks excitedly. “What? Wait, do you wanna play fetch too?” He starts bouncing up and down and Annabeth just has a shocked look on her face. Alira bursts out laughing, “Shall we have a race then?” Lenny yowls in agreement and he and Percy line up. Annabeth has finally shaken herself out of shock, while Alira is busy programming in details to the thruster. “Okay, on your mark, get set, go!!” she yells.
Annabeth and Alira just smile as their two companions race each other. Annabeth raises a hand to the linkpearl in her ear, “Hey Nero, yea, uh-huh, I’m hanging out here with Alira and I’m going to need you to make another one of those indestructible fetch toys for Percy. Yep, and can you make it able to fly in the air? Uh-huh. He’d probably like some agility training too. Thanks! Yep, see you for dinner tomorrow.”
It was a close race, but Annabeth and Alira can tell that Lenny dropped back near the very end to let Percy capture the ball. He squawks and beats his wings in triumph, before running back to Annabeth with Lenny close behind. He drops the ball at her feet and she can tell he is thrumming with excitement. “Well, I’ve ordered you one of your own, but for now, if Lenny is willing, you’ll just have to play together.” The coeurl and griffin start playing around with each other and the girls can’t help but laugh. “He really is just a big cat with wings isn’t he?” “Yep! And you love him all the same.” “Oh of course!”

duuuude that inseparables hyperfixiations has me on the biggest chokehold right now (again). I’m so fucking excited for it. and I’ve been creating random ideas/theories for it based on context clues in trailers/images/soundtrack— all of which is painfully obvious but I just wanna get my thoughts out ;)
‼️ mild spoiler warning
I’m interested to see how their going to portray the relationship struggles between Don and DJ. in "Use Your Imagination" (which slaps btw, go listen to it), it kinda explains how they "loose themselves to spite" and that Don "was lost in a dream/nightmare, too blinded to see he was loosing a friend". this is just after they are "swallowed by a whale" which you see in the first teaser. curiously, compared to the situation in the teaser, the other scene where they save the baby duckling, DJ is more helpful, being enthusiastically loyal as he is. but the teaser makes him seem more unsure of pitching in, most likely due to water being involved, since he cannot get wet. the obvious assumption here is just that, Don is just gonna be a bit ignorant and pushy and that’s what drives them apart.
now, the other day while I was thinking about Don and Dee friendship crumbs (because I like their little bond), i thought, they both typically want the same role in the "hero's journey/story" they're portraying (both societally and theatrically). they both know they’re more than what everyone assumes of them and they want room to grow and prove that. so I imagined the scenario when he is leaving the theater, how he may or may not imply that a part of him is going off to find his own quest so she can have that opportunity there (in both aforementioned aspects, and of course, for her later to actually prove she can genuinely accomplish shit on her own cause girlbossism)— AND WELL, YEAH it’s probably mostly subconsciously due to his frustration and determination to find his purpose in life being the biggest thing on his mind, cause ya know, everyone treats him like an idiot all the time and it’s kinda his breaking point here. but, I just like their little bond that they’ll have (I think)
I guess these kinda lead to my point on my clue as to what the theme is. generally it’s what it takes to be a good friend, a big part is you can’t ignore what’s important to your friends, and they have their own goals they can get to that you have to support. Both DJ and Dee seemingly will show this towards Don, but he might be a little more blindsided to that, cause his aforementioned imagination and determination being his main, overwhelming focus. DJ is lonely and needs someone who actually “appreciates him for himself” (as expressed in “Waffle Rap” lyrics). and Dee, simply just doesn’t want to feel weak and doesn’t need opportunities “given” to her, cause the whole point of her arc is she works hard to prove it herself. It all comes down to respecting your friends and not overlooking them and their needs, which I’m sure happens by the end.
another sub-theme idea that ties into Don’s arc that they also might be trying to portray here is that, you don’t necessarily have to be recognized as a legendary hero or jump to great lengths to have a good legacy. being a great friend and doing the right thing for the ones you love is certainly a powerful impact you could make initially. going by jeremie degruson’s other film’s messages, it might be along the lines of this tbh.
these are a few of my several cents I’m inserting here. if you read my ramblings on goofy belgian cartoons, thank you, I love you. stream puggy and the soundtrack for this movie (which is also by puggy) 🙌

Hi newcomers!
This post is to tell ya what this blog is all about! :) First of all, thank you for being here! I am Rocky, more consistently known as “cannibal-nightmares,” a long-time internet dweller and artist. I make comics, mostly.
As per the title of the blog, this page is a dedication to all variations of “The Boys Next Door,” from the 1996 film to the stage production! :) I first saw TBND in high school theater, and was immediately pulled in by the sheer compassion in the portrayal of its characters. I am attempting to create an archive of sorts to preserve what I care so deeply about.
Links and Resources!

The 1996 film is streaming on Hallmark Movies Now via Amazon There are also uploads of the full movie on YouTube, including a rough 4:3 copy and a widescreen edition that’s crystal-clear... ;)
“Wait, I’m new here; I have never seen this movie or play. What is it about and why should I care?” “The Boys Next Door” is a stage play written by Tom Griffin. It is about four disabled men living in a group home who face their fears and gain new triumphs all while their caregiver prepares to leave them for a new career. The 1996 Hallmark Hall of Fame movie features to-become unmistakable actors including Tony Goldwyn, Nathan Lane, Courtney B. Vance, Michael Jeter, Robert Sean Leonard, and Mare Winningham. It was nominated four times for various awards (including two Emmys), and has won two others.

Two people who make me think of Travis McElroy are Weird Al and King Richard from Galavant. In his songs Al gives off the same silly energy, Richard both has the silliness and a very similar way of talking.
It's somehow entirely a coincidence too bc i felt these ways before i knew that he loves galavant and was the one who talked to weird al in the mbmbam tv show

HotGuy is the bravest, sharpest, most handsomest hero in all of Hermit City. That’s what he’d tell you, anyway. Nobody can agree on what HotGuy is. A hero to some, villain to others. There’s a universal agreement he’s a wanna-be show off of some kind. Him and that pesky bird…
Scar is determined to win over the citys’ hearts (and charitable diamonds) so who better to face off against than King Cleo? With his charming smile, trusty bow, and sidekick CuteGuy, nothing can go wrong!
Coming soon to a theater near you /j
(but these are screenshot style pieces for what I imagine an animated hotguy movie would look like. More ramblings about this au below)
[trailer] / 1
King Cleo would IMMEDIATELY put them in their place like a teacher lecturing the entire class on how they’ve been misbehaving. But that’s no fun right away, so why not let them learn their lesson? >:)
HotGuy and CuteGuy are an iconic duo in Hermit City. King Cleo and Entropy (Cub) are another iconic duo. Whether each team is heroic or villainous depends on who you ask. Even the city residents are split on opinions
Except Bdubs. He runs a podcast spilling conspiracy theories and dragging almost every “hero” name into the mud (his attitude is very inspired by J. Jonah Jameson from Spiderman). He believes they’re menaces and should stay out of the city’s local problems because 9/10 they somehow make it worse. He’s very critical of these 4 in particular, and it doesn’t help that they all like to personally mess with him for the fun of it
Far off in the city outskirts, a living folktale hides in the forest. An amalgamation of creatures that make up one giant monster, and coming across their path is…certainly an experience. They speak in poetry and think out loud, peering deep into the soul of their visitor with just a few words. Sightings are few and far in between, but each interaction is memorable- to say the least. Their name is Joe Hills. A very close friend to King Cleo (but nobody else knows that)
And! an explanation to HotGuy’s mobility aid
With the best high-tech, Scar’s wheelchair can reshape into a mechanical griffin with the press of a button. It lets him take to the sky and hotguy targets! Griffins also have conflicting symbolism, which reflects his persona
Good and Evil. Light and Dark. They’re said to be harbingers of chaos. Mischief certainly seems to follow HotGuy wherever he goes. Be wary of his smirk
They’re also said to be gentle protectors. He shows up to help citizens and tiny creatures alike. With a voice so soothing, any trouble they face is wiped off like nothing (or, ends up feeling a little easier to handle)
Griffins are one of the most remarkable creatures in mythology, their stories told and twisted through generations, but how does the griffin tell his own story?
I’ve got a few ideas I wanna draw so I’ll be posting more of this under #hotguy wotk au

@rowzeoli replied to your post “Do you think part of the D20 journalistic bias...”:
I rarely go on tumblr so sorry if you see me spamming your posts tonight, but I really enjoy your perspective and thoughts! I think I'm the journalist you're referencing in regards to the Fantasy High Junior Year article and unfortunately 1) journalists only get access to interview subjects at very specific junctions (usually press day before the series goes out or halfway through) 2) most publications are honestly Going Through It and cutting freelance rates and just not paying to cover AP
So I'll be totally honest - I post on Tumblr because I assume it is far more unlikely to be seen and so I can vent freely (hence the fairly harsh tone of the criticism in the original post), but I guess this is a chance to clarify. I don't expect anything to change, nor do I expect you to respond; indeed, I wouldn't blame you if you block me after this. But if readership is down (and who knows? maybe it's not and I'm the outlier), this may be illuminating.
The issue with your specific article - which I brought up relatively tangential to the larger point of "at this point I think Polygon's AP/TTRPG coverage is a waste of time to read" isn't really that it's only an early look at the series; and because Fantasy High Junior Year is at this time ongoing, it's honestly entirely valid that there hasn't been a follow-up. It's, well, the "surface-level and factually wrong" issue.
Dimension 20 was by no means the pioneer of remote recording as you claim in your article; that had long been the default of smaller recorded AP shows well before pandemic lockdown for the simple reason that if you're not a media company the overhead is very low - no need to have a dedicated space or even cameras beyond decent laptops. Burrow's End's puppetry? Critical Role's Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Crystal Palace did shadow puppets in 2019. They had diagetic audio on the main campaign as early as 2016. I don't even like Kollok, but that's had complex set design since 2019. Meanwhile premise of the article is yet another rehash of Polygon's "Dimension 20 is CHANGING THE GAME" constant drumbeat, while your actual pull quotes from Brennan Lee Mulligan are him musing that this is simply an entry in an ancient tradition of storytelling and isn't, in fact, terribly novel. The interview fails utterly to back up your point and indeed contradicts it; I get that the timeline was probably tight but this is outright incorrect in multiple places and your argument isn't just unsupported; it's outright dismissed by the very person you claim is proving it. If the premise came before the interview, it needed to be reworked afterwards, and if it came after the interview…I'm not sure what to say, really.
This isn't your article, and I'm putting it here to illustrate that this has been a pattern for Polygon's AP coverage specifically. This article about Worlds Beyond Number is perhaps my favorite example of "this is not serious journalism:" Rusty Quill Gaming, The Adventure Zone, Friends at the Table, and NADDPod are all theater of the mind long-running podcasts (RQG's campaign lasted a whopping 7 years of real time) and that's just off the top of my head; the idea of a long-running edited audio podcast being novel is laughable. RQG and TAZ both started at level 1; I'm not personally familiar with Friends at the Table. I don't actually think starting at level 1 vs. 2 is terribly important in storytelling in the first place other than that a few D&D classes pick their subclass at L2 and that choice can be narratively relevant, which it was in TAZ; however, some classes pick a subclass at L3 so you can still achieve this with a level 2 start (as Critical Role's second campaign does). Both Emily Axford of NADDPod and Griffin McElroy of TAZ have long been composing their own music and RQG is heavily sound designed. These are not obscure pulls, either; these are some of the more well-known names in the space.
At this point, Polygon AP/TTRPG articles - by multiple different writers - simply feel like madlibs: "(actual play show) is groundbreaking in its (thing that other shows have been doing for 5+ years); I especially liked (visual effect) and (incorrect understanding of TTRPG mechanics)."
The people I allude to in the post you responded to as having egregiously uncharitable and sanctimonious takes on Daggerheart (within, again, hours of its publication) are a frequent Polygon contributor and a Rascal editor and they further my mistrust of those publications: There is this constant insistence that everything they like be "groundbreaking" and "innovating" and they will claim this even when it's demonstrably not the case, as the above examples note. As Mulligan says in your article "it’s important to keep new artists with new experiences and backgrounds flowing in," and yet by focusing intensely on high production values (difficult for smaller indie upstarts to have) and by incorrectly claiming that a well-established media company within the space like D20 invented a number of things it flat out did not, this journalism is actively, if unintentionally, working against that goal. As I put it elsewhere, Polygon's bizarre pedestaling of Dimension 20 and simultaneous putdowns of Critical Role (which turn into wild contortions when D20 mainstays like Mulligan or Aabria Iyengar collaborate with CR; for that matter others besides me have observed that Polygon acts like Spenser Starke is two different people, the genius who created Alice is Missing and the knuckle-dragging moron who put out Candela Obscura and Daggerheart) coupled with the obsession with production values over story has the whiff of claiming they're the champion of the little guy for sticking it to the 700 lb gorilla in the space and then focusing on 500 lb gorillas while making it impossible for smaller monkeys to compete because most brand new shows without the name recognition of someone like Mulligan involved can't exactly hire Rick Perry to do their models or Taylor Moore to do sound design.
I suppose a good way to put this, since I've run into this in many spaces, not just AP/TTRPG or even journalism, is that bias on its own in a subjective medium isn't inherently bad; but if something is so nakedly biased against something I love, I will, naturally, turn to it with a far more critical eye, and if its arguments are not ironclad I'm going to start noticing every structural issue in every argument and every tiny mistake. Sure, as a fan of Critical Role, and as someone who feels that Kollok was nigh-unwatchable and that Burrow's End was promising in parts but deeply flawed, I disagreed with Polygon's nonstop mud-slinging towards the former and glowing, verging on fawning reviews of the latter two. But that's not entirely damning on its own; I do get that not everyone will like Critical Role and that some people will love Kollok or Burrow's End for valid reasons. What's damning is the journalism itself is riddled with factual errors and the analysis is so weak that to call the arguments a flimsy house of cards would be generous. The opposite is also true; if Polygon's lead editor were out here repeatedly misspelling the name of one of the main characters in Worlds Beyond Number (note: this has since been corrected) but the articles had compelling arguments, even ones I disagreed with, I'd be far more forgiving, but as is? It's offering me absolutely nothing: it's poorly researched, it's poorly structured, it's poorly written, it's poorly copy-edited, and it shits on things I like seemingly just for clicks. I'm done giving clicks.
I am deeply sympathetic to the pressures facing digital journalism and media and the arts in general; as someone who is fortunate enough not to personally face those pressures and has the income to be a patron, I would love to help in my small way (and I do, at least, financially support a number of the AP shows I love). But the quality of some of this journalism is truly so bad that I can't bring myself to support the institutions putting it out; it's "dead dove do not eat" until such time as someone whose analysis and opinions I do trust cites them (or, perhaps, until there is a sea change of lead editorship). I know that this won't help the crunch, and may make it worse, but I just can't because the quality is so poor. I don't have a good solution to how to write about something that takes a lot of time to watch and process and about which the articles pay very little in return, but the current strategy of bouncing between uninformed provocateur and utter sycophant depending on the show and creators; of drooling over such surface features as shiny production and falsely claiming everything is "groundbreaking" while getting the most basic facts wrong has driven me away.

My Black Christmas Informational Masterlist(?):
Every now and then I get asked for links or sources to some of the things I post and/or reference. This serves to be easy access to anyone interested in more info regarding the film, Bob Clark, or Billy in general. I'm sure I will expand with more links or info at some point, but here are the basics.
Docs and Commentaries:
youtube
Commentary featuring Nick Mancuso reprising his role as Billy. If you're not entirely interested in seeing Billy be represented as something beyond the figure in the movie or are looking to gain more knowledge on the creation of Black Christmas, this probably isn't for you.
youtube
Just as the title says, this is a Mini-Documentary that explores Black Christmas, its legacy, and a look into it's production. If your here for more info on Billy I HIGHLY recommend this as Nick has some incredibly interesting insight. Includes Lynne Griffin, John Saxon, along with Carl Zitter. Also includes some older clips of Albert J (Black Christmas's Camera Man), Bob Clark, Olivia Hussey, and Margot Kidder.
youtube
Closest thing to an ACTUAL documentary on Black Christmas I've seen. Goes good into detail about the production and creation of Black Christmas going from "The Babysitter" to "Stop Me".
There are a TON more extra's from the special release in 2015. Here is a playlist which compiles all that are publicly available. This does not include Bob Clarks actual commentary, nor Keir and John's. I own those on DVD, and I'll see what I can do about converting them onto my laptop, but I majorly recommend purchasing the 4k re-release from last year if you're looking for them. It's def worth your money and time if you're interested.
Tv Spots, Radio, etc:
youtube
youtube
youtube
youtube
Actual Documents:
2nd stage of the Black Christmas screenplays. Tread VERY lightly with this if you are sensitive to topics such as CSA and Child abuse, if you catch my drift. Has some problems with pages being turned upside down, but that's nothing I can fix at the moment.
The novelization based off of the "Stop Me" Screenplay. Questionable canonical status, but that's up to you. As it is based off "Stop Me" I am once again warning you to tread lightly and take care of yourself as the same warnings previous very much apply here.
ETC:
Not sure what to categorize this as, but I frequently see this slip under the radar of many people.
If you're looking at this masterlist because all of a sudden you've gained a fascination with this stupid fucking misogynist like I did, YOU WANT TO HEAR THIS! It is from Billy's POV and it gives a great insight into his mind and uses audio from the film, which if you rewatch the film after listening to this oh my god you will not be able to stop hearing shit. (Such as the fact I did not notice the music and wind in the beginning of the film when Billy enters the attic is literally just a bunch of people whispering his name.) Give it a listen, but again, tread lightly, if you, once again, catch my drift.
