...the crows in the hunger games

so i've written a really freaking long fanfic about it. introducing…sleep till death (ao3)

kaz brekker: leader of the dregs in district 12 and brother to one of the many victims of the hunger games. inej ghafa: a girl doing her best to care for her little brother in district 11 after their parents mysterious disappearance, no matter the cost.

jesper fahey: a secret grisha in district 11, forced to be entered for the games to keep his powers hidden.

nina zenik: a grisha rebel from district 8 who volunteered to save the life of another.

matthias helvar: member of the druskelle in district 2, training to be a peacekeeper, determined to slaughter any grisha who dares to try and win the games.

wylan van eck: the disappointment of a victor family from district 1, reaped by the influence of his father and expected to never return home.

may the odds be ever in their favor.

don't you ever just think about how kaz said "i'm a cripple. that's my tell. no one's ever smart enough to look for the others." the others. i think, especially with the show, a lot of us forget that and think his only real weakness is inej. but it isn't. it's definitely jesper too, the brother he cannot lose again. and i know he means the other crows as well. because that's kaz's character. deep down the way to hurt him is to hurt the people he cares about. he's extremely loyal and his revenge plot against pekka was to avenge his brother. his biggest motivation isn't money, it's the protection and security he can give the people he cares about with it. and those people are his tells

That may seem random 😭 but I want to know what your favorite pro Darkling bloggers are.

That's a beautiful question actually. Because it also gives me an excuse to give kudos to some amazing pro Darkling bloggers out there.

I won't rank them of course and I have many but my most favorite are:

@stromuprisahat (I agree with everything she says about the Darkling. Also I absolutely love her posts where she throws dirt at the good guys. Like, yes girl remind me how they suck actually 😭)

@starlesszova (her love for the Darklina ship is immense. Also she gives light to the Darkling's dark side as well but that doesn't stop her from stanning him and standing by his side even more!)

@theweeklydiscourse (if you haven't read her metas, go read them now. She puts her thoughts into words so beautifully and the things she criticizes the Grishaverse and its author about are only facts)

@is-today-tomorrow-in-nz (same thing as @theweeklydiscourse. Her criticism about the good guys' bullshit and actions is so true and she understands the Darkling so well)

@greensaplinggrace (her page is only facts about the Grishaverse and the Darkling. She brushes off neither his bad actions nor his good ones)

@darklinaforever (the way she has exposed the fandom's and the antis' bullshit needs to be applauded)

All these pages support Aleksander and none of them ignore his bad side. But they just prefer to dig deeper not only inside his psychology but also the Grishaverse's problematic messages and the author's failed attempt to deliver a cohesive, satisfying and non-problematic story. They also acknowledge how toxic that fictional world and society is and how it had affected the characters' personality and actions.

Also, all of them have critical thinking. They don't eat whatever the author says with the spoon but on the contrary they judge based on their own opinion and common sense. Which is something very important.

sleep till death - a six of crows hunger games au

What is now only Ravka used to be many different countries and cities...Fjerda, Kerch, Shu Han. Now, there is only Ravka, it's Capitol, and the Districts. Every year tributes are chosen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, where only one will survive and be crowned Victor.

There are six tributes that blend into the other eighteen but will prove themselves more than just a bloody spectacle to watch die on-screen:

A Capitol loyalist with a life mission he never asked for.

A secret Grisha who risked getting Reaped to hide his powers.

A shamed son of a Victor with a renowned lineage.

A performer who's life changed when her parents went missing.

A Heartrender who was never supposed to volounteer.

A thief with a thirst for vengeance.

Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible Game.

Kaz and the Crows might just be able to change the very nature of Ravka...if they don't kill each other first.

Mal concept(s)

While I was at making Alina and Darkling concept art/sketches, I tried to add more and more characters, one of them being Mal.

Now, I know, I know; he looks a lot like the show Mal but I can't help but love the show cast; I think they were very well casted. And, sorry again, I can't imagine Mal, a soldier, not having a sort of a buzzcut.

Also a bit of sad Mal because the last 100 pages of the first book made me sob at 2AM.

my favorite interpretation of him is as a man who WANTS that companionship and love but. He’s been burned so many times before, falling in love with people he outlived due to war and his slower aging. So he can’t allow himself to be hurt like that again. Deep inside his little black heart he would love to be equals with Alina but unfortunately years of trauma and pain have left him entirely unable to exist in a relationship that doesn’t have a power imbalance in his favor. He doesn’t know how to let go of his want for power even in his relationships anymore. And now that he needs Alina for his Grand Schemes, well he definitely can’t fall in love with her without potentially fucking up his plan, right? He needs her to do many very specific things and he can’t be blinded by Real Emotion that might make him change his mind so instead he keeps her at arms length while making her THINK her feelings are requited and he pulls her strings to get her to do what he needs so that his centuries of living will have paid off. And deep deep down the man he used to be yearns to have built something real with her, to have companionship who won’t die in the blink of an eye, someone who understands this Otherness he experiences, an equal. If only the man he’d become could stand to let go of the reins in any relationship for more than like. Thirty seconds. Lol

I think this is more favorable than how I would personally word it! But yeah, I’d say he wants companionship and human connection at all, however never at the cost of true, personal vulnerability. I don’t think he’d genuinely want an equal relationship, because that would necessitate putting himself within someone else’s power.

I also don’t think he’s necessarily been burned in the sense of giving many relationships a chance with any sort of emotional openness. Like we see him resolve to not do that in Demon in the Wood, where he’s like twelve. That’s basically the entire purpose of that story! While he’s definitely grown more and more jaded and uh insane in his white knuckle need for control and emotional self-mastery, I think that’s through realizing that he’s never been as guarded as he’d like to be. And I’d read that gradual excising of all emotional weakness a deliberate thing, where each time he’s realized that he’s grown to care about something/someone despite himself and being royally pissed about it until he finally calcified into the piece of work we see in canon!

Taking all that into account, I wouldn’t say I personally interpret him as having a conscious desire for an equal relationship of any sort? He can only feel secure in a dynamic where he has all of the power, and is therefore not in danger of any sort of hurt or vulnerability. But through that intense repression, I think he also ends up not being in control as both confounding and tantalizing. Hence him outrage spiraling SO HARD at Alina being nothing like he wanted her to be, and not nearly as in love with him as he is obsessed with her.

Anyway, that’s not even getting into how he went through an unknown amount of his immortality completely under his mother’s thumb and has possibly the worst case of mommy issues known to man. Frankly, I think the total control thing is overcompensation for always being stuck as the child, or at the very least never an equal, in his oldest and most important relationship.

That is to say, for all his bluster, I think he would immediately fall to pieces if Alina patted him on the head and called him a good boy. Which itself isn’t the same as having a desire for an equal relationship, as opposed to desiring (again in like a repressed and probably repulsed way!) the same strict power dynamic to simply be reversed.
