Another of the auricula primroses I started from seed in 2020 has graced me with its blooms. I love them.

April-sown amorphophallus seedling update: repotted the most crowded ones. The largest corm is about an inch across, belonging to one of the A. borneensis seedlings. I did not get a picture of the 5-way species hybrids, but they're younger and all around smaller, with two individuals likely dwarfed due to competition for resources and space. They will hopefully catch up now that they've been separated. None of these species have an obligate dormancy, though they may take a short rest after disturbance.

Highlights from the Summer Garden & a Big-Time Surprise Visitor
A visit from the deer we call Juna in June.
Before summer ends officially on September 23rd, I didn’t want the season to go by without a garden update on how the seedlings fared once they left the greenhouse in spring. Given the late date, this is sort of like a summer wrap-up post told mostly in images – a view of our New England garden from June to mid-September. Don’t miss the real garden…

Mimosa Pudica - Sensitive/Shame/Zombie Plant
Obviously, grown from seed. Most already have the first set of true leaves! Also, I kept reading that the seedling doesn't react to touch but, mine did before they got their first set of true leaves.

Tuberous aroids from seed: an update. Top picture shows the largest first leaf of any of the seedlings so far. It's the leftmost plant in the second picture. The tallest leaf here is actually the second leaf of the oldest seedling in the pot. These are titanum/variablis/lambii crosses sown 24 April.
Pictures 3 and 4 are Amorphophallus borneensis, both working on their second leaves. These were also sown 24 April.
Next is a pot containing seeds of a complex hybrid cross involving decus-silvae, gigas, variablis, and titanum. These were sown 27 May.
Last is Pseudohydrosme gabunensis. This is a very rare rainforest species from Gabon with a spectacular flower. Happily, it's proven easy to propagate in cultivation (seeds only, though; it doesn't offset). I previously had a small plant of this and managed to kill it, probably from leaving it too dry during dormancy. It takes similar care to Anchomanes, but apparently less forgiving, at least vs A. abbreviatus and difformis, though they are considering lumping it into that genus. These seeds went in 24 April, and have been noticeably slower than the amorphophalluses. There are two others in the pot just barely breaching the surface.
These are all tropical species or hybrids of species without long, seasonal dormancies. They're going to stay inside for the near future, as it's so hot right now they'd probably be shocked into dropping their leaves, and they don't have a substantial tuber to fall back on. The goal is to keep them actively growing as long as possible to help them build one up. I really underestimated how fast the amorphophalluses would grow, and it's possible I might have to separate them in a few months. We'll reevaluate in early October.

Ann’s Garden
This year, we planted sweet peas.
I used canes, which I set up in a tepee design to make for easy picking, as Ann is not that tall.
If you look back through the archives you will find my earlier post on this little bit of planting.
I planted Amni in between to make for some summer colour when these die off.
I kept the seeds in a small circle away from the blue geranium to avoid a messy…
