5th Ave, New York City, 2017
Instagram has abandoned those of us who are passionate about photography and try to build a community around it, and turned itself into just another platform for short, addictive video clips. So, like many others, I'm looking into alternative spaces to share my work and engage with fellow artists and those interested in photography.
This Tumblr blog was originally started in 2014, but I decided to delete the old content and begin from scratch, starting with a series of my "classic" street shots from the last few years.
This photo from 2017 has become a bit of a personal icon. In the years since I took the photo on 5th Ave in Midtown, I have received countless requests and comments about it.
Generally, I avoid taking shots of people from behind because it’s difficult to create a connection with the subject if you can’t see their faces. In this instance, it worked for me for a number of reasons: The extravagant coat and her self-assured pose told me a story about this woman, while the yellow color of the coat and the New York cabs link the two main elements of the photo’s narrative together. What’s more, the tilt, street lines, and the buildings draw the viewer in and create an illusion of movement. Does it work for you, too? Curious to hear your thoughts - drop me some comments!
I hope you'll join the ride here on Tumblr, and I'm looking forward to connecting.
