on sunday, this song^ came onto my shuffle, completely out of the blue (came in between the trio and death, too, all the more jarring): like visiting an old friend after 10+ years, and you wonder how they’re doing, but you move on (especially when sandwiched between alex and chuck 🤪). then you’re faced with them firsthand.  i discovered skin yard and gruntruck when i was 18–i remember i used to listen to this song and crucifunkin’ in my auto-cad class whenever we did assignments: every so often, the line “get off your cross and dance!” will cross my mind when i’m drawing digitally. i asked some people on facebook about ben mcmillan because i want to know some things when i discover something new, given i grew up in california and nevada in the new millennium (the closest we have to grunge is stone temple pilots and hole, and i consider both more their own thing).  info about both is scarce, aside from skin yard being OGs in the scene—a recurring theme i’ve noticed with grunge bands outside the big ones: info is a crapshoot, ranging from a gold mine or finding out that their albums are out of print (like in the case of paw).  but i’ve always been curious about ben. i like the underrated and the underdogs, the “buried treasures” if you will, but i feel like he never had a chance to fully shine, especially when you find gruntruck were in the video for “alive” (yes, THAT alive), and they toured with alice in chains and pantera. a quick google search led me to jack endino’s old newsletter and the story does make you ponder the fragility of humanity: from what jack says, it sounds like he had factor v leiden thrombophilia, a hereditary disease that causes blood clots, and it nearly killed him c. 2000, and then he succumbed to complications from that plus diabetes and kidney failure in january 2008. another thing that’ll happen when i’m reading about musicians (cartoonists and authors, too), especially when they experienced a difficult period like metallica, anthrax, or testament, or they were a bright star burned out too soon like chuck or pete steele, is i’ll ask, “how the hell am i just now hearing about this?” and it makes me want to tell their story more. 🖤

I had the pleasure of seeing the late Mark Lanegan just once, with the Screaming Trees, at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC in 1992. Alice In Chains and Gruntruck were also on the bill. The lead singers of all 3 bands are now deceased.

OTD - 30 years ago, Alice In Chains, along with Screaming Trees and Gruntruck. This review is from Hit Parader magazine. I’ve shared another review that the Aquarian Weekly put out, but I got the impressions they weren’t big fans of heavy metal or Seattle’s Heavy Metal - seeing as all the bands are from here. • “More Grunge than a Septic Tank” 😝😜😂 • Totally forgot to share this post as I had it on my calendar, but it didn’t alarm. Therefore, thanks @scott.weiland.layne.staley for the reminder❤️ • ALL PICTURES BY TONY WOOLISCROFT —————————————————— #nehistripesseattle #LSMS #LSMSAiC #aliceinchains #laynestaley #chainer4life #mikestarrforever #1990s #seankinney #jerrycantrell #williamduvall #mikeinez #the1loveaic #grungeera (at Roseland Ballroom) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClW8LJgygLe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Off-Ramp/El Corazon/Funhouse, 109 Eastlake Ave E, Seattle.
A small place, it’s been a live music venue/bar since construction in 1910!  During the 30s it was apparently a ‘race’ or ‘negro’ bar, but I’ve never found any firm confirmation of that, just word of mouth. That does make sense tho, then as now, it’s not in one of the ‘trendier’ spots.
Site of Pearl Jam’s FIRST show, everybody who’s ever played Seattle, played here. Soundgarden. Alice in Chains. Mother Love Bone. Mudhoney. The Gits. Gruntruck. Nirvana. The U Men. Everybody.
Dimly lit (getting good pics is a miracle), sweaty, dark, loud, tiny dive bar. The best place ever for the authentic ‘rock and roll’ show.
I noticed a photo of Soundgarden making the rounds and realized I’ve never told y’all about the Off Ramp, so here we go.
Pic 1) Original Off Ramp signage, at the Mopop, Sept 2019. This overlooks Andy’s statue in the Home And Away exhibit.
Pic 2) Flyer from 1991. Alice in Chains? Mookie Blaylock? What weird names these Seattle bands have!
Pic 3) Original outdoor signage in place, probably 1991 or 92, pic from the Rocket.
Pic 4) Front of the building, April 2018.
Pic 5) That’s the entire stage. All of it. Yup. That’s all. Pure power is concentrated! July 2018, before a FlannelFest show.
Pic 6) Soundgarden plays, probably Sept 5, 1991. Note the chicken wire wrapped around the sprinkler pipe in the upper right hand of the photo - this was due entirely to an earlier incident (probably the October, 1987 show) where Mr. Chris ‘OSHA’s worst nightmare’ Cornell managed to tear down the piping by swinging on it. Photo credit to Charles Pederson.
Pic 7) Pearl Jam’s (then Mookie Blaylock) first show, Oct 22, 1990. Photo credit (and our unending gratitude) to Karen Mason-Blair.
Pic 8) Sometimes you just don’t know who might show up. The bassist in this pic, from April 2016, is a guy called Hiro... Yup, Hiro Yamamoto, helping out in the band of the son of one of his friends from Stereo Donkey. Nobody knew he was going to be there, it was an electrified moment! These kind of things happen in Seattle.
Pic 9) Shenannigans go on with Hell’s Belles, September 2019. I’m squatting directly to the left of the sound rack seen in the pic above with Soundgarden to get this shot. Like I said, tiny place.
When I heard the place was in danger of demolition, I admit I MAY have decided to preserve a little bit of it. Picture 10. I’m not confessing to anything here but this MAY be the pull from the ladies’ room stall, second from the end. It fell off into my pocket. What can I say?
The current situation has everything on hold, the Off Ramp/El Corazon may come back, and we hope it does. So much history, so many memories.
This is our history.

Brittle Bullet is a heavy, sludge song that’s basically our fuck you to the Trump administration, their supporters, and everything they stand for.
Broken mirror Cracked reflection You are my soul You're turning blue Under my skin Pins and needles A mote in my eye A splinter in yours
We're falling down There's no way out The lost and found We're falling down
Loaded questions Your aim is false Inebriated We all fall down Brittle bullet You shoot to kill Bite the bullet Turning to dust

☀️ A song stuck in your head when you woke up this morning – Opiate by Tool
⚠️ A song you love by a band you strongly dislike – I can`t think of something rn, I don`t think I have one
🙄 A song you dislike by a band you love anything on Lulu by Metallica, although I really enjoy all the ‘I AM THE TABLE’ memes
🐤 First song you recall from childhood where you could say who did it – I want to break free by Queen
😳 A song no one would believe you’d ever like -  those Romanian party songs about money, booze and prison lmao. I don`t listen to them a lot, but when they come on at parties I scream my lungs out to them
😲 A song you probably shouldn’t love but do – I don`t see anything wrong about loving a song
🥴 You always switch it off when THIS one comes on – that song by Halsey and The Chainsmokers, I think it`s called Closer? Yeah, I HATE that one
💜 A song that makes you smile -  Stargazer by Mother Love Bone
💔 A song that makes you cry -  Nutshell by Alice in Chains and Snuff by Slipknot
🔥 A song that gets you motivated – whenever I hear All out life by Slipknot I feel the urge to work out

I do whatever I need to in order to have all of the facts and not partial facts - but 100% genuine true to life FACTS! Therefore, I’m always happy to share new to others articles on our grunge era history: especially when the story is written by one of the most -underrated bands in Seattle’s music history. The band is none other than Gruntruck and the piece was written by their original manager - you know that “Easy-Street-Guy” Matt Vaughn. • Tonight I’m sharing the link, but I’ll share snippets of the article tomorrow. •https://www.revolutioncomeandgone.com/articles/19/gruntruck-most-underrated-Seattle-grunge-band.php • • 📸 Alison Braun • • —————————————————— #nehistripesseattle #gruntruck #benmcmillan #tommyniemeyer #normanscott #timpaul #alexsibbald #joshsinder #insideyours #push #foundrecordings #jackendino #mattvaughn #easystreetguy (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeUoAdppS_u/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"rb and tag with your top 5 most listened bands from high school, and don’t fake like it’s something cooler than it is...” said a tweet screencap post i’ve seen on here with a kinda transphobic handle so i’m not rbing that, but we all like to talk about ourselves, don’t we? so here’s mine. yeah i was a crappy posing “too cool for rap” white boy type in the early 90s.
soundgarden, alice in chains, ministry, nirvana, metallica.
some other contenders (bc i don’t have hard numbers): dead milkmen, pantera, sepultura, metallica, dead kennedys, ac/dc.
i’m probably forgetting something.  stuff i liked but didn’t hear often enough to make the list, including some better things, some things i got more into later, and and a few more embarrassing ones: guns n roses, mother love bone, queensryche, corrosion of conformity, babes in toyland, queen, they might be giants, red hot chili peppers, jane’s addiction, gruntruck, tool, black sabbath, pearl jam, temple of the dog, stone temple pilots, the aquabats, the vandals, pain, heart, aerosmith, megadeth, bjork... forgetting some, i’m sure of it.
