Do you have any tips for getting into dog sports? I've got an 8-month-old dalmatian/gsd/pit mix (my absolute best friend and also the bane of my existence, teenagers are a menace lol) who's crazy smart and athletic. The stuff you do with your pups looks awesome and I think we'd both really enjoy it! I'm just not sure where to start to look for clubs/events/etc. Any advice is appreciated!

Dog sports are one of those things where you either just happen to accidentally fall into it or you fight tooth and nail to find a place.

Some of the best ways to find places are to reach out to trainers/competitors in your area or close to you (FB and instagram are the easiest for this imo - if you have found any!). The rest depends on the sports you want to do and where you're located. A good way to try and find more sports would be to see if there are any in your area: google your city + "dog training club" or the sport you're looking for. See if any places offer classes (classes are a GREAT way to get started and test the waters!). Or look for events in your area and go watch! I wouldn't recommend trying to volunteer my first time watching an event, but it's a great place to get started and look for people who might know more people in your area that could help you. Most people are nice and like helping newbies out, but there are always some bad eggs in the pot!

Unfortuently, I'm not super great at finding non-American events, so I apologize if you aren't in the US! But if you are, there are a couple websites that you can check out. For AKC sanctioned events (FastCAT/AKC agility/Rally-O/Confo/etc), AKC has an event calendar.

For things like disc, you can check out UpDog's event page, Skyhoundz event page, USDDN (international), UFO (international), Quadruped, or AWI.

Agility has a couple besides AKC: UKI, CPE, NADAC, and USDAA.

Dock has a few with the main one being NADD and Ultimate Air Dogs.

For flyball, UFLI has a tournament list page. NAFA also does tournaments but I only do UFLI and NAFA's website looks like hasn't been updated since, like, the 90s.

There are other sports, like bitesports (PSA/IGP/Mondio/French Ring) or racing (AOK9, etc) but I know nothing about the racing world and bitesports are one of those sports (much like Flyball tbh) where you'd need to reach out to a club first because a club will make or break a dog.

I got into agility back in like, 2019 or something because I took classes from a local facility and went to some AKC events and asked around. I got into PSA because I googled "bitesports [city]" and found the closest club was an hour a half, so I emailed them. And then made that drive every weekend for 10 or so months haha (I put so many miles on my car). Moved to Wisconsin and reached out to a disc club local to me asking for a private lesson in disc on Facebook, ended up accidentally getting invited to play Toss & Fetch and my disc obsession spiraled from there. Ended up getting into flyball because I made friends with a lot of flyball people at disc. Everything else I've tried (like barn hunt/herding/etc) was a combination of looking on the AKC event page and going "I can do that", a friend going "you can do this, come to X event", or me frantically googling locations or sports or classes or private lessons.

When I first started out, I struggled a LOT. In Texas, there were quite a few places and clubs around me, but I only had about three months of that before I moved to Arkansas, which was a dog sport dead zone. I didn't have the connections or knowledge to even know where to look to get access to those places. It took me months to find the one single place where I could rent an agility field. I spent most of my time throwing a frisbee in a park not even knowing that disc was a dog sport I could compete in. Luckily, where I am now is pretty dominated by the sports I love and I've made a lot of really amazing connections which helps with knowing the who's/what's/how's of everything!

Ah! Thank you for posting it despite the spoilers.

I'd like to add what I meant by "the player wanting to spend more time" in regards to getting that optional line after her HA gsd. This is is reference to her resolution line of it feeling real when it's not, just an imagination. I believe this is the accumulation of that because afterwards this line, you see her happy and YOU a player who LOVES HER AS A CHARACTER, thinks cloud ("you") will reciprocate her feelings. It's a bait for YOU, only to be let down with a non optional "you're weird" from cloud. As a fan of hers , that MUST STING very much to see her face after being happy. The whole creepy event emphasizes this portion anyway, but getting tifa's HA gsd will make the most sense, that's coherent to the canon story. The one where he's more nonchalant, not upbeat, just saying nakama. Tbh i don't recall the framing, but I remember we only hear him out of frame. Not see him say it. So it could be the player as well. Maybe. Either way the damming part is what comes after, not the Nakama one. They DO NOT BELONG NOR FIT TOGETHER. w/ or w/o Zack and Tifa existing, nope, the whole creepy date shows that. So drop the "what ifs" already. They have like 666 dates the whole game.. and yet cloud still says when it's her HA gsd "we'll create more memories" as if those 666 "dates" weren't enough (well because she was trying to get into his pants, they were not standing on the same page for the entirety of the game!). So this might just be cloud desperately trying to create a genuine memory of friendship for heck's sake. YET she confesses as if she's never learned and that's why he called her weird. It's like when you're with your buddy and you say "hey man, let's do this again, I never had this much fun in a long time" and then they suddenly out of nowhere told you "hey, you know what I like you ... Etc". NO WONDER CLOUD THINKS IT'S WEIRD! aerith, get on with the memo already here! This is friendly outing nothing more! But this is the most positive outcome for the scene. In tifa's HA gsd, it's all very stern and serious. Still uncomfortable till the end.

So what exactly do they have left than just their bonds of Zack and saving the world? Nothing much. Aerith is here to support cloud even till AC just like Zack, but it's her way to thank him for reminding her of what's important to her the most, Zack (LSW).

+ hehe remember that nomura branching paths statement? That's where I remember the "make more memories" , "if you want to spend more time with her". You can as a player, but you can't have control over him. And most especially his romantic feelings. This is literally the most brutal amplification of the whole "keep hoping" concept. Choose something, yet it all ends up not to your liking anyway. Because Cloud himself doesn't think of her that way, not even close, not even an option, NOPE.

This is kind of random but I trust your opinion and knowledge on things like dog breeds - I'm sort of obsessed with Borzoi and have been for years now. Can't have one atm cause I have cats, and no yard, but in the future its the breed I lean toward the most. Do they have any breeding inflicted issues like the shquashed faced breeds or hip-issues of the GSD? I never really trust breed-focused pages to tell me stuff like that, since they're by people who are really INTO the breed - ya know?

dolichocephalic (long muzzled, opposite of brachycephalic) dogs do not really have any welfare issues associated with the long muzzle. the muzzle length problems arise when you squash the soft tissue inside a skull that is too small. that being said it shouldn't be a license to see how long you can physically breed a muzzle onto a dog, everything is good in moderation.

Eris the borzoi who's popular in memes has a ridiculously long snout to the point that she's got a pretty goofy looking overbite

i mean this in no offense to Eris i'm obsessed with her, but i would really dissuade anyone from breeding a dog if it's got that degree of malocclusion, this isn't the look we should be striving for (which is difficult when some breed standards basically DEMAND an uneven bite ie. english bulldogs)

part of me is worried that the popularity of snoot memes may make people try to breed for it even more, the current AKC borzoi standard clearly asks for an even or scissor bite, however i think adding a clause that penalizes overshot bites wouldn't hurt and might be a good preventative measure.

A quick look around doesn't show any serious health problems unique to borzoi that aren't also found in other similar size breeds. many websites stress the danger of bloat being higher for borzoi because it's more prevalent in dogs with a very deep chest, and the borzoi club of canada says that they may be sensitive to certain anesthetics. the american borzoi club also mentions a higher risk of an enzyme disorder called methemoglobin reductase deficiency?

all in all there seems to be nothing serious in borzois, and i think sighthounds on average have a cleaner bill of population health than other dog groups.

If you don't trust breeders or club resources it can be insightful to lurk on breed-specific facebook groups or forums especially local or health oriented ones. don't go there for any medical advice, but you can see which kind of health issues people are posting about and with what frequency, and potentially even which breeders the sick dogs are coming from. I was invited to join a group about saint bernards in the UK, it's basically a buyer beware watchdog group of concerned owners with sick bernards tracking sires and bloodlines that produce unhealthy dogs. of course those groups are very susceptible to infighting and personal vendettas or smear campaigns but it can offer an insight

Do you have an opinion on whether or not silver labrador retrievers are actually purebred labs? I know they’re not allowed to be show dogs due to their color, but some of the things I’ve read about the controversy of silver labs, particularly on the labrador retriever club’s website, sound really aggressive (and tbh rude) in their opinion that silver labs aren’t real labs.

Purebred? Probably not.

So my problem is twofold. The first is that of all the off colors, dilute is not one that has historically existed within the breed once true to type. This means unless a random mutation happened- which CAN happen (see albino dobes and panda GSDs)- it's not possible for purebred labs to be or carry dilute.

The other problem I have is that once you breed back to type for three or more generations, most dog breed genetics tests will test that dog as purebred. We see this happening in other impossible-to-be-pure colors, such as merle poodles and bulldogs. So pointing to an embark or other test that says purebred is less "proof" at this point because most of these dogs are so far from what would have been the original cross that they will test as functionally purebred even if they are not technically by dog breed standards.

This is the lab club's page on silver labs and does not seem rude or aggressive to me? They are of the opinion that these are mixed breed dogs due to the same thing I just said- historically labs have never been dilute once they were officially labs. As a result, it's genuinely not possible outside of random mutation or cross breeding to have dilute in the breed. This means that cross breeding would have to happen as the most likely source, and also that is easily explained when examining the origins of the silver lab.

This is actually pretty verbatim for the merle chihuahua, which is thought to have come from mixing with merle-possible breeds relatively recently or, at the very least, well after the breed was established as purebred. The major difference is that the members of the chihuahua club held a vote on whether to accept merle chihuahuas as purebred and the answer was "no good dog is a bad color", so they were allowed within breed standard. Noteably, chihuahuas are capable of producing all colors, with no restrictions outside of ensuring good pigment, compared to labs which are possible in more than just red, chocolate, and black but are restricted to just those three.

A Guide to Abbreviations and Terminology on Chicken Smoothie

Ah, yes! CS abbreviations. There are so many, lol, especially trading lingo. Let's see...

Pets' Growth Stages

OK, to start off there are a handful of easy abbreviations that refer to pets' growth stages:

PPS / EPPS / and kinda, sorta GUPPS

PPS stands for Peter Pan Syndrome and refers to a pet that will never grow to an adult stage. It's usually an "outcome" in a litter that is a little special like that c: Most (but not all) PPS pets will have that abbreviation on the pet image, and the pet info page will say: "PPS This pet has "PPS". What's that? Here's a PPS pet from February:

EPPS is a term that means "early" or "extreme" PPS and is used to refer to PPS pets that never grew from their newborn/first stage. Here's an EPPS pet from February:

Finally, GUPPS stands for "grown up" PPS. This one's a bit weirder because it refers almost exclusively to pets that are released during the advent calendar, when artists of a PPS pet released earlier in the year choose to create an adult version of it. For example, this puppy was originally released in Oct. 2023, then the artist made a "grown up" version for the Advent Calendar in December. The grown up version is a GUPPS:

Trading

The shorthand "WL" stands for "Wish List." The acronym "FTT" stands for Fair-Trade Thread, which is a very popular and useful thread on the forum where you can post a link to a trade you sent or received, and other users will give their opinion on whether it seems fair or not. Some users refer to duplicate pets of the same outcome as "dupes."

Trading Status There are also some shorthand terms users will write into their pet names or pet group names that give you an idea of their trading status, like:

HTTF - "hard to trade for"

VHTTF - "very hard to trade for"

NFT - "not for trade"

UFT - "up for trade"

UFA - "up for auction," or sometimes, in the free adoptions forum board "up for adoption"

Pets' Rarities There are a handful of very easy-to-learn abbreviations that refer to pets' rarities:

OMGSC - OMG So Common

EC/XC - Extremely Common

VC - Very Common

C - Common

UC - Uncommon

VUC - Very Uncommon

EU/EUC/XUC - Extremely Uncommon

R - Rare

VR- Very Rare

ER - Extremely Rare

OMGSR - OMG So Rare

High Value Trades This is where things start to get complex. I'll explain some abbreviations that are common when trading high value pets, but if you start getting confused about what even is happening at this stage, don't stress about it: we can go over how high value trades work and whatnot in the future, if you like c:

High Value Pets Usually, the user base will agree on names for certain pet litters and outcomes to make trading and talking about pets easier. So if someone says "White February," I know they're talking about this white wolf that was originally released in 2009.There are certain high-value pets that come up so often in discussion that users have shorthanded their names into acronyms. Here are some popular examples I can think of:

BA - Black advent

BMD - Bernese mountain dog

TWA - Timberwolf advent

RBM - Rainbow mane

GWJ - Growing white July

BEG - Black-eyed galaxy

CEG - Clear-eyed galaxy

GSD - German Shepherd Dog

WWA - Winged wood angel

(Tangent: if you know the year and month a pet was released but not their (un)official name, there's a really cool archive run by CS users called Chicken Smoothie Transpets that basically functions like the archive, but it lists the widely agreed-upon names of relevant pets, including the acronyms!).

High Value Worth Shorthands Because trading high-value pets on CS can be a bit complex (since we don't know exactly how much rarer certain pets are compared to others; we only know estimates according to their rarity labels), there have been user researched and made guides to trading OMGSR and ER pets taking into account their demand and estimating how many are found up for trade. The current such guide that seems to be popular right now is Horror's [🐝] Guide to Trading Every Pet on CS. In order to trade certain high-value pets for others at the more or less agreed upon values, most of the userbase use certain labels to describe a pet's worth:

OR - Stands for Old Rares and refers to rare pets from 2010-2011

MA - Is equal in worth to 10 ORs. It stands for "Mid Advent," mostly as a leftover term from an older guide. It's not really important to know exactly why this term is used, and I feel like I am already giving you too much info, so maybe I can tell you the story another time XD. MAs are used to measure the more valuable pets on the site.

Non - Is equal in worth to 10 MAs (or 100 ORs). The term comes from the unofficial names of some of the earliest dogs to be released on CS.

True Date, Un-Released and Re-Released Pets Lore - December 18th is a really exciting day for the whole CS userbase. It is the day. The only day when all users have a chance to adopt pets that were released on previous years and are no longer available though the Adopt page. It is the only day you can adopt a very rare or more valuable pet reliably on the site—I hope you're around for that!

RR - Pets from previous years that are adopted on Dec. 18th are called Re-released pets, or RRs.

TD - In contrast, pets that were adopted in the month and year when they were originally released are called True Date pets, or TDs.

UR - Finally, Un-released pets, or URs are also adopted only on December 18th, but unlike every other pet given out on that day, UR pets have never been released normally before. They are always extremely rare and valuable. You can find the UR pets released each year under the "Special Releases" tab of the archive.

COPPA Sorry for the info-dump. Take a breath, we're back in easy territory c: You may see users mention COPPA users in their tarde rules and such. The acronym stands for "Children's Online Privacy Protection Act." To comply with this act, CS allows kids under 13 years old in the US to make an account and collect pets, but not to participate in the forums or write trade messages.

@doomspaniels commented that the American Cocker Spaniel's page had a split range for well-bred and puppy-mill dogs, and expressed some woe at the idea that Tortora had reserved this dubious distinction for them. As we can see, though, that is not the case--GSDs, then the 3rd most popular breed in the AKC, were also recipients of this, ah, 'special' award.

I find the sheer size of the range on the GSD fascinating here because you can really see the instability and anxiety that breeding without selecting for temperament could and can create.

Also, Sammy's owner's wife was totally right to demand that Sammy drop that shit now, although I'm a bit more skeptical of her choice in grooms...

NO YEAH FOR SURE like i get breed labeling can be tough esp in cases like megamutts where it’s got EVERYTHING so it’s hard to pick what’s most represented. Yeah in the cases I was familiar with they WERE mixes but it was generally a lot of stuff to condense into a summary page (I know adoption at my local shelters is a more involved process, like dog adoptions are never same-day bc they do interaction/meeting tests to see how they and the dog react to each other and if they’re a good fit, so maybe that’s kinda coloring my opinion of this lol)

But yeah in the case of lying about a pit being a mix, No Way. I was just thinking more in the case of labeling actual mixes as a nonspecific mix while still being transparent when asked if that makes sense. (SOZ if my words are weird rn the heat’s crazy)

that makes sense! I know with MANY dogs it's impossible to know what they're mixed with when you're just looking at the dog. OTOH there are just so many pits, pyrs, and GSDs in (texas) shelters and they're fairly identifiable so it doesn't make sense to, say, label a dog that is obviously a great pyrenees as a lab mix, you feel?

Here is Horseradish, the beastformer I made based on Gerta. She's mostly chill and friendly but also a coward afraid of her own shadow, LOL.

Her name is Horseradish because my grandma, mom, and I call Gertie "Horseradish sauce" with an exaggerated and terrible Brooklyn accent when she's in silly mode.

I pulled the colors from a horseradish plant, Gerta's favorite toy, and her collar.

Anyways I made a sparkledog OC. That is the takeaway from this post.

2. what's a fic that took you to an emotional/dark/hard place?

Oh man. Def. Fourtuna Primigenia bc of...fucking everything, but also Blackbird bc that forced me to come to terms with my crippling fear of rejection and abandonment, and believing the only reason anyone would ever want to stay with me is if they couldn't leave (baby) or if they were also garbage and we could be garbage together.

getting words on the page w/o a chemical aid of some sort/tying paragraphs together.

12. What’s your perfect environment to create/write?

Late afternoon in midwinter after getting all my shit did for the day with/noise canceling headphones listening to synthwave or stoner rock and being slightly buzzed.

14. Do you compare yourself to other writers? In a positive or negative way?

Both. I'm extremely competitive and struggle really hard to accept a work as is without having some thought process like "how could I make this better?" or "what are they doing right that I'm not?" I'm really trying to work on just appreciating something for what it is and not conceptualize it's logical extreme like those dog breeders that make the fucked up GSD's with the itty bitty hind leggies

19. If you could write an ideal fic, what would it include?

the stupidest, cheesiest, dumbest power/romance fantasies and scenario's cooked up by my angsty teenage ass but made palatable to the masses without compromising it's character. I'm talking like Calvin and Hobbes trex in f-16's kinda stupid shit but made believable.

Gonna be a really hot take, but I don’t think that Blue Bay Shepherds are inherently unstable assholes that want to rip everyone’s face off like Tumblr claims they are.

They’re low to mid-content wolf dogs, which leads to its own share of challenges, and admittedly have rough puppy years (but so do lots of other dogs). But otherwise? They’re functional companions once you get them through the teenage punk years. I’ve met a few of them at various dog events, one being in Georgia. The Blue Bay in question was a nice, functional dog who sat calmly beside her owner and was not acting like an asshole (unlike the Border Collie right beside her. Said BC seemed to be intent on starting a fight, by the way). From what I’ve read, being a member of the FaceBook page, this is kinda standard behavior.

Are they perfect? No. I don’t like the long hair and the shedding (same reason I don’t like long haired GSDs). Could they be improved? Probably, but most dog breeds could be improved. Are they inherently evil assholes owned by worse people than doodle owners/people who were lied to? No. Would I own one? I’d love to, but I won’t for the same reason I won’t own a Presa Canario or a Tosa Ken - I just don’t have the time to dedicate to their needs.

But the Blue Bays I have met were nice, stable dogs. They weren’t evil. They weren’t bad. The owners I’ve seen, from my close to a year of lurking, seem to be very informed about the needs of their dogs. For the most part, Blue Bays also seem to be breeding true. I think the most common complaint against Blue Bays has been a prey drive (the owners in question are usually told they need to fence their yard) or the dog decides it’s going to be picky for a week or two. They seem like good dogs and I’d like to see what the future holds for them.

I don’t get the hate, other than people being against what might become the Vlcak 2.0 and hate against companion dogs in general.
