But actually, how large is Tellius?
Figuring out the distances in fantasy worlds is something I dabble with on occasion, and since I’m writing a lot more for the Tellius games that I originally intended to, figuring out the distances was required to figure out how long certain missions took so I could figure out times and such.
For this purpose, I obtained an HD capture of the map presented in Chapter 10, Prisoner Rescue, when they’re tracing the path the group will have to take from Gallia to Begnion. The below map is the clean version without the path or country names, and just the countries the mercenaries travel through highlighted. More maps, information and spoilers will be after the cut.
It’s very long and barely edited. You have been forewarned.
Tumblr media
Figuring out the distance will require us to find a scenario that fits all of the below requirements:
We know exactly where on the map they were traveling
We know exactly where on the map they were coming from
We know exactly how long it took them to travel the distance
If it is a long path, we know exactly the route they took
We often know when and where the mercenaries are going on their travels. Chapter 10 looked to be promising because they give us this, with their route drawn out already, but we never learn how long it took to cross that distance, and even assuming the castle they pass in the northwest of Crimea is the place where Chapter 10, Prisoner Release, takes place we have no idea how long it takes them to get from the castle to the port. Bummer.
Tumblr media
Traveling time is rarely mentioned in the games, but Path of Radiance is going to be my best shot because in Chapter 23, The Great Bridge, Ike says that when they left Crimea it was the beginning of spring, and Elincia says it’s been about a year since they departed. Time is never brought up so much in Radiant Dawn.
“Big? Hmm... Yeah, I guess you're right. When we left Crimea, it was spring... The snows were melting, the days were getting longer, and the weather was mild.”
“It's been almost a year since we departed. Only a year, but the distance we've traveled to get here has been long and hard.”
So we know, at least, so far that it takes them about one year to get from Port Toha to Riven/Oribes Bridge (Please do not ask why the same bridge has two different names in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. I understand it was probably a translation error they were correcting, but sometimes they double down on their changes, and other times they backtrack. It’s very confusing. Thank you.)
That is useful to know, we’ll set that information to simmer on the back burner for now, because it’s not going to help us get a size of the continent.
Obviously, in Chapter 12, A Strange Land, we get how long they’ll be traveling by boat.
“Having narrowly escaped Daein's grasp the Greil Mercenaries are pleased to feel the ocean beneath their feet as they set sail. According to Captain Nasir, the voyage to Begnion will take roughly two months.”
But boat speed is not walking speed. amielleon, whose translations I rely on a lot, also listed their issues with nailing down the size of Tellius by boat speed, so I am not touching the boat speed to try and determine the size of Tellius. amielleon eventually solved for the answer by assuming the final chapters of Part 2 of Radiant Dawn occur within a few days of one another. I could have just accepted their answer, but I am nothing if not extra so here I am, doing my own homework, putting my AP Calculus lessons to good use, finally. Good math should arrive at the same solution, anyway, so amielleon’s work can be another check for my own.
In chapter 9, Gallia, Lethe says that the distance they need to cross could be crossed by a laguz in 3 days. The localized script altered it slightly.
Original localization: “Beorc are such a weak species. A distance like this is nothing. Any laguz worth his claws could cross it in a single bound.”
Original Japanese: …ベオクというのは 軟弱な生き物だ。この程度の距離、我らだけなら3日もあれば 十分だというのに。(Roughly, per Google Translate: Beorc are weak creatures. At this distance, three days would be enough for us alone.)
I am too dyslexic to learn kanji, so reading Japanese is beyond me. Thus, I must rely on Google to translate Japanese scripts for me. If you can read Japanese and want to provide a better translation, please feel free.
So now we know the traveling speed of laguz is fast enough to cross the distance between Gebal Castle and Zarzi, the capital of Gallia, within three days. Do they go through the mountains, or around? Since I cannot answer this question, I must move on. There must be something.
The most concrete information that I get to determine distance comes from, naturally enough everyone’s favorite pompous ass that manages all of the details, Soren. In Chapter 5, Roadside Battle, Soren states that it took him 3 days to get from Melior to the Mercenary Fort.
“Everything started three days ago. I needed to do some research, so I went to the archives of Melior's royal library.”
In this scene, he points out on the map both where the mercenary fort is, where Melior is, and how long it took him to run from Melior to the mercenary fort (More or less 3 days).
Tumblr media
Soren was traveling on his own to get out to the mercenary fort as fast as he could, and as Greil says, because of his efforts, the Greil Mercenaries are likely the first to hear about the war as far from the capital as they were. This is absolutely perfect. To determine the distance Soren ran, we’ll need to determine his speed first.
In medieval times, the average person could walk 10-20 miles (16.1-32.2 km) in a day, or more as needed, at a speed of about 3 miles per hour (4.8 km/h) for however many hours they travel a day.
Even back in medieval days, pilgrims would routinely travel 10 to 20 miles in a given day. If there was a pressing need, they could go even further, if there was a well maintained road to travel on.
Given the need and that Soren is used to walking as a primary means of transportation, I’ll say Soren was probably going about 20-25 miles (32.2-40.2 km) in a day to get back to the fort as quickly as he could. We also know the attack occurred that first day, but we don’t know when Soren was able to escape Melior. We know he says he saw the response from King Ramon, but he doesn’t know how the fight ended, so he likely left as quickly as he could. I’ll say he probably left in the middle of the day and covered about 10-15 miles (16.1-24.1 km) the first day, 20-25 miles (32.2-40.2 km) the second day, and arrived at the mercenary fort on the third day, after traveling another 10-15 (16.1-24.1 km) miles.
Low end of the spectrum, the mercenary fort is 40 miles (60.4 km) from Melior. High end of the spectrum is 55 miles (88.5 km). If we were to assume he moved 25 miles (40.2 km) per three days he traveled a total distance of 75 miles (120.7 km).
Then I remembered that Nintendo and Intelligent Systems count days differently than I would. If you’ve played any Nintendo mobile app game, especially Fire Emblem Heroes, when they say 3 days are remaining in an event, they mean three days after today (So when you have 1 day left, there’s actually today and tomorrow). So maybe when he was stating “everything started three days ago,” he actually meant “everything started three days ago, not including today.” Maybe that’s how they count time in Tellius, today isn’t included in the counts.
Which changes things to two days of 10-15 miles (16.1-24.1 km), and two days of 20-25 miles (32.2-40.2 km). Low end is 60 miles (96.7 km), high end is 80 miles (128.8 km). Absolute max distance at 25 miles (40.2 km) over four days is 100 miles (160.9 km).
Now to put that on a map. The markings are in place where Soren pointed out the mercenary fort and Melior in Chapter 5. Melior is the castle on the left, the mercenary fort is the red dot on the left, the blue line shows his path. The path curves a little to account for roads, as they are rarely straight lines. Do I know where the roads are? Absolutely not. Am I trying to be perfectly precise? Absolutely not. That isn’t physically possible. I’m just making my best guess. Could you argue Soren could have cut a straight line? Probably, aside from having to take a bridge at some point to cross the river, Soren is shown to have an excellent sense of direction and could have taken a straight path across the surface as long as the terrain was travelable, however, having to pick his way through fields or forests would slow him down from the speed I assigned him before.
Now to put that to scale, I decided to pixel measure the distance. How did I do that? I took a 1 pixel brush in Photoshop, traced the path in the 1 pixel brush on a separate layer and then used the histogram tool to tell me how many pixels existed in the new layer.
Tumblr media
The histogram tool spat out a total of 76 pixels.
So, a pixel could either be 0.526 miles (0.847 km), 0.724 miles (1.165 km), or 1 mile (1.609 km), depending on how far Soren traveled in those three days.
Or, again, using the other method of counting time, it could be 0.789 miles (1.270 km), 1.053 miles (1.695 km), or 1.316 miles (2.118 km).
Now then, for a sense of scale, I measured a wide point across the map to be 357 pixels. At our earlier scale, that could be either 188 miles (302.6 km), 259 miles (416.8 km), or 357 miles ( 574.5 km). The second set of proposed distances is 282 miles (453.8 km), 376 miles (605.1 km), 470 miles (756.4 km). Below, I have put some world geography to the map for a sense of scale. I realize most of the people reading this are probably going to be from North America like myself, but I threw in places from Europe and Japan for comparison. I don’t think my fellow Americans often realize how small Europe feels compared to U.S. states/Canadian Provinces, and for the setting of these games, Europe and Japan are going to be more accurate scale comparisons as that is what the devs would have had in mind.
In the below images, the first set of scales is on top, largest on the left, smallest on the right. The second set of scales is on the bottom, largest on the left, smallest on the right. The red line is the width I measured straight across, and as you can see, it is not the widest point on Tellius, but I digress. I’ll produce a cleaner image when I’m happy with the scale.
Tumblr media
Now, this is a shock to me, who has always compared Tellius to Australia since I first started playing the games, but strictly speaking in terms of the story’s logic, it makes a lot of sense.
That said, I provided 6 different ranges, and perhaps you want a final answer. I’m certainly not satisfied with 6 different scales, and I need a precise answer for my purposes. The time that has passed during the game is going to help narrow it down a lot. To compare distances to time, we’re going to need to know the speed the mercenaries travel at. I’m just plugging things into Excel formulas to get what I want at this point so these are the travel speeds I’m assuming:
Soren travels on his own at 25 miles (40.2 km) per day, but for the smaller scales it was actually 20, but I’m applying 25 across the board for simplicity’s sake.
The mercenary company travels together at 20 miles (32.2 km) per day to account for the larger group, the slower members, the children, and Princess Elincia, who is certainly not going to go as fast as a mercenary can on their own. Could it be slower? Probably, but it’s just the number I chose.
When in Gallia, because of the adverse conditions (humidity and thick jungle), the beorc travel even slower, going 15 miles (24.1 km) per day. This leads to Lethe complaining about how slow they are and lets them take at least 5-11 days to cross the 124 pixels on their path from Gebal Castle to Zarzi. This also means that from the time it took for Elincia to get to Zarzi and Greil’s death, they were at Gebal castle for at least 7-11 days to allow Elincia to get to Zarzi and Caineghis to run from Zarzi to Gebal Castle and make it there the night Greil died, as Caineghis is definitely a laguz “worth his claws” to borrow localized Lethe’s turn of phrase, and as such, can cross the distance in 3 days with only laguz to accompany him (And then at least 6 days from Greil’s death to Daein’s attack on Gebal Castle allow Caineghis to go back to Zarzi and order Moredecai and Lethe to escort the bereaved mercenaries back to Zarzi. Also, Caineghis, can we talk for a sec? Why did you leave them there for 6 days when you knew Daein was hunting them? Please explain yourself beyond “plot made me do it”).
Nasir’s ship takes 60 days (roughly two months) to travel the 536 pixels his path is. This means it travels 8.93 pixels per day on average. This means his ship is going 4.7 - 11.8 miles (7.7 -19.0 km) per day. The larger the map, the faster his ships goes. But we can come to two conclusions: Nasir’s ship is only convenient because the mercenaries couldn’t travel over land due to Daein pursuit despite how slow the journey is; and Nasir is really bad at piloting a ship.
amielleon cites a source that no longer exists that states merchant trading boats can go an average of 120 miles (193.1 km) per day. I am taking that on faith to show how slow Nasir’s ship goes based on the scale of the world.
When they get the army, aside from the Palmeni Temple mission, they are slowed down to a 10 mile (16.1 km) per day march. Medieval armies were not fast, they often marched less than that per day, so the 10 mile (16.1 km) average pace is probably a little faster than average. However, as we learn in Radiant Dawn chapter 3-8, the Begnion Army can outpace a laguz army at frightening speeds, and so I’m fine going with that. It also means all the speeds are in multiples of 5 miles per hour, and that makes me happy.
So, now we can check the scales against how long it took them to leave Crimea and get to Riven/Oribes Bridge. In order to do that, we’ll need to determine where the mercenaries go throughout their travels.
There are several points where the mercenaries go somewhere only to return back to base immediately after. Return journeys are shown in purple, but for measuring distance, I only counted the original path out twice since the purple paths are a little more stylized for visibility. For fun, I wanted to show every path the mercenaries took since Daein attacked Melior. I then pixel measured every path that was taken.
Tumblr media
This assumes a few things:
I’m assuming that when they’re talking about leaving Crimea behind, they’re discussing the time since Port Toha, and not fleeing from the mercenary fort.
Where the battle against Daein on the road to Melior takes place in Chapter 5 where they find Elincia (about halfway was my guess).
Where the river is that the laguz slave traders are fought in Chapter 14 (I just picked the branching river paths to the east of Sienne).
Where in the Grann Desert the Laguz Emancipation Army is fought in Chapter 15, I put it just past the mountains, but it could have been further. Who knows?
I’m assuming that when they’re desperately searching for Reyson in the Serenes forest for a while, they’re not returning to Sienne each day that they don’t find him before going to the heart of the forest in Chapter 17 because they’re in a race against Duke Tanas.
I’m guessing the heart of Serenes is in the center of the forest and they’re tracking Reyson’s flight somehow, and not literally canvasing the entire forest (which has an area of approximately 3,194 pixels and as such, would take months to canvas).
Where Gritnea Tower is located, which is stated to be about a day’s journey from where they’re staging the battle in Melior, so I just put it slightly southwest of Melior.
After plugging in my speeds and distances, I get the following results:
3 days is 3 days scale set:
Small Scale: 1 pixel = 0.526 miles (0.847 km), 122 days
Medium Scale: 1 pixel = 0.724 miles (1.165 km), 146 days
Large Scale: 1 pixel = 1 mile (1.609 km), 177 days
3 days is 4 days scale set (???):
Small Scale: 1 pixel = 0.789 miles (1.270 km), 153 days
Medium Scale: 1 pixel = 1.053 miles (1.695 km), 184 days
Large Scale: 1 pixel = 1.316 miles (2.118 km), 215 days
So, what happened? None of those add up to around 365 days.
Well, a few things. My math only accounts for the time it took them to walk the paths I made up. We know there is probably considerable down time that occurs during and in between chapters, especially when they’re in Begnion.
In Chapter 14, Training, Mist says they’ve been doing nothing for five days.
“We've been here for five days already...And there's absolutely nothing to do!”
In Chapter 17, Day Breaks, Soren says they have spent two days searching for Reyson before going to the heart where the battles we play take place
“The last two days spent searching Serenes Forest for that heron have been frustrating and fruitless.”
The time frame above doesn’t account for the 5 days they were waiting in Sienne before being sent on a mission, it doesn’t account for the 2 days they were searching the forest during Chapter 17 before the four part battle map. That’s 7 days we need to add to each calculation right off the bat. That gets the largest scale, 1 pixel = 1.316 miles (2.118 km) to a total of 222 days. This doesn’t even yet account for any additional down time: days resting after a large fight, the untold days it took them to hand out supplies to the people of Talrega, if they had to wait for Reyson and Leanne to prepare to revive Serenes Forest, if they had to wait more time for Sanaki to marshall her army to lend to the Crimean Army after they returned from Serenes, days spent securing Nevassa, and so on. Now, 140 days is a lot to just wave away through all this, I admit.
So maybe my travel speeds were wrong. Maybe the army couldn’t march at 10 miles (16.1 km) per day through Daein in the winter, maybe invading Daein in the winter is really difficult for Begnion forces who may be more used to a more temperate climate. All the numbers I picked were somewhat arbitrary to begin with.
Or perhaps all of the scales are wrong to start with. We get a map of Tellius in Radiant Dawn that is of different proportions than the Path of Radiance Map I’ve been working with so far.
Tumblr media
Perhaps the Path of Radiance map was squished down for the aspect ratio of the GameCube, so the Radiant Dawn map has the true proportions of the world. Am I going back to square one? Absolutely.
After adjusting the height of the Path of Radiance Map to fit the ratio of the Radiant Dawn map, we get this image:
Tumblr media
On this new map, Soren’s path from Melior to the mercenary fort took 78 pixels, which makes sense as his path was mostly horizontal, and so the vertical stretch shouldn’t have changed it too much.
Also, perhaps Soren, being half black-dragon laguz, goes faster than 20-25 miles (32.2 40.2 km) per day on his own.
So I’m going to re-examine the scale. Obviously the largest scale from the “3 days is 4 days (???)” scale set is the only one that comes reasonably close, so I’m going to modify that one only. And that’s already at 100 miles (160.9 km) from Melior to the mercenary fort. I’m going to say his max pace as a Branded is more like 4.125 mph (6.6 km/h), over a 8 hour walking period instead of the 3.125 mph (5.0 km/h) we were using before. I picked this speed because he can't transform and he is not a hardy person by any means, and so I’m only comfortable giving him the speed of a professional courier on foot.
professional couriers could trek up to 31, or 38 miles a day by foot!
That gets us 33 miles (51.5 km) per day, right in the middle of the courier speed, but also on the lower end, which is fine. We’ll say he has to travel the full amount he can travel for the 4 days he’s traveling, giving us a total distance of 132 miles (206.0 km). This changes our scale to 1 pixel = 1.692 miles (2.723 km).
That makes the final size comparison maps look like this.
Tumblr media
I’m content with this size, and it’s almost the same as the final solution amielleon arrived at, mine is perhaps a little smaller. See? What did I say about good math before?
It’s a little hard to see the size comparison between amielleon’s work and my own because the maps I have uses Mercator projection and the map amielleon has uses an Albers Equals Area Conic Projection
Now, to figure out the rest of the speeds the group travels to double check the time spent on the campaign and see if we’re any closer to fitting within canon:
The mercenary group can travel 20 miles (32.2 km) per day on their own in favorable conditions.
When escorting non-combatants, the mercenary company travels 18 miles (30 km) per day.
When traveling through unfavorable conditions, the mercenary company travels 12 miles (19.3 km) per day.
When escorting non-combatants through unfavorable conditions, the mercenary company travels 9 miles (14.5 km) per day.
When travelling to Serenes, they go at 25 miles (40.2) a day via caravan to speed up the rescue mission, but the normal 18 miles (30 km) per day back
The Begnion Army can travel 8 miles (12.9 km) per day in favorable conditions as they aren’t using drugs to enhance performance like they do when chasing the laguz in Radiant Dawn (a gross exaggeration of an extended script fact, going by Google Translate.)
In the Extended Script of 3-7 Ulki says: 帝国軍は神官部隊を有効に利用し、休息の時間を最低限に抑えているようだ which Google rougly translates to: The Imperial Army makes effective use of priesthood troops, it seems that the rest time is kept to a minimum.
This seems to surprise everyone in Radiant Dawn, so I’m assuming they weren’t doing that in this campaign.
The Begnion Army can travel 5 miles (8.0 km) per day in unfavorable conditions.
The Crimean Royal Knights can march at 6 miles (9.7 km) per day in favorable terrain.
Nasir’s ship crosses the now 1,029 mile (1,656.0 km) path at a blistering 17.15 mile (27.6 km) a day pace. He is now a vastly more understandable choice to take, but he is still really bad at boats, or he’s making the boat trip take longer on purpose to earn the mercenaries’ trust and find out about the medallion.
From the time they take the boat in Toha and arrive at Riven/Oribes Bridge, they have now spent 295 days moving from place to place, and have had a known downtime of at least 7 days, bringing this journey to a minimum of 302 days. I feel very comfortable excusing away 63 days to additional downtime that is not spoken of in definite terms in the game, such as: preparing for or recovering from battles; the time it took for Sanaki to gather together the troops she was lending to the Crimean Army; time spent securing their hold on Nevassa; time spent scounting; and the fact that it’s been a little less than a year from when they leave Port Toha to when they arrive back in Crimea.
The total distance they travel from Soren’s flight from Melior in Chapter 5 to defeating Ashnard in Melior is 5,037 miles (8,106.3 km) over 407 days, with 19 days of downtime in Gallia (13 before Greil dies, 6 after he dies), at least 5 days of downtime in Sienne, and 2 days searching for Reyson in Serenes before finding Leanne, and probably a whole lot more time that passes off screen.
If you want to try and set your own scale, feel free. I have listed below all the different lengths of the various parts of their journey as shown in my maps.
Flight to fort, 78 pixels Roadside Battle, 39 pixels Flight to Gallian Border, 36 pixels Trip from border to Gebal Castle, 24 pixels Trip to Fort Tatana, 37 pixels Final leg of trip to Zarzi, 90 pixels Journey back to Gallian Border, 132 pixels Trip to Port Toha, 68 pixels Nasir’s Very Slow Boat Trip, 608 pixels Trip from Begnion port to Sienne, 88 pixels Mission out to stop Slave Traders, 53 pixels Mission out to Grann Desert, 84 pixels Mission out to the Tanas villa, 147 pixels Mission out to Serenes Forest, 236 pixels March up to Tor Garen, 204 pixels March up to Talrega, 68 pixels March up to Nevassa, 61 pixels Mission out to Palmeni Temple, 37 pixels March over to Riven/Oribes Bridge, 140 pixels March to Castle Delbray, 46 pixels March to Mountains, 34 pixels March to Fort Pinell, 38 pixels March to Castle Nados, 12 pixels March to Melior, 30 pixels Mission out to Gritnea Tower, 20 pixels

Some people are expecting commentary from me, but I’ve been super busy lately. When I’m like this, I like to only talk about things I haven’t seen other people saying.
So I liked Kuro Neko a lot. It was very solid imo and I appreciate the alternation between episodes where a ton of action happens (Ephemeral, Penalteam) vs episodes where the two dorks just kinda talk to each other and not much happens heroes-vs-villains-wise (Glaciator 2.0, Kuro Neko). Commentary speed run: Adrien pajamas hell yeah finally, wtf Nathalie out of bed? Good for her but ouch those braces. Rhythm (is that her real name?) was super cute and wholesome as a “villain”, and I love the senti. Lastly, Plagg is awesome at drawing?
But here’s what I wanted to talk the most about.
CT’s favorite thing: new heroes
The almost-last batch of my blorbos have arrived so clearly I stared at screenshots of all of them for 48 hours and noticed some stuff. I would like to point out that these 48 hours also let me go through what I call The Five Stages of New Hero Grief aka getting over the instant repulsion people feel upon seeing their designs for the first time and learning to love and accept them.
Tumblr media
Between his ram-like original concept and the antelope-like final Caprikid, I don’t think Nathaniel actually knows what a goat is? My manga rec for him is one of those baby picture books about different types of animals. Now that I’ve gotten used to him, I actually like his suit. It reminds me of Mitsuru Kirijo from Persona 3. I feel like I’d like him waaaay more if his hair was different, though. It throws me off that it’s so similar to its usual style, even if it’s a little different, so any sort of more noticeable change would’ve made him look more natural. Idk why his paintbrush would have golden metal if everything on him is silver, but oh well.
Sabrina looks just about how I expected her to. I totally called it that she would have a hat. I’ll talk about her design more when I get to that image of her standing upright ‘cause this angle sucks, but I think the marble-designed ball on her chest could be her tool. If her power has to do with tracking, maybe she’ll be useful in tracking down the original, non-clone Penalty who has the actual akumatized object on her.
Tumblr media
Minotaurox my beloved. Everyone’s saying that they see his suit as black, but I see it as navy blue? It’s a kinda desaturated color compared to most of the other suits, but he’s still all blue? (Trust me, I have perfect color vision). I like the way his mask is, it’s new and interesting. I also love the big cargo pockets. Practical. I think the puffy part around his shoulders is supposed to be like an ox yoke. His boots kinda confuse me ‘cause cloved hooves like that could never work irl but I guess it’s just part of the magic. I feel like his normal hair works well with his design because his suit is pretty reminiscent of Ivan’s usual clothes with the cargo pockets, boots, dark colors, and not a lot of details or flashiness. That’s why Nathaniel’s bothers me a little, since his clothes, on the other hand, looks so different from his usual self.
Marc looks fantastic. Glad to finally see an HD image because now we can see the gold trim which is awesome. I like his little scarf, I love his tail, and somewhat unpopular opinion but I love his hair. I’m mixed on the shoes. They make sense, and I always prefer designs being heavily influenced by the animal traits over “this looks good”, so I can’t complain, but how is he gonna kick a soccer ball without wrecking it? I guess it’s a magic ball idk. Super important detail that I haven’t seen anyone talk about: is it just me, or does he have earrings in his left (our right) ear? If you zoom in, it looks like he does. Bunnyx twins? In the picture below, I noticed that his feathers aren’t flat to his chest like I previously thought.
Tumblr media
There are four heroes whose animals have hooves, yet zero of them have hoof prints on the bottom of their shoes. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.
What I want everyone to look at is the glimpse we have of Ivan’s back. I think his tool’s on there, but what is it? It’s pretty big. Big hammer? Musical instrument? Idk
One thing I do appreciate is that they didn’t go pussy mode with the horns. If the character designers were cowards, they could’ve easily given us Minotaurox and Caprikid with tiny stubs, but they did not, and for that I am grateful.
Tumblr media
First glimpse of Marc’s tool. They changed it from a fountain pen type thing to a quill, but they way he’s holding it makes it look kinda like a combat knife lol. Like in Hack-San, when most of the kids got brainwashed by Robustus, Marc is one again standing in the middle and a bit in front of all the other side characters, and he’s the one speaking for them. This is some consistent new development since it happened twice, and it makes me wonder how important he’s going to become because he was so irrelevant in previous seasons, but he’s changed a lot in s4. I think he’s probably the “beloved character with a big role coming up, like more than this character has ever spoken before” that Ezra Weisz talked about once in a tik tok.
Sabrina looks way cuter in this image than in the trailer imo. Her suit is similar to her normal clothes in that 70s-like aesthetic. Another important thing that nobody’s talking about: is it just me or does she have glasses in this shot? Zoom in on her mask. It looks like she has frameless oval glasses, but I can’t tell if they’re there or not in the trailer shot. If I’m seeing what I think I’m seeing, I like them a lot. They’re cute, and it’s nice to see a girl with glasses not lose them for “aesthetic reasons”. The white part on her chest/belly is a heart aww. Her boots look like those tall schoolgirl type socks, and that plus the shorts, beret, and glasses has a huge vintage prep vibe.
I bet Ladybug is drawing out a game plan in this scene, but everyone’s expressions are so funny. Every single character could be a different reaction meme.
Last thing: I’m trying to imagine how Ladybug is going to give out all of these miraculous. We know the class starts all together, so it’d be tough to separate them all to individually give them miraculous in different locations later. On top of that, there are four more heroes in three other locations, and they’re probably all supposed to be in class right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t explain how they get busted out of class, but in Kuro Neko we see how collecting the miraculous from even four temp heroes is stressful and time consuming for Ladybug. Maybe this is the episode where she’ll start considering making more people/all of them permanent at some point, and maybe even considering that everyone knowing each other’s identities would make things way easier.
That’s all for now. I have no time, but I’m sooo tempted to draw the four of them in fashion inspired by their hero forms waking down the street “late with iced coffee”. I can see the designs in my head already. I hope to see fan art of all four of them, and I really hope the show will develop all of them at least a little this episode.

Hey my disasterpiece ally! I plan on giving you just that and then some! This will, count as part two to the fic I did for my good friend @cyberstarfox not too long ago. After this one will be a nice fic that explains how both are tied together! Anyways, enough of me rambling on about my intentions, I hope this fares you well, friendo! Your presence is gratefully appreciated anytime! As always, happy reading!)
Eddie was enjoying the warmth of his bed. He’d only been in it for what felt like twenty minutes when yelling from down stairs tore him abruptly from his beauty rest.
“Edward freaking Nygma,” the voice he’d grown to know had somehow managed to get into his room. “This is not a drill, I’m flipping my shit!”
He slipped into his lime green robe, slid his feet into slippers, and left his room begrudgingly.
“You rang,” he propped himself in the door frame facing you.
“My aunt called,” you pleaded. “We’re having a family reunion today.”
He stared confused, then understood your reasoning. You looked up at him with the most pathetic expression on your face, and there was a silent agreement between the two of you.
“Go get dressed,” you headed to make coffee as you somewhat told him.
Not too long after the warm beverage was done Eddie trudged through the living room and towards the kitchen, fighting with his best question mark tie. As he finished his coffee, the two of you headed out for a road trip.
“(Y/N),” Ed gasped as you took a sharp turn, narrowly avoiding a wreck. “Did we just go on two wheels??”
You shrugged, “guess so, holy crap.”
Eddie, whose face was whiter than HD printer paper, scolded you. “Holy crap, my ass we could have died!”
You both screamed for a moment as you, yet again, almost crashed into the back of someone’s car. This time though, however, it wasn’t your fault. Ed unbuckled his seatbelt at the stop light.
“What are you doing,” your attention was taken, once again, from the road.
“Put it in park,” he demanded, “I’ll drive, you give me directions. I don’t want to die today.”
You did as told, gripping the leather tight, as you gazed upset at your steering wheel. “Okay, I’m sorry.”
Ed’s expression changed immediately, and he couldn’t help but reach out for an awkward side hug. He consoled you, feeling a little guilty for snapping at you.
“I’m sorry,” he began to plead. “I didn’t mean to make you feel bad.”
You glanced over, then returned the embrace, “It’s okay, I’m just really stressed,” he could almost hear it in your voice.
“Hey, don’t explain yourself,” he consoled you. “Let’s go. We’ll get this done, then I’ll take us out to eat.”
“Food is nice,” you smiled meekly at your bestie. “You really know me, don’t you?”
The pitiful sound of your question made the two of you laugh, you put the car back into drive, then headed onward, arriving just in time to meet up with the cool family members.
As the two of you exit the vehicle, a friendly and familiar voice greets you, embosomed you into a tight hug.
“(Y/N)” you hear from a crushed grip.
“(F/M),” you gasped as the wind rushed back into your lungs once you’d been released from the vice grip of your (F/M).
You guys chatted up for a few, Eddie introduced himself, then you lot went into the family home you’d grown up knowing. As you took a few steps into the looming two story brownstone, your anxiety sent shivers down your spine. Calmly, your best friend picked up the slack and grabbed your hand.
A few gruelling and lacklustre hours later, you and your best friend escaped to the car, more than happy to peel out of the parking spot and speed homeward.
“Food,” you looked your best friend over once you’d reached the highway.
“Definitely food,” he agreed and shot you a smile. “You pick or do I?”
You shrugged, ran your fingers through your hair, and kept your eyes on the road. Making sure that you were in the right lane, Ed pointed out an exit sign.
“Take this exit, it’ll get us back to Gotham faster,” the suggestion was made and advice clearly taken, you turned on your blinker and pulled around the roundabout towards some unknown area. “There’s a nice diner up here that I went to with Jon and my other friends once. It’s pretty good.”
“Do they have fried pickles, though,” you pondered, causing a troubled glance from your pal.
“Fried… pickles,” the quizzical look on Eddie’s face created an outburst of laughter from you. “That’s new.”
You two conversed quite intensely as you took a sharp turn into the diner. Ed’s phone lit up and he gave it a bumfuzzled expression. Swagger Jagger blaring, his fingers couldn’t slide open the phone fast enough.
“This is Edward, better than you. What can I do you for,” a smile spread across his face. “Oh hello Johnny!”
He looked at you and paused for a second, “would you like to attend a tea party?”
Your head fell to one side in confusion, “sure? What’s up?”
He held up his index to pause conversation with you and answered Jonathan who was, by the sound of it, using a cutting board as he talked.
“We would love to go,” his charm shining through the phone as he spoke for the both of you. “What would you like us to bring?”
While he talked to his friend you fiddled with the keys on your key ring, looked out the window just in time to see someone trip, and twiddled your thumbs patiently.
Soon enough, Eddie had ended the call, he glanced at you, “so, Jervis has this friend who’s going through some stuff right now. I think, personally, you two would get along. It’s always nice to have more friends, you know.”
You nodded, waiting for him to stop rambling. “Alright, I’m up for it, what do I have to bring? Should we go get a cake?”
Ed laughed, “definitely, and some pies,” he added, making you smile.
“Let’s do it,” you were pumped for a tea party.
You headed back to Gotham faster than really necessary, only stopping to get pies and a cake, which you and Ed planned on decorating once you reached his apartment. All was right in your world on this day, as you two prepared to throw a party for your new friend.

NASA discovers a new planet where there could be life
NASA discovers a new planet where there could be life
NASA has just announced that it has discovered a new planet that has characteristics similar to Earth, such as size. Located a hundred light years away, it was named TOI 700 d and identified thanks to data provided by the TESS satellite which is specially designed to search for exoplanets - in other words planets orbiting a star other than our Sun. Find out how NASA discovers a new planet where there could be life. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({});
NASA's transit exoplanet research satellite (TESS) has discovered its first planet the size of Earth in the habitable zone of its star, the range of distances where conditions can be conducive to the presence of water. liquid on the surface. Scientists confirmed the discovery, called TOI 700 d, using NASA's Spitzer space telescope and modeled potential environments on the planet to help inform future observations. Three planets discovered by NASA
Other planets of the same type were identified before, thanks to the old Kepler space telescope. However, it is the first planet to be discovered by TESS, which began its exploration in 2018. TESS focuses on part of the sky to identify if there are planets crossing in front of stars. This causes the star to momentarily drop in brightness. This will allow TESS to conclude that a planet exists, to infer its size, its orbit, etc. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({});
How is this new star
The TOI 700 star is small, about 40% the size and volume of our Sun, having a surface temperature reduced to half. TESS had identified 3 planets orbiting this star, named TOI 700 b, c, and d. Only the last is in the area declared habitable. It is almost the size of Earth - only 20% larger - and orbits its star in 37 days. It receives 86% of the energy given by the Sun to the Earth. What remains to be determined is its composition. So the researchers invented simulations taking into account the size and type of the star. This is to guess the constitution of the atmosphere and the surface temperature. According to NASA, it may be a planet covered by oceans whose "thick atmosphere invaded by carbon dioxide is similar to that of Mars when it was young, according to the postulates of scientists ". (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({});
Similar to the moon and the earth
One face of this planet is always turned towards its star. It’s like the Moon with Earth, it’s called synchronous rotation. According to this model, this face would be continuously covered with clouds. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({}); Another simulation foresees a variant of the Earth without oceans, where the winds will blow from the masked face towards the luminous face. These are only the beginnings of a discovery, it is now up to the various astronomers that falls the heavy task of prospecting the planet by means of other instruments, to arrive to collect new data which will perhaps agree with one models imagined by NASA.

HP ProBook 5330m Review
We often really need to chuckle when laptop makers talk about creating company methods look a lot more palatable to the staff members toting 'em.Soon after all,it really is not like we're about to stroll off the task since we don't such as appears to be like of that black box we have been assigned.Even so,laptop computer manufacturers are going away from their strategy to make their corporate systems search additional consistent with their sexier consumer cousins.Take the Lenovo ThinkPad X1,for example,a slimmed-down model of the firm's signature layout Dell Latitude E5530 Accu updated using a buttonless touchpad,Dolby audio, and also a much-maligned glossy exhibit.Toshiba, meanwhile, not too long ago revamped its line of business notebooks to seem like the lightweight Portege R705 - also a crossover hit.Which provides us towards the HP ProBook 5330m.This thirteen.3-incher provides a metal-clad human body and Beats Audio - a primary on an HP company equipment, but a staple throughout its client stable. And yet,the company's wooing the IT fellas, way too, having a matte screen, optional prepaid cellular broadband,Intel vPro engineering, and TPM circuitry. It scores major details for benefit, but can it dangle  Let's come across out.
Design
We'll be sincere: right after spending a few minutes with all the 5330m again in April,we arrived away while using the visceral experience that its two-tone keyboard deck, beige trackpad, and boxy form weren't specially attractive - enable by itself youthful. Therefore you really know what  We nonetheless never feel it truly is current, for every se,but immediately after each week of tests,we will at the least respect what a well-made device it is.An enormous aspect of that, obviously,is definitely the elements employed. With the exception of the bottom, the chassis Microsoft Surface Pro five Oplader as well as hinge are both equally fashioned out of durable aluminum. As for your underside,it truly is crafted from magnesium, whereas even some high-end notebooks revert to plastic, and it has a soft, rubbery complete. The bottom also appears to be like thoroughly clean, having a pop-out door housing the removable battery. It is really also negative, then, this laptop that tries so hard to be hip continue to manages to glimpse dated. Our big bone of contention has often been the strip of matte aluminum ringing the keyboard deck Asus FX502VM Oplader and palm rest. The contrast in between the brushed and clean metals and the light and darker greys is just one occupied combo, and would make the keyboard deck feel additional cramped than it is actually.Even if HP had opted for a completely brushed aluminum chassis, the 5330m might have even now seemed the portion of a really serious business notebook, only additional exquisite in comparison to the a single we are considering.Within the conclusion, plainly,it will come all the way down to notion. An HP rep explained the look as "timeless." We say it is stodgy. Also, one previous gripe which is neither right here nor there: what is up together with the gratuitous Beats Audio branding  You'll find the logos painted within the upper-right hand corner on the bezel, plus the front edge of the notebook - equally stinging annoyances because you can not do anything to eliminate them. And indeed,we all know the number of of you fellas experience about stickers, but if HP has some contractual obligation to advertise the hell out of its partnership Asus A32N1331 Accu with Dr.Dre,at least use a medium folks can dispose of at the time they unbox the laptop.
These quibbles apart,we had been pleasantly stunned by how light-weight the 5330m is.Specified its boxy 0.99-inch thick profile,we would not blame you in the event you guessed this thing felt significant. In fact,at 3.99 kilos it weighs more than the 3.7-pound ThinkPad X1,though the wedge-shaped X1 is substantially thicker at its chunkiest point. In truth, the 5330m's heft suggests it's going to really feel extra grounded once you utilize it with your lap.Not which the X1 ever slipped off even though we were typing, not surprisingly;it is just which the 5330m features a additional reassuring weight distribution. And,because the 5330m is narrower,it truly is much easier to grip with 1 hand. The laptop computer Dell JWPHF Accu also features a 720p webcam, which provides vivid photo good quality with well balanced colours, while when you can see while in the resized nonetheless beneath, images are grainy,in spite of ample lighting. For anyone who's viewed an HP laptop computer lately, the 5330m's island keyboard should really seem common. The keys have a smooth end and flat surface area - a contrast to Lenovo's ThinkPads, whose keys have scooped caps. The 5330m's keys are quieter, but not extra specific - they felt sticky, and often did not register letters. This resulted in missing letters we could have sworn we typed. The spacing amongst the keys is ideal, though,as you may well assume using a laptop computer this size,HP did really need to squish the arrow keys to guarantee the letter Asus X205TA Accu and Shift keys experienced ample home.Bonus: the 5330m comes common that has a backlit keyboard, which helps brighten up that staid design. Many a time,we've knocked HP's laptops for shipping with flaky touchpads. We are happy to state the 5330m gets it suitable. The touchpad contains a smooth,low-friction area, and two-fingered scrolling is effective pretty well. Our only grievance is really a beauty one particular, which the pad's taupe colour is dreary and won't match the remainder of the procedure. The buttons, far too,are responsive, while they truly feel a little bit mushy - kind of like acquiring lure doorways Asus P2520LA Oplader beneath your fingers.
Performance
The HP ProBook 5330m's two.5-GHz Core i5-2520M CPU,seven,200-rpm harddrive, and Intel Hd Graphics 3000 GPU allow for the notebook to provide more than enough muscle mass for business enterprise tasks and Hd movie playback, but not for gaming. On PCMark Vantage,an artificial benchmark that steps over-all overall performance, the 5330m scored a strong 6,898,perfectly earlier mentioned the five,584 thin-and-light notebook classification common and comfortably forward in the 2.3-GHz Core i5-powered Portege R835 along with the 1.4-GHz Core i5-enabled ThinkPad Edge E220s.The 500GB 7,200-rpm Hitachi harddrive booted into Home windows 7 Qualified 64-bit in 68 seconds, just a little slower in comparison to the 65-second group common. The generate took 2 minutes and 31 seconds to complete the Laptop File Asus P2520LA Accu Transfer Check, which involves copying 4.97GB of mixed media data files in the drive.Which is a rate of 33.7 MBps,improved compared to the category regular of twenty five.seven MBps as well as more quickly when compared to the ThinkPad Edge's 30.one MBps.For the reason that it takes advantage of a second-generation Main i5 CPU,the HP ProBook 5330m is excellent at transcoding online video. The notebook took just forty four seconds to convert a 114MB standard-definition MP4 to AVI format making use of Oxelon Media Encoder,14 seconds faster in comparison to the category typical. It took an even-faster 34 seconds to transcode a 5-minute 1080p movie in CyberLink Media Espresso,a plan that can take gain of the CPU's Intel QuickSync technologies for encoding. That point is way quicker than the one:20 classification average. It is a great thing the HP ProBook 5330m comes with a detachable battery, since company vacationers are going to have to have a spare. To the Laptop computer Battery Examination, which consists of continuous net surfing above Wi-Fi,the ProBook lasted a lame four hrs and 14 minutes.Which is half an hour fewer than the ThinkPad Edge E220s,45 minutes HP EliteBook 8460p Oplader under the group normal, and much more than two hrs less as opposed to Toshiba Portege R835.Thinking about that we operate the check while using the laptop's monitor at 40-percent brightness,we are able to only consider how quickly the ProBook would operate outside of juice when you utilized it at entire brightness and viewed movie.HP doesn't even offer you an extended everyday living battery choice. The thirteen.3-inch 1366 x 768 matte display screen around the ProBook 5330m gives vivid colors and sharp pictures with good viewing angles of approximately forty five levels for the still left or right and no reflections at all.The mix with the two.5-GHz Core i5-2520M and Intel Hd Graphics 3000 GPU proved much more than sufficient to play even full High definition films with excellent clarity and precision. No matter if we ended up streaming a 720p episode of Fringe from Fox.com or playing a 1080p Quicktime trailer for Shark Night time 3D,movement was sleek and pictures Lenovo L13M4P02 Accu ended up obvious. While using the assist of Beats Audio know-how,the HP ProBook 5330m delivers a high-quality tunes knowledge.
On the bright side, the HP ProBook 5330m's Broadcom 43224AG 802.11n wireless card presented actually epic transfer fees of fifty.2 Mbps and forty three Mbps at distances of 15 and fifty ft from our router. That is way speedier compared to the 35.four and 21.seven Mbps classification averages. Our $899 configuration with the ProBook 5330m also comes with a built-in 3G modem which allows buyers to join cell broadband LG 29UB65 Oplader assistance from all four main U.S.carriers.You may also indication up for HP's DataPass, which allows for pay as you go access on Sprint's network. The ProBook 5330m will come pre-loaded with HP's industry-leading ProtectTools suite of security purposes. These contain File Sanitizer for securely erasing files, password supervisor for storing all of your current website passwords, and generate encryption that secures your data from prying eyes although your travel is ripped away from the notebook.ProtectTools also permits you to definitely create a fingerprint or facial recognition login. In the event you select to employ facial recognition, you may also demand end users to have a Bluetooth-capable phone Samsung S27B350H Oplader making sure that they are going to want the two the mobile phone and their faces to log in.For anyone who drop their passwords, fingers, faces,or telephones,HP has Sparekey, that will question you a few private questions to get better your password. In combination with ProtectTools,HP includes its Electrical power Assistant application, which lets you exert fine command over the system's electric power options. The applying has some exclusive features, these for a heritage tab that shows in-depth graphs regarding your electricity use over time and the way a lot every ingredient employs. There is certainly also a scheduler that allows you to regulate when the ability profile HP 807957 001 Accu changes so your notebook can,by way of example,go into low electrical power mode after 6 p.m.on weekdays.HP's Connection Supervisor lets end users to show on and off several community connections, from your Wi-Fi to Bluetooth,Ethernet, and Cell Broadband.ArcSoft Webcam companion allows you to definitely shoot images or movie together with the bundled 720p webcam.HP Backs the ProBook 5330m by using a common one-year warranty on sections and labor.See how HP fared within the most current Tech Help Showdown and our Ideal & Worst Manufacturers report.
Features
Around the edges, the ProBook 5330m has all of your usual ports and slots: a few USB 2.0 ports,VGA,HDMI,a mix headphone and microphone port,Gigabit Ethernet, and an SD card slot.Additionally you get Bluetooth,a webcam, plus a fingerprint reader and TPM one.2 which will be used for authetication in conjunction along with the installed HP ProtectTools software package. You really don't get USB 3.0 with this notebook, and we assume that is somewhat greater than a minor drawback, even for a small business model. In spite of getting a company laptop computer, the ProBook 5330m has Beats Audio branding and functions a lot of equaliser configurations to engage in with.To get a compact laptop computer, its small speakers are really superior.Though they understandably really don't have a very deep bass response, the equaliser is often used to adjust their output and make an enjoyable music-listening experience HP 609940 001 Oplader when in a compact area.In actual fact,pound-for-pound,we assume it produces improved high quality audio in comparison to the Pavilion dv6 multimedia notebook.Though HP has been doing considerably much better in terms of  managing heat in its notebooks, the ProBook 5330m got unusually sizzling at times through our review.Typical idle or world wide web searching temperatures remained under 90 degrees Fahrenheit, but the underside of the notebook reached peak temperatures exceeding 100 levels Fahrenheit when we stressed the process with our benchmark tests. The palmrests and aluminum major deck in the notebook kept cool, but the magnesium alloy base ended up radiating the majority in the heat. The cooling fan only became noticeable when the notebook was reaching significant temps as well as fan worked at maximum speed to push heat away from your main components.
Conclusion
At the top with the function day,the HP ProBook 5330m could be the sort of small business notebook you'll be pleased to consider property. For you get a well-equipped notebook with extremely tough construction, superior general performance an a nice keyboard with LED backlighting.Of course,at that value you need to accept limited configuration solutions, limited ports, and average battery life.I wasn't too happy to see how hot the bottom of this notebook will get when you're running graphics-intense tasks, but HP is giving you quite a bit of PC to get a relatively modest quantity of cash.Regrettably, there are also a number of points that spoiled the positive impression.Design and style and workmanship were being not one with the problems even though - to the contrary:the HP ProBook 5330m genuinely scored in this article. Workmanship Dell PA 1650 02D3 Oplader was consistent on an extremely substantial level and also the structure succeeded with excellent resources and type. The keyboard continued the winning streak and offered considerably for your money.Extremely pleasant typing truly feel,splash-water resistance and back-light helped it score very positively.Further, the subnotebook presents incredibly excellent efficiency and quite a few stability attributes.Touchpad and mouse buttons received the very first damaging marks;the touchpad is pretty compact and the cheaply done mouse buttons look outside of place and fail to match the high quality in the rest of the notebook. The 3G radio would not really make up for that. The worst element of this notebook is the bad display screen.Brightness is meager in comparison to competing notebooks.Producing matters worse will be the uneven illumination and reduced distinction.Maybe not that a lot of people utilize a organization notebook to edit visuals, but a brighter display screen would definitely not hurt and have a positive effect through outdoor use.All round, the HP ProBook 5330m is still a decent and above all fantastic searching subnotebook.Regrettably, HP gives up points thoughtlessly. The HP ProBook 5330m could have done noticeably superior if HP experienced just applied a improved display. The elementary prerequisites for any very excellent result ended up in location.

Critical Commentary:
First things first, with this new movie featuring Dwayne Johnson, released this week on 4K Blu-ray with the aptly if not on the nose moniker “Skyscraper”(2018), is a terrible exercise in crossing a number of previous movies yet done in such a way as to be bland as well as so obvious that viewers are far better off either watching “Die Hard” (1988) or even the not so great “The Towering Inferno” (1974). The main issue with this movie is quality control as well as the seemingly inability of Johnson to say no to any movie that comes across his purview, which is a horrible way to maintain a career that is either built on box office success, critical reactions or audience reactions. If you judged “Skyscraper” by any of these measurements then this movie failed on all accounts, which actually joins a long line of Johnson’s movies, they only seem to be increasing as time moves on. It appears that outside of the ‘Furious’ franchise Johnson seems more than happy to fill out his career with some poor remakes, reboots or reimagining’s that all mostly seem to be variations on his own persona that people are starting to catch on with so are avoiding the trip to see them at the cinema. Of course there has been the odd exception “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” (2017) is one that audiences enjoyed whilst generating almost US$1 billion at the global box office. Which brings us back to “Skyscraper” a movie that is just a ludicrous idea of a movie that seems happy to bring together Johnson, some sub par CGI, a story that makes little sense as well as a narrative that doesn’t mind reminding you that this is based on other far better ideas executed much better with main characters that can actually act.
There is one other aspect of this movie that is troubling, that is the fact that Dwayne Johnson’s character is only supposed to have one leg, as part of one was amputated because of some vague event that happened in his past when he was some kind of special forces operative. The odd thing is that this aspect of the character really does not come into play, it serves as just a way for him to overcome a physical obstacle, it exists for no other reason which I am surprised that more was not made of this when there has been an outcry from the public in regard to able bodied people portraying characters with physical impairments. It may be because this movie didn’t come up on peoples radar as it is just that bad that it was not a story.
“Skyscraper” has been written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber who has not only worked with Johnson before, on “Central Intelligence” (2016) that was quite funny although suffered from some of the problems as this, but also wrote and directed the excellent “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004), his first feature movie. What seemed like a great debut that may have heralded a very good comedy career and has in a way did not have in its future a mess like “Skyscraper”. Thurber whose other movies have at least been funny as well as in their own way, original was a welcome figure in the comedy genre. Not only that but they all used the casts provided in very funny original ways, which except for one actor definitely does not happen in this movie. This is definitely Thurbers highest budget so I can only assume there was some tinkering behind the scenes especially with Johnson’s friend and producer Hiram Garcia who seems to be behind some of Johnson’s decision-making. My feeling is that Johnson needs to start making original movies as well as original characters, he needs to start gambling on originality not retreads.
So what is “Skyscraper” about? U.S. Marine war veteran and retired FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader, Will Sawyer, assesses security for skyscrapers. A suicide explosion from a previous mission has left one leg amputated, below the knee. He is fitted with a modern prosthetic leg, which keeps his full mobility. Sawyer is tasked with inspecting the Pearl, and his family – wife Sarah and twin children Georgia and Henry move into the building. Sawyer confirms to Zhao, security directors Ajani Okeke and Sawyer’s friend and fellow ex-FBI agent Ben Gillespie, and insurance executive Mr. Pierce, that the building’s fire and security systems are secure, but he needs to inspect the offsite security center that controls the system. Zhao then hands Sawyer a tablet computer that gives full administrative access to The Pearl’s computer systems that can only be unlocked by facial recognition. So from there it moves into familiar territory that if you have seen any movie will be familiar and you can guess from queues throughout how this will end.
Make no mistake this is a Dwayne Johnson movie that presents him as that everyman as well as superman who is a career guided professional yet has well rounded beautiful children with a brilliant beautiful wife who not only has her own career but supports her husbands. Now there is nothing inherently wrong with this but no hero is perfect, I mean look at John McClane from the “Die Hard” (1988-present) franchise, he has flaws throughout his character, most notably dealing with his family. Johnson has no such issues which makes him one dimensional, not only that, it makes him about as deep as a video game character which really is all this movie is, a video game on the big screen. It is so paint by numbers that it is boring, this is an issue with all the characters Johnson plays in all his movies, supermen who are everyman all bland and supremely unrealistic something he still has in common with his wrestling alter ego. The highlight of this movie is definitely Neve Campbell who plays Johnson’s wife who is just terrific in her limited role, in actuality I could have watched this movie with her as the protagonist and Johnson in a supporting part, if only. Campbell reminded me why she could have been the actress of her generation especially making a movie mistake like this at least watchable, the same can be said of the young actors playing their children.
Sometimes, just sometimes movies can paste over their inadequacies with big moments, action set pieces or great special effects, sadly “Skyscraper” really has none of these, there are no surprises and the immense amount of CGI is quite subpar to say the least. One of the issues is that there is an extreme lack of physical effects so when we have humans interacting or attempting to dodge what are just CGI effects there is a lack of danger or peril which leads to that word again boredom. Attempting to create peril using a family or a fake missing limb is just cheap on the filmmakers part, what they seemed to have missed out on is to create something that is based in reality then giving the audience three dimensional characters that are then thrust into a story where it is natural, understandable and makes sense. After watching “Skyscraper” go and watch that first “Die Hard” movie, see how similar movies do things different so that one is a classic, the other not so much.
While I wouldn’t go out to cinemas to see this and to be honest I have not felt the need to see a Dwayne Johnson movie at the cinemas since “San Andreas” (2015) (not counting ‘Furious’ movies as I don’t really consider them his), and judging from his upcoming movies I do not see myself returning I would say it is enough to watch his movies at home on the small screen. “Skyscraper” is a movie I would say is fine to watch at home with your brain off, it is laughably stupid but if you are wanting something to just watch and forget then, believe it or not, you could do much worse.
Technical Commentary:
Video:
“Skyscraper” arrives on 4K UHD with a crisp and colorful 2160p transfer with HDR10 and Dolby Vision that easily rises above its 1080p counterpart.
The image enjoys a nice color upgrade with Dolby Vision HDR. With Dolby Vision and the added resolution, there is an appreciable improvement in depth and color saturation where the whites don’t feel like they’re blooming as harshly.
A good example of the improvement is the scene where Johnson’s family is running around the giant park as well. In 1080p, the image is dark and murky without much depth. With the added resolution and WCG, the 4K Blu-ray offers more shadow separation. Overall this is a pretty great looking transfer that displays a clear improvement over it’s SDR counterpart.
Audio:
An action movie needs a great audio mix and “Skyscraper” gets that with its Dolby Atmos track. Dialogue is crystal clear throughout and never at odds with the other elements. Sound effects have a nice natural quality to them with many featuring pint-point object places.
Special Features:

Best video doorbells 2020 – secure your home and never miss a delivery with a smart wi-fi doorbell
Ding dong, the doorbell’s dead. Long live the video doorbell! Gone are the days of guessing who’s waiting at your front door as the video doorbell pairs a camera and audio with your smartphone. That means no matter where you are, at home or away, you can see who’s at your door thanks to Wi-Fi connected smart video doorbells.
Pick the best gadgets for security, cooking, cleaning and more with our buying guides
Want to tell a delivery person where to leave a package when you’re out? Most video doorbells offer two-way chat so you can do exactly that. Or perhaps you want to let a friend know that you’re just putting the kids down for a nap and will be there soon.
These new versions of the doorbell also work as a home security system, in some cases. Many can monitor your home’s front with alerts sent to your phone for motion in a selected area. Some even store recordings, allowing you to see faces – ideal in case of a break in.
Of course video doorbells cost a good chunk more than a classic doorbell chime. So is it worth making the jump and which is best for you? Read on to find out everything you need to know.
Why do I need a video doorbell?
If it isn’t clear already, there are two main reasons to go video with your doorbell. To see and interact with who’s at your front door, and to offer video surveillance of your home’s main point of entrance. It’s also great for rental owners, especially Airbnb operators, who aren’t always at the property.
Of course these two also break down into more details, like being able to see potential guests at your door even when you’re at the bottom of the garden, thanks to that Wi-Fi connection and phone app. Or the ability to use that camera as a deterrent to would be burglars that now recognise these doorbells as recording devices.

Some video doorbells even use facial recognition to intelligently alert you to a guest, when you need to know. This helps avoid too many notifications. On that same subject, you can more easily silence your doorbell making these ideal for those people with young children whose nap time almost inevitably coincides with the delivery man’s arrival.
Best video doorbells 2020
1. Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus – best video doorbell for pre-roll footage
The Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus is one of the best models out there from the company that started it all, several generations ago. As such it has managed to perfect the offering while driving down the price at the top-end. The result is a video doorbell that runs on battery, for super easy installation which took us under an hour, and lasts for half a year before you need to charge it – which is done easily via a phone charger.
This looks quite similar to previous models but that’s not a bad thing as these not only look decent but are also recognisable and work as a deterrent for burglars.
Video quality is high at Full HD 1080p while audio is clear in both directions. What’s improved in this model is dual band Wi-Fi connectivity which means you get features like Pre-roll. This, as the name suggests, gives you a few seconds of video to show the person approaching the doorbell before they press, allowing you to see who’s coming ahead of time.
Sounds pretty standard but the app works so well it’ll actually pop up in your phone’s notifications before you even enter the app itself.
Or just pair this with Alexa and you’ll be told through your speaker, for example, that someone’s at the door – a feature we found very useful in the kitchen away from the door chime. Go for the Chime Pro and it acts as a Wi-Fi booster too, although we had issues with this, which Ring says was our Wi-Fi.
Thanks to smart sensors and the ability to designate zones which the camera responds to, notifications aren’t too annoying even when you have a busy road in front of your home. The Ring Protect plan is affordable at £2.50 per month and gets you lots of smart features like longer term video recording, making this a fully fledged home security solution complete with night vision.

2. Nest Hello – best video doorbell for facial recognition
Google bought Nest so it now features as part of the company’s line-up for smart home products. So if you own a Thermostat, Home or Nest Wifi then this is a great addition to that ecosystem which is all run through the one app. That means Google Assistant integration for door alerts on your Google Home speaker but it also means Google smarts.
As such this doorbell is clever enough to recognise faces. That means you can have it alert you only when you want to know for a certain person, say when your child gets home late. This is clear to see thanks to the HD video with HDR which we found meant you got a clear image even when sunlight was in the background or when in night vision mode.
The look is super minimal and the easy installation process goes along with that. But it’s backed by a robust 128-bit encryption so you don’t need to worry about security. You can also rest easy on recharging as this only comes in a hardwired version. That can make installation tough if you don’t already have a doorbell wired in. But it means you can get the video to record constantly for you to scroll back through, for up to three hours at a time, without worrying about battery life. But, of course, you’ll have to pay if you want to store video for the longer term.

3. Ring Video Doorbell Pro – best video doorbell for personalisation
Yes it’s a Ring doorbell appearing again early on in this list. That’s because Ring specialises in what it does and it does it well. But there are different models to suit different needs and in this case it’s for those that don’t want to faff with a battery and would like a lot of options.
One thing we found in testing video doorbells is that they’re only as good as their notifications. Yes, you could use it at its most basic, only responding to the doorbell press, but if you want to be secure too then motion detection is important. That’s why this model excels as it uses smart sensors and an app that lets you set zones in order to only be alerted when you need to be.
The design is also of appeal here with a super slim finish and long single black glass central unit to give a more premium look to the front of the house. There are interchangeable plates too so you can pick the look that fits. Even wiring this in is easy with an adapter included and all the tools and instructions to get you up and running quickly.
The price is the only downside here, although we did find audio quality could vary with it less clear sometimes but that was likely our Wi-Fi in those cases.

4. Byron Wi-Fi Rechargeable Video Doorbell – best video doorbell for free video storage
Byron is a long-time doorbell specialist that has made the jump to smart video doorbells and has landed on its feet. The result is a video doorbell that, unlike many brands, will give you free local video storage.
As you’d expect from the brand, there is motion detection which can input through to your phone using the app. While basic, similar to the design of this unit, the app works well and does what’s needed when it comes to the simpler functionality like two-way video talk.
The video quality is excellent at 1080p quality and the speed of the feed to your phone is only limited by your local Wi-Fi. Unlike the video storage, which is local, meaning you can store longer term without paying a subscription for cloud video.
While this model is battery powered, with a six-month life, you can also get a wired version for those that already have a doorbell wired in and want to make a relatively easy swap.
Byron also sells electric door openers, meaning you could theoretically see who’s at the door and open it for them without moving from where you are in the back garden. Perhaps more realistically, this works with a gate opener making it perfect for deliveries where you want them dropped off in your locked back garden.

5. Eufy Video Doorbell – best video doorbell for 2K video quality
Eufy is growing fast in the digital smart home world with robot vacuums and security cameras leading the way. Its doorbell is a standout model as it, unlike most of the competition, offers an eye-melting 2K video quality on its feed thanks to a Sony sensor.
This is a pro grade lens, which goes some way to explaining the price of this video doorbell. The quality is great but, to be honest, isn’t that noticeable on a small smartphone screen when compared to a 1080p video.
What is a really appealing feature here is the inclusion of free cloud storage. This means you keep access to all your video, but without having to store it locally. Another pro feature is the customisation for motion sensitivity with a selection of activity zones, motion sensing and human detection.
All that amounts to notifications only when relevant – something our smartphone battery certainly benefited from. This also makes no compromises with power, allowing you to wire it in or go for battery. Using it on battery should last for half a year which seemed accurate in testing but of course it depends on how active your notification settings are.
The use of an included base station helps to keep battery use low and WI-Fi worries less of an issue, which we struggled with on other models.

6. Swann Smart Video Doorbell – best budget video doorbell
You don’t have to spend a lot to upgrade your doorbell to a video model. Just be prepared to lose some of the high-end features at the lower end price point. In this case you will be limited to 720p video quality, akin to that of the Ring Video Doorbell. While that’s not high on a TV, on your phone it’s plenty clear enough.
Audio quality could be better, but for the price it does the job. The whole installation process is similarly simplistic with an easy install of this battery powered doorbell and a minimal app that shows video footage if the bell rings, we noted a few second delay, or if there is movement detected.
While that’s nice, it can mean a lot of annoying notifications if you live on a busy street. That said, we simply adjusted the heat sensor in the app and this helped.
One stand out feature is that this allows you to record all the footage to an SD card. That means no need to shell out for a cloud based storage subscription as the big name brands demand.
Battery life isn’t great with a claim of two months, that’s actually closer to one, although charging is quick and easy via USB cable. That said, we used it a lot in testing so it probably is better with settled use. You can also vary the clip length between 15 and 60 seconds with the shorter end saving on battery.
Ideal Home’s rating: 3 out of 5 stars

7. Ezviz DB1 Video Doorbell – best high-res affordable video doorbell
Ezviz might not be a big brand name but it’s quietly been working away at home security for years, offering decent specs for a low price. This wired model fits that description perfectly, undercutting the competition while still offering high-resolution video and a minimal design.
All the usual features are here with night vision, two-way chat, dual band Wi-Fi, IP65 weather proofing and app support. What it also offers, that’s better than some of the competition, is a full 180-degree field of view, ideal for smaller spaces, heat based motion detection, and local storage on MicroSD cards.
The heat detection was a little overly sensitive at first but this can be easily adjusted to avoid too many notifications. Settings range from 5 to 3 to 1.5 metres allowing you to perfect this so you only get notified when someone is actually near your door. Or, as we did, just turn it off and let them press the bell.
Since this records everything, you can always check back should there be an incident worth your attention. Despite the price, this even works with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant for smart alerts on your home devices.
Ideal Home’s rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

How to buy the best video doorbell for you
Video doorbells come in plenty of different shapes and sizes. But what’s important is that they also come with a wide variety of features. There are a few stand out specs you’ll want to make sure you take into consideration before you buy.
Wired or wireless: some are wired into power, like a classic doorbell, while others can use battery allowing them to attach easily, anywhere Ecosystem: some brands work with a wider ecosystem of gadgets, via one app, making your life simpler if you’ve already got some of this kit Home security: some are built for this, with motion alerts, while others simply respond to the button press Ongoing costs: some charge for storage of video in the cloud, while others allow you cheap or free local storage options Quality: the better the quality the more you can see, which is important if you want this for home security too Audio quality: can vary so if you plan to do a lot of two-way chat this is a feature to look closer at
How much should I spend on a video doorbell?
Video doorbell prices are pretty varied, with older models for under £100 and newer, more feature packed units coming in at over £400. Usually you can quite easily decide which works for you based on what you need. The problems arise when you need a particular feature that’s reserved only for the higher end models.
Thankfully these have been around long enough now that competition is growing. As such everyone is trying to cram in the best features at a lower price. That means you should now be able to get what you want without paying for the top end.
Of course, as is often the case, if you do want the best working video doorbell you’ll need to pay more for it. Another advantage to paying more is that often these higher ends models look better too, enhancing your front door’s finish.
What other key questions do I need to ask?
Power can be an issue. If you’re going for a battery unit, make sure it’s made to last at least six months or you’ll be annoyed at having to remember to charge the battery. Ease of battery access in these models can also be important to help make life simpler. In the case of mains power units, be sure they work with your current doorbell wiring or at least come with the adapter to work using that setup.
How you want to view your callers is another factor. Some devices work with third-party video units, like Ring working with Amazon Echo Show, so you can see who’s at your door without even taking your phone out.
Other units also work with electronic door locks, although this is still in its infancy with mainly US based products. But it’s something worth keeping in mind for the long term.
For many of the best features, like voice controls, or stored video, you’ll likely have to pay for a cloud subscription to the service provider. So taking that cost into consideration for the longer term is also worth keeping in mind.
Field of view could be a factor if the doorbell is going in a tight space. Essentially, the wider the field of view, the more you will see.
