So I finally watched the Borgia's and it was the best & worst thing I ever did.
It was the best because it's the best show I have ever seen, ever - it was so good I didn't sleep just so I could watch it all.
It was the worst because now I have to make do with mediocracy because no other show will ever be that fantastic.

"A wrathful witch cast this spell and a loving witch must end it." Giulia bowed her head in sorrow. "I have tried, Lucrezia. I love your father and I love you and Cesare, for you are his children. I care about you both deeply. And yet I think…" She trailed off and bowed her head. "I do not love him enough."
When Cesare falls victim to an enchantment Lucrezia must accept both her magical abilities and her abiding love for him if she is to break the spell. A Witch in the House of Borgia

Anna von Hausswolff - Sacro Bosco
Video description:
“Sacro Bosco is a garden, based in the centre of Italy, containing grotesque mythological sculptures and buildings overgrown with vegetation, situated in a wooded valley beneath the castle of Orsini. Created during the 16th Century, Sacro Bosco was commissioned by Pier Francesco Orsini, some say to try and cope with his grief following the death of his wife Guilia Farnese, others speculate the purpose was to create art.
About the album Anna explains “there’s a sadness and wilderness that inspired me to write this album, also a timelessness. I believe that this park has survived not only due to its beauty but also because of the iconography, it has been liberated from predictable ideas and ideals. The people who built this park truly set their minds and imagination free. All thoughts fly is a homage to this creation, and an effort to articulate the atmosphere and the feelings that this place evokes inside of me. It’s a very personal interpretation of a place that I lack the words to describe. I’d like to believe Orsini built this monumental park out of grief for his dead wife, and in my Sacro Bosco I used this story as a core for my own inspiration: love as a foundation for creation.”
The accompanying video for the first single "Sacro Bosco" is, just like the music, an interpretation of the park with an imaginary twist. Directed by Gustaf and Ludvig Holtenäs.
Anna summarises, “Sacro Bosco in Bomarzo is a creation carved out from one man’s head. A frozen thought lasting throughout time and touching people across generations. All thoughts fly, Ogni Pensiero Vola, is about this: the importance of sharing for surviving, creating space and evolving. Once you’ve shared your words they are not only yours anymore."”

I’m really into historical fiction, and researching irl people because of it... and lately, I’ve been digging into the Borgias. Most of the fiction surrounding them focused on Lucretia (innocent girl? incestuous villain?) or Guilia Farnese.
A quick history lesson: Guilia was married to a man named Orsino Orsini, but she was the mistress of Rodrigo Borgia. Quite scandalous, since the affair continued even after he became pope. Not much is really known about Orsino, or even how he died at the ripe age of 27.
Idk, I’ve been...churning a fictional idea around in my head about Orsino being gay and in a secret relationship with a man. Ending on a happy note before his death, because I’m sick of the sad gay death trope. Anyway. None of this means shit because I’m never going to write it lmao I’m just rambling

I confess that I despise the name Borgia. ( Lucrezia to Guilia )

should she be shocked or offended? both, perhaps. if giulia admired her audacity for speaking in such a manner to none other than the pope’s mistress, she refused to conceal the blow delivered upon her feelings. the borgias, over time, had become her family, and the sentiments she bore them were as profound as they were genuine. “these are bold words, my lady,” she remarked, a polished comment meant to prevent an antagonism she was loathed to nurture towards women, no matter how encouraged it was by the men who ruled them. “though i know you will find plenty who share your view,  i’m afraid i cannot agree with it.” a rarity in itself but giulia farnese would not be where she was without the great affection and the diligent attention of one borgia pope.

The Grove of Monsters is a strange garden located just outside the small village of Bomarzo, in Italy. It contains some of the most horrific statuary that one can imagine. A huge elephant carries a trampled soldier, a giant tears apart his enemy, a dragon combats its prey and a colossal mouth gapes open to swallow visitors. Built around 1556 by a young nobleman named Duke Pierfrancesco “Vicino” Orsini. It is believed that the garden was created to honor his beloved wife, Guilia Farnese, who passed away shortly after he returned from war. There is no way to know what Orsini’s true intentions were in creating the peculiar grove filled with macabre statuary. He did, though leave hints, placing inscriptions near many of the objects, giving us some clue to what he was thinking. Upon entering what Orsini called his Bosco Sacro (“Sacred Grove”) visitors are greeted with the message: “You who enter this place, observe it piece by piece and tell me afterwards whether so many marvels were created for deception or purely for art.” There are more than two dozen major works of immense art in the garden including a dragon fighting with lions and wolves, many figures depicting the Roman/Greek gods, and a house purposely built on an angle to throw visitors off balance. The artist who created the scupltures is thought to be Pirro Ligorio, a well-known architect of the time. The grove was laid out on a hill and the statues carved out of natural, volcanic, rock outcroppings. For this reason there seems little order to how the place is organized. This, however, might have also been a part of Orsini’s plan. With no logical layout, as one of the inscriptions say, it might have been his way “just to set the heart free.” #destroytheday (throwback post from 11/25/13)
