les amis and their instruments

bc musician!amis is something that can be so personal

enjolras: violin. and other string instruments, but he prefers the violin. their nails are always clipped really really short.

combeferre: any brass instrument, but heavily prefers the french horn. it calms him down. he hates it when courf makes inappropriate jokes abt playing it.

courfeyrac: the saxophone. tbh he could technically play any saxophone but he plays alto sax. they know many songs. probably dozens! but all they play is careless whispers. he's memorized it. everyone sends him sheet music for other songs and pieces. he will not play anything else. help.

feuilly: clarinet. the man can also improvise like nobody's business.

grantaire: guitar, all kinds. no this isn't inspired by george blagden what are you talking about? he's got both short and long nails and it drives everyone crazy. he can also play piano (and drive marius mad with the click of his nails on the keys)

joly: he can't play anything but they can dance. they're a very skilled dancer. but no instruments.

bossuet: used to play tuba before that proved to be a dangerous decision. now plays percussion which is safer. favorite instruments are the tubular bells.

musichetta: any string instrument but has a soft spot for the viola. she's fucking amazing at it. she was made for the spotlight dammit.

jehan: flute. i mean, it's canon. also they've tried to compose things but they got distracted. alas! if you open a certain door you will be flooded with thousands of wips.

bahorel: drums. drums drums drums. the master of drum rolls and fills. he can also play the trumpet but like, badly.

marius: used to play piano, now plays cello. he was forced to play piano and only plays it if he wants to. he duets with enj, r, or chetta sometimes. like enjolras their nails are clipped short (but not as short as enj's)

cosette: she sings and plays the harp. her voice is angelic and lovely and basically what im saying is i love her. also saying this rn my voice hc for her is 1980s concept album cosette.

eponine: plays some guitar with the help of grantaire. they duet sometimes.

gavroche: one (1) very loud kazoo.

Little scene about guitarist!Grantaire seeing Enj for the first time:

The sunset coloured all in red when Grantaire was sitting on the bridge, his guitar between his arms and he was singing:

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey"

But his voice was low and a little bit sad, 'cause he wasn't feeling the song, 'cause he didn't have a sunshine.

The sun seemed so far away, and that song was so sad in his mind.

In that exactly moment, he saw him. A boy was looking at the sunset, a few metres from there. He had blonde hair, shining in the red light; his skin was pale, almost transparent. He had this little smile on his face and he seemed to shine in the sunset' light.

Grantaire smiled, got up from the bench and started to sing again, louder.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine"

The boy turned and their eyes met.

He smiled and Grantaire smiled back, still singing.

When the boy was about to leave, Grantaire suddenly sang: "Please don't take my sunshine away"

The boy laughed a little and sat down on the bench, still listening to the song.

I know it's silly, sorry. I needed some fluff.

Les amis as a band headcanons!

@klayr-de-gall requested Les amis as a band, so here we go: Enjolras: Keyboard player. Helps write the music to the lyrics. Has never taken any keyboard/piano lessons, taught himself by Youtube tutorials. Can play by ear too if needed. Courfeyrac: Lead singer, who loves it when the crowd sings along and often lets them sing the refrain instead of him in concerts. Also known to do requests. Whatever song the audience wants, they get. Regardless of if it's one of their songs or not. Combeferre: Bass player, who claims he can't sing at all and refuses to. None of the band members have actually heard him sing out loud, but he tends to sing when no one else can hear. Grantaire: Guitarist and background singer. Actually has a great voice and some fans would love to see solo stuff from him. Writes original stuff but hasn't recorded any of it... yet. Joly: Is the only band member with a bit of stage fright and takes some persuasion to actually get up on stage, but once he's out there, you'd never know he was nervous about it. Also a background singer. Jehan: Drummer. Usually writes all the songs and is quite good at it even though he's always doubting it's good enough. (At least up until it's released. Once it's released and gets a great response from fans and most critics however, he claims he knew it was a great song all along and not at all a crap song.)

I’m writing a thing with @spaceface-inc about ENJOLTAIRE!! IT’S HAPPENING! It’s hella slow-burn, but it’s also kinda sexy, and it’s set in the ‘60s, so that’s cool, and you should probably definitely read it. Only the first chapter’s out, but we’re planning 8. We frEAKING LOVE IT SO FAR. okay go back to your knitting.

SUMMARY: It's 1969. Enjolras is studying law at the University of Minnesota; Grantaire, known on the stage as ‘R,’ is a proto-punk guitarist. The war in Vietnam rages, and though each student has dodged the draft, each has imprisoned himself in other ways. When they meet at a snowy bus stop, it's the beginning of an escape neither of them could have fathomed.

Guitarist Grantaire

Just because I love him and I’m trashing on Les mis, Grantaire and Enjoltaire.

- Can play lots and lots of instruments, (piano, sax, violin and drums) but he’s awesome with a guitar;

- He’s really good at singing, too;

- He’s in a band with two other guys. Les amis don’t know (yet) about this, except Ponine. It’s not a secret, it just never came out;

- The band’s name is “Minority” cause they all love “Green Day”;

- They play in a suburbian bar;

- The bar’s name is “Blue” and is rather big for a bar;

- The bar’s costumers love them;

- On Thursdays and Saturdays they have a lineup, on Tuesdays they go with audience’s requests;

- Grantaire is always joking on stage, singing even when he doesen’t know the lyrics, while the drummer and the bassist  always manage to play everything;

- Once, someone asked for “Here I am,” and Grantaire only knew half of it, speaking on the guitar solo:

“ I’m sorry, I hope you don’t mind me acting like this up there. My mates are so professional and then there’s me, and I hope you’re not disappointed because”

– the lyrics starts again – 

“ Here I am, this is me, there’s nowhere else on earth I’d rather be” 

 and everyone goes wild.

- He’s an ass about love songs:

“You know, I’ve had a special request tonight” and he’d be  walking on the stage, hands moving all around, “this boy comes to me, asking a song for his girlfriend because today’s their anniversary. Ten minutes later his girlfriend shows up and asks for the same thing” he stops walking “Thing is, that song is horrible, but I’m a good guy so I’m gonna play it nonetheless because love is awesome and I love love”

 And then

 “We need to do this the right way. Both of you, I want you in the middle of the dance floor. Make some space you people, let them dance together while we drown in our despair”

 And then

 “Susan, Susan can you hear me?” (the light technician)

“Susan, I want a blue light on them. Can you see them? Yeah, there, a little on the left…no, my left Susan, not your left.

“Yeah, there. Good? Let’s do this”

-“Ariana Grande? Who asked me to perform Ariana Grande? You know how high her voice is? Do you want me to choke on my vocal chords? Are you trying to kill me?!”

.

One of those nights, Les Amis find themselves there, thanks to Courfeyrac :

“Guys , we have to go to this bar, my friend told me the alcohol’s cheap and the singer is hot. Please please please let’s go.”

- Enjolras didn’t  want to go but they bribed him because “we voted Enjolras, shut the fuck up and come with us” “uhg”

Whoops

-“ Grantaire’s the sexy singer?!” – Joly“

What the fuck” – Courfeyrac“

No way”- Bousset

“ That asshole never said a fucking thing. I’m gonna smash his head” – Jean

“Calm down, Jean”- Bahorel

“He’s really good. We could ask him to perform. We could draw in more people”- Combeferre

“Uh”- Enjolras

“That asshole”- Jean

“Jean, stop.”- Bahorel

“You really didn’t know?!”- Ponine

“You did?!”

- After the performance,  they all move toward R who’s drinking at the counter with the rest of the band

- Jean is the first to arrive, hitting  him on the back of his head. 

Grantaire whips around

“what are you doing here?”-R

“you’ve been holding out on us! Liar!”- Jean

“What do you mean Liar?! I didn’t lie about anything!”-R

“Shut up, asshole”- Jean

“Jean, please calm down”- Bahorel

-You never said anything, why?”- Enj

“I didn’t mean for it to be a secret. We just never talked about it”

“You’re really good”

-They love you”- Courf

“Naah, they just like the music”

“Yeah, no. They love you. I love you too, now. Also, I’m attracted to you, now. That’s so strange”

“That’s disturbing. Courfeyrac, stay away from me”

“Meanie”

- Tuesdays nights at the bar become a common thing. Les amis like messing with Grantaire asking the most absurd songs.

- One night Enjolras asks for “La Marsaillase” and Grantaire laughs so hard he falls down. 

- Grantaire subtly flirts with Enjolras while on stage. Enjolras can tell he’s flirting, but can’t tell with who, so he gets jealous and grumpy. Meanwhile Grantaire thinks he’s offended or something.

- Courfeyrac wants to smash their heads on the bar counter.

-In the end, Grantaire sings “Last night on earth” and then says: “Enjolras, that was for you, you obvious man”.  Enjolras blushes. Courfeyrac screams.

Jehan and Parnasse run a talk show called Queer Kids on the Block, while R and Ponine are co DJs for a free form music power hour.

Grantaire is the guitarist for a band that does house shows, which more often than not takes place in Montparnasse’s basement

This is very late but I'll ask anyway: Thoughts on Guitarist!Grantaire? In a lot of ways I think being a good musician would be a fun idea

Not late at all!

I certainly think Grantaire has musical interests and has dabbled with several different instruments. But the problem is that (in my reading) Grantaire is a habitual dabbler - he’s passably good at plenty of things, but dedicated to practicing none of them. Practice is hard and require dedication and five minutes in he loses all confidence in himself and goes to learn a new dance instead.

If there was something Grantaire could casually do consistently enough that he’d get fairly good at it without ever quite meaning to - yes, I could see something like guitar working. It’s easy to see him playing for friends or for himself when he’s bored. We know he sings in canon and likes to go to places with dancing and music, so that all seems quite plausible!

Wait Shi- 📂

Grantaire has two guitars: Betzy and Caroline.

Caroline is the untouchable guitar,the holy guitar that no one can touch and costed three months worth of pay.

Betzy, on the other hand, it's his older guitar,  full of stickers and writings, little doodles and glued-on scraps of papers. That's because Betzy is the guitar he uses while composing  and the visual feedback helps I'm a lot cuz all of the amis have left their mark on Betzy's black surface.

Anyway

One evening they all meet at the Musain to have a drink, and Grantaire comes in late, throwing the battered guitar case on the table, catching  Jean's attention:

"is that Caroline?"

"nuh-huh, that's my old Betzy girl"

Jean squeaks

"I have my uniposca tonight!"

"go ahead then"

Grantaire hands him the guitar case and jean opens it to retrieve Betzy, drawing on one of the empty spaces left.

At the end of the evening the guitar gained two new doodles, a sticker and a poem on the side. Upon looking at it, observing all the marks left on its surface - The poem Jean wrote just for Betzy and glued right under the neck, Bahorel's doodled panda , the glittered stars Courf made for pride, a page copied from combeferre's favorite book, one of Musichetta's stickers - and so on, Grantaire realizes Enjolras is the only one missing, but once asked, Enjolras's answer is completely different from what he was expecting:

"I didn't think I was allowed to"

"Jojo, you don't need permission" - he hans him  the guitar and one of Jean's uniposca - "please"

And Enj takes them and starts drawing an ugly little doodle of himself and Grantaire as cats, holding the French flag with their tails,

And it's really, really bad because Enj is crap at drawing, but Grantaire still has the care to cover it in transparent nail polish 6 times to prevent it from erasing as soon as he gets home that evening.
