Big ramble post.
So, I was watching zombieland 1&2 tonight with a friend. One of the main characters at some point starts to sing ‘give me a home, where the buffalo roam. & the deer & the antelope play’.
My friend & I both commented that we thought he was singing ‘give me a home among the gum trees’, until we’re like ‘oh wait, he isn’t Australian’ & he continued with the lyrics.
I never realised how similarly they could be sung until then.
But also, just now I was looking up the lyrics to ‘home among the gum trees’ because I learnt all the verses in primary school but had forgotten some. I wanted to see what they were.
In the process of looking them up, I found articles about a mattress company & some sport stars wanting to change the lyrics to ‘reflect the diversity of Australia in the modern day’.
I’m like WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.
Not, there’s racist, prejudice or white washing language in this song.
Not a legitimate reason to change the lyrics. Just change they lyrics because we don’t all live in the bush. WTF. We didn’t all live in the bush when it was written.
The last verse literally says;
‘some people live in houses,
with fences all around.
Others live in mansions,
& some beneath the ground.
But me I like the bush you know...’ ect.
It literally addresses this ‘diversity’ they’re talking about. Where else in the world do people live underground beside Coober pedy, Australia. Not many. Clearly talking about Australia being a diverse place to live.
Talk about cause issues for no reason. I wonder if it was a publicity thing for the brand... not doing themselves any favours though. Write your own god damn song if you want it to say something else. Why change a classic?
I think we can all idealise the Australian bush, especially in a song from our childhood, without ignoring the fact that the majority of Australians don’t live & don’t want to live in the bush. Given how many songs are actually racist or completely ignore/whitewash Australian history, home among the gum trees is the least of our issues. SHUT THE FUCK UP & let us have a cute NON-PROBLEMATIC song.
Plus, I do want to live in the bush. Leave me alone 😅
I am reading these lyrics at face value, I don’t know how to interpret literature & shit. If I’m missing something & somehow something is legitimately racist, please let me know.
