All the Dead Shall Weep by Charlaine Harris
Tumblr media
Gunnie Rose 5
5 out of 5.
Peter Savarova, Eli's younger brother, and Felicia Dominguez Karkarova, Lizbeth's half-sister, come to visit shortly after Lizbeth's miscarriage. Felicia senses the strain between them. When Eli and Peter soon depart for San Diego with no explanation, Lizbeth is positive that her marriage is over, that living in a small town in the middle of nowhere was not enough for her grigori husband.
Felicia and Lizbeth grow closer as events keep putting them in danger. It appears that someone wants Lizbeth dead. Not to mention a sudden influx of suitors for Felicia now that she is old enough and powerful enough, despite still in training, to attend the ball used as a matchmaking event. At least it all helps take Lizbeth's mind off her heartache.
This is a NetGalley ARC, courtesy of Simon & Schuster, with an anticipated release date of September 5, 2023. I cannot thank them enough for this early look at one of my favorite series!
Prepare yourself for a wild ride and some extremely emotional and angst ridden moments. Harris does a spectacular job with the mythology aspect of her worldbuilding, building on events, people, and hints from the previous books in the series. The mix of genres is more than welcome, even if it makes it tough to categorize when posting reviews on Goodreads and StoryGraph.
I particularly love the well-drawn characters. Everyone is real, having bad and good in them. No one is 100% of either. And, more importantly, the characters grow. For instance, throughout the series I've progressed from finding Felicia an annoying brat I was ready to see the last of to truly enjoying her feistiness and inner strength. Or Peter, who first appeared as a nonentity to a sweet, kind and caring young man on the verge of manhood. My heart aches.
The subplots and background events through the last couple of books have really got me thinking and guessing as to what comes next, increasing the suspense. Particularly the hints of war and aggression. Then there is that last line. I honestly look forward to what comes next.

“… So, this Gunny is going to become a Medal of Honor recipient?” Price stood from the bench.
Laswell nodded her head. “Yes… he will. It’s practically guaranteed that in a few weeks the proposal will be on the President’s desk and signed.” She sighed. “Let’s talk more in private.”
She led them to a small room that usually held debriefings but was now converted into a storage room. The projector and computer monitors were still up and covered in dust.
“Tell us more about the Gunny, Laswell.” Gaz looked at her and then to his Captain in worry. They both sat in the old chairs, arms resting on the light gray table.
Laswell sat across from them. “Well, he went through a lot in the last few years. Put his poor wife through lots of heartache with his recovery and all…”
“Wife?” Both Gaz and Price questioned. John shook his head. Was the Gunny cheating?
“Yes? They’ve been married for several years now. I’ve collaborated on several occasions with her.” Kate leaned forward. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”
“Kate, this man knows my daughter.” John stuffed his hand into his pocket and pulled out the skimpy photo of his little girl, now grown woman.
Laswell’s eyes widened, but then her expression changed to an awkward grin. “That’s his wife. Y/N Cortéz, that’s your daughter?”
“You know her by name? How do you know my daughter?” But instead of saying Price after her name, she said Cortéz. John was becoming more confused by the second. His knee was bouncing slightly and his hand was messing with his beard. It took him a moment to process all of her words. “Wait-, you said Cortéz? She… she’s never told me that she was seeing anyone let alone married to them. What the hell is going on here, Kate?”
“I-I don’t know what to say, John. She’s never mentioned her side of the family before. Just her in-laws and their kid.”
“Kid?” Price stood up, palms slamming on the table. “Do you mean to tell me that I have a grandchild out there?”
Kate put a hand to her mouth in shock. “My god… you didn’t know.” Her eyes wandered off to the wall, contemplating. “You don’t know what the life of your daughter has been for… years now?”
“No. Which makes no bloody sense since I talk to her every chance I get!” His voice rose in frustration. Kyle felt like he was in some poor written soap opera that his aunties would watch when he was younger and had stayed with them. On second thought, it was every time he saw them.
“John, Y/N works with me in CIA. She’s a Special Agent in the counterterrorism division.” Price sat back down heavily. “Umm, I have resources in the Naval Criminal Investigative Service that could lend a helping hand on this situation. I’ll give them a call, since the Gunny is a Marine and Y/N is a dependent so she falls under their jurisdiction.”
“Thank you, Kate.” John paused. “I hope they can set everything straight.”
With that Kate left the room. She couldn’t believe that the girl whose office was only a few doors down from hers was the daughter of her best task force Captain. Kate shook her head as theories ran through her mind. Pulling out her phone she dialed a number. She hoped that the late hour in Washington wouldn’t be a bother to the person on the other line.
“Sorry it’s so late, Jethro.”
~~~~~
Price stayed where he was for a moment just staring off into space. Only startled by Kyle placing his hand on his shoulder. “Maybe we should head back to the med tent and see if there are any updates on the Gunny?”
Price looked at the younger man and then rose to his feet. “Yeah, there’s no use just sitting here.”
They soon found themselves in their previous position on that old bench. Waiting for any news. An hour passed by when a doctor, presumably the surgeon who operated on Cortéz, exited the OR and came up to them.
“My guess is that you guys were the ones who found Gunny Cortéz?” She looked at them attentively.
“Yes, we found ‘im.” Both John and Kyle stood up. John continued, “He’s still alive, right? No complications?”
“Yes, he’s been taken care of. Lots of bleeding so he needed a few blood transfusions. No head trauma, but he’ll be in and out of consciousness for a while. He might need another surgery if we find anymore bullet fragments.” She looked between the two of them. “He’ll be moved to a different room in just a few moments. Next of kin will be notified of his condition and efforts will be made to get him back to the states.”
Price thanked the doctor and shook her hand. He had a lot to think about and he was definitely going to send a rather strong message to his daughter about the situation.
Well, I did it. Today, I met my reading goal of 190 books this year. It was a weird year of reading for me. I re-read a lot (a lot)-- AJ Downey's multiple biker series, Lisa Kleypas' Travises series, Ilona Andrew's Kate Daniels series... And I absolutely went bonkers on Theodora Taylor's backlist, reading 28 of her books. I read two books over 700 pages each, and both were biker romance novels. I picked up the Gunnie Rose series by Charlaine Harris and gave up on Lauren Gilley's Dartmoor series about 3/4ths of the way through.
I also bought a lot of books I didn't read. My unread bookshelf is almost full-- five whole rows of books I purchased with my hard earned monies, and then shelved and never picked up again. Buying books gives me such pleasure. So does reading them. But I feel a little overwhelmed by the amount of unread books in my posession. It's intimidating, the sheer number of good looking books out there in the world that I'd like to read. I've intimidated myself.
I read way more 5 star books in 2022, almost twice as much as this year's paltry selection. But I also scored more books with 4 stars than last year-- I think I was feeling generous after I found out that Amazon consider's a 3 star review to be negative. Now, Amazon can suck it, but there's also the impact to the author to consider. So I started rounding up. Grade inflation, hahaha.
It's certainly been interesting. Last year, I didn't make my goal number of books and felt really let down by that. This year, I struggled to read at all for weeks at a time, or I drowned myself in books. But I made my goal. That's not nothing.
The Empress's sentence (Part - 2)
(Part-1)
I rose, trembling with fear still not daring to look up.
"I Apologise for any misdeed I have done, I will repent for my mistakes, I will serve you for as long as would please you, I will do anything, please please, forgive me!" I kept repeating this like a parrot, hoping against all hope that my inevitable fate didn't come to pass.
"The Grain that had been delivered by you to feed our soldiers was tainted, having consumed it, all of them are suffering because of the poison in their bodies and several of them have been found dead" the same voice said in a regal manner not once giving away even a sliver of emotion, was it hatred, was it indifference I couldn't tell.
"What? I- I would never do something of that sort, Your Highness, It must have been someone else, I had checked every single gunny before sending it in, it has never- never happened in the many years I have been providing for our men!" I pleaded, manic fear burrowing it's way through my body.
"You have the arrogance to imply that someone that I have entrusted with supplying the grain, is a mole?t" She merely raised an eyebrow
"No- that's not what- I meant" I realized my mistake a few moments too late.
"You are quite insolent it seems," she sighed "-I give you two choices. I could either send you to the Alerina or I could throw you to Orias"
There was this word that my father had once said while we were both playing chess "Zugzwang" When I heard it I laughed out loud, what kind of word was that? it meant "A situation in which a player is forced to make a disadvantageous move", now that I was the player and I had to make a choice, a choice which now that I look back I wonder, if I had chosen differently what the consequences would have been.
"Please Your Grace, give me one more chance, This will never happen again, please, please" I could stand no longer, my knees buckled underneath and I crashed to the floor still muttering apologies.
"Alerina or Orias" she repeated, more firmly this time.
All my life's work, everything, had come to this, to this decision. Whatever I chose would decide what happened to me.
I thought about going to The Alerina and a shiver went down my spine, a chill settled into my chest, my only other choice was Orias, the beast, It was terrifying to think about, what would become of me. I'd seen bodies disposed off into the river, mangled flesh, rotting bodies and most of all the smell, oh, the smell was horrendous and it settled under your skin like an irremovable layer of animal fat. Was it really better than going to the Alerina, I wouldn't know...
"I- I choose to go to Orias" I couldn't stop myself from choking halfway,
At that moment I could have never guessed what would happen next...
@from-across-the-stars asked:  Gundham approaches the princess with intent, a man on a mission with a hard glint in his eyes as he comes to a stop before her with a flutter of fabric behind him. "I have...a proposition for you, my dark queen. You said once before you do not wish a shield, yes? That you wished to protect yourself, and not rely on others? I know you hold skill in the arts of blackpowder and steel, but what of more primitive combat? One is more likely to engage in a battle of fists than much else in this accursed world, after all." Something Gundham seemed to know all to well... //sorry saw you wanting a thread where someone teaches sonia to punch and gunnie is more than happy to help uwu
Unprompted IC asks - Accepting from mutuals!
For a moment, Sonia thought her fatigue had her hallucinating: since when did Gundham Tanaka use the gym at Hope's Peak?
In her case, it was much more obvious: beyond keeping her mind sharp and her etiquette polished, the Princess of Novoselic was also required to remain fit and in shape. One, to counter all of the fried and sweet foods she enjoyed, even more now that she'd come to study in Japan (tempura! karaage! Every themed café she found the time to try!). And two, because royal protocol demanded it. Every member of the family needed to set an example for the nation, and that included maintaining a level of health and fitness to help defend the country if necessary and stave off infirmities brought on by laziness and obesity.
Still, she hit the stop button on the treadmill once she was sure she'd spotted him. The weather hadn't cooperated that day so taking her run outside was out of the question, so Sonia had resorted to the treadmill, running for as long and hard as she could. That is, until Gundham had sauntered in, just when she thought she'd had that particular gym to herself. And for good reason: Sonia didn't let anyone see her in her current state. High-waisted leggings, a crop top, her blonde hair clumsily thrown into a high ponytail with a few pale strands sticking to her forehead, and her face flushed a deep rose from the exertion of her exercise. It wasn't exactly very becoming of a princess to look so disheveled and breathless. A military uniform would be acceptable...but not this.
And curse her if she wanted her friends, she wanted him, to see a certain image she wanted to portray. Someone who was capable and didn't show fear, for example.
Tumblr media
"Th-that's correct," She panted, attempting to breathe steadily as she stepped off the machine. Reaching for a white hand towel draped over one of the supports, she dabbed at the sweat on her cheeks, nose, and forehead. She could do that much: not drip sweat all over him. "I prefer to protect myself when able. Though it's said that it is inappropriate for a princess to participate in fisticuffs: guns are acceptable, though. They are both a military necessity and a gaming pursuit."
And it was an easy way to explain the various weapons stashed about her dormitory at Hope's Peak, her elegant bedchamber in Novoselic Castle...and pretty much every living space owned and occupied by the Royal Family. If anyone tried to break in, Sonia was merely seconds from grabbing a pistol secured behind a headboard or beneath a bed frame, and that didn't include the guns stowed away in various, far more hidden enclosures. Or the designated weapons closet her dorm had been outfitted with before moving in: a Novoselic requirement the school had no choice but to allow.
It didn't make for the friendliest conversation topics, Sonia thought, so she'd omitted it in favor of her occult interests and Gundham's animals. Far more appropriate, she'd decided, than her vast amount and proficiency with various things that could be shot or exploded.
"I'm not sure if I'm more likely to encounter a firearm or more...primitive combat, as you call it," She admitted, brushing some of the flyaway hairs out of her forehead. They plastered themselves to the rest of her haphazard updo. "What exactly did you have in mind, Tanaka-san? Do you possess combat skills I have yet to discover?" Hesitancy had been replaced by Sonia's far more typical traits: intrigue and curiosity. Two things she had in abundance, especially when Gundham was concerned.
👪 i mean yuki's already met gundham's mum but he'll always take more of her if u will oblige--
Send “👪” to meet my muse’s parents. (X)
Gundham was lucky he managed to even keep Yuki the in car on the way to his mothers, the halfblood rather surprised he hadn't jumped out the minute the tires had hit the small dirt road trailing up to the little cottage. When the angel didn't come greet them as he parked his car, Gundham knew that meant she was out back of the house, leading Yuki around the side to the vast garden of the backyard.
Knelt down by one of the many flowerbeds was his mother, whistling a little tune to the birds at the feeder over head, a few even echoing it back if they liked the notes. Giving a soft smile at this, Gundham mimicked her latest few notes back with a whistle of his own, the angel perking up at the sound and turning to him with a grin that could rival the sun itself. "Gunnie! Oh, I was wondering when you would arrive!" She said as she rose from the grass, setting her small trowel to the side and brushing the dirt from her clothes.
"Greetings mother, I trust the day is treating you well?" He asked as she wrapped her arms about her son's neck, Gundham having to bend down quite a bit in order for her to reach. "Aside from that pesky squirrel digging up my bulbs, yes. You will have to have a word with him." Gundham just gave a small laugh, pulling a twig from his mother's hair. "I will do what I can. But you know he is not keen on listening."
His mother just gave a small huff as she turned to greet Yuki, not one of completely annoyance, just a simple sound to fill the gaps in conversation. "I know, dear, but it couldn't hurt to speak with him again." Hands squishing at Yuki's cheeks, she turned her full attention to the kitsune now, turning his head this way and that as if to inspect him. "How is my sweet little fox, hm? Has Gunnie been feeding you enough?" Then, in a lower voice. "Have you been getting along with Kazuichi? I heard what happened..." Then a pause as she looked about. "Where is your little mechanic friend? I thought he was to fix my oven?"
Gundham gave a nervous little laugh at that, head turning to the side with a smirk that he barely tried to hide. "He will be along, at the moment he is-" The halfblood didn't get to finish, Kazuichi choosing that moment to come around the house looking like death itself. "Dying." He wailed dramatically, one arm hugging his stomach, the other carrying a box of tools. "Your son is trying to freakin' kill me." Gundham just scoffed, arms coming to cross his chest with a shake of his head. "It is not the fault of mine that you are cursed with motion sickness. I offered the front seat, you did not take it, so now you must suffer."
Kaz just whined, shooting a pout Gundham's way as he stopped several feet away from the three. "I was being nice and letting Yuki have it!" Mostly because the newly minted werewolf was trying to stay in the kitsune's good graces, but it was proving more and more a lost cause as time went on...
The angel watched them bicker with a fond huff, one hand on Yuki’s cheek while the other rested on his shoulder. “Boys, please.” Was all it took to have the two cowering in on themselves, Kaz more than Gundham, as they muttered an apology. “Gunnie, take Kazuichi inside and fix him some tea for his stomach, will you? And don’t ‘mix up’ the salt and sugar this time or I will be having you try each and every one of my entries for the community bake sale this weekend.” It’s said with a sickeningly sweet smile, one that had horror spreading across her son’s face before he hid it in his scarf, the man knowing very well it could take dozens of tries before something she made was deemed edible. “...Yes mother...” He said with a motion for Kazuichi follow, the poor mechanic much slower in his movements than he usually would be as his stomach churned.
“Now,” The angel said turning to Yuki, both hands clapping his shoulders now. “Would you like to tell me just what the issue is, or will I have to bribe you with the gift I have waiting for you inside?” She already knew the answer, of course, or else the gift wouldn’t have been brought up in the first place. For an angel, she was pretty crafty in her ways...
House Isekai: A Realm Reborn Act 1 Finale - Part 8, A Realm Awoken
House Isekai ARR Masterlist Here
Tumblr media
Sitri's group returns from their tasks as Aigis and the Auxiliary members investigate Fhirdiad.
Meanwhile, Rean, Towa, and Class VII investigate the final disturbance reported by Dimitri...
[Nobility Obliges - Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward OST]
Nighttime, Fhirdiad...
Aigis wandered through the upper streets of Fhirdiad with Mercedes guiding her.
The houses Aigis saw were grand, ornated with golden trims with blue flags hanging on their doors, each displaying a different symbol.
(Mercedes) "We are in the Noble's District of the city, it's quite nice here. Though I don't come here too often."
(Aigis) "Strange, I thought you were a noble."
(Mercedes) "While technically I am, I just prefer to be down where the rest of the commoners are, helping with whatever charity I could. Hard times fell on us during the war..."
(Aigis) "I can only imagine."
(Mercedes) "Though, Enbarr had gone through worse...Maybe that's why Edelgard did what she did, we were lucky that our city hadn't been sieged."
(Aigis) "..."
Mercedes stopped walking and smiled to herself.
(Mercedes) "Ah, finally! Here we are Aigis."
Aigis looked up at the Mansion they were in front of. The flag's symbol displayed a shield with a knight riding a horse, all in white.
(Aigis) "Is this one of the Blue Lion's House?"
(Mercedes) "Technically speaking, yes!"
Knocking on the door, Mercedes bowed when it opened, being greeted by a steward. He returned the bow and smiled.
(Steward) "Lady Mercedes, to what do we owe the pleasure?"
(Mercedes) "We have just come to inform you that Elizabeth is returning home for a brief time, her class is here on official business."
(Steward) "Lady Elizabeth is in the city?"
(Mercedes) "She will once she returns from her mission with Lady Sitri. We just wanted to let you know in advance to roll out the welcoming wagon!"
(Steward) "Hah, and that we shall! Her mother will be greatly pleased, if you'll excuse me. Oh, and thank you for letting us know!"
With one final bow, the Steward closed the door and left Mercedes and Aigis alone again.
(Aigis) "Elizabeth's parents are here?"
(Mercedes) "Yes, her house is one of many that rose to prominence when the war ended. I'd love to tell you more about her, but I think Elizabeth would prefer to tell us herself."
Making their way for the castle, Aigis put a finger to her chin.
(Aigis) "...Now that I think on it, the students have been rather reserved during our time here."
(Mercedes) "That makes sense, you all have only been here for about 2 weeks. Even we weren't the best of friends by then."
(Aigis) "Good point."
(Mercedes) "By the way, did Buck and the others ever mention why they needed to go to the castle first?"
...
(Fhirdiad Soldier) "No sir, I've never seen anything like that."
(Buck) "Hm, thanks."
Buck sighed, his helmet muting most of the sound as he turned around.
He holstered his assault rifle, shaking his head to Mickey.
(Mickey) "We don't have anything either, Gunny."
The ODST's were showing their weapons to the knights, hoping for some indication of where the rifle from the Separatist Camp came from.
Raelyn and Duvalie walked back to the group, not faring any better.
(Raelyn) "I'm afraid the soldiers here know nothing. Or at least, they're pretending not to."
(Duvalie) "Doubt we were going to get any results from this anyway."
(Dutch) "Never hurt to try. Not like we got much else to do while we wait and twiddle with our thumbs."
(Romeo) "The sooner we can get our asses out of the cold, the better."
(Mickey) "These knights carry themselves pretty differently from everyone else we've seen."
The group turned their attention to the squads of soldiers patrolling the castle grounds, some with Knights accompanying them.
(Buck) "Now that you mentioned it, they got a lot more of those walking robots than everywhere we've been to."
(Raelyn) "Perhaps their situation faces more combat than the other two nations."
(Duvalie) "Or they're trying to keep their people in line."
(Romeo) "Didn't seem like the people were too bothered on the way up here."
(Dutch) "We also don't know the situation of this country either. But anyways Gunny, what's our next course of action?"
(Buck) "Hm, guess we can head back to the-"
Buck cut himself off when he saw a group of Pegasuses fly in with Wyverns.
...And a UNSC Warthog?
Seeing a Warthog and Mongoose in tow caught the ODST's attention, making them follow where they were landing, which was into a hangar.
Sitri stepped off the back with the help of Stefan and Elizabeth. Kairos, Astrid, and Helena were helped down by Forte and Lest.
Sarge, Grif, Simmons, and Tucker jumped out their vehicles and noticed the ODST's staring right at them.
(Romeo) "Spartans?!"
(Sarge) "What in sam hill, ODST's!?"
(Simmons) "...Did they just call us Spartans?"
Dedue and Ingrid hopped off their mounts and looked at Sitri.
(Dedue) "I will report our findings to King Dimitri immediately."
(Ingrid) "As should I. You all should probably get some rest, until then House Isekai."
Both of them saluted before walking off, giving time for everyone to talk to each other.
(Lest) "Are you guys part of Fodlan?"
(Raelyn) "We are not. I presume you are not either."
The ODST's visors turned off so that everyone could see their face, Raelyn took off his helmet.
Everyone took a moment to introduce themselves.
(Buck) "...Reds and Blues? Can't say we ever heard of you guys."
(Sarge) "Heh, not yet anyways! But it's good to see fellow ODST's fighting the good fight!"
(Dutch) "You're an ODST too?"
(Sarge) "Sure was, but anyways, what's the status in Fodlan? Me and my boys, plus the dirty blue, came to help out!"
(Lest) "As did me and Forte! We picked up some of the students while we were escaping, do you know them?"
Only now did the Auxiliary realize some of the Garreg Mach students were injured, including Sitri.
(Romeo) "Oh shit, what happened to the kids?"
They all walked over to the group who were taking a moment to breathe. Helena was heavily injured while Sitri was still unconscious. Astrid had a bandage on her arm while Kairos, Stefan, and Elizabeth were mostly unscathed.
Sitri was carried off by a three medics carrying a stretcher, taking her to the castle.
(Raelyn) "I take it the mission had some problems."
(Helena) "Ow...Yeah, something like that."
One of the medics approached the group.
(Medic) "We were ordered by Dedue to make sure you two receive proper medical treatment as well."
(Astrid) "Hey, can you three explain what happened to them?"
(Elizabeth) "Of course, now please rest up!"
After they left, Elizabeth cleared her throat.
(Elizabeth) "We completed our mission, but we did meet Doctor Valda."
Buck examined the group again, then turned back to her.
(Buck) "She gone rogue?"
(Stefan) "Yes, I'm afraid. She is working for the Separatists."
(Kairos) "She mentioned something that's been bothering me. Apparently her higherups decided to launch the Crimson Weapon without her go ahead, and it seems they're doing the same for the others."
(Lest) "E-Excuse me, what's the Crimson Weapon? And Separatists?"
(Tucker) "Yeah none of this shit was even here last time we were. ESPECIALLY all the high tech stuff."
(Kairos) "You were with House Isekai?"
(Simmons) "No, we were just here with Byleth during the war."
(Raelyn) "From my understanding, House Isekai was a major factor in ending the war, along with this 'Byleth'. How do you not know of them?"
(Duvalie) "We're going in circles, it's clear they don't have any idea what we're talking about!"
(Grif) "That's an understatement..."
(Lest) "Perhaps we should go to Byleth to have him explain this. Where is he anyway?"
(Elizabeth) "Um...I'm afraid we can't really answer that, though I think Professor Aigis can. Actually, where is she? She and Mercedes were supposed to be with you."
(Dutch) "The two mentioned going to the residential district, they should be on their way to the castle now."
(Forte) "Perhaps it'd be best if we did the same."
Everyone nodded in agreement, Elizabeth leading the way to the interior.
Gautier Territory...
[Spiderweb - Fire Emblem: Three Houses OST]
Rean looked around the forest as he and the rest of Class VII left a trail of footprints in the snow.
They had arrived in Gautier territory about an hour ago, the train ride here only taking about two.
The advancement of technology in Fodlan still hadn't ceased to amaze, considering when they were last here everything was still in a medieval era.
Keeping his mind back to the present, Rean turned to look at his Class. Juna and Kurt were taken aback by the environment, Altina, Musse, and Ash being a little less impressed.
Annette led their group towards the location of the strange entity, spellbook on her waist.
Annette was a bit nervous. She tried her best to describe what the entity's appearance was to Class VII on the ride here, but truthfully no one knew. They definitely saw it, but as to what it was, no one knew how to even describe it.
It's as if leaving the area caused their memory to falter, as if it was covered in a haze of some kind.
(Altina) "...Movement ahead detected!"
Everyone stopped to draw their weapons out.
(Ash) "Alright, let's see what's kinda trouble this is going to be!"
(Juna) "...H-Hey, are you alright Miss Annette?"
Annette reached for her head as she staggered back, unable to continue standing.
Before she fell, Towa and Musse rushed over to grab her, making everyone run in front.
(Rean) "Get ready!"
(Altina) "Understood!"
Everyone saw movement in the trees as snow began to lightly blow away.
An orb revealed itself as it hovered above the ground, the snow gently flying away.
It appeared to be glowing blue, almost the same color as all the crystals from the Zanado Tower.
The biggest piece portruding to what they could only assume was the front turned to the group and flashed twice, projecting an aura around the group.
(Juna) "T-The heck, is it attacking?"
Everyone examined themselves and it didn't appear anything was happening. Annette stood back up and shook her head frustratingly.
(Annette) "Ugh, goddess my head's so...full!"
Rean and Towa slowly felt a pulsing headache grow exponentially larger, voices in the distance suddenly appearing.
(Kurt) "Instructor?!"
(Towa) "I-It's so loud!"
(Ash) "The hell is she talking about, I don't hear anything!"
(Juna) "I-I don't hear anything either...!"
BEEP BEEP!
[More Than Truth - Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers OST]
(Orb) "Source signals detected! Thank goodness, I was beginning to believe no one would ever appear, we have much to do!"
When the orb spoke, suddenly Annette, Rean, and Towa could think clearly again, the voices all being silenced at once.
(Ash) "Wait, this floating ball can talk?"
The orb suddenly flew in Ash's face, clearly not amused.
(Orb) "I am not a 'thing'! I am Recorder 247B! And I have been waiting a VERY long time for anyone from the source to find me!"
(Annette) "Agh, what were those voices?"
It floated over to Annette, talking excitedly.
(Orb) "Scans to determine whether or not you were from the source, obviously. Debilitating, yes, but effective! They play from your past memories, and if you showed signs of fatigue, then that means you are!"
(Musse) "You were here waiting for someone?"
(Orb) "Yes, so very long! In fact, it has been 10 loops since I have last spoken to another being!"
(Rean) "Just stop for a second!"
It floated over to Rean now.
(Orb) "Is something the matter, Mister Rean?"
(Rean) "We don't know what you are, why you're here, and more importantly, what you did to the soldiers previously sent here to investigate."
(Orb) "Simple, memory erasure! I could not risk being discovered by a hostile group, so I clouded their memory enough to where they could continue their lives, but forget what I am!"
(Towa) "That explains why no one could give a concrete report..."
(Juna) "Guess our job is done...Not gonna lie, that was a bit anti-climactic."
(Kurt) "So why were you waiting here for Instructor Rean and Towa?"
(Orb) "Not specifically them, but for anyone from the source!"
(Ash) "You keep saying 'source' the hell does that mean?"
The orb floated over much more aggressively at Ash.
(Orb) "There is no need for such foul language! You sir have the elegance of a brute!"
(Musse) snrk!
(Ash) "Get outta my face!"
Shoving it away, the Orb floated back towards the front of the group.
(Orb) "To answer your question, the 'source' originates to anyone from the original time. Technically, only Miss Annette here is from the source, and Mister Rean and Miss Towa are from a 'Loop'!"
(Towa) "...H-Hang on a moment. When you say loop, do you mean-"
(Orb) "I mean when a group had visited Byleth and the Creator! Class VII specifically was Loop 2."
Rean, Towa, and Annette's eyes widened. This Orb had been alive for quite some time now.
(Annette) "Well, we're here now. What's the problem?"
(Orb) "The Zanado Tower has been springing up into other worlds ever since Loop 4! Containment protocol dictates we must hurry and destroy them! "
(Rean, Towa, Annette) !!!
(Orb) "Now that contact has been established, I can go ahead and disable the limitation on travelling and we can begin our tasks jumping into the other worlds!"
(Annette) "D-Does that mean the Tower is in your guys world?"
(Towa) "Not just us, but that means-"
(Rean) "Everyone else's too!"
(Musse) "We need to get back to Fhirdiad and tell this to the House!"
(Orb) "Not to worry, please follow me!"
The Orb began glowing once again before a portal tore open in front of them, showing House Isekai sitting at a meeting room.
(Buck) "WOAH!"
(Elizabeth) "GODDESS!"
(Sarge) "GAH! NOT ANOTHER PORTAL!"
(Lest) "N-Never gonna get used to that..."
(Aigis) "Rean?!"
(Orb) "Marvelous! More people to help!...Oh, I believe someone is trying to call us."
...
(VEGA) “We could attempt to teleport you to the source of the anomaly although the danger is quite high.”
Sara and Sharon exchanged looks before nodding.
(Sharon) “We are willing to accept the risks.”
Doomguy nodded and went over to the console as VEGA spoke.
(Vega) “Then we all bid you good luck.”
Sara and Sharon walked over to the platform as all the Persona Users stood up in anticipation.
(Sara) “Come on, what’s the worst that could happen?”
As Doomguy was about to press the button, a blue portal suddenly tore itself into reality, silencing everyone.
(Aqua) “What the hell is all…this?”
(Ainz) “Oh.”
(Darkness) “…H-Hello everyone.”
Cocytus and Narberal looked at each other and shrugged.
(Sharon) “…I believe this only opens up more questions.”
(VEGA) "ALERT! Signals coming through from House Isekai!"
Everyone stood up in surprise, Doomguy rushing over to the communications center.
(Sara) "Hello, can anyone hear us?"
[Rean's Voice] "Instructor Sara?"
[Towa's Voice] "Oh my gosh, we can finally call you guys!"
[Kazuma's Voice] ...muttering.. "AH! THERE'S THE GODDAMN SPEAKER-...Er, uh hi. Yes, this is Kazuma. Sorry 'bout that, flying back on a Dragon."
[Venti's Voice] "Wyvern!"
[Kazuma's Voice] "SHUT UP!"
[Aigis's Voice] "We read you."
Everyone seemed relieved at hearing their voices.
Aqua, Cocytus, Darkness, Narberal, and Ainz stepped through the portal as it closed behind them, getting into the conversation.
(VEGA) "We have been attempting to get into contact with you for the past week. Has Class VII and the Persona Users completed their task?"
[Rean's Voice] "Well, we met up with Laura, Elliot, and Fie, but we haven't seen the Persona Users at all..."
(Akira) "You...You haven't? It was Ann, Ryuji, Mitsuru, and Naoto. Nothing at all?"
[Kazuma's Voice] "Nope, nothing."
[Aigis's Voice] "I was unaware that others had even arrived."
The Persona Users looked at each other nervously.
(Ainz) "Anyways, what's going on in Fodlan, is Sitri and the others alright?"
The explanation began by telling everyone about the Separatist situation in Fodlan, noting the mission Sitri and the Garreg Mach students had undertaken, by Rean, Towa, Kazuma, and Aigis.
Next, it began reporting the remnants of Those Who Slither and the Church by Annette, and the troubles they had been causing.
And Rean and Towa told the group about the orb, and it quickly chimed in.
[247B's Voice] "Ah, all the Loop signals are a sight for sore sensors! I am Recorder 247B, and we have much work to do! Towers are all in your worlds!"
Everyone tensed up.
(Darkness) "What?!"
(Orb) "Not only that, people from Loops not even related to your group has begun appearing, meaning this situation is more dire than anticipated!"
[Lest's Voice] "...I think that it means us..."
[Grif's Voice] "Ah bullshit, we were here before anyone else was! Probably..."
[247B's Voice] "Not incorrect, but we must begin immediately!"
Everyone remained silent, not sure what to do. The situation was far more complicated than anyone could possibly have imagined.
[247B's Voice] "Disabling the final limiter now, everyone should now be able to travel freely!"
...
The orb began glowing a bright blue, before the entire room began to shake.
(Tucker) "The fuck, this some kinda earthquake?!"
(Kairos) "The timing seems a bit too perfect, don't you think?!"
Fhirdiad shook violently, everyone surprised by the sudden earthquake.
...
Kazuma, Ashe, and the Knights of Favonius saw the trees shake.
(Jean) "What's going on?!"
(Amber) "Holy crap, over there! Something's glowing!"
They all turned to their left as a giant piercing beam in the sky shot into the heavens.
(Kazuma) "The Zanado Tower...!"
...
Laura, Fie, Elliot, and the creature accompanying them tried to hang onto something as the entire tower shook violently, throwing them onto the ground.
(Elliot) "GWAH?!"
(Laura) "HANG ON!"
Laura grabbed Elliot, while Fie grabbed onto the edge of a crystal with her arm on the creature's, all of them beginning to slide down as the platform broke.
(Fie) "BELOW US!"
A portal opened up and swallowed the four as they screamed and disappeared.
...
(Ryuji) "HOLY SHIT, EARTHQUAKE!"
Naoto held firmly onto the machine's eye while Ann, Ryuji, and Mitsuru tried to avoid the bits of metal flying everywhere as the Orks panicked from the tower shaking.
(Gravestompah) "DA ZOG IS GOIN' ON?!"
...
(Valda) "What in the world...?"
Doctor Valda looked mildly irritated as her room shook, her Commando Droids looking around for intruders, weapons out.
Signals on her crystal began going off as she pulled out, a small smirk growing.
(Valda) "Finally, some good news for a change."
...
The room displayed massive crystals that showed reflections of House Isekai and their reactions to the tower moving.
Although it was heavily distorted and any normal person would be barely able to hear what was being said, the figure watching had no such difficulty.
"CONTACT ESTABLISHED, LIMITERS REMOVED."
The figure put its hand onto the floor as the room opened up, the skies shimmering a glowing green as it began to activate.
WOTN: A Longer Fall by Charlaine Harris
A Tale Worth Reading in A Longer Fall A Longer Fall is the second novel in Charlaine Harris’ Gunnie Rose series, and it carries just as much impact as the first. Gunnie Rose is an alternate history, set during the Great Depression – but with several fundamental changes. Most notably, the inclusion of magic. Picture a classic western full of gunslingers and the like, and then throw in a dash of…
Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Serpent in Heaven by @realcharlaine https://amzn.to/3tLjlcx As always Ms. Harris doesn't disappoint. In this new Gunnie Rose edition we get to see more of Felicia, Lizbeth's half-sister, adventures. And it seems as if danger and trouble follow her wherever she goes. In this book Felicia is at the school for Grigori in the Holy Russian Empire in San Diego. Even though she is in the schools she is not participating in the studies to become a Grigori. She desperately wants to though. But for now she is just grateful to have a warm bed, clothes to wear and food to eat. Which was rare when she lived with her dad and lastly her uncle. But the calm and peace that has settled over her will not last long as she is kidnapped and must survive. Felicia never knew how hard it would be to fit in and now she is just trying to stay alive. There is danger around every corner and so many key people at play. This book is full of danger and twisted plots. Felicia's life is full of adventure and discoveries. Even though Lizbeth is not in this book, Ms. Harris has created the same type of atmosphere for her half-sister. The story is very intriguing and unique in every way. We still get to experience the characters from previous books, such as Felix and Peter. So be sure to read these in order, because these books are not standalone stories. Each one has an interconnecting plot, which if not read in order will confuse readers. I cannot wait to see what adventures lie in store for the new world characters. #newbookrelease #bookreviews #tbr #charlaineharris #gunnierose #bookstagramers https://www.instagram.com/p/ClM3g5tr6QR/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
The Serpent in Heaven by Charlaine Harris
4.5 out of 5.
Gunnie Rose 4
A Netgalley ARC, courtesy of Simon & Schuster, with an anticipated publication date of November 15, 2022.
Picking up immediately after THE RUSSIAN CAGE, Felicia Karkarova is enjoying her lessons at the Rasputin School, a boarding school for budding Grigoris, even if she isn't allowed to take any of the magic lessons. Of course that is partly due to her keeping her magic abilities a secret. Despite revealing them during the attack on the Savarov mansion, word hasn't apparently made it to the Head Mistress or any of the teachers.
Then Felicia is kidnapped while on her way to the Savarovs for dinner. While she manages to escape, another attempt is made before she can make it safely back to the school. This is followed by an attack on the school that ends in Felicia killing the two intruders who have no care for the flu-ridden children and caregivers in the area. It reveals just how strong a magic user the young teen actually could be.
Who is after Felicia? There is no family left other than Lizbeth and Eli, but they couldn't possibly afford to ransom her back. So what is the point? As the danger arises, long hidden secrets about Felicia's maternal history is revealed.
I've been a fan of this series from the start, so I was beyond delighted to be approved to receive this ARC. I've been equally fascinated by Felicia as a potentially strong character and here she really shines. It may be blasphemy, but I think I'd rather follow her adventures in the New Holy Russian Empire than tag along with Lizbeth and Eli. Well, possibly because I'd worry about what Harris might have in mind for the couple.
While a few scenes didn't make sense to me, even if I enjoyed them. I believe some were meant to describe the difference between the magic of Russian Grigoris and Mexican witches. We'll see, I guess.
As I'm a character-driven reader, having strong characters with realistic human failings and strengths is a big plus for me, certain to pull me deep into the book. The ending was satisfying, but left enough threads to keep me eager for the next installment. I really look forward to the future of this series, although the author may have to change the series name!
