"We're two different types of people, Liam. He likes sex and drugs, I like theater and tea. Trust me, we'd never date." Except they would, they do, and neither of them plans on letting go anytime soon.
"Just because you can get me hard doesn't mean I like you," Louis whispered. The fact was, he didn't like Harry right now, not at all. Not even a bit.
"Yeah, yeah," Harry murmured, his breath fanning over Louis' cock as he spoke. "You done telling me how much you hate me so I can suck you off?"

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Louis says, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms over his chest. In the center of the table, a set of three glossy photos stares up at him, mocking him.
“A security detail is non-negotiable, Louis, you know this,” his mum reminds him, tapping the middle photo with two fingers.
Louis doesn’t look back down at the pictures, gesturing towards them wildly, over-dramatically. “This is not a security detail!” he protests. “This is a lanky college student. In what world do you hire someone like this kid to protect me?”
damn your love, damn your lies by ifthat
“Of course you’d use your free time to go to the gym.”
“Your idea of the best way to spend your free time is annoying your neighbors,” he laughs, dimples carved into his cheeks like marble.
No, Louis likes to annoy Harry. Everyone else on this floor is just an unfortunate casualty.
“No one has complained except for you,” Louis informs him smartly. Which is actually a good thing. If someone other than Harry had complained to him long ago, he would have unfortunately had to stop.

Harry's just finished his first year of uni on his way to becoming Dr. Harry Styles, Neurosurgeon. He's young, he has endless potential, three amazing best mates, a new love and the world at his fingertips. The fact that his new boyfriend may or may not be a sex-worker, of course, throws a wrench into the works. But it's not true. Really.
Probably.
It most definitely might not be entirely true. And that's all Harry needs to know.
escapade (i was late to the game shut up) by dolce_piccante
In the grand scheme of things, finding a date for a wedding should be no problem for Louis Tomlinson. He's rich. He's handsome. He's reasonably well behaved. But when the wedding is for his lifelong best friend (and former boyfriend), and is happening in under a month, finding a date for the ceremony and accompanying festivities becomes more of an adventure than he ever could have planned for.

American Uni AU. Harry Styles is a frat boy football star from the wealthy Styles Family athletic dynasty. A celebrity among football fans, he knows how to play, he knows how to party, and he knows how to fuck (all of which is well known among his legion of admirers).
Louis Tomlinson is a student and an athlete, but his similarities to Harry end there. Intelligent, focused, independent, and completely uninterested in Harry’s charms, Louis is an anomaly in a world ruled by football.
A bet about the pair, who might be more similar than they originally thought, brings them together. Shakespeare, ballet, Disney, football, library chats, running, accidental spooning, Daredevil and Domino’s Pizza all blend into one big friendship Frappucino, but who will win in the end?

The only reason he’s here is because it’s tradition. And also, Harry said it’d be fun to make Liam wet himself in fear and Louis agreed. It’ll be hilarious. He’s not an insecure new transfer anymore, thank you very much. It took him no more than a week to insert himself into a group, to get invited to his first party, and to start crushing on someone—he’s not what anyone would call socially impaired. He doesn’t need validation.
have you coming back again by whoknows
It’s five o’clock in the morning. Louis has a lecture at half eight. He could be using this time to study or to do his readings or to go to the gym, but - well. He doesn’t have any exams coming up, he’s not going to his seminar today anyway and he hates the gym.
Instead he’s using this time to fuck with Harry Styles’ poor little brain.
Louis jogs across the street and jabs the key into the car door. It opens easily, not that he was expecting anything else. He copied the key for a reason, after all.
He’s got Harry’s schedule memorized, more because the guy keeps following him around than anything, so he doesn’t bother looking around before climbing behind the wheel and setting his bag on the passenger seat. It’s a Monday, which means that Harry doesn’t even get out of bed before noon unless he’s planning on harassing Louis.

Louis hasn’t even seen his legs yet. He doesn’t know how they work or how long they’ll be. Maybe they won’t suit the rest of Harry at all, and he’ll have to grow into them or something. It doesn’t matter; Louis has loved Harry for a year with scales, so he can’t imagine wonky legs putting a damper on his attraction.
He supposes he’ll just have to find out. In the meantime, he wonders how the fuck he got here, in his squelching wellies about to save the love of his life from the sea and take him to bed and bang him for the very first time.

“What about this, Captain?” Liam asks, nudging the boy kneeling between their feet with the toe of his boot. The boy hisses and swipes at him, slurring out something unintelligible around the makeshift gag Niall had to stuff in his mouth. He misses by a mile and tries again, just as ineffectively.
Harry looks down at him, at the way the sun streams over his face and shoulders, at the way the gag stretches his mouth, lips pink and chapped. He’s lithe and pretty, smudged all over with dirt. They had found him tied up below deck, mostly unconscious, next to a barrel full of gold. He’s clearly a prisoner, but there’s something familiar about him, something that niggles at Harry’s brain. Something he can’t quite put his finger on.
“Put him in my cabin,” Harry decides, turning back to deal with the rest of the loot. The boys screams out jumbled curse words at Harry’s back, muffled by the gag, and Harry can’t understand any of it.

Because what the actual fuck. It kind of looks like Niall’s just purchased a person. For Harry.
Niall blinks back at him for a few moments, before throwing his head back and howling with laughter. Harry throws a pillow at him. Hard. “No, what the fuck, Harry.”
“A prostitute then?” Harry also doesn't want a prostitute.
“Of course not!”
“A stripper?”
“No!”
Damn, he’s running out of ideas. He settles for launching another pillow at Niall’s head. Niall bats it away easily, still laughing. “Stop!”
“What did you get me, then?!” Niall must hear the tinge of hysteria in his voice, because he’s pulling himself together, trying to stop himself from laughing.

“Ninety and rising,” Nick says triumphantly, as though making Harry’s heartbeat pick up by thrusting an obscenely attractive person in front of his face is any kind of success. “Louis Tomlinson has just walked into our control room and suddenly our dear Harry Styles has lost all ability to speak. Could this be some kind of strange coincidence?”
“I hate you,” Harry hisses, forcing his eyes back into Nick’s direction, uncaring that the mic must have picked it up. “I thought we agreed that you were going to play fair.”
“I’m sure I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Nick denies, except he’s holding up a picture of Louis’ face now, sharp cheekbones prominent, soft lashes nearly sweeping against his cheeks as he looks down, and his fucking mouth –
“A hundred and two!” Nick crows, all but clapping his hands together in glee. “The highest it’s ever been!”
“To be fair, I did bend over the desk on purpose,” Louis’ voice comes crackling in the headphones. Harry practically breaks his neck whipping his head around at the sound of it, gaping at him through the glass panel. “You can’t really blame him for getting a little excited about that, can you?”

karen runs.
(for the lovely @thestarsbeyondthestorms and @edourado, who requested ‘things you said with too many miles between us’ and ‘things you said on the phone at 4am’. UH THIS PROMPT COMBO. RIP ME. also posted on ao3.)
She’s had a bag packed since Fisk moved out of prison and into the penthouse. All she has to do is use it.
.
.
There are flowers, on the kitchen table. White roses. Not the ones he’d given her, but they may as well be. She can’t buy flowers anymore without thinking of him.
They catch her eye as she’s hugging Foggy, and she feels the breath leave her lungs, swooping out in the space between heartbeats. Tensile strength, she thinks. Kevin was taking AP Physics the year he died, the year she killed him. She remembers helping him study. Ultimate tensile strength, he’d recited from his flashcards, measured by the maximum amount of stress an object can withstand without breaking —
Karen leaves, and doesn’t look back.
.
.
She uses her credit card to buy a southbound bus ticket to Baltimore, hopes the paper trail will buy her a little time. Fisk and his goons have probably already started sniffing her out, but she’ll be long gone by the time they catch on.
She’s heard the Rockies are beautiful this time of year.
.
.
The plan is to lay low. The plan is to limit contact with other people, as much as possible. The plan is —
“This seat is — taken?”
Karen glances up. The woman staring down at her from the aisle reminds her sharply of Mrs. Cardenas — same toothy smile, same hopeful eyes, and Karen feels like her chest cavity has been scooped hollow.
“Uh — no,” she hears herself say. “Not taken.”
Karen left a lot behind in New York, but her inquisitive tendencies have stuck. It’s not long before she knows more than she probably should about her seatmate — Sofía Rosales, sixty-seven years young, three grandchildren with a fourth on the way. She talks with her hands and very kindly doesn’t laugh at Karen’s mangled Spanish. Karen likes her immediately, and that’s when the sirens start going off in her head, that’s when everything starts spiraling. She ruins everyone she touches, no matter her intentions, even when she tries to be kind and good, even when she tries to do the right thing it all goes wrong —
(That’s what you do, Karen. That’s what you do.)
She switches seats in the middle of the night and doesn’t talk to Mrs. Rosales again.
.
.
Karen ditched her phone before she left, but she has a few numbers memorized. Ellison, Matt, Foggy, home.
David Lieberman.
She’s not sure why his number stuck, but it’s there, burned into her hippocampus. Just one of the many details she learned about him while digging for info for Frank.
She has an hour to herself in the station in Columbus, where she’s transferring buses, so she slides into the nearest coffee shop and fidgets with the burner in her pocket, to give her hands something to do. Flips it open, then shut again. Open, shut.
She thinks of the elevator — him leaning into her, closing his eyes and aligning his breath with hers, all those unsaid things in that quiet cocoon of space — and laughs aloud.
And she sort of owes him, right? For saving her life. She owes it to him to let him know it wasn’t for nothing, that she is, in fact, still breathing.
There’s an open single seat in the very back of the new bus. She sinks into it, waits until they’re on the highway again before punching in David’s number with shaking fingers.
“Hello?”
It takes a second for her lungs to catch up with her brain. “Hello, David?” she croaks. “Is this David Lieberman?”
There’s a slight pause. “Who’s calling?”
She should hang up, now. Trash the burner, never, ever, do something this fucking stupid ever again —
“Karen?”
Every muscle in her body tenses. He sounds uncertain, but there’s something about his voice, even over the phone. Something layered beneath. Karen doesn’t know much about this guy, but he seems like the type of person who wouldn’t ask a question he doesn’t already know the answer to.
She blows out a breath. “Yes. Jesus, you’re good.”
“Holy shit. Holy— shit, it’s good to hear from you.”
“I guess you know why I’m calling, then.”
"Yeah,” David huffs out a laugh, “yeah, I have a pretty good idea. I gotta tell you, Karen, our mutual friend has been, ahh, more of a pain in the ass than usual, as of late. I’m sure you can relate.”
She’s gripping the phone so tightly her tendons are starting to burn. There’s breath somewhere in her body, right? Beneath her ribs, maybe, threaded through the struts of bone. She just has to find it. Just take a breath, Karen, just one.
“Our — friend,” she says carefully, past the lump in her trachea. “I need you to let him know that I’m okay. I’m just taking some time, away from the city. But I’m alright. If you could tell Fra —” she squeezes her eyes shut. “If you could tell him that, I would really appreciate it.”
“Karen, hey —”
“Thanks, David,” she says, and hangs up.
.
.
She’s fine.
.
.
After two nights on the bus, Karen decides she needs some actual sleep. She finds the cheapest motel she can and collapses once she’s in the room, asleep before she can even take off her coat or shoes.
She dreams about Fisk, then Kevin, and jolts awake long before the sun comes up.
There’s a pad of paper in the nightstand. You’re okay, she scribbles out, over and over.
You’re okay.
.
.
He’s never far from her thoughts. She knew she wouldn’t miss him like she misses Matt and Foggy — he exists in her mind in splinters, a kaleidoscope of sounds and images and feelings that she can’t quite piece together. She knows who Frank Castle is from a distance. It’s when she looks closer that everything gets blurry.
.
.
She cycles through her burners. The one she’d used to call David stays in the bottom of her duffel. She hasn’t turned it back on since then, but she can’t make herself get rid of it, either.
She calls Foggy, once, in a moment of weakness. The line rings and rings and she hangs up before he can answer.
She wonders if loneliness can actually kill someone.
.
.
They ride the bus with her, sometimes.
Kevin pops up the most. The first time, he’s hunched over his guitar, the one mom had given him before she died. He’s picking the strings randomly, strumming chords to life that Karen swears she’s never heard before.
“Stop showing off,” she jabs.
“Hey, it’s not my fault you don’t have a musical bone in your body,” he smiles, not looking up.
“Ouch. Where’d you learn to be so mean, kid?”
Now he snaps his eyes up. “I’m not a kid.”
You are, she thinks. You’re just a kid, you’re so, so young. Your whole life is there, just waiting for you to fill it —
Paxton visits occasionally. He never says anything, just sits and stares out the window. They’re driving through Kansas now, nothing but grass and plains for the past day and a half. Karen wonders if her father is thinking what she’s thinking when he looks out, if he’s wondering what it would be like walk off into the sun and dust, feet to the horizon.
“Hey.”
(It says something about the state of her life that Frank’s voice does something to her, even when it’s in her head.)
“You found me,” she says, not turning. She sees him in the window, his reflection distorted slightly.
“Thought I wouldn’t?”
“Hoped.”
He rumbles a laugh between his teeth. “You know me better than that, Miss Page.”
“Why,” she says, “why are you always here?”
“I just got here, Karen, what’re you —”
“I mean, in my life.” She looks at him, finally, taking his face in like she always does in case this is the last time she sees him. “Every time you leave, you come back. I’m tired of trying to figure out why, Frank, so if you could just fucking tell me —”
His hand is warm as he slips it through hers. She can almost feel the calluses on his fingers.
“You mean somethin’ to me,” he says. “Don’t you know that?”
He’s gone, when she looks again.
.
.
She runs until she hits mountains. Denver seems as good a place as any to stop, at least for a little while. There’s people here, not like New York, but enough for her to blend in, go unnoticed. Just one face in a million.
She finds an apartment and scoops up a night shift at a local bakery. It feels good, working with her hands. Making things instead of ripping them apart.
Time passes. Karen tries counting the days at first, but soon loses track. Weeks, months. She’s still here. She’s still here.
.
.
I killed him, she growls at Wilson Fisk, again and again. Sometimes it’s him. Sometimes it’s Kevin, or Ben, or Mrs. Cardenas, or —
She’s not sure she knows who she’s hiding from, anymore.
.
.
It had to happen, eventually. A material can only be stretched so far until —
.
.
She shouldn’t do it. She knows —but she’s starting to forget people. The color of their eyes, the sound of their voices. She just needs something, something to remind her she used to have people in her life who knew her real name, who cared she existed.
She calls home.
A strange voice answers. “Hello?”
“Uh—” she sputters, thrown off. “Hi, I’m — I’m looking for Paxton Page?”
“Shit, I really need to get this number changed. He moved, about, oh, a month and a half ago? Doesn’t live here anymore.”
The pit of her stomach turns to ice. “He — he moved? He’s gone?”
“Yeah. Think he said he was going out of state, too. Didn’t leave a forwarding address, though. Sorry I can’t be of more help.”
Karen sinks, melts into the floor, lets the phone slide out from between her fingers. Stupid, stupid. He told her himself, all those years ago. I don’t want you here, Karen. She thought, maybe, maybe if enough time passed, maybe the wound would start to scab over. Maybe he’d change his mind, and they could try to be some semblance of a family again.
I don’t want you here, he said, but what he meant was —
I don’t want you.
“Fuck,” she whispers to herself, the empty room, the universe. Anyone who’s listening. The answering silence is what finally does it. She unravels, slow tears at first that quickly devolve into throaty, heaving sobs that rock up the length of her spine, fan out across her shoulders, rip through bone and marrow and every little thing that’s holding her together.
She cries until she can’t anymore.
.
.
Karen blinks and the world pieces itself together. Floor, beneath her, every muscle in her body protesting loudly as she rolls into supine. Her brain feels like it’s bursting out of her skull. She must have slept here. It’s still dark — just before four a.m., the clock on her nightstand says.
C’mon, Karen. Sit up. Just sit up.
It’s muscle memory, after that. Stand, shuffle over to the sink, splash water on face.
Cross the room, dig through the duffel in the back of the closet. Find his burner.
It’s muscle memory, switching it on.
He calls less than a minute later.
“Karen? Karen —”
“Hey, Frank,” she says.
He makes a fractured noise on the other end. “She’s here, Lieberman, she’s — christ, Karen, you’re here, I can’t — you’re okay?”
“No,” she says with a low laugh. “But I’m here.”
“I’ll take it,” he says. “It’s — shit, it’s good to hear your voice.”
“I’m sorry, Frank.” She sinks her fingers into her hair. “I’m really sorry.”
“Don’t do that. You don’t do that with me, you got it? Jesus, Karen, I — I thought that was it. Thought—” he goes quiet, and she can almost see him tilting his head down, working his jaw. She can almost imagine wrapping her arms around him, her chin on his shoulder and her hands in his hair, the smell of him, how he feels pressed against her, warm and safe.
“I miss you,” she says.
She hears him pull a ragged breath between his teeth. “You have no idea, Page.”
Her fingers are wet, when she swipes at her face. “I don’t — know what to do. I don’t know what to do, Frank, please tell me, because I can’t do this, I can’t.”
“I’m here, Karen.” His voice swells, crests like a wave, and she realizes he’s crying, too. “Right here, yeah? I’m here, always.”
Just take a breath, Karen. Just breathe.
In, out, in again — and across the miles, she can hear Frank breathing, with her.

I Dream In Colour chapter 1: In Any Universe
https://archiveofourown.org/works/20335819/chapters/48217375
Jim sat up suddenly in bed, panting, his eyes wide open.
Even in the darkness of his quarters, the colours in front of his eyes were almost blinding. He screwed them shut, opened them again and blinked slowly, waiting for the bright sea of colour to lessen.
Shore leave would begin tomorrow, and he knew now more than ever where he needed to go. It was a gut feeling. But he wasn’t sure how well he’d be received and what would happen next.
Lights out,” he said as he laid down again, hoping that the darkness would stay dark long enough to get some sleep.
******
“You’re not coming?” McCoy asked him at the Starbase the next day. The Enterprise had docked primarily for shore leave but a couple of minor repairs were going to be done also and Scotty had insisted on staying aboard for now  to oversee things. Jim was pretty sure he’d marry the ship if he could.
“I’ll join you later, tomorrow probably. There’s somewhere I need to be.”
McCoy’s brow furrowed. “You sure you’re ok?”
“I’m fine, Bones.” Jim smiled broadly and patted him on the arm. “There’s just something I have to do.”
McCoy looked doubtful but to Jim’s surprise and relief, he left it at that.
“Just let me know when you’re back and we can hit that bar I was telling you about.”
“I will.” Jim was still smiling as he turned around and headed off to catch a shuttle. “And make sure Chekov brings ID,” he called out over his shoulder. “Last time we all went out the bouncers thought he was twelve!”
“Dammit, Jim, I’m a doctor not a babysitter!”
*****
It was nearly evening when he arrived at his destination, straightening his uniform and checking his reflection in the glass front door before knocking on it.
“Jim?”
“No James T. Kirk this time?”
“Jim seems more appropriate now. To what do I owe the unexpected pleasure of your visit?”  The elder of the two Spock’s in Jim’s life glanced down to the duffel bag bearing the Starfleet insignia that Jim was holding.
The younger man followed his gaze and laughed lightly. “Don’t worry, I’m not homeless. We’re on shore leave so I just thought I’d drop by and…” he hesitated and Spock tilted his head just slightly to one side, watching him search for the right words.   “...visit.” Jim finished simply with a smile, going with Spock’s choice of word.
Spock nodded and moved aside for Jim to come in. The door led almost directly into the small but ample kitchen which opened out into a spacious living room.
“Would you like some coffee?”
"That'd be great, thank you." Jim went through, taking in the singular armchair, long sofa and shelves lined with books about Vulcan history and a couple in languages that Jim vaguely recognised from classes at the academy when he hadn’t been paying enough attention.
“I’m sorry I didn’t call ahead and tell you I was coming. It was a spur of the moment sort of thing,” he said when Spock emerged with a tray carrying a mug of tea for himself and coffee for Jim.
“Apologies are not necessary, it is good to see you again. I am, however, intrigued.” Spock set the tray down on the low coffee table and sat in the sleek armchair opposite Jim on the sofa.
“Can’t a guy drop by his new old friend’s house for a surprise visit?” Jim put on his best dazzling smile, the one that usually got him out of most kinds of trouble.
“Jim, I have known some version of you long enough to know when you’re not telling me everything.”
Jim‘s dazzling smile evolved into a rueful one, as if he'd been caught out by someone who knew him better than he knew himself. “I've been...having dreams.”
Spock arched an eyebrow. “And what is the nature of these dreams?”
“It’s hard to explain. They started before everything with Nero. From my end anyway.  I mean….I think the timing works out that I started having them when you came through the black hole."
There was no mistaking the surprise on Spock's face, but his voice was as calm and even as Jim had ever heard it. “What takes place in them?”
“I’m not sure how to describe it. Nothing actually happens. No people, no talking. Just colour.  Intense colour, so intense it burns my eyes. Blue and yellow. No, more like gold. And they merge together but…they don’t change. I mean that should turn everything kinda green right? But they just stay like that. The two colours fit, perfectly together and if anything they each get brighter.”
Spock nodded slowly, taking a moment before he spoke. “You are far too insightful and intelligent not to have figured out what these dreams seem to symbolise.”
“I don’t know for sure.”
“But that’s why you’re here, for confirmation.”
”I guess I am, yeah.” Jim nodded as he spoke.
“The science officer and captain’s uniforms were the same colour in my Starfleet as here in yours,” Spock said, anticipating Jim’s question before he could even ask it. He sighed heavily. “It is possible that something slipped through in the mind meld I performed in the cave. Something more than the initial emotional transference. It had been some time since I had last engaged in a meld and my mental shields may not be as fortified as they once were. I am sorry, Jim, if I have caused any of your distress.”
Jim shook his head. “This wasn’t your fault. It was already happening. For whatever reason." He met Spock's eyes, looking into them as if they were the only place left in the galaxy to look. "It’s like...I knew you were coming." He held Spock's gaze for a few moments more before closing his eyes and shaking his head as he looked away, chuckling lightly. "This sounds ridiculous. I'm sorry, I probably shouldn't have come here."
"On the contrary, I think this is the only place you could have come." Spock's small smile was kind, comforting. The kind of smile people didn't usually aim at Jim Kirk, and any thought he had of just upping and leaving right now instantly disappeared.
"There was actually a flash of something in the meld. Not an image, just a...feeling. A good one but…not familiar. And...and it…" Jim hesitated, but Spock inclined his head, brow arched just slightly, as if the end of this sentence was the final line of a book that couldn't be left unwritten.
"...It felt like you took my hand.”
There was something in Spock’s expression that Jim couldn’t read. Expressions would be more accurate: sadness, confusion, a wistful smile. Jim wondered if he even saw a glimmer of hope on his face. But they were all just glimpses, micro-expressions even on the face of this older Vulcan who was more emotive and readable than his younger self.
Jim decided to ask the question that had been on his mind during so many of his sleepless nights, the one he knew he’d really come here to ask. “Were you and the other Jim Kirk...together?”
“We were. Though I would have used a different term. T’hyla .”
“What does that mean?” Jim asked, feeling like he already knew the answer.
“There is no direct translation into English but the closest description would be -“
“Soulmate?”
“Indeed.”
Jim exhaled and nodded. “Wow. I mean, I guessed but...wow. “ He leaned back on the sofa, rubbing his eyes with one hand and holding his coffee cup in the other, the warmth radiating from it comforting and grounding him as he tried to make sense of everything.
“You are tired, Jim.”
“Yeah, well I haven’t been getting much sleep.”
“It would be advisable for you to try and rest while you are on leave.”
Jim nodded in agreement, not even trying to stifle a yawn. “I’m gonna stay at the Starfleet embassy in town tonight, catch a shuttle back later tomorrow. Hopefully, we can talk more before I go?”
“I have a guest room that has never been used and is unlikely to be. You are welcome to stay here.”
“Are you sure?”
“I am. And it would give us more time to speak about the dreams.”
“Thank you.” Jim smiled and yet again he was met with the same small, comforting smile in response.
“Let me show you upstairs and I’ll make a start on dinner while you rest." Spock rose gracefully from his chair and Jim followed him, picking up his duffel bag.
“Making sure I eat properly too, you’re starting to sound like Bones. But less…"
“Persistent?”
“I was gonna say shouty but we’ll go with your diplomatic version.”
“A wise decision.”
Jim grinned and Spock opened the guest room door, showing him in.
“I’ll just get settled and come help you with dinner.”
“You are a guest, it would be customary for me to make you dinner and for you to simply consume it if is acceptable.” There was a playful smile on his lips, which was not what Jim was used to seeing on the face of a Vulcan. Although he only knew one other Vulcan.
“Was the other me prone to being customary ?”
“He was not.”
“Well, there’s an old earth saying, ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’. I guess that was written for me, all versions of me.” Jim’s smile was playful too and, he had to admit, almost flirtatious.  “Besides, I’d like to help.” He hadn’t ‘helped’ in the kitchen since he was little and would watch his mother making meals from scratch then insist on stirring or mixing something for her. She would smile and scoop him up, letting him sit on the counter and help, even taste the food before it was ready. But those times had been few and soon stopped altogether.
“Very well.”
Spock turned to head back downstairs as Jim walked through the door, leaving it half-open behind him. But the temptation was, to his surprise, too much and he soundlessly turned back, watching Jim for a few seconds as he dropped his duffel bag on the bed and went to to the large window, smiling at the view. The younger man stretched, rolling his shoulders and yawning again before taking a plain grey t-shirt from his bag and starting to pull off the Starfleet one he was wearing.
Only then did Spock turn around, making his way back downstairs to the kitchen.

break the ice.
a/n: so i was pretty inspired after the pics of shawn at the hockey game came out cause shawn and hockey are my two favorite things and thus you get this. it’s pretty rusty cause i haven’t written anything non-school related in a long time and it’s my first rodeo in the world of shawn but i just had to get this out into the open, if only for myself. i have a few other ideas for cute little blurbs with hockey shawn but we’ll see what happens with those. hope you enjoy! :]
Shawn was the new kid in town and everyone knew it despite the fact that it had already been a few months since he moved out here. After a long conversation with his hockey coach that saw “a world of potential in him” and his parents, he made the decision to transfer to the university before their next season because of the esteemed hockey program it ran. It was common knowledge that they had trained a few pretty well known players, a couple of whom even went on to play in a professional league or two around the country. Shawn knew that if he even wanted a shot at playing hockey beyond the college level then this was where he needed to be. And he also knew that his life needed to revolve around the sport (and his education of course), with absolutely no distractions. He was here for business not pleasure which didn’t exactly make him the most popular new kid on the team.
Things were difficult for Shawn at first. He was extremely close with both his family and all his friends that he left behind in Toronto. Not getting to see them often or hang out was rough. He was lying if he said that there wasn’t a period of time when he thought that he wouldn’t make it. That maybe he just wasn’t cut out for this. But things got better. He loosened up a bit, especially when he got to know some of the other guys on the team. They got him to break a little out of his shell and to not be so serious all the time, only when it was required of him. He was starting to feel a little more like he belonged and just a little less homesick. Routine kicked in quickly with the start of the semester and things got even easier. Class, practice, schoolwork, sleep, repeat. Throw in the occasional team dinner or party at the hockey house and that was his life. Not that he was complaining though. This was exactly that he had wanted. It was why he was here.
It was another long practice after a long day of classes for Shawn. Normally he wouldn’t complain but with the first set of games coming up this weekend, the coach had been on their ass all week long. All he wanted to do was go back to his place and crash but he couldn’t think about that. Not when Shawn still felt he had to prove he deserved to be here to his coaches, his teammates, and himself.
After finishing one of the drills, Shawn skated over to where the rest of his teammates where already positioned. He tried to catch his breath as he grabbed one of the water bottles and took a long drink before scanning the arena. The rink was basically empty save his teammates, the coaching staff, and the few employees scattered around trying to prepare the arena for this weekend’s games. That was until a small figure sitting a few rows behind the player’s bench caught his attention. He had seen her linger around practices occasionally which always threw him off because they were generally closed to the public. She couldn’t have been a worker because she wasn’t wearing a uniform and if she was one of the athletic trainers or worked for the team, she wouldn’t just be sitting around; she’d be engaging with the coaches or players. Shawn sure as hell wasn’t complaining though cause she was gorgeous. He noticed it almost immediately and despite the fact that she was bundled in a heavy sweater, scarf, and beanie with her face in a book, she was still stunning. He needed to know who she was. Knowing his luck though, she was already taken by one of his new teammates and that was why she was bumming around during their practices.
“Dude,” He started as he nudged the shoulder of Cole, one of his buddies on the team, before nodding in her direction. “Who’s the girl over there? I’ve seen her around a bit.” Shawn was a little taken back when Cole patted him on the shoulder with a laugh and a shake of his head.
“No. Don’t even think about it man. Don’t go there.” Cole warned. Shawn couldn’t tell by his tone whether he was being serious or joking since he seemed pretty amused by what he thought was a pretty innocent question.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Confusion was written on Shawn’s face as he tried to discretely glance back towards the girl. There was clearly something that he was missing here. Obviously she came with a warning for a reason. His teammates had warned him about girls that liked to linger around the hockey players, but she didn’t give that vibe. Especially since it appeared that she wasn’t really paying all that much attention to practice.
Deciding to throw the new kid a bone, Cole leaned in as he joined Shawn in looking towards the girl. “That would be Sophie Brooks...” Cole paused to allow his words to settle with Shawn.
Brooks. Brooks? Why did that name sound so damn familiar to him? It took a couple of seconds for it to actually sink in, letting out a loud groan when it finally did. “Fuckk, you’re kidding right? Brooks? As in Coach Brooks? You mean to tell me that’s-”
“The coach’s daughter. That’s exactly who that is.” Cole answered, confirming his response with a sad smile. “Don’t worry bro, we’ve all been there. But like I said, spare yourself the trouble and drop it right now. Especially if you want to actually have ice time during any games this season. Last kid who tried that ended up getting benched for a couple of games.”
Trying not to seem too bummed, Shawn adjusted the visor on his helmet before giving Sophie another quick glance. Of course that would be his luck. Sure, she wasn’t taken but she might as well be. It was practically an unwritten rule that she would be off limits to him, especially if he ever wanted his skates to touch the ice during a game which was the entire reason he was here.
“Hey! Mendes!” He heard the coach scream from across ice, snapping him out of his little trance he was in. He quickly shifted his gaze to his coach, who didn’t seem too pleased that he missed his cue. “Would you like to join us in practice? Or want to divulge whatever conversation you’re having with your buddy here that’s more important than listening?!”
Shawn quickly shook his head and diverted his gaze down to his skates, grateful that Sophie was far enough away to see his cheeks turn red from being called out. He hoped she didn’t hear it, but that was only wishful thinking.
“Didn’t think so, now run the damn play!!”
Shawn spent the rest of practice trying to actually focus on hockey and not the girl that was sitting a few rows up, watching on. The last thing he wanted was to be embarrassed in front of everyone and to get on the coach’s bad side so early in his first season with the team. For the most part he was successful. The rest of practice was uneventful and after a quick shower and gathering all of his equipment into his hockey bag, he was bidding his teammates goodbye and heading to his Jeep to go home for the night.
Readjusting the bag over his shoulder as he got closer, he spotted Sophie loading a few things into her own car. Popping open his hatch, Shawn tossed his equipment bags into his Jeep before slamming the door shut and glancing over at her. “You need any help with that?” He knew he was playing with fire but offering a friendly hand wasn’t off limits. Shawn was just being the gentleman that he was raised to be. His mother would be proud.
Sophie smiled and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear before she politely declined. “Oh, thank you but it’s only a few more bags so I think I can handle it.”
He had to admit that he felt a little bit defeated by her dismissal and he tried his damnest not to show it, just offering her a simple shrug before starting to turn back to his car. So much for playing it smooth and trying to at least make small talk with her, but maybe it really was for the better. Shawn certainly perked up though when he heard her soft voice again.
“Wait, you’re the new kid right? The transfer from Toronto? You play, uh, right wing! It’s Shane right?” Another chuckle fell from her lips as she glanced away from him. “Sorry. It’s how I keep all of you straight.”
Shawn wanted to be upset or at least a little bummed that she hadn’t quite gotten his name right but she seemed to at least know a little bit about him so that had to mean something. It definitely had to be good, or at least that’s how he was going to take it. Even if she made the off-handed comment that she did it with all his teammates too. Rubbing the back of his neck nervously, he let out a small chuckle before nodding. “It’s actually Shawn, but yeah. That’s me.”
“My bad, Shawn. It’s nice to meet you.” She repeated. Suddenly he was very okay with correcting her after hearing her say his name with a quiet giggle. God, he was screwed if after only a few words, barely even a conversation, he was giddy and clinging to holding onto their conversation for as long as possible. “And you’re Sophie, right? Coach Brook’s daughter.”
Laughter escaped her lips as she pulled her jacket closer to her frame and rocked back and forth on her heels a few times. “Ahhh, so the boys have already warned you about me. Interesting. Hopefully it’s all been good things.”
“No! No! I mean of course they’re good things. Not that much has been said really. It’s nothing like that though. I was just curious was all.” Shawn scrambled to try to explain himself but was failing miserably. He could feel his cheeks heating up and could only imagine how red his face was slowly turning. This was not going well. He should have done the smart thing and just hopped in his Jeep and drove off instead of embarrassing himself in front of her. Quite the first impression he was leaving with her.
“Curious, huh?” She asked with a raise of her brow before switching the subject. “It’s good that they warned you though. It’s probably needed. Everyone thinks that it’s the coach that you have to impress but it’s actually me. I’m the tough Brooks. I’ve heard a lot about you though listening to my dad ramble on and on after he heard you were officially joining the team. You have a lot to live up to. Let’s hope you’re up for the challenge.” She sent him a small smirk before loading the last of her things into the car and wandering to the driver’s side. “I’ll see you on the ice Mendes. Better be bringing your A game.” She said with a wide grin before climbing into her car and pulling out of the spot before he could even respond.
Shawn could only stand still as he watched her drive off. Oh he was gonna be in a lot of trouble. So much for no distractions.

It’s a Nice Day for a White Wedding (Chapter 3)
“Great work today, Beric,” his Evidence Professor smiled benignly at him. Beric beamed. “Gunner,” someone coughed behind him, and a number of the other students tittered. Beric tried not to let his shoulders drop. This was stupid, he was 24 years old, a law school student at the top of his class. What did he care what some douche bag students thought about him? It would have just been nice for law school to be different from college. Or college to have been different from high school. He sent a mental prayer to the universe that at some point this cliquey nonsense would end. When he got to the student lounge, he stopped to carefully post one of the flyers that Thoros had given him for his pub’s trivia night. He had finished stapling it to be perfectly offset against the neighboring help wanted poster at eye-level, and had taken a step back to admire it, when another group of students came in. “Oooh trivia night!” A bubbly 1L paused, no doubt attracted by the excellent placement of the flyer. Beric smiled. “Pfff that’s a townie bar,” one of the guys from earlier sneered. “You’ll get stabbed on the way home.” Beric frowned. He opened his mouth to firmly lecture them that the income disparity in Oldtown was one of the highest in the country and they should be more cognizant of the tremendous economic privileges they all enjoyed as students of the Citadel. And also his boyfriend was a bartender at that bar so shut the fuck up. Then he thought better of picking a fight with his classmates and shoved his hands in his pockets. 2L year was almost over. He just needed to stick this out for one more year and then he could join a district attorney’s office and crusade for the downtrodden and this would be a distant memory. Thoros was already at work when he got back to the apartment, so he cooked a quick dinner and ate it while slogging through his reading. Part of the problem with being a law student while Thoros was a bartender was that their schedules were almost completely out of sync. He went to classes at the Citadel all day, got home around six. Thoros’ shift was from 5pm to 2am. By the time Thoros stumbled home around 3, Beric was usually sound asleep. And good luck trying to wake Thoros up before 10. Basically it had taken a toll, because Beric had discovered that life without Thoros was boring, depressing, infinitely more irritating and definitely more sexually frustrating. So when he finished his outline for the Criminal Procedure reading, he tried to turn to Patent Litigation. And instead found himself wondering how trivia night was going. Maybe he should just stop by and check. If people were focused on the trivia, the actual bar might be relatively quiet. High Heart was run by a tiny woman who was impossibly old and quite crazy. Naturally she got along well with Thoros. Beric was not a huge fan, largely because she liked to address him as ‘Lord of Corpses’. A motorcycle crash in high school had left him with one eye, a fairly gruesome scar around his neck and several far more gruesome scars on his chest (which nobody ever saw but Thoros). Basically overnight he’d gone from being universally considered adorable, tall, dark blond hair, blue eyes, to being universally considered fairly alarming looking—gaunt, eye patch, etc. Lord of Corpses indeed. So thank you, shriveled little witch creature. Beric immediately felt guilty for thinking that about an elderly woman who didn’t seem to have much in the way of family aside from her granddaughter and resolved to try and be nicer to her. Fortunately his new resolution was not put to the test as he entered High Heart. Jenny (the granddaughter) was on duty and reading the trivia questions cheerfully into a microphone. Beric turned toward the bar. Pouring a pint of beer, red top knot bent over the task, was his boyfriend of six years. Even seeing him was enough to send a spike of dopamine straight through his brain and he grinned. Thoros finished filling the beer, swiped the excess foam off the top (Beric felt just the teensiest bit inappropriately aroused by that—this had been a rough year) and slid it expertly down the bar to a patron. “Hi,” Beric blurted less than suavely as he collapsed on a bar stool. Thoros smirked and slouched over. “What are you having?” He said, pretending Beric was just a regular customer. Beric narrowed his good eye. He could play this game. “I don’t know,” Beric spoke quietly so that Thoros had to lean forward over the bar to hear him. “What am I having?” He tried to lace it with innuendo. A smile twitched across Thoros’ face, so it must have worked. “You’ll have to speak up a little bit, I can barely hear you,” Thoros teased. Beric blushed. “A draft of the winter ale?” Thoros pretended like he had responded. He poured it, and Beric laid his head on the bar with a pout. “There, there,” Thoros patted his head. “If that guy down the bar gets up and leaves we can reevaluate.” Beric shot his most ferocious glare down the bar at the old man obliviously nursing his beer. “You’re adorable when you’re sulking,” Thoros pushed the cold glass against his neck, forcing Beric to lift his head with a yelp. “Now do you want to tell me about it?” “Law school sucks. Law school students are the worst. I miss you,” Beric took a sip of his beer moodily. “You have me right here,” Thoros rolled his eyes. “I wanted to have you right here,” Beric raised his eyebrow. “You gave me a winter ale instead.” “I have a good feeling about later,” Thoros winked. “Look at that geezer. He could die at any minute.” “I try not to bet on other people dying first. I usually lose,” Beric said gloomily. “So what’s happened? You left me a smiley face breakfast sandwich this morning so I thought things were going well.” “I made you a smiley face breakfast sandwich this morning because you deserve a smiley face breakfast sandwich every morning,” Beric said.  “And if I didn’t you would probably eat dry cereal and that’s not healthy. But returning to your question, it’s just my classmates being dicks.” “It can’t be worse than high school.” “I honestly think it might be,” Beric sighed as Thoros took a generous swig from the beer. “You’re exaggerating for a sympathy fuck,” Thoros drawled. “I’m not! They’re completely awful! They’re entitled and self-absorbed and all they want to do is work at white shoe corporate law firms and spend their six figure salaries on fancy cars and trophy wives. They hate the kids who actually try in class and they make fun of the kids on scholarship and they’re...” Beric suddenly trailed off. “What?” Thoros looked up from the glasses he’d been cleaning as he listened. “They’re here,” Beric hissed in a low voice. “That’s them! At that table near the back!” He nodded his head at the boisterous group of students lounging as if they owned the place. Jenny read the next trivia question, and Beric was appalled to see no fewer than two of them check their phones to look up the answer. “They’re cheating!” Beric scowled. “They’re trying to be lawyers and they’re cheating!” “S’good practice,” Thoros shrugged. When Beric frowned, he sighed. “Fine, I’ll tell Jenny to make sure that group is disqualified if they win. Don’t you think you’re taking this maybe a little too seriously?” “They are ruining the integrity of the game for everyone and they are the worst,” Beric bit. “I feel like you’re missing what’s really important here,” Thoros smirked mischievously. Beric looked at him suspiciously, not sure where he was going. This expression usually meant trouble. “What’s really important?” He said slowly. Thoros leaned forward into his space. “That geezer is paying his bill,” Thoros whispered, his breath tickling Beric’s ear. Beric turned slowly. He was. Suddenly this day was improving. And then it wasn’t. The door slammed open, revealing an all-too familiar face. “Robert!” Thoros said cheerfully. “Gentlemen!” Robert plopped down on the seat next to Beric, sounding already more than a little tipsy. “I’m going to be a dad!” Beric spat some beer back into his cup and started coughing. Robert reached over and thumped his back with a force that rattled every bone in his body. “Congratulations!” Thoros seemed serenely unphased. “Who’s the lucky lady?” “Cersei!” Robert beamed. Beric’s cough turned into more of a hack and Thoros got him a cup of water. Which allowed him to avoid speaking for a while longer. Cersei Lannister had been a year below them in high school. She was strikingly beautiful and more than a little crazy. She and Robert had always been a bit of an odd match—Robert was playing with a few cards short of a full deck and Cersei was playing with six sets of cards and some cyvasse pieces. On the other hand, Robert’s childlike disregard for others complimented Cersei’s sociopathy nicely. Or terribly. Depending on your perspective. More disturbing in the short term was how Robert’s love of alcohol complimented Thoros’ love of alcohol. “You know what this calls for?!” Thoros was already reaching under the bar. “SHOTS!” Robert whooped. “Shots!” Thoros echoed, slamming a bottle of high end vodka on the table. “Shots,” Beric forced himself to smile. Because if you can’t beat them, join them. Several shots later... “I’ve never loved anybody but Cersei,” Robert was saying, looking at Thoros through the bottom of his shot glass. “What about Lyanna?” Thoros asked, finishing the beer Beric had abandoned. And then the beer the old man from before had abandoned. “Psh that wasn’t real love. I loved like... the idea her right? And the sex. That was good too. But the sex with Cersei is better. She’s like a sexy lioness.” “Are lionesses sexy?” Thoros scrunched his nose as he tried to pry the still half full fifth shot from Beric’s hand. Beric allowed him to transfer Beric’s grip to Thoros’ free hand, so they were now holding hands across the bar as Thoros drank the remainder of the booze. Beric promptly lay his head down on their hands. His boyfriend. He loved him so much. He hoped Robert found somebody this great. Thoros was absent-mindedly stroking his hair. “Is Beric asleep?” Robert asked. “Just resting I think. Low tolerance.” “Not everyone can be us,” Robert laughed. “I’ll drink to that!” “So will you be a groomsman at our wedding? I wanted Beric to be one too but Cersei said I could only have four.” “Psh probably can’t find more than four female friends.” “That’s totally it. I was surprised she could find four honestly.” “She should just stuff Jaime Lannister in a dress. Boom, problem solved.” “Ha! Wanna switch to beer?” “Chyeah.” “Hey,” this was a third voice, another guy. Why did it sound familiar? “Can you stop talking to your friends and take my order?” “Can you stop being an asshole and fuck off?” That was Robert. “I know you,” the voice said. “You’re the quarterback for the Oldtown Maesters.” “Uh yeah, you a fan?” Robert tried to adjust the level of hostility in his voice. “You could say that. I’m top of my fantasy football league thanks to you! Three interceptions last game? Ha you’re a complete shit show! I rearrange my team every week to bet against you!” Oh no. Beric placed that voice now. It was the jackass from law school. He lifted his head. “Burton Crakehall,” he said matter of factly, having to lift his voice to be heard over Robert’s audible growl. The Westerman was as per usual flanked by a couple of sneering lackeys. “Dondarrion, didn’t see you there. What the fuck are you doing in a dump like this? I would have pictured you sipping Chardonnay in some Lysene joint,” Crakehall snorted, extending a pinky as he mimed holding a wine glass. Beric glared. “Perhaps we are getting off on the wrong foot,” he said evenly, trying to keep his temper in check and salvage some dignity from the situation. “Burton, this is my boyfriend Thoros Asshai and our good friend Robert Baratheon. Burton is in my year in law school.” Crakehall gave Thoros a distinctly unimpressed once over that had Beric grinding his teeth. Thoros stared back, arms crossed. “I guess when you’re all maimed you have to take what you can get,” Crakehall muttered to one of his lackeys as they started to retreat. Thoros’ face darkened, but Beric grabbed his shoulder. He was nowhere near fast enough to stop Robert however. Robert covered the distance between himself and Crakehall in a single bound. “You can let us know,” he snarled, picking up the man and hurling him bodily into a wall. The bar went completely silent, as the remainder of Crakehall’s table stood up. “Who the fuck do you think you are?!” Crakehall bounced to his feet, bleeding from a cut to the head. “I’ll kill you!” Then things escalated. Crakehall and three more friends charged Robert, who went down in a pile of flailing limbs. Thoros wriggled out of Beric’s grasp and hopped over the bar to assist. The brawl knocked over another table, spilling drinks everywhere, and the enraged patrons jumped in. It was really devolving into a free for all, when Beric spotted Crakehall slowly extricating himself from the scrum. Well that wouldn’t do. Beric waited until Crakehall had managed to get to his feet and brush himself off. “Excuse me,” Beric said politely. “I believe you forgot something.” Crakehall opened his mouth to say something, only to squawk as his nose crunched under Beric’s fist.
