𓃶 What Is The Wild Hunt?
The Wild Hunt is a common belief among many Northern European cultures. In short, the hunt is a cavalcade of ghosts, spirits, fairies, elves, and other spiritual beings that is said to sweep across our world every year. Depending on where your beliefs come from, when it happens will differ.
It is commonly believed that the leader of The Wild Hunt is a deity or figure of importance of some kind, such as Odin/Woden in Norse and Saxon traditions, or King Arthur in British lore. Other leaders of the hunt include but are not limited to:
𖤓 Arawn or Gwyn ap Nudd, commonly seen as the Welsh lords of Annwn
𖤓 Danish king Valdemar Atterdag
𖤓 The Norse dragon slayer Sigurd
𖤓 Biblical figures like Cain, Gabriel, Herod and the devil
𖤓 Gothic king Theodoric the Great
☾༺♰༻☽
𓃶 What Did People Do For The Wild Hunt?
The Wild Hunt was generally seen as a bad omen; one for destruction, famine, war, plague, or the death of the one who saw it. In many traditions, witnessing the hunt would result in the viewer being abducted to Otherworld or Underworld. Other times, those who were not protected would have their souls pulled from their bodies while they sleep, and they would join the menagerie of the dead.
To avoid this fate, people in Wales, for example, began the tradition of carving pumpkins as a way to avoid being taken by the fae. In Scandinavia, offerings like bread were put outside the home as an offering to the spirits joining Odin for the hunt.
☾༺♰༻☽
𓃶 When is The Wild Hunt?
Depending on where your beliefs stem from, there are various answers to this question.
In Britain, The Wild Hunt is associated with the autumn season, specifically around and on Samhain/The Autumn Equinox.
Scandinavian tradition tells us that they prepared for the hunt around December, specifically Yule/The Winter Equinox.
☾༺♰༻☽
𓃶 What Entities Are A Part of the Wild Hunt?
Many entities are associated with the Wild Hunt in different areas. These entities include but are not limited to:
𖤓 The Fae (The Sidhe, The Tlywyth Teg, etc)
𖤓 Spirits of the Dead
𖤓 Demons
𖤓 Valkyries
𖤓 The Spirits of Huntsmen or Nobles
𖤓 Horses (sometimes with an abnormal amount of legs)
𖤓 Wolves and dogs (sometimes spiritual in nature, i.e. the Cwn Annwn)

‼️ CC3 SPOILERS AHEAD ‼️
You know what, after all these CC3 leaks, it’s so good to be:
1. A Nesta stan. We’re eating good. I’m gobbling it all up. I will need days to process this book. I love this woman so much. 🗡️🔥
2. A Hunt/Quinlar Stan. I love my unhinged and unapologetic fae princess and her winged mate. They’re like crack to me. Bryceriel is so dead and Quinlar is once again on TOP BABEY. Fuck away with all the Hunt hate, cuz you won’t find it on this page, hoes. 🪽🌙
3. A Gwynriel Stan. I don’t care what anybody else says. The FACT, THE CANON MATERIAL literally states Azriel has no romantic interest. Bye Elain—you’re finally freed of the Elriel agenda, be free~ 💀🫶🏻

Emma to Cristina
Dear Cristina,
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry! I realize the message I just sent you probably didn’t make a lick of sense, so after you’ve read it, toss it and read this. I was in kind of a hysterical state when I wrote it — I’ve been wanting to tell you all about what was going on with Mina being kidnapped for days, but I couldn’t. Then, when I could, it all just kind of poured out. Again, sorry!
It was awful not being able to say anything to you about what was happening. I’ve always hated politics, as you know—but however unusual your (and Mark’s) position, the Seelie Court would certainly consider you part of Kieran’s retinue, and we were expressly forbidden from contacting either Court about the fact that Mina was kidnapped right out of her bedroom here at Blackthorn Hall. And we obeyed to the letter.
So, it turned out the person who’d spearheaded the kidnapping was Mother Hawthorn, the nursemaid to the First Heir, who chose to marry a Shadowhunter. She’s had a complicated relationship with Shadowhunters, especially Herondales (who DOESN’T have a complicated relationship with Herondales, I ask you) ever since — and now she was demanding to see Kit if we ever wanted to get Mina back.
Nobody wanted Kit to do it, even though everyone was desperately afraid for Mina. But he was determined. There was no stopping him. So arrangements were made through a bunch of faerie go-betweens for Kit to meet Mother Hawthorn. She had demanded a rendezvous near river water, so we went down to the Promenade in Chiswick. There’s an itty bitty park there, and a little bandstand. We all — me and Julian, Tessa and Jem and Kit — walked down there, pretty quietly and somberly. Tessa kept stroking Kit’s back, and it was clear she was trying not to cry. Jem looked like he wanted to kill someone. Kit just looked determined. And Jules — well, I’ll get to Jules.
We stayed some distance away while Kit crossed the dry grass toward the bandstand. As he approached, Mother Hawthorn came out of the trees, holding Mina, and started walking toward him.
Jules and I both tensed up, in case either Jem or Tessa made a break for the baby. We wouldn’t have blamed them, but we knew they couldn’t be allowed to do it – Kit had to be able to try to get Mina without a violent fight. All I can say is, you can kind of see how much they’ve both been through and endured over all the time they've been alive. They clutched each other’s hands and neither of them moved, even though you could see how desperately they wanted to run to their children. It was an incredible display of control, and heart-breaking too.
Kit and Mother Hawthorn came together in front of the bandstand. Of course we couldn’t hear anything of their conversation, but we could see that Mina immediately put her arms out for Kit. Kit tried to reach for her, but Mother Hawthorn held up a hand. She clearly wouldn’t give her back, and they started arguing. I could tell how angry Kit was, even though he was trying to hold onto control. He kept shaking his head no over and over, almost every time Mother Hawthorn spoke.
Anyway, after a couple of minutes of that, Mother Hawthorn started to laugh. She looked over — she clearly saw us and didn’t care — and snapped her fingers. Kit was flung to the ground; he rolled over and came up on his feet, but by then black vines were whipping up out of the ground, slashing at him, winding around his legs. Mina was screaming so loudly we could hear her.
“That’s enough,” Jem snarled, and started across the street. But Julian put a hand on his shoulder.
“Wait,” he said, and we all stared at him — you know I have utter faith in Julian, but for a moment even I wondered if he’d gone crazy.
And then. Then there was this huge noise. I thought it was a helicopter at first, or maybe a bunch of helicopters, but then I realized no, the sound was stranger than that — it was hooves, beating against the sky. They passed over us and—it was Gwyn and Diana! I mean, it was the whole Wild Hunt, there were a couple dozen of them, some on horses, some on winged creatures I’d never seen before. But in front was Gwyn, with Diana on another horse behind him, her hair streaming out behind her.
Diana swooped down and grabbed Mina right out of Mother Hawthorn’s arms. Gwyn was right behind her, and seized up Mother Hawthorn in one arm—that guy is, uh, pretty strong I guess—and kind of slung her over the back of his horse. It looked pretty dangerous for Mother Hawthorn but you know, not a lot of sympathy for kidnappers here.
Diana swooped (the Wild Hunt does a lot of swooping, as you may recall) over to us, and gently handed Mina off to Jem and Tessa. Then Diana winked at us and rose back into the sky, and she and Gwyn and the whole rest of the Hunt ascended faster than I would have thought possible. I guess they had to get Mother Hawthorn away from us, which made sense. Anyway, they disappeared into the clouds and were gone.
I have to say, Diana’s wink was pretty badass. It made me miss doing badass stuff, a little. I think I’ll take Cortana out back tonight and seriously behead some weeds.
So anyway. Kit was running back toward us, and Tessa was crying in relief and Jem was staring at where the Wild Hunt had disappeared. Mina, of course, was fine. She kept saying, “Horsies!” which was hilarious, and then Kit got there and started fussing over her, and Julian and I stepped away to give the four of them space for their reunion.
Julian had one of those Looks on his face, and I had a hunch. “That was you, right?” I said. “You contacted the Wild Hunt.”
He shrugged. “Mother Hawthorn said not to contact the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, but the Wild Hunt is neither. They don’t swear allegiance to anybody.”
“Neither does Mother Hawthorn,” I said. “So it was like, ‘Wild fey, come get your wild friend, she is getting too wild?’”
“Something like that,” he said, and his voice was casual but I could tell he was pleased with himself. And all right, fine, I was pleased with him too, and I told him so.
On the way back to the house we asked Kit what it was Mother Hawthorn even wanted. He said she wanted to tell him he was the descendent of the first you-know-who (I know Kieran has told you something about Kit’s faerie heritage, but not all of it, and most people don't know) and that she had come to take him to live in Faerie where he belongs. He said he tried to make it clear that he didn’t want to live in Faerie, that he was satisfied with the life he had (although he kind of looked over at Jem and Tessa while he said it and I think satisfied is maybe less embarrassing to say than how he actually feels, which is much better than that). She just kept telling him it was his destiny and his duty, his fate would come for him soon enough if he didn’t bend to it, blah blah faerie stuff, you know how they are. (Uh, no offense if you’re reading this too, Kieran.)
I don’t think he was telling the whole truth, though, because Mother Hawthorn went to a lot of trouble just to send a message like that. I mean she could have put that on a postcard. It wasn’t anything Kit didn’t already know, basically. I am sure there was more she said that Kit didn’t want to share — I could tell from his expression. I hope he’ll tell Jem and Tessa, when he’s ready. At least we can be pretty sure Gwyn will make sure Mother Hawthorn stays away from him  — it’s one less thing to worry about.
That’s about all the news from here, and I’m so relieved to be able to share it with you finally. I guess if Kieran needs more information he should reach out to Gwyn; I’ve told you pretty much all I know.
Take care, and talk to you soon, and love to K and M!

Sarah's face in reaction to being asked if Hunt and Bryce are really mates:
Tumblr media
Sarah’s face in reaction to Steph telling her that people think Gwyn singing and Azriel’s shadows answering isn’t a valid reason for them to be together:
Tumblr media
it’s the same reaction!
Bryce and Hunt are confirmed mates so it’s pretty obvious what her reaction means.

He is the only sjm love interest who has treated his girl right from the get go.
Like im sorry he isn´t a emo shadow daddy and has a personality.
Yall are just going to have to deal with it because Hunt is the main man of crescent city and the spotlight is his and bryces.

I’ve had more time to sit with HOFAS so here are things I loved and things that bugged me.
THINGS I LOVED
AZRIEL AND NESTA - Where to even begin. Their relationship and friendship is EVERYTHING. I'm so glad SJM chose to highlight both of them for the ACOTAR part because their chemistry is everything. I can't wait for more in ACOTAR 5
AZRIEL - Every new thing we learned about Azriel had me screeching. It's so clear SJM is setting him up for the next book. Every scene he appeared in I was obsessed! Finding out about truthteller, him being protective of his mom, him interacting with music, him being all hot and threatening....this bat has me in a chokehold I swear.
THE LORE - All the new information we got about Prythian and Midgard is so interesting. I wish I was a theories person because there's so much to theorize about!
RUHNLIDIA - They served in this book omg. When Ruhn was like "this is my first mission with my girlfriend I want to impress her" I almost threw my phone I'm not even kidding. They are so cute🥹✨✨
HUNT - I still feel like I need more Hunt. He's such a sweetheart and was truly a highlight for me in this book. I love him so much and I was totally rooting for him to fry Celestina.
THINGS THAT BUGGED ME
Ruhn and Lidia’s mate announcement. I knew Ruhn and Lidia would be mates from HOSAB so I was only waiting for confirmation but the way it was written threw me off. Ruhn just said it out of nowhere and to…of all people…Pollux….like what? Why? Idk it could have been more emotional.
Ariadne- I don’t understand the point of introducing this new character only to do NOTHING with her. I shipped her and Flynn sooo much. The way she was introduced in the beginning of the book had me so hyped only for her to disappear. Like imagine a dragon marching with the armies of Hel when they fought the Asteri…
Sigrid - That entire plotline felt useless to me. She was set up to be this hope for the wolves and it all amounted to nothing. So why did we waste so much time on her. I enjoyed Ithan’s chapters because I really like him. But from an objective point of view…most of what SJM made him do didn’t make sense. If she wanted him to become Prime (which I loved btw) she didn’t need to waste all that time on Sigrid and her resurrection only for her to join Sabine the person she’s supposed to hate and then disappear.
Tharion and Sathia - No…just no…..
Bryce ignoring Hunt’s trauma - She did it in HOSAB but again and on a larger scale in HOFAS. Everytime Hunt brought up his fears (understandable because he has now faced the Asteri twice and suffered insane consequences) Bryce just got angry and put him in such a bad position. She made it look like he didn’t want to support her when he has very valid reasons to be afraid. After what he went through the first time in the Asteri dungeons for years and then again! I’m surprised he didn’t break down even more tbh. His feelings were so valid.
Bryce - SJM tried to do the “Aelin is always two steps ahead” thing with Bryce but honestly it didn’t work. A lot of the times I was side eyeing and was like “that’s convenient” Bryce was guessing a lot of times so that whole thing just didn’t work.
The plot was all over the place. The book really didn’t flow well.

For Dogust. The Cŵn Annwn, the red-eared white hounds of the Wild Hunt in Welsh mythology. Annwn, the Welsh Otherworld, is said to be either ruled by King Arawn (as cited in the Mabinogion, the earliest Welsh prose stories) or Gwyn ap Nudd (king of the Fair Folk in later medieval lore). Some say the hunt rides through the sky, chasing wandering spirits, others that their hunting grounds include the mountain of Cadair Idris, where hearing the baying of the hounds is a foretelling of death. "Cŵn" is plural for "hounds", the singular form is "Ci".
I'm sure they're good doggies who like ear skritches just like any other.

Bryce and Hunt already checked off the “We-chose-ourselves mates” from the SJM mate-scenario list
Guess what’s left are friendship mates and reluctant mates
Seems to line up with Gwynriel and Elucien
Two of which she has not featured in any of her books.

SJM Interview (Likely) Confirms Gwynriel Mates
I was watching old SJM interviews when I stumbled upon this Instagram live:
Tumblr media
Go to about 45:30 on YouTube and watch for a little over a minute if you want or here is a quick synopsis:
SJM says while writing the BCs for ACOSF she was finishing up HOSAB (CC2) at the same time. Her editor pointed out to her that she was mixing up terminology in the Azriel bonus chapter (technically she never stated Az’s BC, but the specific example she used is with faelights/firstlights, but faelights are only discussed in the Azriel BC, not the Feysand one) with CC terminology. She then goes to say that how hard it is to keep things straight when juggling two series at a time.
What does that have to do with Gwynriel though, you ask?
To that I will thank the lovely @yazthebookish for her beautiful analysis showing how SJM uses the same language to describe Bryce and Hunt’s mating bond behavior with that of Gwyn and Azriel’s behavior:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the nay-sayers that will say that Bryce and Hunt are not mates: please refer to the HOFAS book descriptions where SJM not only writes that Bryce wants to get back to her mate in the original one but in the updated version also writes how Hunt wants his mate back.
So let’s put it all together:
She admittedly says she was mixing things up between the Azriel bonus chapter and HOSAB
Bryce and Hunt’s (confirmed mates) behavior toward one another in HOSAB (and the HOSAB BC) is identical to that of Azriel and Gwyn’s
1 + 2 = 3 or in this case, SJM is telling us Azriel’s reactions to Gwyn are almost definitely because of a mating bond (and not just her being an evil, luring Lightsinger)
Some bonus math for you:
Add on to the other examples across universes that show SJM mating pairs having identical language to that of Gwynriel and that is further proof that the math is, in fact, mathing
I rest my case (for now), Your Honor.

Yall... we've got confirmation from Lidia that Bryce and Hunt are mates within the prologue!!

You know what this means? Azriel and Gwyn are more than likely mates as well given Sarah wrote Bryce and Hunt/Azriel and Gwyn scenes similarly.
