cannot believe i spent so long trying to work out when to pronounce 'wy' as 'oi' and when to pronounce it as 'wi-' and it turned out to be dialect
LOL yeah, that caught me out as a kid. In fairness there are times when we'd pronounce them the other way? I don't know the precise rules anymore, but I think if it's a word that starts with "Gwy-" you would usually pronounce it 'wi-' (think of words like 'gwynt' or 'gwydr', for example), while if the word naturally starts with 'wy-' you would usually pronounce it 'oi-' (like 'wyth' and 'wythnos'). BUT there are exceptions to those as well. Mostly it's dialect if you aren't sure!
That said I'm also gaily saying "Yes, in the south we pronounce it 'oi-'" but in fact the phonemes "wy", "oe" and "oi" are all pronounced subtly differently in the south! We are complex and contain multitudes (although it is 100% Fine if you just use the same pronunciation for each, all it means is people can hear you're second language which is considered Good, Actually)
Also! Do you want to know the fossilised Third Dialect Option?
It's now pretty much extinct, but the dialect once spoken in the south east was Gwenhwyseg. The south east, being the place Cardiff is and also closest to the London commuter belt, saw the biggest language losses, so while these days the dedicated work of activists since the 90s has seen a thriving Welsh speaking community now establish in Cardiff and also multiple Welsh language schools in the area, the native dialect has pretty much died out with the oldest generations. What's now spoken is a mix of Cymraeg Byw (the learner dialect) and the various dialects from across Wales as young people move to Cardiff.
But Gwenhwyseg, much like all other dialects of Welsh, had a lot of its own vocab, and certainly its own pronunciation quirks influenced by accent. And there are two big examples of this latter point which have clung on and survived through, of all things, place names in Newport and Cardiff that are still pronounced the Gwenhwyseg way, but other Welsh speakers all wince at and think are non-Welsh speakers fucking it up.
Example one: "ae". Ordinarily pronounced either 'ey' or 'eye'. In the word 'caer', a common part of Welsh placenames, it's pronounced 'kire'.
In Newport, the area near the old hillfort called the Gaer is pronounced "Gare". In Newport, Caerau Road - normally pronounced "kire-eye" - is pronounced "Carer" Road. This is correct for Gwenhwyseg pronunciation.
Example two: "wy". Ordinarily either 'wi' or 'oi', as established; but both north and south are agreed that it's one syllable, right?
In Cardiff, there is a road called Crwys Road. It's pronounced "Croo-iss" Road. This is correct for Gwenhwyseg pronunciation, which would say 'wy' as two syllables.
As I say, though, that's pretty much lost now, soon to be extinct. But still! Fun With Accents.

Y Hen Llinge and all that: Welsh in The Witcher Series (glossary)
This post is largely my GDrive notes on this subject, but I am a Welsh speaker and have noticed Welsh cropping up a lot in the Witcher series. I'm going to go into a few examples in this post- a word of warning though, there may be spoilers, which I'll mark with a SPOILER WARNING.
The Wiki List:
The wiki contains a glossary of Hen Llinge words alongside their real-world inspirations. Hen Llinge isn't based on Welsh alone, but also Irish, German, English and Latin (among others). The list on the wiki has the following terms marked down as being inspired by Welsh (which I have compiled):
abb (rivermouth), w. Aber
aevon (river) w. Afon
aep (son of) w. Ap
ar (of/on/by) w. Ar
ban (peak/summit) w. Ban (sometimes Fan)
bleidd (wolf) w. Blaidd
breoga (frog) w. Broga
caed (woods) w. Coed
caer/kaer (fortress) w. Caer
col (mountainpass) w. Dol
conyn (plantstalk) w. Coesyn
craag (rocks) w. Crag
darganfod (discovery) w. Darganfod
darl’len (read) w. Darllen
dhu (black) w. Du
dol (valley/dale) w. Dôl
gláeddyv (sword) w. Cleddyf
glean (bottom) w. Glan
gwyn (white) w. Gwyn
gwynbleidd (white wolf) w. Blaidd Gwyn
gwent (wind) w. Gwynt
hen (old) w. Hen
holl (all) w. Holl
marw (to die) w. Marw
ninnau (ourselves) w. Ninnau
pont (bridge) w. Pont
stráede (road) w. Stryd
tir (land) w. Tir
tor (tower) w. Twr
uniade (a joining (n.) w. Uniad
wen (white) w. -wen
ymladda (fight) w. Ymlad
The terms in the wiki are terms created for the TV series- the terms created for the books and games are similar, but the TV lexicon is much more expanded than the book and game corpuses.
Words on the Wiki not labelled as Welsh:
These terms are on the wiki but have no origin listed. I believe they likely have Welsh inspiration (especially the last one):
ghar (word) w. Gair
inis (island) w. Ynys (see also: Irish)
ysgarthiad (shit, excreted waste) w. Ysgarthiad
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
These terms are terms I have heard in the dialogue or seen in-game in Wild Hunt. They are not included in the wiki as they are game terms. They are also only possibly inspired by Welsh as I am not a dev, so I cannot be certain, however, I have chosen the ones I feel are likely inspired by Welsh in at least some capacity.
(SPOILER WARNING: references to Witcher 3 Characters and actions central to plot ahead!)
mor (very/how/as) w. Mor (from location Caer Morhen)
aval (apple) w. Afal (from personal name Aval’lach)
caniatad (permission) w. Caniatâd (from the spell that transforms Aval’lach back to elf, 14:27)
nevid (change) w. Newid (from the spell that transforms Aval’lach back to elf, 14:27)

mab (young man/son) w. Mab (from “Aen N'og Mab Taedh'morc”)
cor (choir) w. Côr (potentially a match, from “Aen N'og Mab Taedh'morc”)
me (me/ I) w. Mi (potentially a match, from “Aen N'og Mab Taedh'morc”)
y (the) w. Y (from location Aevon y Pont ar Gwennelen)
carraigh (rock) w. Carreg (from location Ard Carraigh)
llygad (eye) w. Llygad (from location Seidhe Llygad)
ess'tedd (meeting/to sit and meet) w. Eistedd (from “Darl'len, Aen Seidhe!”)
dol (valley) w. dol (from location name “Dol Niev’de”
niev (nine) w. nief (heaven) (from location name “Dol Niev’de”
This is just a glossary of terms for now- I plan to write a proper post about in-game texts at some point (though I am very busy right now with undergrad). I hope you enjoy this first segment at least! Let me know what you think about Welsh in games/media.
Tagging a few folks who might enjoy this post because some of the Welsh is straight up not changed. I found it quite funny in the magic spell cutscenes because I understood every word. Looking at you Keira Metz saying 'tair caeffyl gwyn' to summon 3 white horses!!!

Fire Emblem: Fated Elements Chapter 3: Gwynt, Kingdom of Air [Part 2]
"What the - Shadowbeasts?! Right here in Gwynt?!" Takumi exclaimed as his amber eyes widened in shock after seeing numerous Gwyntlans fleeing from the markets.
"Crap! We have to save everyone!" Kaori cursed and frantically searched for a weapon around the markets since her tome was not much of use in combat. Her light grey eyes shined bright when something caught her eye and flashed its metallic material at her. It was two steel swords, newly crafted by a blacksmith, The Princess of Gwynt approached the hiding man who seemed to be a blacksmith due to his black apron and dark grey helmet located above his head, with her gentle smile on to not frighten him. "Excuse me, sir. May I borrow those two swords right now, please?" Knowing who he is being spoken to, the blacksmith nods at her and allows her to take them. "I'll pay you back once we get rid of those monsters, I promise." The princess vowed with her gentle smile and the blacksmith nodded before hiding. Kaori brandished her blades into her battle stance. Takumi readied his wind arrow on his yumi as the two watched seven Shadowbeasts snarling and growling at them, their twisted forms oozing with darkness and malice.
"Do you remember their weak spot?" The sand-beige asked the archer. "Yes - it's the centre of their masks, right?" he responded. "Right. Here's my plan - I'll attack and distract them, whilst you deal with their weak spot, ok?" "Got it! Just leave it to me!" Takumi complied and Kaori took off by charging forward for the Shadowbeasts, her blades slicing through the air with deadly precision. Four Shadowbeasts lunged at her, their clawed limbs thrashing wildly as they attempted to strike her down. However, Kaori danced gracefully between them, her swords flashing in the fading light as she dodged and parried their attacks.
Takumi aimed with his bow by raising it at the sky and creating a rainstorm of arrows around him as two Shadowbeasts charged forward at him and made contact with his wind arrows. Each shaft found its mark with unerring accuracy, striking the Shadowbeasts in their bare skin, and eventually their weak spot, causing them to fall to the ground in defeat and explode into nothing.
Kaori continued to fight against the remaining Shadowbeasts that targeted her, which she then finished with clean slices of their limbs and scratches off their centre masks, turning them into nothing.
However, just as Kaori thought that the battle was over, she ran over to Takumi. Her eyes widened as a Shadowbeast was right behind the Hoshidan prince, preparing to swing its ugly arms during its sneak attack. "I GOT YOU!" The Gwyntlan princess jumped and flipped over his head just in time and slashed her blades at the last Shadowbeast, eventually saving the ash-blonde archer. "Thanks." Kaori smiled at him, then heard the crowd cheer for her and Takumi for saving the kingdom.
"Thank you, Lady Kaori! Thank you too, sir! We are forever in your debt!" An elderly lady came over to express her gratitude. "Yes, you have saved us from those monsters!" a young man grinned. The blacksmith came out of his hiding. "Lady Kaori, thank you and your companion for saving us all. About those swords - you may keep them, as you have rescued us." The sand-beige princess shakes her head with a smile. "It's alright, sir. I'm glad that there's no severe injuries." Everyone else then continued to cheer and express their gratitude before going back to their normal duties. Takumi then spoke as the citizens left.
"You know... You fought those Shadowbeasts pretty well. I barely noticed that you were dodging their attacks, as you were really good at it. How did you fight like that?!" He asked in amazement.
"I'm actually a Gladiatrix when I'm fighting. I'm not only studying and learning a lot more about Przek as a scholar." Kaori answered quite proudly, making him feel quite envious of how talented she was.
"Wow... A gladiatrix, a princess and a scholar all at once... You really are a hard-working person, aren't you? I don't mean to brag, but you're probably even more responsible and hardworking than my older brother..."
The two then walked away from the markets to the castle to inform Eiji. A proud smile plastered across the King's face as he spoke. "Thank you both. Thanks to you, Gwynt is in peace from the Shadowbeasts." The King expressed proudly, as both Kaori and Takumi smiled at him. "Thank you, Father. It is my duty, after all, to save our people." She bowed to her father. "I'm glad that no one is harmed." Takumi added as he put his bow away. Kaori continued to smile at the two, until it fell when she heard a familiar feminine voice.
"Oh? We have a guest here?" The mysterious voice led to two women, one was a queen who wore a light-green bodice dress; with her shoulders and collarbone being covered by her forest-green cloak and long, black hair flowing as she walked down the Castle steps, her golden crown shining against the remaining daylight. Her facial appearance remained quite still. The other is a sorceress, as she wears a skinny, yet voluptuous sorceress armour, consisting of a black bodice that exposes her bosom and bellybutton, and a plum-coloured tail cloak that is made out of feathers. She flicked her golden-brown hair and smiled coyly.
Noticing the two approaching their way, Kaori knelt down on one knee for respect.
"Queen Shizuka of Gwynt. And Her Loyal Advisor, Symphyona too." She introduced. Takumi is surprised to see the Queen and her Advisor appear in front of them, and bows in respect to them. "My deepest apologies. I am Prince Takumi of Hoshido, I am also Kaori's friend." The Gwyntlan princess couldn't help but blush at how he called her his friend. "It is a pleasure to meet you." Takumi smiled at Kaori, before looking at Queen Shizuka. His amber eyes slightly widen when he notices Symphyona's appearance, which he turns a bit red.
Shizuka's expression remained stone-cold when she glanced at the Hoshidan Prince and turned to her daughter. "Kaori," she spoke her name, but her advisor raised a hand to refrain her from speaking further. "It's alright, my lady." Symphyona smiled sweetly at Shizuka, then instantly glared at Kaori with a dirty, yet disgusted expression. "I have been told that you ran away from Gwynt, during your training." Kaori was taken aback, after she stood up, her eyes turning into a flame red for anger. "Well, that was simply because those Shadowbeasts were out there to kill me! They destroyed my training swords and I had no choice but to flee!" She argued, which then Symphyona muttered to herself. "Hmph. It's because of those cursed eyes that you were the main target..." A certain someone was able to hear the sorceress's muttering, and he became furious. He looks at Shizuka's advisor with a stern expression, feeling angered at what she had said about Kaori.
"Are you implying that because of Kaori's eyes, she is the target of the Shadowbeasts? That is a rather disgusting accusation to make on a young princess, Miss Symphyona." He continues to glare at her and continues to speak, "It's a terrible shame when the advisor of a Queen of a kingdom speaks such words about a young princess." Kaori's expression fell slightly as her father then backed his daughter up. "He's right, Symphyona. Please - Kaori has these eyes because it was gifted to her, you must understand that, and you know that the legend is true!" His response caused Symphyona to scoff in disgust.
"I don't have time to waste talking to fools like you. Let's go, Your Majesty." Symphyona glared and walked away, with Queen Shizuka by her side back inside the castle. The Hoshidan prince's eyes widened. After her remark towards him, Takumi calls her out in an intimidating manner, as he personally felt attacked when she compared him to a "fool". "Symphyona, you have no idea how much disrespect you are currently dishing out! To Kaori, who is the Princess of Gwynt, and also to me, who is a loyal friend of hers!" He clenched his fists in anger, and King Eiji placed a hand on his shoulder to calm him down. A disappointed expression took over his face.
"I deeply do apologise for Symphyona's behaviour. She has been like this ever since Kaori and I arrived here, even though I had numerous conversations with her about how to treat Kaori with respect, but she refused to listen." The Gwyntlan King sighed in disappointment, and Kaori hung her head down low in disappointment as well, her eyes turning into indigo for guilt, shame and sadness. Takumi sighed to calm himself down, "It's not your fault, Your Majesty. You did everything you could." He turns to Kaori and his amber eyes turn into a more concerning look when he notices Kaori's indigo eyes - he feels bad for her. "Kaori? Are you alright?" He asked. Kaori bit her lower lip in response, "She's right. I shouldn't have run away from my training... I still have yet to unlock my power, but so far, nothing's been happening...! Time is of the essence, and Przek will soon meet its downfall..."
Sympathising with her feelings, he went over to her and placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Hey, Kaori?" he smiles and tries to comfort her, despite being in an awkward situation. "I know you are trying your hardest to unlock your wind magic, but I can tell that you are worried that time will run out. But don't worry. I'll be by your side this entire time. I promise you, I won't let anyone, or anything, hurt you." She looks up at him with a small blush, until King Eiji intervenes. "Pardon me, but Prince Takumi is right, dear. You did what you had to do. I believe in my own daughter, and I know that one day you will unlock your powers so that you can seal off the Ancient Dragon so that you can succeed the throne after myself and your mother." Hearing this gave her a bit of hope, as she smiled at the King.
"Thank you, Father." She spoke, then looked down, "But knowing both Mother and Symphyona, they are strict in my training just to gain my power. I just worry that we would run out of time one day and that Uralto breaks off his sealing curse and destroys everything in his path, and -"
"Kaori. I'm certain that we're not going to run out of time. Even though that witch is extremely strict in your training, don't let that discourage you at all. You have your father, your friends and also... me, by your side." Takumi interrupts her and smiles in reassurance, "We'll make sure that Uralto and the Shadowbeasts don't threaten us, or Przek again. I promise you that." Kaori's eyes widened even more. "A-Are you sure?! I mean, I do appreciate that, but I don't want you to waste  your time on me again, a-after what I caused you...!" Eiji then chimed in, "Of course, Prince Takumi. Thank you for the offer - she'll take it!" Kaori turned round to her father, clearly shocked at this, "F-Father!"
Takumi lets out a chuckle and shakes his head with a smile at Kaori's response, "No, Kaori. It's not a waste of time at all. I'm willing to fight for my friends at any time, and you're one of them. You're one of the nicest, and most caring friends that I have ever met." He then turned his head around to face the King, and a confident expression took over him. "And Your Majesty? Don't worry, I won't let that witch ruin Kaori's future. For her, and I will make sure that Uralto doesn't destroy Przek." Eiji nodded with his signature kind smile. "Thank you, Prince Takumi." He then speaks to his daughter, "Now Kaori. Since we are all running out of time, I want you to go to the Kingdoms of Eldurra, Sagaria and Ziemia to convince the heirs of Przek to cooperate with us about the Sealing of the Ancient Dragon. And once that is finished, you must go to Pueo's Valley to convince him to bless him to unlock your power. You already have done so with the other Guardians, have you?" He instructed, and Kaori nodded.
"Yes. I have travelled to Luani's Plateau of Wars, Kiboko's Garden of Beauty and also Nyathi's Spring of Justice. Once I convince the heirs of Przek, I will go to Pueo's Valley of Winds to convince him to grant me my power." She explained.
"Eiji, I can only say this - you are a wise and benevolent King. And I'll make sure that we won't waste our time and delay the sealing of Uralto any further. I'll join Kaori to help er persuade the Przekian heirs to join forces with us." The ash-blonde-haired prince vowed and turned to gaze at the Gwyntlan Princess with a smile of reassurance. "Once again, Kaori, no need to rush to unlock your wind powers. I'm certain that you will accomplish it with the support of those whom you care about." Kaori nods and eventually smiles. "Thank you."
This pleased the King even more, not only because of Takumi's support but also because Kaori accepted it. "Now, it is getting quite late now. You may stay with us if you'd like. Or, if you wish to go back to Hoshido that is also fine with us. It is your choice, after all. You both may start your task tomorrow." Eiji informed. "Thank you, Your Majesty. I'd like to stay here for tonight so that Kaori and I can start our journey tomorrow. I'm willing to go to the extent of my abilities and powers, even if it might mean risking my own life." Takumi explained.
"Of course, you are already part of the family. Now, I would actually like to speak with you in private, if you're alright with this?" The King requested. "You... want to speak with me?" The prince of Hoshido questioned. "It's alright. I'll be speaking with my retainers and the Antiqua team. I'll guide you to your room when you're ready." Kaori smiled. "Alright then." Kaori separated her ways from her father and Takumi, whilst the latter followed the King back into the castle interior.
Once the two arrived at King Eiji's room, he then allowed Takumi to enter and sit down on the chair, whilst Eiji sat opposite him. "So what is it that you want to discuss with me about, Your Majesty?" Takumi asked, his own fingers fidgeting. Eiji gazed into the Hoshidan's eyes. "I just would like to have a casual chat with you, regarding my daughter, Kaori." Eiji answered. "Kaori? Why?" The ash-blonde tilt his head in confusion, causing the King to chuckle quietly as he continued to gaze deeper into his amber eyes. "Well, allow me to word this question properly."
"Have you ever encountered her in Hoshido when you were very young?"

6. Polly Davies Nature Friendly farmer
Photographed by Matt Horwood Tell us something about yourself that nobody else knows. At this time of year in Jan and Feb, the cattle are in and most of my sheep are in.  The noise of the farmland bird murmerations is completely magical, it feels to me like listening to the wind.
What do you enjoy doing in your own time?  I enjoy doing Pilates  and life drawing - but not at the same time!
Tell us a bit about your work as a farmer? What do you love most about it? I believe it is a privilege to be a farmer - you are completely connected to the seasons and weather.  It grounds you like no other job.
If you had to pick one thing, what are you most passionate about?Connecting people with their food and improving understanding of where food comes from.
What makes you angry?  Litter - it is infuriating!
If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be? My 8 year old not getting up so early - every single day of the year…. (I feel like you would be looking for bigger solutions to the world problems…. I am sure I could come up with some if I had more sleep!)
Do you feel connected to nature and/or wildlife and if so, tell us a bit about when you first found an interest or felt connected. The natural world is so complex, I feel like I am always learning. I can’t remember the first time I felt connected - but last autumn was a  great revelation for me - as I started spotting all the farm fungi - I am not sure if last year was a good year - but I felt the more I looked the more I saw.  On the farm being organic and farming with nature we are able to give space for nature to do its thing and the results were just amazing - waxcaps of all types - field mushrooms and puff balls - to name a few I spotted.   ***
6. Polly Davies Ffarmwr Natur-bositif
Dywedwch rywbeth amdanoch eich hun nad oes neb arall yn ei wybod. Yr adeg yma o'r flwyddyn ym mis Ionawr a Chwefror, mae'r gwartheg i mewn a'r rhan fwyaf o'm defaid i mewn. Mae sŵn murmerau adar ffermdir yn gwbl hudolus, mae'n teimlo i mi fel gwrando ar y gwynt.
Beth ydych chi'n mwynhau ei wneud yn eich amser eich hun? Rwy'n mwynhau gwneud Pilates a bywluniadu - ond nid ar yr un pryd!
Dywedwch ychydig wrthym am eich gwaith fel ffermwr? Beth ydych chi'n ei garu fwyaf amdano? Rwy’n credu ei bod yn fraint bod yn ffermwr – rydych yn gwbl gysylltiedig â’r tymhorau a’r tywydd. Mae'n sail i chi fel dim swydd arall.
Pe bai'n rhaid i chi ddewis un peth, beth ydych chi'n angerddol amdano fwyaf? Cysylltu pobl â’u bwyd a gwella dealltwriaeth o ble mae bwyd yn dod.
Beth sy'n eich gwylltio? Sbwriel - mae'n warthus!
Pe gallech chi newid un peth am y byd, beth fyddai hwnnw? Fy mhlentyn 8 oed ddim yn codi mor gynnar - bob un diwrnod o'r flwyddyn…. (Rwy'n teimlo y byddech chi'n chwilio am atebion mwy i broblemau'r byd…rwy'n siŵr y gallwn feddwl am rai pe bawn i'n cael mwy o gwsg! )
Ydych chi'n teimlo'n gysylltiedig â natur a/neu fywyd gwyllt ac os felly, dywedwch ychydig wrthym am pryd y daethoch o hyd i ddiddordeb gyntaf neu pan wnaethoch deimlo cysylltiad. Mae byd natur mor gymhleth, rwy'n teimlo fy mod bob amser yn dysgu. Ni allaf gofio'r tro cyntaf i mi deimlo'n gysylltiedig - ond roedd yr hydref diwethaf yn ddatguddiad gwych i mi - wrth i mi ddechrau sylwi ar holl ffyngau'r fferm - nid wyf yn siŵr a oedd y llynedd yn flwyddyn dda - ond teimlais po fwyaf yr edrychais po fwyaf a welais. Gan fod y fferm yn organig ac yn ffermio gyda byd natur rydym yn gallu rhoi lle i fyd natur wneud ei beth ac roedd y canlyniadau yn anhygoel - capiau cwyr o bob math - madarch maes a pheli pwff - i enwi rhai welais i.

My husband always seems to make a beeline for the highest point of anywhere we visit, last Tuesday was no exception, we headed for Pentre Ifan a Neolithic burial chamber with a precariously balanced stone slab and then on to an aptly named car park at Bwlch-Gwynt (meaning windy gap) to walk up Foel Eryr in the Preseli Hills in Wales. As we got there the weather closed in and suddenly we were shrouded in mist and squally showers. After waiting in the car for about half an hour for the rain to pass we decided to brave it and head up Foel Eryr which is the second highest peak at 468 metres. Thankfully and luckily for me my husband was content with walking to the second most highest point! As we battled with the wind on the ascent I have to admit I was thinking to myself and questioning my husband as to why we were even bothering to climb this peak as we could see nothing but cloud all around us and it felt pretty grim, even our dog wanted to head back to the comfort of the car! Then as if by magic the sun seemed to break through the cloud just as we reached the summit and we were rewarded with spectacular views all around. This watercolour painting is taken from a photo (see second to last photo) I took at the top looking towards Newcastle Emlyn close to where we were staying and just at the very right hand edge of my picture going out of shot is the highest point Foel Cwmcerwyn at 536 metres. Foel Eryr means 'Hill of Eagle', though sadly we didn't see any eagles, apparently they are no longer resident here. But I've decided to call this picture after this hill and you can see why as you can see for miles (on a clear day!) it's as if you are seeing what an Eagle might see soaring through the sky. The first image is my rough watercolour sketch which I hope to use to create a bigger painting, continue to scroll across if you'd like to see some photos I took that day... #PentreIfan #welshlandscape #preselihills #Pembrokeshire #Wales #BwlchGwynt #FoelEryr #stunning views #watercolourpainting #inspirationalplaces #highestpoint #halftermbreak #isleofwightartist #sharonouldart (at Preseli Mountain Top) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkY8W1cLgFC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
