Last one from the archives. A Korean pork restaurant - 2011. It took me a while to get around the fact that you often have to go to restaurants based on the variety of meat on offer in Korea - but was very happy when I was introduced to Sangyupsal. I ate a lot of Sangyupsal when I lived in Korea. Not sure why I chose to do a study of this at the time, but I’m still quite happy with the lettering. www.meroedraws.com #illustration #inkonpaper #freehand #architecture #streetscene #korea #masan #gyeongsangnamdo #southkorea #porkrestaurant #handlettering #penandink https://www.instagram.com/p/Cfl7-6gMin0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hangover Cures Korean Swear By
1. Bean Sprout Soup
Tumblr media
Bean sprout soup was voted number one for food hangovers craved after a night of heavy drinking among office workers. Many restaurants serve this dish Jeonju style in an earthenware pot with rice. It is usually served with a side of moju which is a low alochol drink prepared by boiling makgeolli and other medicinal herbs.
2. Dried Pollack Soup
Tumblr media
Dried pollack soup is a mildly seasoned but flavorful hangover soup. A classic dried pollack soup is usually prepared by pre-soaking shredding dried pollack. The soup is seasoned with salt and pepper. It also contains tofu cubes and silky-smooth egg ribbons.
3. Soup with Congealed Oxblood
Tumblr media
Although the name of this soup doesn’t sound appetizing, it has a mild acquired flavor. The texture of congealed oxblood is smooth with the texture of firm pudding. The soup stock is made by boiling ox bones and is seasoned with soybean paste.
4. Pufferfish Soup
Tumblr media
Pufferfish has to be prepared only by licensed chefs who have received intense training to eliminate the toxin from the fish. Most restaurants offer this soup in spicy and non-spicy version. Usually, the non-spicy version is preferred for those seeking to chase their hangovers. This dish is especially popular in Busan.
5. Pork Spine Soup
Tumblr media
This is a rich and spicy pork soup with meaty chunks of pork spine. Another name for this dish is gamjatang. It is usually served communal style in a large pot an is dished out into individual portions in earthenware bowls to make sure its piping hot until the end of the meal. Local usually mix the rice in the broth while enjoying this dish.
6. Golden Freshwater Clam Soup
Tumblr media
This dish is a specialty in Gyeongsangnamdo Province. It is a clear soup made by boiling golden freshwater clams and simply seasoned with salt. Alothough the clams are small in size compared to other clam species but they are just as sweet and release lots of flavors to the broth.

Koreans swear
Being Korean and all, I know for a fact that Koreans swear. Haha. Our swearing is probably more colorful that English swearing, and I'd probably put our creativity with swearing second behind Russia.
I was told by SOMEONE NOT KOREAN, OMG, why do subtitles with Koreans have swearing in it, because clearly Koreans can't swear. LOL
TT Are you confusing us with Japanese people? I've taken Japanese and swears soften in the language over time. The only true swear word I could find when leafing through a Japanese dictionary one time was a word for "dick" basically, but it was labeled "antiquated"
There is Baka and Aho, (aho is a shortening of asshole) and this is about the best you can do in Japanese. and aho in Japanese means more like "a bit temporarily dumb." "daft" is probably a good equivalent. And it's used effectionally too. (depending on where you are" I know, someone is going to say "But, but Shimatta" Haha. Only in anime. It's only anime speak. I've been told over and over again by Japanese who giggle and laugh at the idea that word is used in everyday life.
Korean... there is a whole movie that never got translated about a Korean swearing contest, where this grandmother is caught swearing by a pond, and then gets onto a game show to win money to come up with the most colorful swears. It's hilarious—if you understand Korean.
Korean swearing is more colorful than Thailand, Japan and China. (I checked with Pinoy too... and yeah, more colorful than the Philippine languages my friends knew of...) It's so bad that swear words and slang that were in Naver have been excised, which I find hilarious. Korea is so deadset that international people won't learn the level of Korean swearing, they are willing to take it out of Naver's dictionary.
And the common swear words you know–that's only the tip of the iceberg there. Haha.
When a country gets invaded so many freaking times, you're going to invent swear words.
The upside of Korean swear words is not only are they colorful, but often they aren't particularly sexist, racist, etc. Occasionally tied to food... but lol Good luck finding them. They've gotten deleted from popular dictionaries.
Also, BTW, Koreaboos suck, because they are willing to lecture at Koreans about how Koreans don't produce BL media at all, OMG, and you know what "Homosexuals" don't exist in Korea because that was an import or something. And OMG, I just wanted to relax with Korean dramas and not talk about politics (have you watched Korean dramas????? Almost every single last drama is political in some way.) And OMG, why are you, a Korean, talking about politics—we never quit. We're still engaged in politics? Oh and Koreans don't really swear and stuff because you know, Asians are always polite like the depiction in the super racist Madame Butterfly.
Also, OMG, why are you soooo upset when I say Kon'nichiwa, Chingus on videos.
Like Chingu-deul is so hard to remember and shit. And why do I have to use "friend". You are so mean for reminding me that Japan occupied Korea and Koreans are still upset about that. I mean, Holocaust doesn't mean anything, clearly, Jews are over that so why can't you Koreans be over that and my daughter's friend when she went to China was married to someone Korean, so clearly there are NO problems between Korea and China, because you see the majority of Koreans in China HAVE to be South Korean, not North Korean. You are mean for talking real facts.
There is a Korean swear word for half-ethnicity... but that's about as severe as you can get. TT The Korean ranking system.
When I was in South Korea... Appa called me Kongjunim, but also three swear words, probably thinking I didn't understand. lol This is why Gyeongsangnamdo people get their reputations...

WELCOME HOME, SONG JAEBEOM!
You've got the keys, unlock your new world!
NAME. SONG JAEBEOM. DATE OF BIRTH. 19961205. OCCUPATION. TATTOO ARTIST, CO-OWNER OF TATTOO SHOP. NATIONALITY. SOUTH-KOREAN.
FREE FORM.
(tw: parental death, drug use mentions )
song jaebeom was born in daegu, gyeongsangnamdo, south korea, the second child and only son of the people that were technically his parents, even if they didn’t do much to fulfill the role. his older sister, chaehee, raised him mostly despite only being two years older. growing up, life wasn’t fun or easy as the family spent a majority of his childhood very poor, homeless, or bouncing from home to home of his parents' friends. he was 16 when they passed away suddenly and it was him and his sister. his sister worked hard to make sure he graduated high school, sacrificing her dreams of university instead to apprentice as a tattoo while working to pay bills, keep food on the table, and deep her little brother from dying as a result of his long standing drug addiction that their parents and his girlfriend at the time seemed hell bent on keeping him in the middle of..
it took years for him to get sober, more than a few attempts along the way. he bounced from job to job, always having a bed at his sister’s apartment, even if he was never allowed to be left alone there for too long, nor with the niece that was now crawling around.
he figured it out eventually (well, his sister did, but he had to put work in too), and followed in his sister’s footsteps in order to be allowed to work in the small, illegal shop she cared so much for. even if many things are still confusing, the man now known as aidynn keeps trying.

Again, it’s strange seeing old work with fresh eyes. As our flat in London is small I’ve stored the bulk of my work and valuables (art books mainly) in air tight boxes in my parents’ garage and periodically review to see if it’s time to part with anything. The second reel image (I think) is from 2011, a view of the busiest road where I lived in Masan, Gyeongsangnam-Do, South Korea for 2 years. I think it’s aged pretty well. The scale is decent leading into the background. www.meroedraws.com #illustration #penandink #masan #freehand #gyeongsangnamdo #southkorea #2011 #streetscenes #inkonpaper https://www.instagram.com/p/CfjFiryMfdo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Trip with Vivian to Geoje & Gwangju (early June 2017) - part 2
- Oedo Island (Geoje) - a deserted island sculpted painstakingly by an elderly couple to become a beautiful place now open to tourists.
- Arts Cultural Centre (Gwangju) - Gwangju is really starting to grow on me. City of culture and arts, values like social justice and democracy.
- Hanjeongsik with stir-fry pork (Gwangju)
Thanks to Vivian who planned the trip for both of us and drove us around :D Good trip before she heads to US <3
