People claim "You just like Chris because you grew up with Sonic X" when me and my sister love Chris and watched it for the first time ever last year (in both english and japanese) and it's usually the people who did grow up with it who hate Chris despite not watching the show in years.

My sister hated the main character of Mysterious Benedict Society because he was a "blank slate" and then realized as she got older that she related so hard that she thought that, and learned to love the character.

It's completely possible they were annoyed at Chris as children and never got over it, and now that not liking a character or product has to be a moral choice, they justify it with "bad writing." The morals of a character aren't the morals of a real person and aren't supposed to be an example. They're a fictional character and as soon as you judge them morally you're already lost. Once you start thinking "what would I do" you're way to far gone. In the heat of the moment, with the same life and experience of this person, you'd do the exact same thing.

And "bad writing" isn't even an excuse because on an objective level it's good writing. He has an arc, which is completed in the season 2 finale when chris and his family addresses his problem and they all decide to put in their best to fix it. and as a kid who's 12 years old that's incredibly mature to realize and fix your mistake. And when he comes back in season 3 the problem Isn't there anymore because he grew past it.

I don't care if he's a rich kid, he's a fictional character. I don't care if he's "being selfish" he's a fictional character.

I saw someone say "I don't care if it's a realistic way to act, it's on the writers to make it not be annoying" and sorry if it was annoying for you because I know many people who watched it, both english and japanese, and weren't bothered by his character in the slightest. That's not on the writers. That's on you, and if you personally find the character annoying you don't need to blame the writers or the show, just say you don't like it and move on. Watch something else, there are 5, almost 6, Sonic TV shows that exist, go watch another one. Although you may be disappointed in the actions of Tails and Amy, two beloved characters with the same, if not worse attachment and abandonment issues fixated on Sonic, Amy who, also being 12, never got over it or addressed/had a finished arc like Chris did.

And honestly, if you're so worried about the morals, actions, selfishness and trauma responses of a 12 year old, maybe a series surrounding and about children isn't for you.
