Conjunction 85–31

Óleo sobre lienzo de cáñamo
160 x 120,3 cm
Tina Kim Gallery

Ha Chong-Hyun came to prominence with his Conjunction series in the early 1970s. These early experiments have led him to build his signature style, pushing the paint from the back to the front of hemp cloth. As a leading member of the movement known as Dansaekhwa, or “monochrome painting”, he has consistently used material experimentation and innovative studio processes to redefine the role of…

Artificial Intelligence for a Better Future An Ecosystem Perspective on the Ethics of AI and Emerging Digital Technologies by Bernd Carsten Stahl
At some point in our lives, I am sure most of us have had some type of interaction with either Siri or Alexa. Be honest, have you ever said “Thank you” after they answered a question of yours or provided you with some information you were looking for? I have and now I am wondering why. Is it just a part of our human nature to respond that way and exhibit some sort of politeness when someone (or something) does something for us? Though Siri and Alexa have somewhat human-sounding voices, they are still only machines. Yes, they are programmed to respond to the “thank you”, but there are no other feelings or emotions behind it. Authors S. Shyam Sundar and Mengqi Liao refer to this in their article “Calling BS on ChatGPT: Reflections on AI as a Communication Source” as the “Eliza Effect”. This effect highlights how we project human attributes, such as understanding and empathy, to machines and AI. With this, the lines between humans and AI get blurred. When I think about it, that may be the reason Siri and Alexa work so well. If humans already apply these types of attributes to AI, then why not create a form of AI that gives even more of a human feel? These questions and more about human-machine interaction have been asked for decades, but even more, questions have arisen since the introduction of the growing AI platform, ChatGPT, as well as the growing technological landscape of artificial intelligence in general.
ChatGPT can be used in a variety of ways, but probably one of the most common ways it is used is in writing. In minutes and sometimes seconds, the platform is capable of writing papers based on different topics just by giving it a few keywords. This has raised concerns in multiple spaces, most popularly the academic space as many worry it can be used by students for their assignments. Another space where there is a growing concern is the field of journalism where writing is probably the most popular skill in the field. Specifically, what does this mean for human writers and communicators? Many argue that ChatGPT does not produce originality or creativity. Unlike humans, that is what it lacks. Furthermore, there are concerns that ChatGPT is not concerned with checking for accuracy, therefore Sundar and Liao stress that there are “concerns in industry and academia that ChatGPT might accelerate the spread of misinformation”.
Though humans can be influenced, we also have brains of our own that are capable of attempting to resist that influence. AI does not have that same power and malicious actors use that weak spot to target specific groups and continue to spread that misinformation. While some social media platforms and governments have taken measures to regulate AI, more is still needed. Even more, just like everything else, individual awareness is crucial. As technology advances at such a rapid pace it almost feels impossible to get ahead of it with policies and regulations, but like previously stated in a prior reading, that is why we need politicians who have an at least understanding of technology because without that we will further be left in the dust.
Though we have discussed the concerns of AI, it is not all bad and there are so many ways AI has helped us. One thing mentioned in “Machine Cleaning of Online Opinion Spam: Developing a Machine-Learning Algorithm for Detecting Deceptive Comments” is the detection of deception. According to research, humans are not that good at detecting deception, but with the use of a proposed algorithm, this can be rectified. I have also read many individuals with ADHD, specifically students, describing how the platform has helped them with reading comprehension, something that is often a struggle for those with ADHD. AI is definitely not all bad even if that may be most of what we hear, however, though it can do good, it still requires regulation.

A word of caution regarding denunciation of Hyun Jin nim (2010)
A word of caution regarding denunciation of Hyun Jin nim Damian J. Anderson June 5, 2010
Perhaps many of you are aware, but one of Father's time tested tactics to test the mettle of a man is to send him to the woodshed, figuratively speaking.
Do you remember how Dr. Bo Hi Pak was publicly sent away to Japan? What did Dr. Pak do in Japan? Rather than bemoan his fate, he became very involved in the Japanese church and wrote two books.
What happened to Rev. Chong Jik Woo who was the regional director in Washington DC? He, along with many elder Koreans, was sent to a third world country as a national messiah, after 40 days in Chung Pyung, in his case, Bolivia. What did he do? He absconded with a large amount of public money and a Japanese sister.
What happened to General Kim who was sent back to Korea? She dropped off the map.
What happened to Mrs. Joo Yeon Amrine who was very publicly denounced in the church? She is still carrying out her ministry in Korea, with a substantial following in the church and in the public arena in Korea.
What happened to Hyun Jin nim when he was denounced? He is fulfilling his responsibility as he sees fit, according to his conscience, despite a global firestorm of condemnation.
BE VERY CAREFUL when you judge someone who has apparently been denounced by Father. This is when he sees the true heart of those who claim loyalty to him. He sees the servile obsequious attitudes of so many church members and leaders, They are so flatteringly serving to someone in favor, but they will happily denounce someone once they are out of favor and not in the right meetings, the right breakfast conferences, the right ceremonies. What a bunch of !@#$ %^and* hypocrites!
How would your tune change if tomorrow Father were to turn around and say that Hyun Jin nim were after all following his instructions? It would not be the first time.
BE VERY CAREFUL ... for sin is crouching at your door.
