Adrigami Week Day 6: Obligations
@mlshipfleet
A distant rumble mingled with the sound of screaming drew Kagami’s attention away from the menu with a small sigh.
Across the table, Adrien’s kneed jiggled anxiously, ringed finger drumming against the tablecloth as he pretended not to notice the sounds of the battle going on outside.
“It was nice out, today,” Adrien said as a burning tire rolled past the window. “Very...humid. And warm...but not too warm, you know?”
“You want to go out there and help, don’t you?”
“No no; Carapace and Rena Rouge said they would cover for me tonight,” Adrien said, taking a nervous sip of his water. “I’m fine; totally-”
“Adrien-”
“We are not going to postpone your birthday dinner,” Adrien insisted. “...for the fourth time.”
“Adrien, there is a bloody dragon rampaging through downtown Paris-”
“And Ladybug is more than equipped to handle it without my help,” Adrien said, shaking his head. “She’s gotten on fine without me in the past; I can’t imagine she would need me now.”
“If you say so,” Kagami said, eyes returning to her menu even as she was painfully aware of her boyfriend’s fidgeting across the table. A few, tense moments of silence passed before Kagami closed her menu with a small sigh. “Go.”
“Kagami-”
“Your teammates are getting knocked around like footballs in a World Cup,” Kagami said, trying a reassuring smile. “Go; I’ll be here when you’re done.”
Adrien glanced between Kagami and the battle going on outside, chewing his lip as he mulled it over for a second. “...I’ll make it quick.”
“I’m sure you will,” Kagami said, leaning up into a hurried kiss on the cheek as Adrien darted out of the building. She watched him run into a side-street, disappearing as Chat Noir vaulted over the rooftops as he headed towards the battle in progress.
“More wine, mademoiselle?”
“Leave the bottle,” Kagami said, draining the rest of her drink in one long pull.
“Hoshi dake...ga mitsumeteru kanasii yoru ni wa…” Kagami sung under her breath, words slurring ever so slightly as she fumbled for her house keys. “Jibun wo tashikame takute kimi ni kuchiduke shit...shit...shit/”
The problem with being able to afford all the wine she could drink was that there was nothing stopping Kagami from drinking all the wine she could afford. And after the akuma battle raged on long past Adrien’s food had gone cold, Kagami had acquainted herself more than a few long-necked beauties as the city burned down around her. After living in Paris for most of her life, the threat of Hawkmoth’s temper tantrums had worn off, so she thought nothing of carrying Adrien’s dinner home in a doggy bag, humming under her breath as she wobbled down the streets lined with burning cars.
“Habataku tori no youni...kagayaki no naka de…” Kagami sang as she kicked the door open. “Kaze ni nare~!”
The empty silence of their townhouse greeted her as she wobbled through the front door, shucking her shoes and shooting her reflection a dirty glare. “What’s with that bitter frown on your face, punk? Don’t tell me...you resent your boyfriend for running off to save the city every other day? Jealous that his work makes him miss your birthday? Tch...ungrateful little brat…”
Letting out a deep sigh, Kagami, stumbled up the steps, already anticipating the hangover that would follow in only a few hours. Passing her bedroom, Kagami cracked open the takeout box, gnawing on the corner of Adrien’s steak as she nudged the trap to the skylight open. In the distance, she could see the last gasp of a dragon akuma as it vanished, a wave of brightly colored ladybugs washing over the city.
“Woo,” Kagami said sarcastically, tearing off a piece of Adrien’s steak as she settled back in a deck chair. “And so...once again...the day is saved…”
Even the taste of lukewarm filet mignon wasn’t enough to quell the kicked puppy feeling that creeped up on Kagami as she waited for her boyfriend to return home. Having grown up on missed birthdays and cancelled plans, Kagami thought that her adult relationships would be free of eating dinner by herself.
Unfortunately, her significant other was a superhero.
“Heyyyyy.”
Speaking of which…
Kagami tilted her head backwards, steak hanging out of her jaws as she saw Chat Noir standing behind her, a sufficiently guilty look on his upside down face. “You...are late.”
“You are drunk,” Chat Noir laughed sitting cross legged next to her chair. “You get home okay?”
“No...sadly I perished on the way home,” Kagami muttered through a mouthful of meat. “You are speaking with a hungry and angry spirit.”
“Is there anything I can do to appease this angry spirit?” Chat Noir asked, laying his chin on the chair beside her. “...I’m sorry.”
“I know,” Kagami said, resting a hand on his head.
“You know I don’t mean to keep cancelling on you like this,” Chat Noir muttered. “It’s just-”
“You have an obligation to the people of this city,” Kagami sighed. “I can’t resent you for that…”
“Really?” Chat Noir said, sitting up. “Not even a little?”
“...well, maybe just a touch,” Kagami said, chewing on the corner of her lip. “It’s not...it’s not you...I just resent that I can’t seem to have a normal date with my boyfriend without the city ripping you away from me.”
“I know,” Chat Noir sighed. “Trust me; I know how much it sucks to have your loved ones bail on you for work...and I may have an obligation to this city but...I have an obligation to you too.”
Chat Noir raised her hand, kissing the back of it as he looked up at her.
“The only obligation you have is to end this fight however you can,” Kagami said, running a hand through his hair. “If the worst I can say about you is that you’re too devoted to the well-being of others, then I suppose I’m luckier than a great many people.”
“Kagami-”
“I’ll sleep much easier when Hawkmoth isn’t derailing my birthday plans anymore,” Kagami said, leaning in and kissing her boyfriend on the forehead. “I have half a mind to run after you next time if only to vent my frustration…”
“Well...funny you should mention that,” Chat Noir said, reaching behind his back. “I know I already got you the necklace, but...well, I figured I should get you something to go along with it.”
“If this is you proposing, you might want to wait until I’m sober...and not loaded with steak,” Kagami giggled as Chat Noir held out a smooth, octagonal box.
“I actually had another proposition in mind,” Chat Noir said, cracking the case open and revealing an ornately crafted necklace. “How would you like to spend some more quality time together?”
“I have to say, Chat, your girlfriend is…enthusiastic,” Ladybug said, wincing as the newly minted Red Ryu drove her blade into the wall next to a terrified akuma’s head, eyes glinting with manic glee.
“I hope you’re watching, Hawkmoth,” Red Ryu said, teeth glinting as she dragged her sword down the wall next to the Akuma’s cheek. “Because I want you to know the face of the woman who’s going to rip your Miraculous off your trembling body and expose you as the charlatan you really are!”
“She’s got a lot of pent up anger to work out,” Chat Noir said as the akuma frantically ripped its object off, throwing it down and running away with Red Ryu hot on its heels. “...a lot.”
