Operation Relocation!
These Brithys crini caterpillars were found in my Grandma’s garden, eating her hippeastrums. Considering my Grandma hates caterpillars, and squahes every grub she sees, I staged a rescue mission. We collected all the grubs, put them in a jar, and brought them home. Now, they’re happily munching away at our Spider lillies ♥
Brithys crini, or the “Lilly Borer”, is quite the peculiar cutworm (family Noctuidae). Similar to leaf miners, the caterpillar will burrow into the leaf, feasting on the flesh with the transulcent epidermis on top (Seen Here). This caterpillar will also bore into the stems of lillies.
This caterpillar is very destructive, but even then, I couldn’t let it die...
