This would be a headshot of Edmontosaurus annectens, the last of the hadrosaurid dinosaurs to roam North America. In the past, I would have drawn this dinosaur with fleshy cheeks covering the teeth, but then I learned that it might not have possessed such cheeks after all. If this turns out to be the case, it’s a look I’ll have to get used to.

These are sketchbook studies of Edmontosaurus annectens, which was among the last of the “duck-billed” hadrosaurid dinosaurs to roam North America during the Cretaceous Period. Living 68 to 66 million years ago, it would have been a contemporary of Triceratops and T. rex, and probably a favorite prey item for the latter.

The giant hadrosaurid Magnapaulia browsing apart from it’s herd, not bothered at all by a resting tyrannosaur thanks to it’s sheer size. With a size of ~12,5m this herbivore is not to be trifled with.

Ornithopods are really cool, I love the diversity of hadrosaurs and Olorotitan is a pretty neat and pretty big one. Since hadrosaurs are often referred to as the cows of the cretatious, I thought of frolicing cows when they get on the pasture after a long winter while coming up with the pose. Also since Olorotitan means ‘giant swan’ I chose the colors based on the black necked swan.
