My thoughts on Dr. Stone’s S03E01 (“New World Map”)

(Safe to read for anime-only folks.)

My thoughts after watching Season Three, Episode One:

01. The first two lines we ever hear in this season, THIS season, is Senku saying, "This scenery takes me back. I'm absolutely bawling" while he and the others are flying to Ishigami Village. Which I'm SURE is a direct reference to when he stood over Byakuya's grave, said "this takes me back," and cried the very first tear we've ever seen Senku shed... at his father's, Ishigami Byakuya's, grave :') Very, very well-done already, and it's only been two lines so far! :O

02. Chrome is NOT willing to let Ryusui have his village, haha! XD

03. I know Senku was looking to the side probably because he rope helped him navigate the balloon downwards, and stuff... but Chrome tossed the rope to Kohaku, so he should be looking somewhere in her direction, and I'm gonna choose to believe he was looking right at her! :D

04. The production quality in this first scene is top-notch! And of course we're getting a short clips show :) It's pretty cool to see what Ryusui was doing right before he was petrified! :O

05. The kids and adults are so excited to see Senku! :) He even has a hand on a little girl's head, and he's smiling; aww! :D And another little girl asked him to play, AND he said agreed! That is so sweet! :) I HAVE to remember this for my fanfic! :D

06. Apparently, "Come. We'll show you around Ishigami Village," is Kohaku code for, "Come, I'm going to give you a walking tour of why Senku's so awesome" XD

07. He has a globe in his laboratory... that's a nice detail! Something else I can use in my fanfic! :)

08. Ryusui teleported from the laboratory to the shed of science XD

09. What's Ginro holding in his right hand? Is it a tool for smoothing the wood? :O

10. A ship building team and an oil searching team, both working towards the goal of sailing and finding out the truth behind the petrification! :)

11. I must say, I'm not feeling the opening song of Dr. Stone: New World. It's too fast for me, and it doesn't help that I don't know the English translation of the lyrics yet, so it doesn't have any personal meaning for me, although of course I like seeing my favorite characters, and certain new characters that will be introduced later on in the season :) ...Well, except that big hat guy. I know his name, but I don't like him... -_-

12. The second-to-the-last shot of the OP is really nice. At the end of the previous seasons' three OPs, Senku was always, always alone. But in this season's OP, he's with so many people - Suika, Kohaku, Ukyo, Kinro, Ginro, Gen, Nikki, Ryusui, Francois, Kaseki, Yuzuriha, Chrome, Yo, and Taiju. He really, truly isn't alone anymore - he has friends by his side :)

13. Ah, the title of the first episode of Season Three... New World Map! :) And the title is on paper now! :D

14. It is so cool that they have enough metal now that they can use some of it on things that aren't vital to their scientific goals, but are just little things that make life a bit better, like those metal food covers! :)

15. Ryusui... what you're imagining ain't what you're getting... XD

16. Grilled fish, grilled fish soup, grilled fish salad, grilled fish desert, grilled fish... something XD Small fishes inside big fishes! :O

17. Small detail, but I like that Senku addresses Jasper and Turquoise by name :) I suppose it's too bad that they... WEREN'T attacked? XD

18. Ryusui is SO determined to find food! XD Poor guy... And Senku's being quite encouraging! :D

19. Kohaku! ^_^ Kohaku's flying!! Yay! :D She's so happy and thrilled! AND prepared; she has her sword and new shield on her even though she's hanging from a hot-air balloon! :O

20. Senku casually said she should stop freaking out like a child, but he looks pleased AND he called her "lioness!" Ah, it's been WAY too long... :) Kohaku noticed, too! :D

21. Finally, a shot with just Senku and Kohaku! They're talking about the possibility of finding oil :)

22. I wonder why that forest stood out to Kohaku? She's seen a lot of forests, and even on the hot-air balloon, she would have seen bunch of trees already. Maybe cedar is rare for the villagers? Or maybe something about how the trees looked made her think they were noteworthy or useful? :O

23. High-quality animation AND new graphics - they're really showing what they've got in this first episode! :D

24. First, Kohaku and Chrome worked as a team to find the cedar forest, and then Ryusui and Ukyo worked as a team to find that feral goat herd. And the way he showed genuine respect and care to that goat was so Ukyo :)

25. But... are they supposed to let the blood out in the water like that? I thought you weren't supposed to do that because the bacteria would go into the water and negatively affect the fish there... or maybe that's just for guts and innards and stuff, but not blood? Or maybe that's just when it comes to fish? Don't know... :O

26. Sigh, Senku writing and Kohaku pointing, with Chrome and Ukyo and Ryusui, making a map of the new world together... :) It's so nice to see this in detail and color! :D

27. The villagers were impressed by the map! :) Although, Ryusui, you could have been more tactful; I'm sure the villagers would have also liked more variety in their diet... -_-

28. This is the second time we've seen that particular elderly woman show her relief that nobody will starve to death anymore... poor woman... :( And something I hadn't considered was that anime lends room for empathy when it comes to voices. Turquoise said pretty much the same thing to the world woman, but it seemed more dismissive/annoyed to me in the manga and more empathetic in the anime :)

29. Ah, so the village was a lot bigger before Kohaku was born, but a lack of food one year meant a lot of people died, including Turquoise's family... :(

30. Uh, this "plants enslaving humanity" angle is new to me... XD

31. Oh, Kohaku might not know about currency yet, haha! Oooh, she found golden foxtail... or wheat! :D

32. They're going to their own food, by themselves! :)

33. Slash, slash, slash, goes Kohaku on the golden foxtail, just like she did on the green foxtail! :D

34. I love how Kohaku's hopping easily with at eight bundles of wheat, Chrome is carrying two with one arm, and Senku is using both his arms but is still struggling and walking slower than Chrome with just one bundle XD

35. I really like that they included Kohaku's special attack move question AND animated it a bit! :D

36. Kohaku seriously just loves to, like, all-out brag about Senku and/or science XD She did it in Season One with Kokuyou; in Season Two with Hyoga; and this season with Ryusui earlier AND with Nikki, Yuzuriha, Magma, Taiju, Gen, and Ginro now XD

37. Awesome detail that Yo's farm sign has writing and Magma's farm sign has a sketch of his face :D And even though they're rivals, they seem to be pals too, taking breaks in the afternoon and resting at night together like that :)

38. Yuzuriha has insight into why Taiju is the way he is; Taiju talked about his past... :) And I really like that Gen had his head bowed in honor of Taiju's words :) Also, about the petrification... uh... um... what about the- wait, actually, note to self: talk about this thing in the future when it won't be as spoilery XD

39. Taiju's farm looks so green and plentiful, and Yo and Magma's farms... have a few sprouts? XD Very cool that Taiju remembered what Senku said about seashells all the way from the first part of Season One :D

40. Senku looks proud and happy that Taiju remembered his words, and Magma and Yo look proud and happy that their farms prospered after they did what Taiju did! :)

41. And even though the latter two aren't thrilled about it, they're still in the crowd that gives Taiju the straw hat of the farming/food king! :D I like that Taiju bent his head so that Yuzuriha could put it on him, like he really was being crowned :)

42. Even Senku acknowledged Taiju as the food king! :D

43. Whoa, a couple of seasons passed and the wheat ripened, just like that! :O

44. Also not feeling this ending song, although I do appreciate that there are some English lines. Are the circle thingies related to chemistry, and elements and protons and electrons and stuff? And maybe I'll like it more if I understand the lyrics; I should look them up! :)

45. Sigh, I dislike the lack of Kohaku in the ED, but I do understand, the five wise generals and all that :D

46. Ooh, they have an brick baking oven now! :) Senku's clearly unprofessionally baked bread looks like... that... but Kohaku genuinely likes that it's like a rock and has a fun, crumbly texture :D (Or... stone? Haha! XD) And Chrome and Turquoise and the elderly man who believed in Senku in Season Two like the burnt bread as well! :)

47. Ah, so Ukyo learned that about food in the Self-Defense Force survival exercises... :O And Yo, you do NOT need to be jealous... XD

48. Senku and Ryusui are united in their resolve: They MUST revive a professional chef! :D

49. So ends the first episode about Dr. Stone's Age of Discovery! :) A triumphant arrival in Ishigami Village; reuniting with Kohaku and other old friends; making a new world map; looking for resources; the rediscovery of agriculture; the crowning of the kingdom of science's food king; a bread baking experiment that was very successful for some but not successful at all for others... and a new goal for the latest required skill set for the kingdom of science! :D

50. I'm so glad that I'm finally watching Season Three - my own goal is to finish watching all the available episodes before the second part of the season starts airing in October 2023! :)

alright, so i went through the ama with wan hazmer and daim dziauddian on twitch and picked out every little tidbit i could about the megastars bc i knew you guys would want to know. this is a long post and i’m on mobile atm so i can’t put it under a read more — sorry about that! bosses are in chronological order, starting with DJSS and ending with Eve!

DJ SUBATOMIC SUPERNOVA

- djss took the least amount of time to develop out of all the bosses (haz says his fight took about half a year.)

- daim purposely tried to make djss' name as long as he could. he was specifically looking at negasonic teenage warhead from deadpool for inspiration.

- haz and daim do have the briefing/kliffnotes for djss. they discussed sharing them at some point, but idk when that would happen.

- related to the above, daim says that dj is in his mid thirties. EDIT: his kliffnotes were shared on twitter and they say he’s 41. daim must have goofed haha

- when asked if djss actually has a face and how he eats, daim compares it to kenny from south park and how you never see his face. he thinks dj does have a face in there, but that we just never see it. as for the “how does he eat” part, daim says that sometimes they don’t have to show everything.

- daim is a djneon/neonnova shipper, and it’s one his favourite pairings alongside zuke/mayday.

- daim said that uncle ali basically instantly landed the role as djss. he was that good.

SAYU

- sayu was obviously inspired by hatsune miku and other vocaloids, but haz brings up one particular commercial involving miku and google chrome, which involves a bunch of people collborating on songs and concept art for miku, similar to how sayu started as a collab between remi and tila in-universe.

- someone asked about the models for sayu's crew's apartments. there wasn't much on that, but haz mentions that one of his favourite nsr fanfics (yes, he reads them) is "Road to Redemption," and there's a scene that takes place in a studio where the crew works on sayu, and he really likes that.

- the devs wanted sayu's name to sound both malay and japanese at the same time (as well as a nod to miku). haz says it means “warm water” in japanese.

- akusuka is a direct copy of akihabara in terms of locale.

- sayu’s shellfish commercial is a homage to a real snack in malaysia named mamee monster, which is hugely popular with kids. the format of the commercial itself was inspired by a pocky commercial that featured hatsune miku.

YINU

- her game design (for her boss fight) was partially done in ms paint by music director falk (who made the base version of her boss theme)

- yinu's mom doesn't have a name. she's just mother/mama.

- haz confirmed that yinu's father is, in fact, dead.

- daim thought yinu’s name was a nod to yuna (a popular malaysian artist). it’s not.

- natura is daim’s favourite district. he likes how calm it is compared to the others.

- daim said that they wanted a hint of hope in all three of yinu’s backstory photographs, to show that no matter how bad your life gets, there’s always that glimmer of hope and that good things can still happen.

1010

- the members of 1010 do not have any official names.

- the assets for the autographs were made by the artists at one of the partner companies working with metronomik on nsr. haz and daim didn't really have anything to do with making them, and while daim did approve them for the final game, he was sorta skimming through a bunch of assets along with the autographs, and he didn't realize what they really were at the time until later. haz is impressed with how the fans managed to decipher them.

- 1010's fight was purposefully put between yinu's and eve's as a break from the emotional stuff.

- michael jackson was used as a reference for 1010's animations/moves.

- the Bio Tactical Shield that you get for zuke after beating 1010 is a reference to BTS.

- tangibly related, but the collectable figurines are supposed to serve more as a backstory to vinyl city as a whole, rather than 1010 or neon j. daim describes the figures as what events were going on and what people were doing before the events of nsr.

- 1010’s appearance from older trailers (where they all looked the same) were actually placeholders. 1010’s actual designs weren’t finished yet when those trailers were released.

- parts of 1010’s designs (for their bodies/outfits) were inspired by tron uprising, a project that daim worked on.

- somebody asked why 1010 and neon j have sculpted butt plates. daim and haz have no idea, but daim suggested that ellie (who designed 1010) and jan (who did their character models) put them there to up the “sexy robot” factor.

- daim’s favourite member of 1010 is purl-hew/blue, and haz’s favourite is eloni/green.

- the members of 1010 were designed based on popular tropes in boy bands. rin/white is “the main guy,” zimelu/red is the “bad boy,” purl-hew/blue is the “cool guy,” haym/yellow is the “young/innocent one,” and eloni/green is the “weird/funny one.”

- eloni/green not getting fan mail was based on how the “funny guy” of kpop bands/idol groups don’t seem to get as much attention as the rest of the group.

NEON J

- haz and daim didn't expect neon j to become so popular. haz joked about blaming it on ddaddystar, who did that doodle of djss and neon j from the credits.

- when asked about neon j’s age, daim said he’s definitely older than djss, and that he could be in his forties.

- related to the age thing, someone in chat said he should be older if he went to war in the sixties. haz replied by saying they never mentioned what year the game takes place in, so it doesn’t necessarily take place in the present/2020.

- a lot of people asked about the border wars, and daim and haz said they like leaving the bulk of it up to fan interpretation.

- daim said that neon j’s organs were preserved in a robotic shell after the war, and that’s why he’s considered a cyborg.

- as stated above, daim is a djneon/neonnova shipper, and it’s one his favourite pairings alongside zuke/mayday.

- neon j’s monologue was slightly longer, but it was cut down because zul (neon j’s va) didn’t do very many takes for the monologue, and the takes he did do didn’t have the comedic punch that daim was looking for, so it got shortened.

- the singing parts of neon j’s lines were ad-libbed by zul in his audition, and daim liked it so much that it stayed for the final game.

- neon j’s monologue had to be altered in the japanese dub so that the jokes/comedy would make more sense.

EVE

- the color changing paintings from her boss fight were created by accident.

- eve was put as the last boss because of how emotional her relationship with zuke was and how complicated and intricate she is as a whole compared to the rest of the bosses.

- daim considers eve to be the "final boss" for zuke, while tatiana is the final boss for mayday.

- eve took the longest to develop out of all the bosses. she was orignally a lot more complicated, and daim said they had to "filter" a lot of things about her in order to tone her down and fit her into the game.

- eve was almost scrapped from the game. daim said her concept as an eccentric artist wasn't as well known as the other four bosses’ concepts, and combine that with how long it took to finalize her... yeah.

- none of the artists have set in stone heights because of how the gameplay works, but eve is the tallest one. the closest scene in the game that has them at their actual heights is the ending.

- her name was originally eva, but it was changed bc there’s already a popular artist with the same name.

- daim explains that a big part of eve’s concept and theme is her embracing herself. he uses the example of eve’s backstory where she starts out hating herself and trying to cover the pink half of her face, but then starts doing less of that overtime. he also mentions that all the body parts (hands, arms, legs, etc.) from her fight also come from her embracing her body and using it in her artwork.

- dream fever is haz’s favourite district.

- daim didn’t originally think of zuke and eve as being an actual couple until later down the line when the story heavily implied it.

- eve’s younger designs were done by lzbros, who did all the 2d animation for the game.

god, this became much longer since i now i have 5 PGR OCs, ahahaah :'DDDD

1) Are you excited about Autumn starting? Why or why not?

Yoko: Of course~! After all, who wouldn't be excited to either sleep an extra hour in or just be around the people you love, all cozy indoors~.

Higetsu: Looks like things will become noisy again, but I don't mind it. After all, it's fine to have fun every once in a while.

Artemisia: I personally do not mind it. What comes and goes, will come and go. Such is the seasons, after all.

Pollux: Halloween~! Hot cocoa with 'mallows~! Food~! Hehe, so many things to choose from, wonder what I'll prepare for Castor~. Maybe if I ask Teacher for an extra day off, she wouldn't mind.

Castor: Uncertain. Castor has no opinions regarding the changing of seasons. It is simply a natural order of the world.

2) If you are excited about Autumn, what is your favorite Autumn activity?

Yoko: Seasonal activities aren't complete without any festivals~!! You name it, I'm gonna try out everything! Halloween is definitely a part of the fun~.

Higetsu: I'm already expecting both Yoko and Kamui to drag me into any and all celebrations they can join and come across, so scratch sleeping an entire day off from my list.

Artemisia: In the past I used to bake seasonal pies to share with my friends and family whenever Autumn arrived...... haaah. It's been so long. Apologies, don't mind my answer.

Pollux: Castor and I used to roast chestnuts whenever we could, hehe~. Even to this day, I can still remember the smell of the last chestnuts we roasted as humans. Ah, of course, I'm pretty confident in my pumpkin carving skills-- you'll regret doubting my abilities, haha~!

Castor: No comment. Castor has no preferences for any activities. ... However... it might be nice to... attend an Autumnal festival along with brother, Teacher, and everyone........ no, it is nothing. Do forget about it.

3) How would you like to enjoy Autumn once the war is over?

Yoko: Of course, I'd invite everyone to a slumber party back at home. There's a lot of guest rooms that we haven't used in a long time, so everyone can either share a room or have their own~! ... Ah, but I'd probably have to ask dad, er, father about that.

Higetsu: After the war Autumn celebrations, huh.... haven't really thought about that. ... Maybe, I'll sleep an entire day away? Then plan out a relatively small get-together between Gray Raven and Strike Hawk.

Artemisia: ..... I have no plans yet. But... it would be nice to just spend the day with the kids(Pollux and Castor), taking them on an outdoor trip, or even just a peaceful stroll and shopping spree in the stores

Pollux: Mhrrmmm.... Argh, too many things to decide on~!! I'm decide then!!! But I'll definitely make sure Castor survives until then, so we can experience an Autumn where he can live a peaceful life again.

Castor: I....... Castor is.... uncertain. After the war... Castor has never thought about what to do after the war. What does Teacher and brother have to say about this? ....Is that so? Then I will follow their guidance.

4) Do you enjoy Pumpkin Spice-scented foods and/or products?

Yoko: Hehe, yeah~. Ah, I'm not a glutton though! Even I can't eat too much without hurting my stomach, uuuh.

Higetsu: Just to an alright amount. I'm not so crazy over such things that I'd eat them almost constantly you know.

Artemisia: Hm, perhaps just a little. It's fine to enjoy such delicacies every once in a while.

Pollux: ALL OF IT~!! Ahaha, sorry sorry~. But the more the merrier, right, right? Plus, that means there's all the more I can pretend I can't to eat anymore so I can give to both Castor and Teacher~.

Castor: No comment. It is simply a matter of which is the most appealing to my taste and smell regulations, that is all.

5) Are you going to decorate your dorm for Autumn or Halloween?

Yoko: Naturally~! Gray Raven will celebrate Autumn, and I'm already planning out our Halloween decor layouts with Lucia, Liv, and Lee.

Higetsu: Kamui already begged me and Chrome earlier if Strike Hawk could also decor the base with seasonal decorations. I didn't mind it, and though Chrome needed just a bit more pleading, he was fine with it so long as everyone cleaned up the place once the season is ending.

Artemisia: I've already given Pollux and Castor permission to decorate the base as they see fit. I trust that they won't go too overboard.

Pollux: That's such an obvious question with an obvious answer~. Of course we will! Teacher's already given us the go-ahead to decorate the Aegis squad, and we already have the decor ready~. Castor and I'll begin right after this interview.

Castor: Affirmative. Brother wished to celebrate the Autumn season and Halloween, thus we are to put up decorations in our base soon.

6) Hot cocoa or pumpkin spice latte. Which one would you pick, and why?

Yoko: It's gotta be pumpkin spice latte! Hehe, the foam one reason, but the taste is the best part! I hear people say it's too sweet for them, but personally I think it's fine? Mhm, well, everyone's preferences are different after all, so I don't judge~.

Higetsu: Hot cocoa, although pumpkin spice latte is alright too. It's nothing much really, I just prefer the taste of cocoa over the latte.

Artemisia: I have no preferences for either. If anyone were to offer me one of the two, then I'd take the one they're willing to give away.

Pollux: Both! Because Castor likes both, I can just buy either of the two and we can just have one of each. Hehe, don't tell Castor this, but I can tell that he enjoys having hot cocoa with 'mallows, so I often sneakily put in at least a few of them in his drink when I can~.

Castor: .............both. I... Castor is uncertain. The flavor of the beverages simply taste exquisite. That is all. ....but hot cocoa with marshmallows dipped in... I am uncertain as to why, but my chest is heating up at the thought of it.

7) If you're a Commandant, are you throwing any Autumn or Halloween related activities for your squad?

Yoko: Naturally! Lucia, Liv, and Lee all deserve to have have fun and enjoy the season too! They keep pushing themselves to do a lot, and I wanted to give them even just a bit of fun before going back to work.

Higetsu: ....So what if I am. Everyone at Strike Hawk has been working hard, so is it such a surprising thing that I want them to also take a time-off and enjoy themselves? ... Don't you dare tell them though.

Artemisia: Certainly. Although it's been a long time since I threw any Halloween or Autumn-related parties, even a simple celebration of the seasons would suffice. ... But if those two want a grander celebration, then, I suppose I could ask "that person" for a favor or two.

8) What would be the perfect Autumn-themed date for you?

Yoko: Hmmm, there's so many choices for that~.... but spending the day inside the cozy indoors with Lee doesn't seem like a bad idea either... hehe~. But it would also be nice to go out and have a picnic with everyone, just having fun.

Higetsu: Making jack-o'-lanterns, having a horror movie marathon night, going shopping for Halloween costumes and other related stuff, making seasonal pies and donuts.... What? I'm only saying these because Kamui's a huge bubble of energy, so he most certainly would wanna do a lot of things for a "date". ...It's not that I wouldn't enjoy it either though.

Artemisia: A date? No comment. I have no time for such things. Besides... I'm not qualified for such normal and mundane peaceful activities.

Pollux: Bzzzt-!! Nobody will be taking anyone on a date here~! Ah, but an outing with Castor and Teacher word be nice though. I wanna see those two happy, since they're... bah, nevermind. You heard nothing~.

Castor: Negative. A date is an event one goes with a lover, is it not? Then Castor is unable to go to one. ....Hm? You can go on a date with either friends and/or family instead? Is that so. ... Then, perhaps going to a carnival would be nice with brother and Teacher would be nice...

9) Do you enjoy rainy weather, or does it make you gloomy?

Yoko: Well, so long as it's just a light rain or a heavy rain that doesn't last long. The best part of the rain is afterwards, provided the weather didn't disrupt the surroundings too much, aha~.

Higetsu: I don't have any particular feelings towards the rainy weather to be honest. ...Except for the fact that it makes me feel a bit drowsy, damnit.

Artemisia: The rain, huh.... the weather has given me both joyous and grieving moments. I don't hate it, but I don't like it either.

Pollux: I hate the rain. ...Shut up, I won't elaborate why. Move on to the next question before I tear your throat out.

Castor: I.... I don't have fond memories of the rain. But if a mission requires to trudge through even rain, then so be it.

10) Cuddling up next to your favorite partner, on a rainy afternoon, while watching your favorite movies. Would you enjoy this activity? Why or why not?

Yoko: Ehehe~. Is it that obvious I'd enjoy experiencing that with Lee? Honestly, anything I get to experience with Lee would become a good memory, because it means that we're still together, by each other's side then.

Higetsu: Yes. Ah, wait, no I didn't mean to answer that so quickly-- oi, what's with that smirk on your face!? Quit it, you--!! And don't you dare tell Kamui anything I've said here!!!

Artemisia: That sounds like a lovely scenario, I'm sure everyone would enjoy for that to happen. ...That is why I must work harder for that future, for everyone's sake. ...Hm? What about me then, you ask? .... It matters not. So long as I can preserve the happiness of others and their loved ones... then I can get through anything.

Pollux: Something so mundane and tranquil as that.... heh. Not everyone's deserving of that~. But, it would really be something if Castor were to ever finally experience something like that, Teacher too. 'S why I want them to find even the smallest bit of happiness in this crappy world. ....Oi, cut out that footage afterwards and don't share it, else I'll kill you. Heh, am I joking or not~ that's the question~.

Castor: Negative. This scenario requires a lover for this to occur. As Castor has none, then Castor cannot answer this question. ...Hm? Then choose someone close to you instead? A fine alternative. .... would it be alright if I answered a group? Specifically.... the Gray Ravens, Strike Hawks, brother, and Teacher....

“Why did you do it?”

“Because some people deserve so much better and some so much worse.”

Heavy footsteps could be heard coming down the stairs while Mrs Kim was doing her daily chores. She looked behind her, seeing her son was ready to go out. “You in a hurry, dear?” She asked as she saw Taehyung running from room to room.

“I’m late for music school. My teacher is going to be so mad at me.” He responded as he was pulling on his shoes, making his mother chuckle.

“Don’t forget your babysitting the daughters of the Park family.” His mother casually said as she was folding the laundry.

Taehyung’s eye sprung wide open . “Wait, what?”

His mother sighed. “I told you last week. Your father and I will be celebrating new year’s eve with them. There daughters are quite young, so she asked me if you could babysit them. Of course I said yes.”

Taehyung grabbed his jacket and scarf and was almost out the door. “Since when did we decide to make decisions without me knowing of them. Especially if they’re about my life?”

His mother could only chuckle again. “Oh, don’t be like that! It would be a good experience. And maybe this could be a good way to earn a bit of extra money.” She said as she was eyeing Taehyung from head to toe. “Don’t forget to tie your shoes, honey! I don’t want you to fall. It’s already slippery outside due to the weather.”

As his mother was telling him that, he was already one step ahead of her. “Yeah, I won’t.” With a rush he grabbed his keys and opened the front door. “Don’t have time to talk, goodbye!”

Fortunate for him, he arrived just in time to get the bus. Panting heavily due to his little marathon, Taehyung sat down on the bus and looked at his phone. 12:30. There was a small change he would still get on time. He noticed he got a text. A wave of excitement went through his body as he saw that it was from Dahee, the girl he had an eye on for a while.

[12:31] Dahee: Thought you would come earlier for once?

Taehyung smiled. He took a bit longer than usual to respond while his mind kept overthinking.

[12:32] Taehyung: Overslept again, haha. I don’t want to be scolded again.

His heart was racing as he was waiting for a respond.

[12:33] Dahee: That’s on you! Guess I won the bet. Can’t wait for my free meal!

[12:33] Dahee: I’m heading inside. I’ll be waiting and explaining to the teacher why you’re late…AGAIN!

The bet. He almost forgot about it. If he would be late again this month, he had to give her free meal of her choice. He sighed. Of course he had to be late on the last day of the month.

After music school and a good scolding of his music teacher, Taehyung was waiting for his bus to arrive. He suddenly felt his phone vibrating, making him fish it out of his backpack. It was his good friend. “Hey Jimin.”

“Hey Tae. Are you coming to the party tonight or not? I haven’t had a respond of you yet.”

Before Taehyung could say yes to his friend, he reminded himself what task he got from his mother. “I can’t, I have to babysit.”

“Babysit?!” Jimin asked surprised.

“Yeah, babysit.” Taehyung repeated “I have to babysit on the daughters of my mother’s friend.”

“How old are they?” Jimin asked.

Taehyung hummed for a bit before he could remember their age. “I think one is eight or seven, and the other one is fifteen.”

“Hmh-“ Jimin hummed “Still a bit young.”

“For fuck sa-“

“Just kidding, just kidding.” Jimin quickly added. “Well, that’s unfortunate. Everyone was excited to see you again. It’s been a while you know.”

Taehyung sighed. “I know, I know. But we’ll hang out another time, okay? I’ll text you.”

“Alright.” Jimin responded. “Now I have to disappoint Dahee since you’re not coming.” He said playfully. “How are things between the two of you anyways? I don’t see much progress.”

“Things are good.” He said nervously. “I lost a bet and now I have to buy her a meal. So it kind of will be like a date, right?”

Jimin chuckled. “It’ll be a date if you make it a date. But I guess it’s a start.” Taehyung could hear someone calling Jimin’s name on the other side of the line. “I have to go. My mom needs me. I’ll talk to you later. See ya.”

“Talk to you later.” And with that, their conversation ended. Taehyung would lie is he wasn’t a bit frustrated he couldn’t go out tonight. At least he would get some extra cash from tonight. He just hoped the kids wouldn’t give him a hard time.

The night fell and Taehyung was now standing in front of the Park’s family’s house. He let out a nervous sigh as he pressed the grey door bell. He had never babysat before. He loved children, but he only knew how to handle animals and not small children. Taehyung chuckled and shook his head. There would only be one small child, the other would be closer to his age, or so they told him.

The door finally opened, revealing miss Park in a chique navy blue dress. “Oh, Taehyung! I’m glad you’re here, come in!” Taehyung gave miss Park a sweet smile as he stepped into the Park‘s home. It wasn’t anything too fancy, but it still was a cosy house to live in. “The girls are upstairs. Yoojin is tucking in Yoora since it’s bed time for her. Yoojin is allowed to stay up late to see the fireworks, but don’t let her eat anything! She tends to eat a lot of junk food at night.” Mrs Park said. “Honey, are you ready?!” She yelled.

“I’m ready, honey!” Mr Park said running down the stairs. He saw Taehyung and gave him a friendly smile. “You must be Taehyung, nice to meet you!”

Mrs Park grabbed her husband’s arm and checked the time on her phone. “Call us when something’s wrong, okay? And thank you for taking care of my children. It really is a relief to have someone we trust babysitting our girls.”

“Don’t mention it.” Taehyung smiled. “Have fun tonight Mr and Mrs Park!”

As Taehyung was finally left alone, he sighed and walked towards the living room. He looked around a bit, seeing everything was pretty neat. He sat down onto the sofa and grabbed the tv remote before he heard little footsteps coming down from the stairs. He looked at the entrance of the living room, seeing a small figure looking weirdly at him. “I don’t know you!” She mumbled.

Taehyung smiled at how cute the little girl was. “I’m Taehyung, your babysitter.”

She crossed her arms and walked closer to him. “I don’t need a babysitter, I’m a big girl!”

Taehyung chuckled. “Of course you are.”

The little girl blushed and giggled. She crawled onto the sofa and placed herself next to him. “How old are you?”

“Seventeen.” Taehyung answered.

The girl pouted. “You’re a bit old, but that’s okay! I’m turning eight in January!” She beamed.

“YOORA!” Someone yelled from upstairs.

Taehyung laughed “So you must be Yoora.” He said as he saw the little girl trying to hide behind his body.

Another girl came downstairs with an expression filled with annoyance. She looked a lot older than Yoora. The other girl got a bit startled with the random guy in her living room. “You must be the babysitter.”

Taehyung hummed a yes and nodded. “And you must be Yoojin. I’m Taehyung.”

“Go away!” Yoora nagged to her older sister.

Yoojin crossed her arms and heavily sighed. “Yoora, it’s past bed time! Mom will be pissed when she hears that I let you stay up late again!”

“I don’t want to!” Yoora yelled as she hugged Taehyung. “Save me from her! She’s mean!”

“Hey, I don’t make the rules! Besides, I don’t want you crying as soon as you hear the fireworks. Can’t you just make this easy and come with me?” Yoojin begged. Yoora furiously shook her head and clung further onto Taehyung.

A frustrated sigh came out of Yoojin’s mouth as she was walking towards the kitchen.

“Uhm-“ Taehyung began a bit awkward. “Your mother told me you can’t have any food.”

Yoojin stared with wide eyes at Taehyung as she slowly placed an ice cream bar into her mouth. She grabbed another one and pointed it had Taehyung, gesturing if he wanted one too. And before they knew it, the both of them where eating ice cream as they were looking for something to watch.

Yoora looked troublesome at Taehyung and Yoojin “Why can’t I have ice cream?” she whined.

“Because all of your teeth will fall out if you do.” Yoojin said to scare her sister.

A pout formed on Yoora’s face. “Your teeth will fall out too then!”

Yoojin chuckled. “Of course not. I have my full grown teeth, unlike you. You still have your baby teeth.” Yoora looked scared and quickly shut her mouth.

Taehyung laughed. “Aren’t her teeth supposed to fall out to make room for the new ones?” He whispered to Yoojin.

“Shh.” Yoojin added quickly. “These were the only two ice cream bars left.” She looked over at Taehyung and her sister and chuckled, shaking her head in the process. “She likes you.”

Taehyung turned his head and chuckled too. “Really?”

A smirk appeared on her face as she nodded. “Yeah, or else she wouldn’t be clinging onto you like that.”

“Unlike you, Taehyungie is cute and nice.” Yoora said as if she flipped her hair afterwards.

“Woah, you already have nickname for him, little lady? You don’t even have one for me.” She responded with a pout.

“That’s because you’re a weirdo.” Yoora said before she stuck out her tongue. Yoojin did the same at her, making Taehyung laugh.

Yoojin looked back at the screen as she leaned her head in the palm of her hand. “He’s too old for you though.” She mumbled.

“HEY!” Yoora exclaimed. “He’s seventeen, that just has one extra one, so that means we’re one year apart.” She said, feeling smart.

“Uhu.” Yoojin hummed.

Taehyung looked over at Yoojin, seeing she was still struggling with finding a good channel for the three of them. There was nothing special on in particular. Yoojin decided to keep the channel on a regular drama in the hope there would happen something cringy to laugh about. “Is this good for you?” She asked in a monotone. Taehyung nodded, while Yoora couldn’t care less besides clinging onto Taehyung.

After a good 10 minutes of silently watching tv, and finishing their ice cream, Taehyung decided to get to know who he was babysitting. “So, what school do you go to?” He asked Yoojin.

Yoojin softly smiled. “This may come as a surprise to you, but the same school you go to.” Taehyung was indeed a bit surprised by her answer. He had never seen Yoojin on school grounds before. “I know.” She said as if she could read Taehyung’s mind. “I get lessons on the other campus, but Yoora’s elementary school is next to your campus. I usually need to pick her up from school, so that’s why I recognize you.”

Taehyung understood now. It’s a small world after all.

The scene on tv transitioned to a romantic one, which resulted in two people kissing each other, making Yoora looking all wide eyed at the tv screen. “Taehyungie?” She sang “Do you have someone to kiss with?”

Taehyung looked at the screen and then back at Yoora. “You mean a girlfriend?” He asked, making her nod in respond. “No, I don’t have one.”

“Do you have a boyfriend then?” Yoojin asked out of curiosity.

Yoora frowned her eyebrows. “Silly Yoojin, boys can’t fall in love with boys!’”

Taehyung looked confused at Yoojin, while she just laughed at Taehyung’s expression and came a bit closer. “She’s too young to know that gay people exist.” She whispered . “But do you have one?” She asked in her regular tone.

“I’m pretty sure I’m not into guys. So no, I don’t have one.” He answered. “And you? Do you have someone to kiss with?” He asked with a playful smirk.

Yoojin chuckled. “No, and I don’t want one either, boy or girl.”

“Why not?” He asked confused.

She sighed. “Love is overrated in my humble opinion. I don’t believe people are committed enough to love someone for their entire life.” She said in full honesty.

“You’re still quite young. I bet you’ll change your mind within a few years when you finally meet that special someone. “ Taehyung teased.

She smirked. “Well, that’s a bet I confidently dare to take.” Yoojin looked back at her baby sister, making her eyes sprung open. “Oh, she’s asleep" Yoojin said surprised.

Taehyung looked at his side, seeing that Yoojin was right. The little girl had fallen asleep. “Woah, that was fast.”

“This is great. She’s scared of fireworks, so she won’t be crying now.” Yoojin explained. “Could you carry her upstairs for me? She’s a bit heavy for my weak arms.” She asked politely.

Taehyung nodded. “Sure.” He gently grabbed Yoora as he was trying his best not to wake her. While holding her, Yoojin lead the way to Yoora’s room. She opened the door as quiet as possible while she let Taehyung in. He slowly placed Yoora on her bed and tucked her in tightly with her blanket. He looked at Yoojin who gave him a warm smile. “Thank you.” She whispered.

The two of them left the room and went back downstairs. A picture on the wall caught Taehyung’s interest, and before he went back to sit down like Yoojin, he inspected the framed picture closer. He saw a girl dressed in old fashioned clothes, noticing it was Yoojin. “Is this you?” He asked just to be sure.

With rosy cheeks she looked at Taehyung. “Y-yeah.” She timidly admitted. She wasn’t really embarrassed about her hobby, but she was scared he would judge her. “That’s a picture of my first lead in a musical. My theatre school usually does plays, but this time we did a musical.”

Taehyungs mouth opened a bit out of amazement. “I didn’t expect you to do theatre.”

His comment made her laugh. “well, I’m full of surprises.” She said cheeky. “What do you do in your free time then?”

“Well-“ Taehyung sighed as he sat down next to Yoojin. “I play the saxophone.”

“Really?” She said with a raised eyebrow. “Then you should play for me once. I’d love to hear it.”

“Wait, really?” Taehyung asked to be sure.

“Yeah.” She smiled as she leaned back. “Next time you’ll babysit seems like a good time.” She smirked. As she looked at the tv, she noticed it was still the boring drama from before. “Let’s do something more exciting. I’m sick of watching this cliché crap.”

Taehyung chuckled. “What could be more exciting than this amazing drama?” He said with a sarcastic tone.

Yoojin smirked as she grabbed a pack of cards out of one of the drawers. “Uno, of course.” She said as she placed herself onto the ground. Taehyung got off the couch and also sat down onto the ground.

As if he was following her hand movements while she was handing out the cards, a thought popped in his mind. “You’re fifteen right?”

It took a few seconds for her to respond, since her focus was more on fairly distributing the cards than Taehyung’s question. “Yeah, why do you ask?”

Yoojin placed the big stack of cards in the middle as Taehyung was ready to ask his second question. “I just find it a bit odd that I’m babysitting a 15 year old. Don’t get me wrong, but you seem mature enough to care for you and your sister.”

Yoojin couldn’t help but give a shy smile by his unintentional compliment. “Well, I may or may not have accidentally caused a flood due to an attempted of giving Yoora a bath. Which may or may not have been the cause of me loosing the trust of my parents.” She said as she placed the first card.

Her explanation caused Taehyung to laugh. “Wait, what? How?”

Yoojin’s cheeks turned a bit red. “I don’t know how, but I managed to pull off the knob of the faucet.”

Taehyung smiled. “Accidents happen, I guess.” He said as he played another card. Yoojin smirked as she laid down a plus four card, making him smirk in response.

“Are you serious?” She whined. He also placed down a plus four card.

Time flew by and before they knew it the clock turned to midnight. “Do you hear that?” Taehyung asked. He stood up, making Yoojin do the same. As they left their fifth boardgame of the night, they noticed the sparkling lights outside. It was the new year.

They left the house and went into the backyard, trying to get a better look of the fireworks. Yoojin chuckled. “They’re pretty lame this year. Guess people are on a budget.” Taehyung laughed. It was true. “Oh well, Happy New Year.” She smiled as her eyes were fixated onto the sky.

She didn’t notice, but Taehyung smiled back. “Happy New Year.”

“I guess it’s time to post ‘new year new me’ on my Instagram.” She said sarcastically. Yoojin yawned and rubbed in her eye. “I think I should go to bed. Winning boardgames is a bit exhausting.” She said with a playful smirk.

“You’ve only won two times!” Taehyung said in defence, making her let out a laugh.

The two of them headed back inside after a few minutes of watching the fireworks. While Taehyung was heading back to the couch, Yoojin was heading upstairs. “So I guess this is goodbye?” She said.

Taehyung felt a bit sad when she said those last words. Even though he had a different idea of spending his new year’s eve, he didn’t regret it in the end. “It was fun babysitting the both of you. You two were funnier than I expected.”

Yoojin chuckled. “So your first impression of me is a boring person then?” She said with an raised eyebrow.

“Oh no, not that.” Taehyung quickly responded. “It was a little brat, that’s all.” He said jokingly, making Yoojin playfully roll her eyes.

“It was fun meeting you, Taehyung.” She smiled before heading up stairs.

Taehyung smiled back. “It was fun meeting you too, Yoojin.”

After an half hour of watching tv, he heard the door opening and happily greeted the Park family. “Hope you had a fun evening Mr and Mrs Park.”

Mrs Park smiled. “Oh, we had a wonderful night. Thank you for asking.” She said while she was taking of her sore-giving heels. “Hope the girls were nice to you?” She asked, making Taehyung hum a yes as response.

Mr Park smiled. “That’s great to hear. The eldest one can have a bit of an attitude, but that’s the age of course. And the little one thinks she’s a full grown woman who likes to talk back.” He said, making Taehyung want to laugh since he thought it was a great description of the two of them.

“Here’s the money.” Mrs Park said as she handed some cash to Taehyung. “Are you interested in babysitting again, dear? My husband and I are very busy lately and we could really use a babysitter. Especially someone we can trust, like you.”

Taehyung’s eyes widened a bit due to the sudden question. He thought for a second, remembering what his mother told him. “Of course!” He smiled. “If it helps taking some weight of your shoulders, then I’ll happily do it.”

Mrs Park smiled. “How polite of you. That’s settled then. Get home safely!” Taehyung smiled at the two parents before he finally left.

If so, where did you buy it? No. Well, Mom bought me one, but... we did NOT realize it was HUGE. We returned it, so now I don't have one. How do you get rid of your hiccups? When you sneeze, do you sneeze into your hand or the inside of your elbow? Into the crook of my elbow. What’s your ultimate favorite bagel? I really just enjoy a plain 'ole bagel with cream cheese. When you have chocolate, do you eat it room temperature? Or are you like me and stick the bar into the fridge first? I like it at room temperature. Are there any constellations you recognize just by looking at them? Well, I know either the Little or Big Dipper when I see 'em, but idk which is which. I just know one's upside-down. Which insect do you find the most beautiful? Butterflies. Moths can be gorgeous, too. What was the last thing you got very excited about? Someone is FINALLY adopting the dog this weekend. Mom and I have lost every ounce of patience with her. The family that wants her though came to visit, and they all adore her. Which Disney villain is your favorite? Probably Scar. I think he was pretty sly, plus he had a bangin' song, lol. Have you ever had a bedroom with a specific theme? Not really. Just filled with stuff I like. If you had to design a room with a theme, what theme would you choose? I would love to make a like, woodsy sort of room, if that makes any sense. Maybe like pine green walls with wooden accents and realistic decor. It'd be SUPER cool if I could build like one of those catwalk things along the walls that look like branches for my cat to maneuver along. Have you ever given money to a homeless person? No, I'm too distrustful. Have you ever designed your own Facebook timeline cover? Yeah. What is one site that closed down that you wish would come back? I used to really enjoy Dragons of Atlantis on Kabam! or whatever it was called. It transferred to a phone app that I have, but it's just not as fun. The dragons were super cool, and the artwork in general was just dope. If you have a partner, have you ever had to sleep in separate beds? If you don’t, how would you feel if a future partner wanted separate beds? I sometimes worry my future partner and I will have to have separate beds because of my nightmares/terrors that frequently cause me to lash out and basically attack the air. Sleeping separately would feel weird to me, but I'd far rather not hurt my partner. Hopefully, getting a CPAP mask really will help me. Though I don't imagine cuddling with one is comfortable. ;-; Or does having a partner even matter to you? I mean I want a partner someday, so I wouldn't say it "doesn't matter" to me, but it's not something I'm currently pitching a fit over not having one. How many languages can you count to a hundred in? Two. What is something you are skeptical about? The government lmao. What is something you find absolutely unethical? The meat industry, honestly. You look into it and it's just... disgusting, what they do to animals. I wish I could go without meat, I really do. What is something unethical you would not mind doing? Uhhhh? Is there a murder case you find absolutely fascinating? Okay so have you ever heard about or seen that video of a woman acting all strange inside an elevator at some hotel? Well, she disappeared after leaving that elevator, and some time later, residents complained about the water quality. They found her fucking body in one of the water tanks (I think that's what they're called?), and no one could explain how someone could have 1.) gotten up there and 2.) gotten the tank open to put her corpse inside. It's fuckin weird and creepy. What is an unusual item somebody you know owns? No idea. What’s the oldest TV-show you like? When was it made? Uhhh I don't know which is older, but I love I Love Lucy and The Munsters. Have you ever won a trophy for something? If so, what was it for? Yeah, sports and academic stuff. Birthdays!

I compiled what I found to be the most character-relevant and/or funny reasons for everyone's birthdays, however unless Inagaki Sensei confirms the reasoning behind them, these are all assumptions!

Senku - 1/4 - A pun on Ishigami, as 1-4 can be read as i-shi, meaning stone. If you've forgotten about this, then I recommend rereading chapter 56!

Luna - 1/30 - Anniversary of Orville Wright (of the Wright brothers)'s death. This may also be another pun, as 3-0 can be read as mi-zero, and the kanji for charm is 魅 (=mi) which could mean Luna has "zero charm". Another option is reading it as 1-3-0, i-mi-zero, or "zero meaning", which hopefully isn't a hint of how useful this birthday-meaning endeavor is…

Related, Luna didn't seem to be born under a full moon either so that's not the reason behind her birthday.

Yo - 1/31 - This is a big logic leap, however: 1 can be read as "ichi", or 位置 meaning position. Putting the 3+1 into context, we have Yo mentioning the "big 3" + himself as the Four Heavenly Kings, giving us Yo as the 4th in a position of power.

I couldn't find any way of making the date fit an exclamation like "Yo!" or "Uei!", but the "ue" (上) part of his name means "up" which fits the theme of positioning.

Chrome - 2/4 - The element chromium has the atomic number 24. I'm pretty confident this was the inspiration, however it's also a month after Senku's birthday!

Kaseki - 2/9 - Another logic jump: copper's atomic number is 29. The era after the Stone Age is the Chalcolithic, or Copper Age. Since Kaseki is the village's most skilled craftsman, it could be implying that Kaseki brought them out of the Stone Age into the next era.

Amaryllis - 2/14 - Valentine's Day. It's also chocolate day in Japan, which suits the sweet seductress that she is :)

Homura - 3/3 - Can be read as "san-san", which means brilliant or bright. As the name Homura means flame, this is fitting.

Ibara - 3/23 - I couldn't find anything of interest, even when checking the blossoming of thorny plants (Ibara means thorn after all). A little disappointing honestly :(

Yuzuriha - 3/31 - The end of the fiscal year in Japan and sometimes the last day of school. Had she been born 2 days later she'd be in a different grade to Senku and Taiju!

It's also the International Transgender Day of Visibility.

Gen - 4/1 - April Fool's Day, as well as the day Senku, Xeno, and probably several other Americans broke out of petrification after 3,700+ years. An inversion of Senku's birthday (1/4 and 4/1).

Great job to everyone who guessed the date before it was officially revealed!

Taiju - 4/2 - Likely the oldest one in Senku's school year because of Japan's birthday/grade division. 4-2 can also be read as "shi-ni" meaning "death", which could be related to everyone closest to Taiju dying at some point (both his parents are dead, Senku's died once, Taiju himself was likely dead and Yuzuriha wasn't looking too great in Corn City). If we want to push further though, "death" in Latin is "mori", and "mori" means forest in Japanese, tying in to Taiju's tree theme.

With Yuzuriha, Gen, and Taiju all having their birthdays right after one another, it seems like all of Senku's closest friends have their birthdays together.

Ginro - 4/7 - The element silver has the atomic number 47, similar to Chrome's birthday being the atomic number for chromium.

Ruri - 4/14 - Potentially another ishi/stone reference because of the 14, but it's also the Takayama/Sanno festival wishing for a good harvest. A more modern celebration is Orange Day, where romantic partners from Valentine's and White Day trade orange-colored gifts.

Ironically, orange blossoms are meant to represent prosperity and luck in marriage in flower language… Poor Ruri haha

Kokuyo - 4/19 - Another pun using numbers: 4-1-9 or "shi-i-ku", meaning breeding. Breeding Day is a day to celebrate the work of zookeepers and get people interested in zoos.

The other celebration on this day is the Furukawa festival, one of the three naked festivals. Men in loincloths (fundoshi) fight for the prime location near the central drum being paraded through town. The parade lasts the whole night.

Moz - 5/5 - Children's Day, also part of Golden Week. It's a day to celebrate children's happiness and their personalities. Before 1948, it was also used to recognize fathers, which is ironic given Moz attempted to kill his father when he was 7.

Carlos - 5/30 - Anniversary of Wilbur Wright (of the Wright brothers)'s death, matching Luna. Similarly, the numbers also spell something out: 5-3-0 is "go-mi-zero", or "zero garbage". Whether this means that Carlos is garbage and a zero, or that he's /not/ garbage, I can't tell.

This is also a proper day of celebration in Japan for cleaning up waste.

Ukyo - 6/5 - World Environment Day. (I have recommendations for when Ukyo's birthday should have been instead: 3/3 sounds like "mi-mi", meaning "ear", = his sonar skills. The other date is 9/8, read as "ku-ya", as the kanji for bow (弓) can be read as "ku" and arrow (矢) is "ya".)

Joel - 6/10 - Anniversary of Time. It commemorates the first time-keeping water clock in Japan, open to the public.

Minami - 6/21 - The day after Riichiro Inagaki's birthday, as well as the summer solstice. It's also Refrigerator Day in Japan, a day to check your fridges before the hot summer arrives. Or in Minami's case, to check on Tsukasa…

Max - 6/30 - Asteroid Day, for global awareness about the risks of asteroid impacts. 6-3 can also be read as "mu-mi", which means "tasteless" (無味). Not sure how the zero fits in though…

Luna, Max, and Carlos also all have birthdays that fall on the 30th of the month. What the significance of that is is unclear, apart from the fact that their dates can all create words.

Kirisame - 7/7 - The Tanabata festival, a celebration for two star-crossed lovers, generally celebrated by writing wishes on paper and hanging them from a bamboo tree. It's also World Chocolate Day!

Kinro - 7/9 - The element gold has the atomic number 79, similar to Chrome's and Ginro's birthdays being their atomic numbers.

Kohaku - 8/8 - A day full of puns, as 8-8 can be read as either "ha-ha" or "ba-ba", meaning father and grandmother respectively, but "ha" also means teeth and "hachi" (=another way of reading 8) means "bee"… The list goes on.

It's also World Cat Day! :3

Magma - 8/22 - The kanji for 8 looks like a volcano (八) which is probably the logic behind choosing August. 2 can also be read as "fu", and "fufu" is the equivalent of "hehe" laughter in English. In rare cases, 2 can also be read as "ha", which could be referencing Magma's "muhaha!" It's also the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief…

Nikki - 8/31 - 831 is shorthand for "I Love You", as it has 8 letters, 3 words, and 1 meaning. It's also good for hiding your embarrassment if you struggle to say (or type, or send via Morse code) the words themselves…

Stanley - 9/1 - The anniversary of the establishment of the US's Air Force Space Command, which is now part of the United States Space Force, the American military counterpart to NASA.

Suika - 9/9 - Chrysanthemum Day, an ancient festival in Japan, also known as the Festival of Happiness. It's also First Aid Day, the Katakai fireworks festival, and the day Kiku No.1 was launched by NASDA (now JAXA). The latter is interesting because it's quite round, like Suika!

Matsukaze - 9/15 - Respect For The Aged Day. Sometimes the date varies, but as Matsukaze is a man who follows the Bushido code, this seems fitting.

Xeno - 10/1 - NASA's first day of operations, as well as NASDA's day of establishment, then later JAXA's. An all-around good day for national space agencies. Also falls on International Coffee Day, I wonder if they're connected…

Byakuya - 10/8 - Byakuya's literal name. The kanji for "byaku" (百) is 100, and 8 can be read as "ya", creating 108, or 10/8.

Tsukasa - 10/10 - World Mental Health Day, as well as World Day against the Death Penalty. Ironic given the plot of Stone wars. It's also Public Bath Day and Fishing Day.

Ryusui - 11/11 - Desiring the best of everything, Ryusui's birthday is obviously #1…111. It's also Pocky Day, I wonder if he uses that fact to flirt with people/play the pocky game?

Hyoga - 11/30 - Day of Remembrance for all Victims of Chemical Warfare. (RIP Gozan, Yuki, Ren, Akashi, Kyoichiro, and Morito.) It could also be a way of "drawing" his kuda yari in action: 一一三〇

Chelsea - 12/20 - Anniversary of Sacagawea's death (maybe). She was a young girl who helped the Lewis and Clark expedition explore central America. 12°N 20°E is also a location in Chad.

Mirai - 12/31 - New Year's Eve, a day for looking towards the future. As Mirai's name means future, it's no surprise that this is her birthday!

Now for Bonus Commentary for A Threat, Sensed. For some reason I have a dim memory of like... reading this myself without commenting on it? Or skimming it? But I’m pretty sure I didn’t do that. Weird. Must have imagined doing it.

Ah, I think I saw the opening paragraph scrolling Patreon, and my mind kinda filled in the blanks, this is still looking new to me.

Okay, mostly banter and japes in the commentary here. About Dirk “throwing a huge tantrum in his philosophy cave”.

We’ve had quite a bit of speculation on whether this is “really” Andrew. To that, I think we’d say that it doesn’t “really” matter.

Really? That was speculated about? :/

Here we discover that Dirk has not, as some people have speculated, been directly intervening into the Candy timeline, or influencing it in any way. In fact, he has a very hard time seeing anything going on there at all.

Mhmm, and that was a pretty important thing to learn.

A couple of years ago I might have agreed with the take that everything happening in Candy is simply too outlandish to ever happen naturally, without direct, villainous interference, but that was before literally every fucking batshit insane thing that has happened on Real Life Earth started going down, and now I will believe literally anything.

This is a nice bit of distraction from the idea that at least the opening parts of the Candy story were written/narrated by Original, Alive Calliope over on meat side. To refresh your memory of what was pointed out to me:

ROXY: back when jade first got all effed up callie saw somethin and it made them freak out ROXY: it took me weeks to convince them that it was safe to come home ROXY: but now we got the opposite problem and they arent leavin the house at all ROXY: they stay home all day with the blinds drawn paintin some weird ass shit on the walls TEREZI: WH4T? ROXY: its not as bad as it sounds i promise ROXY: some of it is like ROXY: weird and violent?? ROXY: like lotsa nasty purple blood and um ROXY: nudity???? TEREZI: >:? Which tracks with the initial out-of-character-seemingness of almost everyone at the start of Candy, and how they kind of tried to railroad things back onto the “Happy??” track after Dirk derailed it with his weird self-accumulation suicide, along with some of the flowery-idyllic descriptions of characters seeing each other bathed in a halo of light and such.

Of course, they’re not going to out-and-out STATE that Calliope was at fault for that narration, helping the Candy story not necessarily fall out the way it did “naturally”, until we finally get a glimpse of her on the heroes’ ship in Meat probably still painting the continuing Candy events, inspiring them into the void of the singularity with her latent powers. Til then, it’s a bit of misdirection whenever the topic is to be brought up. Along with a mix of Roxy’s late-Candy point to John of more or less “why COULDN’T we have done this naturally? you don’t know”.

He might even think that he has more direct power over the narrative than Hussie does himself. Surprise, motherfucker, you are a fictional character.

I’ll quote this next part in full:

There’s been talk of whether or not this bonus was written in the two days between its release and the Yiffy reveal chapter. The answer is--no. It was written over a month ago. But I think the things it addresses were not difficult to suss out. Obviously, Dirk is highlighting the issues that the readership are having with Yiffy, in his typical Dirk fashion. Since it’s part of the central struggle of this story, and kind of the question Andrew’s tried to imply with every Homestuck work about what right we have to keep these characters trapped in a story, and if they’d be better off escaping it.

I’m really trying to avoid quoting so much of this, since the commentary is paid... but I think we can make an exception here? I’ll have only quoted about half of it; just, the really plot-important half. Plus, I left out a LOOOT of japes.

Dirk has a certain idea of how stories are supposed to go. That’s pretty much what the Epilogues is about. The audience also has a certain expectation of how a story is supposed to go. In a way, the Epilogues were also about that. They were taking a story that had reached the traditionally “acceptable” happily ever after, and saying, wait, no. What happens next? Thinking past happily ever after in any story is a terrifying prospect. Once Cinderella marries the prince, what then? Sure, she got what she wanted, but who knows that it will be everything she dreamt it would? What if she changes her mind, if not today, what about ten years from now? What if the prince dies of malaria?

And I’m...

Role Club Engineers: Worth the Wait?

Introduction (Part I): History of Engineer Boots

Engineer boots are definitely a polarizing style of footwear within the heritage/amekaji boot community. For one, they utilize an ankle strap for fastening in lieu of laces, and second, their tall stovepipe shafts don’t integrate quite well with the slim tapered esthetic of modern denim/trousers. While often associated with motorcycles and bikers, engineer boots were actually designed as protective gear for firemen working on railway engines back in the 1930s. (Hence the name “engineers.”) Their minimal design and use of buckles over laces made them ideal for this line of work. The tall shafts provided protection for the lower leg, while the slip-on design allowed for quick removal should anything dangerous (such as hot coals or embers) slip down the shaft into the boot. This style of footwear lost some popularity following the introduction of lace-up combat boots during World War II, but would later be picked up by motorcyclists who found use of their insulating and protective features. (And there is your history lesson for the day, courtesy of Wikipedia. Lol)

Introduction (Part II): How I Got into Engineer Boots

I first got into more well-made boots back in early 2019. Like most boot n3wbs, I was completely infatuated by that lace-up service boot esthetic, and insisted on wearing them with the slimmest, most tapered denim I could find. My first boot purchase was (of course) a pair of Red Wing Iron Rangers, followed by three pairs of Truman service boots in pretty quick succession. That first summer was when I discovered @brianthebootmaker on Instagram and YouTube, and instantly fell in love with his Underdog design, which I later purchased in August 2019 and received in May 2020.

At that point in time, Brian’s popular Underdog boots fit perfectly within my slim service boot style. However, Brian’s most iconic boot pattern was (and is) definitely his engineer boots. I admit I wasn’t sold on them at first, but I was intrigued. Did they fit my wardrobe at all? Nope. Would they even fit under the 6.75” leg openings of my PBJ denim? LOL nah. Nevertheless, I found myself constantly going back to Brian’s Instagram page and browsing all the photos of his engineer boots. Eventually, I grew to really love the look of engineer boots, ultimately placing a second deposit with Brian for a pair of engineers in October 2019. I had no idea how I was going to fit them into my wardrobe, but I figured I’d make it work somehow. (Luckily, since then my denim preferences have actually shifted toward more relaxed cuts, just in time for the arrival of these engineers.)

The Ordering Process

For most customers purchasing online, Brian requires you to take a set of measurements on your own feet, which he uses to build your boots remotely. However, those lucky enough to live nearby can actually visit Brian’s shop in LA to be personally measured by the boot maker himself, as well as discuss any details or questions you have regarding your specific makeup. I was one of these lucky people who could actually visit him in person, and used those measurements to order two pairs of boots from him: first a pair of Underdogs, and now some engineers. Both pairs were built on different lasts (which I will discuss more later), and both fit perfectly. (For a more detailed summary of being measured in person, check out my previous review of my Role Club Underdogs.)

My Specifications

While you can’t really go wrong with any of Brian’s engineer makeups, I personally loved the design Brian designed for himself: brown CXL horsehide hand-finished black, a full leather outsole, and full woodsman heels. They definitely have a more western, cowboy, workwear vibe compared to most other engineer boots out on the market, but in my opinion these are one of the best patterns, with some of the cleanest construction to boot.

One of the biggest reasons I keep going back to Brian is that he’s able to use the orthotics I typically slip into all my footwear and actually build them into the insoles of my boots. Not sure how difficult this actually is for a boot maker, but Brian has absolutely nailed the fit on my ugly feet both times, and it’s super convenient to not have to worry about a removable orthotics.

Price, Lead Time, & Shipping

The initial deposit to reserve a pair of Role Club boots is $200 regardless of which model you are ordering, with the remaining balance due upon completion. I visited Brian’s shop in Los Angeles on 8/21/2019 and placed my deposit on 10/15/2019, with an estimated completion date of November 2020. However, due to delays in construction (including waiting for my custom metal toe plates to come in), my boots weren’t actually completed until 3/25/2021 (nearly five months late). Inconvenient, but it’s not like I was wearing boots and going out much anyway due to COVID.

When I placed my first deposit for my Underdogs in August 2019, the estimated wait time was just 8 months (April 2020). However, when I placed my second deposit for these engineers just two months later, the wait time had jumped to 13 months (November 2020). To be honest, I’m not even sure how long Brian’s queue is now. Last I heard it was sometime in 2023 or 2024. (Freaking insane. So thankful I placed my second deposit when I did, before his waitlist exploded.)

At the time I placed my deposit, the base price for Brian’s engineer boots was $1350. After a few upgrade fees (hand-finished leather, toe plates, etc.), the final price of my specific makeup was $1500. Minus my initial $200 deposit, my final payment for these engineers was $1300 + $20 shipping. I made this payment via Venmo on 3/26/2021, my boots were shipped the following Monday 3/29/2021, and I received them via USPS on 4/2/2021.

At $1500, these are not a cheap pair of boots by any means. However, for engineer boots this price is actually not unreasonable, as there are some other brands selling engineer boots at a higher price point in stock sizes with limited to no customization (i.e., Clinch). #perspective #itsallrelative (To be completely honest, I roll my eyes when people scoff at a pair of boots in this price range, claiming they’re “too expensive” or that they can’t afford it, and turn around and buy 2-3 pairs of average Vibergs instead. Just stop. Clearly it’s not the cost, it’s your personal values and priorities. #endrant lol (Also, not knocking Clinch or Viberg or anything. Just a few examples to prove a point.))

ANYWAYS. For those hesitant to commit to such an ungodly wait time, I will point out that the cost to reserve a pair of Role Club boots is just $200, regardless of which model you are ordering. In fact, you don’t even need to finalize your order at the time of deposit. You can continue to brainstorm, change your mind, and discuss with Brian about your specifications long after the deposit is placed. (I mean, you have like 2-3 years before he even starts working on your boots anyway, so you have ample time to decide. Haha) Also, should you decide you can’t wait that long (or you suddenly become more financially responsible, lol), I hear you can also use that $200 deposit for something else more affordable, such as a resole of another pair of boots. Either way, hopefully this knowledge makes the $200 deposit a little less daunting and scary of a commitment.

Unboxing

The boots arrived in a single standard shoe box enclosed in a standard plastic shipping bag. There was zero padding included, so the box did arrive with some dents and dings. Inside the box, each boot was slipped inside an individual clear plastic sleeve. Unlike most other brands, no extra padding, tags, or shoe bags were included. Just the boots. (Though, they are some freaking amazing boots. Lol)

The 2307 Last

When trying to pick a last for these engineers, I was debating between his 1940s last and the 2307 last. Ultimately I picked the 2307, mostly because it had a lower toe bump. I do think that his 1940s last is his most popular for engineers, and the toe bump really doesn’t make too big of a difference once the unstructured toe collapses. (For a more in-depth summary of all the lasts/toe shapes Role Club toe has available, I will link you to Brian’s YouTube video.)

I had my Underdogs built on Brian’s 100 last, which typically has a significantly slimmer, almond toe shape in comparison to the 2307 last. However, due to my awkwardly wide feet and bunions, the MTM 100 last ended up not being too dissimilar from my MTM 2307 last. I definitely like the 2307 more, as the outer sweep of the toe box has a more angular, elegant curve in comparison to my 100 last, which kinda just looks like a thumb.

As you can see, my Underdogs were supposedly built on the 100 last, but ended up being way more rounded than expected (which I’m happy about).

The Leather

Brian most often sources his leather from the Horween Tannery, specifically CXL horsehide and shell cordovan. Brian used brown CXL horsehide hand-finished black for his own pair of engineer boots, which has aged incredibly. Personally, I tend to opt for vegtan leathers whenever possible, as it’s more environmentally friendly and in my opinion tends to build a nicer patina than chrome tanned or combination tanned leathers. Luckily, Brian happened to have some brown Italian horsebutt lying around his shop that he was willing to offer me. At the time, Brian didn’t remember the tannery from which he sourced the horsebutt (which, according to him, no longer exists), but he was able to send me a few photos. I immediately said yes.

I was hesitant at first to have Brian hand-paint black dye over this beautiful brown leather. However, I was pretty set on getting some classic black engineers, and I trusted that the black dye would slowly fade away in high abrasion areas, resulting in a beautiful black-brown pseudo-tea core finish. For horsebutt leather, there actually isn’t too much visible grain/marbling within the leather). It has a fairly smooth, consistent finish, which I don’t mind at all. Also, I can already see some browns peeking through, which gives me hope as to how the black dye will chip away as these boots break in.

Some of the brown undertones can already be seen beneath the black dye, which is most apparent on the vamps.

The Pattern & Stitching

I absolutely love Brian’s take on engineer boots. His pattern works perfectly with his lasts, creating a very well balanced, properly proportioned boot that looks just as good sitting on a shelf as it does on foot.

To my understanding, all of the boots in the Role Club Collection are branded with the same two markings: an embossed logo on the left boot and a sewn-on tag on the right.

The back stay is simple and clean. No extravagant stitch patterns or anything, just very clean, vertical lines. Nice, conservative, elegant. I like it.

I think of all the engineer boots I’ve seen on Instagram, the buckles Brian uses are some of my favorite. Flat, rectangular, roller buckles. Again, nothing gaudy. Some other brands choose to use more elaborate, bulbous buckles on their engineer boots, which kinda just look out of place. Maybe they’re too eye-catching, making it seem like they’re trying too hard. In contrast, Brian’s simple flat buckles are clean and minimal, allowing the pattern and construction quality of the boots speak for themselves. Less is more.

In general, I tend to like the look of 3-4 rows of stitching as opposed to just two. It just looks more substantial and sturdy. (Does it actually increase the quality or longevity of the boot? Probably not. I just like how it looks.) Also, can we take a moment to appreciate just how absolutely pristine this upper stitching is?

Perhaps my preference for 3-4 rows of stitching stems from my appreciation for higher levels of craftsmanship when it comes to boot pattern and construction. Having additional rows of stitching all perfectly spaced and parallel requires a little more attention to detail, and it looks amazing when properly executed.

2, 3, and 4 rows of stitching, all equally dense, evenly spaced, and perfectly parallel. Perfect execution. I haven’t found a single stitch out of place on the uppers of either boot.

Another little feature I opted to include on my boots were hand-crimped toe tracks running up the vamps of each boot. To be honest, I didn’t know too much about why it’s done or it’s benefits. However, here is an explanation I found on superfuture from Brian himself, posted by @beautiful_FrEaK:

The indentation you see on the boots is called a toe track. The reason a boot has a toe track is because the vamp went through the crimping process. It is used to get all the stretch out of the vamp because when a bootmaker needs to turn something that's 2D into 3D it is more work if the vamp is not crimped. Another benefit when a vamp is crimped is it keeps the vamp smooth without any wrinkles. The crimped vamp sits well on the shoe last.

There are different way to crimp a vamp. For example Buco puts their vamps into a crimp machine. It is a hot blade that folds the vamp in half and indents the leather. I wouldn't mind having a crimp machine (really expensive!) but I use crimp boards at the moment. It is the same process but more hands on. I last the vamp on a piece of board to get all the stretch out and it naturally gets the toe track.

Personally, I mostly chose to have the toe track for esthetic purposes, but understanding the reasoning behind it is pretty cool too.

The Heel

Unlike my Underdog boots, which have a low woodsman heel, I decided to go all out with the full woodsman heel on these engineers. I will admit, walking with such elevated heels will take some getting used to. It also definitely adds to the whole western cowboy boot vibe, but I dig it. Plus, the added lift makes me over 6 feet tall now. Added bonus.

The Sole

This is my first pair of boots with a full leather sole. Felt a bit risky putting it on such an expensive pair of boots, but whatever. They look great on Brian’s pair, so I wasn’t too worried. Plus, I live a pretty sedentary lifestyle in the California Bay Area. I don’t go on many nature hikes, nor does it ever snow here (or rain really, for that matter). Thus, I don’t really have a need for much grip or traction with my footwear.

The sole channel stitching is all pretty clean, minus one little wonky spot on the inside portion of the right boot (pictured above in the top left corner). Not a big deal though, as no one is ever gonna see it.

My biggest concern with full leather soles was the reduced durability/longevity from walking on concrete, specifically at the toe. To combat this, I asked Brian to add metal toe plates to my boots to prevent premature wear at the toe. Crisis averted.

Here’s a close up of one of the toe plates, cut into the leather sole as to be nice and flush. Apparently these had to be custom ordered to accommodate for the width of my foot, adding 4-5 months to my wait time. Meh. Worth the wait in my opinion, if it meant getting it done right.

The Welt Stitching

Similar to my Underdogs, the welt stitching on these engineers is all very clean and consistent. If I were to point out anything, it’d be that a little bit of black edge dye got on the white stitching in some areas, and there’s a small tuft of loose thread ends popping out on the inside of the left boot. However, if these are the biggest errors I could find on the whole boot, I think that’s pretty amazing.

If you look closely, you can see the spots where some of the black edge coat got onto the white welt stitching. Not the cleanest, but doesn’t bother me too much.

Here’s the small tuft of loose threads at the end of one of the 270 degree welt stitches. Again, very minor, and won’t keep me up at night.

Try On & Initial Thoughts

Being completely honest, I’m actually still blown away at how amazing these boots feel on foot. I can really tell that these boots were made to measure. I shouldn’t be surprised though, as the Underdogs Brian made for me last year fit amazingly. Although, being lace-up boots that can by cinched down with laces, they naturally are less prone to fit errors such as heel slip. Engineers, by comparison, are much more difficult to fit properly, but Brian did so masterfully.

First of all, right out of the box I actually had very little trouble getting the boots on and off. I feel like this is often the biggest struggle in breaking in a new pair of engineer boots, but not this time. Sliding my foot down the shaft felt appropriately snug, until my heel snapped past the “pass line” and sucked down into the heel cup. (I actually didn’t even need to unbuckle the strap to get them on, which was double surprising.)

Once fully seated, I could feel the built-in leather-lined orthotics beneath my feet, and the adjusted width of the 2307 last comfortably fit my bunions. What I’m most shocked by is how little heel slip I have in either boot. Until now, I had just assumed that heel slip was to be expected with all engineer boots, and only with break in and wear would that slip maybe go away. Apparently I was wrong, as these engineers already exhibit less heel slip than some of my other boots and derbies.

In designing these engineers, I chose to try out a couple things for the first time: first full leather soles, and first full woodsman heels. I know it’s still early, but I’m already loving the full leather soles. They seem to breathe much more than half and full rubber soles, and they flex and move much more naturally with the movements of my feet. I feel as though I can “feel the ground” better, if that makes sense. I will admit that I can definitely tell these leather soles have significantly less traction than rubber/cork half/full soles. However, I knew that from the get go, so me and my sedentary lifestyle are completely fine with it. I haven’t slipped yet, so it’s all good. Second, the full woodsman heels on these engineers are by far the tallest heels of any boot I own, yet once on foot, I can barely even tell the difference. Even with the steep drop off from the full woodsman heel to the leather sole, walking felt completely natural.

The last thing I’d like to note is how nicely the Italian horsebutt is breaking in. I know it’s still early, but so far all the leather on the vamps and shafts seem to be nice and tight with very little grain break or creasing. Loose grain and unsightly creasing are definitely some of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to boots, so props to Brian on absolutely killing it on the clicking. (At least so far.) I can’t wait to see how this leather continues to break in, and for the black hand-paint to chip away to reveal that beautiful brown horsebutt underneath.

If I had to pick out one spot that may require a little extra break-in, it would be the top rim around the shafts of the boot. They bounce around while I walk, knocking and banging into my shins. I expect this is probably true for most engineer boots, but hopefully this break-in period doesn’t take too long, cuz it doesn’t feel great. Until then, maybe I’ll just have to rock some longer tube socks as shin padding.

(Note: I do my best to remain impartial and objective in all of my reviews. That being said, it was difficult not to sound like some fanboy trying to sell you on a pair of Role Clubs, but this really my honest opinion. I really just love these boots. Lol)

Conclusion

If you couldn’t tell already, I’m absolutely through the roof with regards to these new engineers. The construction quality and level of finishing are pristine, and the comfort and fit out of the box is surprisingly on point. In my opinion, I think Brian and Clinch design two of the most beautiful engineer boots (on Instagram, at least), yet at the same time they exhibit two totally different vibes. Brian’s engineers draw from more rugged, western, cowboy influences, while Clinch engineers are a bit more refined, fitting very nicely within the whole Japanese workwear esthetic. Both styles are very cool, with some of the highest quality construction available.

While I’ve barely owned these for a week, and already I can confidently say that these are one of my favorite pairs in my collection. With such a beautiful pattern and solid construction, I could pick them up and stare at them all day. Also, not gonna lie, the fact that Role Clubs are so difficult to come by these days does make me feel even cooler for owning a pair. Haha

1. have you ever gotten soap in your mouth for cursing? do you think that’s right to do to kids who curse?: Nope. I didn’t say any curse words as a kid for one, but also I’m pretty sure my parents wouldn’t have done that if I did. They would have just talked to me about it and tell me not to say them. I personally don’t like the soap punishment, I think it’s dumb. I’ve heard of some parents who use hot sauce instead, which is just horrible. I understand if you don’t want your kid to curse, but you don’t have to torture them. Just talk with them and explain why it’s not nice to say and that kids shouldn’t speak that way or whatever. Don’t make too big a deal about it. Try not to curse around them either, that’s where they likely hear it and you can be an example for them. If talking doesn’t work then take something away like a toy or some computer time or whatever. I think it’s also important to reward kids when they’re behaving, even just acknowledging it. That can go a long way.

2. what age do you think is appropriate for kids to start watching horror movies with lots of gore?: Well, I personally don’t think kids should watch that at all. I’d say wait until they’re in high school.

3. do you know what the word “polyamorous” means? and did you ever hear that song by breaking benjamin?: Yes I know what it means, no I haven’t heard that particular song by them.

4. how many bug bites do you currently have?: Zero.

5. what’s one word you always have trouble spelling and can’t remember the correct spelling of?: Whenever a question like this comes up, “onomatopoeia” always comes to mind. That’s a word I never use except for these questions haha, but yeah I can never seem to remember the spelling, I have to Google it each time.

6. what’s one band that really sucks live?: I’ve never seen a bad live performance, but I’ve heard things about some bands that I haven’t seen, such as Maroon 5. I’ve heard they’re pretty bad. :X

13. which do you prefer on yourself, long or short hair?: Long, which is what I have, but it takes more energy and maintenance than I can give right now and I should just cut it short again. :/ I just can’t bring myself to do it for some reason, though.

15. with eyebrow piercings, do you prefer the ring or the curved barbell?: I don’t care for eyebrow piercings, personally.

16. have you ever pierced something yourself? why and what was it?: Nooooo. I would never. I’m terrified of needles and don’t do well at all when getting blood work done, and that’s by professionals. I could never attempt to pierce myself with no experience at all. I’d also be scared of doing something wrong or causing an infection.

17. would you date someone who was five years older than you?: Maybe. I think that’s the oldest I would go.

I wouldn’t want to live in some huge house by myself. That would make me a lot more anxious and uncomfortable. I don’t even want a big house like that for my family and I, it’s just so unnecessary. We’d only need a house big enough for 4 adults and a doggo to live in.

35. if you came across child porn on your computer, what would you do?: Omg, that would mean I was hacked somehow. I’d be disgusted and horrified and try to get rid of it as quickly as possible. Are you supposed to report that kind of thing? I would think so, so that it could be taken down and hopefully catch whoever distributed it.

36. what’s the last computer game you played?: The Sims 4. It’s been a couple years, though. I get urges to play, but I’m too lazy.

40. how often do you use “<3” or “:]”?: I don’t use :], I use :) Anyway, I don’t use emojis or smiley faces super often, but sometimes when I feel they’re fitting. I know some people who get a little carried with them.

43. what’s one thing your grandmother does that you can’t stand?: She doesn’t do anything that I can’t stand. My grandmothers were/are (my maternal grandmother sadly passed away 15 years ago) sweet, loving, and adorable. haha.

44. did you ever notice how it’s more tragic if a younger person dies than an older person, even if they both died of the same cause?: Loss of my grandparents was heartbreaking for me, I had a really hard time with their loss. Them being older didn’t make it any easier. I think why people find it even more devastating when a child dies is because they were so young and hadn’t even had a chance, yet, like their life had just begun. There was so much still to experience. They should have had a lot more time. Even a young adult because it’s like their life is also kind of just beginning in a way, perhaps they just started or finished college, were about to start a new job, or were about to get married and start a family. They, too, have so much still to experience and should have had more time. But still, losing someone who is older is still just as sad. I think some people just can sometimes find a little comfort in the fact that they had lived a long life and got to experience a lot.

45. when’s the last time you snuck around, and where did you go?: I don’t have to sneak around. Never have.

46. how often do you wash your hair?: Every couple days.

47. do you think the price for a movie ticket is too high these days?: Well, these days movie theaters aren’t even open. However, I don’t think it’s the movie ticket price that’s too high, it’s getting stuff at the concession stand that racks it up. The food and drinks are ridiculously overpriced. I just have to get some popcorn, though. I miss movie theater popcorn with salt and lots of butter. 48. have you ever been to a drive-in movie theater?: Yeah, a few times as a kid. Actually, the last time I went was to see the Willy Wonka movie with Johnny Depp when it came out. I wish they still had drive in theaters where I live. I think they should make a big comeback, I mean that’s perfect for social distancing. We can stay in our own cars, closed off from others, but still enjoy movies on the big screen.

49. what’s your favorite musical?: Sweeney Todd (the one with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter).

50. what do you think of dr. seuss?: I was a fan as a kid, I loved his books. They’re classics. I actually have a Star-belly Sneetch stuffed animal, which is a character from his book, The Sneetches.
