haikyuu is incredible man…
you ever think about the fact that some people exist not to become stars but to lead others towards the light? ….
hinata was so moved by the little giant that his life found meaning the moment he came into his life (and the little giant never really ended up becoming a pro volleyball player in the first place despite his drive and talent!)
nekomata sensei’s “all we have to do is to lower the net!” shaped kuroo’s entire existence. it left such an impression on him that kuroo turned it into his goal in life: helping as many people as possible discover volleyball.
kuroo himself never going pro but becoming instead a bridge between people and volleyball (which he loves so dearly he wants to make it everyone’s business).
takeda sensei’s “He Who Would Climb a Ladder Must Begin at the Bottom” (which he says to hinata during his first year) became so meaningful to him that hinata hanged it on the wall of his bedroom in Brazil.
sugawara becoming a teacher and getting emotional when facing hinata (to whom he used to set when kageyama refused to do it) and kageyama (who quite literally took what had been his place up until the moment he came) and their growth.
you might think you will never end up doing anything great. instead, i believe you might not end up doing something grand, but whatever it is that you do in life it will always be great and you simply never know whether that one thing you said once or that one thing you once did will ever become the driving force behind someone else’s dream.

~ being good means being free 🧡
the parallel between the karasuno x kamomedai match and the msby x adlers one is wonderful and super important to show hinata's development, representing the endings and beginnings described in the chapter's title.
Tumblr media
when hinata gets a fever, he can't stay on the court anymore, he can't be the happiest anymore, and is faced again with the fact that he needs to increase his limits instead of overextending himself, he needs to be good and healthy before to get stronger after.
Tumblr media
chapter 365 represents the advice hinata needs, 398 represents the learning he achieves. 365 is like the storm before the rainbow and 398 is the explosion of colors resulting from hinata's growth, the rebirth of a tiny bird that fell several times before being able to fly freely to his so deserved top of the world.
~ he is good, he is free, he is the one and only hinata shoyo ♡

do you think Koganegawa could be Captain after Futakuchi leaves?
Would they have won the tickets to nationals without Futakuchi as captain? (This might be a spoiler)
So I had to do a bit of research as to whether there were other first years on the Date Tech team (there are) and who they were.
One of them is a libro, Kousuke Sakuname, and I don't think anyone in that position is allowed to be captain. At least that's what the Kurasano second years say when they were talking about who should be their next captain after Daichi.
The only other first year I could find on the Date Tech roster is middle blocker, Jingo Fukiage. And not much of known about him.
That being said, I could see Kogane being captain. As a setter he directs the flow of the game and needs to have a certain level of game sense to analyze the opponent and leadership skills in order to bring out the best in his hitters. Those are all traits of a good captain.
His only draw backs are that he can be a bit impulsive and overly energetic maybe, but I think with another year or two worth of maturing and experience on the court he'd be able to hone his ability to plan game strategies and read the other players both on his side of the net and the other.
Now whether they would have won without Futakuchi... I just spoiled myself on that the other day when I was trying to find what Date Tech's school motto was, so no big deal, if I remember I'll tag this as having a spoiler for those who care about that.
I think with a team like Date Tech, who has pretty strong players to begin with not to mention a coach who seems to know what he's doing, having a well rounded and put together captain is only somewhat important, but not necessary. Maybe I don't fully understand what a captain does, but I feel like whatever skills the captain lacks, the coach would pick up the slack. Examples that immediately come to mind would be: encouraging the players, leading practice, giving advice on how to overcome tricky opponents.
That being said, Futakuchi is a strong player, an important link in the chain, or gear in the machine. He has an important part to play in the team's line up and I'm not sure if they have anyone in their roster who could have replaced him. So, no, I don't think they could have made it without him.

btw Tokita, Shoji, and Yaotome's first names haven't been mentioned within canon, as far as I know. I came up with my own for them with the help of Nazuke Pon. It's a really useful site for Japanese names! I've put some of the meanings of the characters below:
Tokita Shizuka (時田静火)
静: Quiet. No sound. No movement. Calm.
火: Fire. Flames.
Shoji Riku (庄子陸)
陸: Land. A land of undulating hills and mountains. A land that is not covered with water.
Yaotome Tohri (八乙女純利)
純: Pure. Unpretentious. To be in one's natural state. Raw silk.
利: Sharp. Smart. Wise. Good at work. Good. Useful. (blade) sharp. To be sharp. To say things.
Some of the Karasuno team (mostly Nishinoya, Tanaka, and Hinata) call Yaotome "Tori", the word for "bird" in Japanese. It's because Nishinoya accidentally called him that once, since "Tori" sounds similar to "Tohri". Because the nickname fits the team's image and Yaotome himself, it stuck.

oikawa is a perfectly crafted character. he’s silly and insufferable and has a ridiculous way of behaving but he’s also determined and strong and committed and hardworking. if you dive deeper, he’s also desperate, insecure, and he yearns and he wants and he fights. he’s scared his hard work will never be enough because there are people who are already one step ahead of him, people he considers geniuses.
“talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish.”
i don’t think anything will ever stop him from doubting and feeling insecure, and iwaizumi himself once told him he’s probably never going to be satisfied. however, by breaking free from the constant pressure of “the talented ones”, he can polish his hard work, his instinct, his drive.
it will lead him far, yes. in fact, it leads him to another country, dealing with another language and another culture and another world. he momentarily forgets just how fun volleyball can be, until meeting hinata reminds him of it. he grows up to be fierce and motivated and passionate and on the opposite side of the court, representing another country and standing up for his “petty pride”.
he’s a character that drives me insane because i relate to him in ways that scare me. am i talented? or is what i have “just” instinct that i have to polish? am i a sort of imposter between people who are born great? people who have to work hard, just like me, but they seem to be doing it a bit more effortlessly?
hard work is always hard work, no matter the raw material (talent/instinct). but oikawa is so good and relatable because he knows it and he still feels like he needs to do more, more, more. he feels different from the others, and when first confronted with this reality it almost takes control of him. (kageyama is what he will never be, he despises him because of it).
and what’s an even bigger paradox is that nobody ever looks down on him. he does it all by himself. kageyama and ushijima and hinata and everybody else, they all look at him for what he is: a good player, a scary opponent, someone they fear and someone they look up to simultaneously, someone they have fun playing against, someone they want to beat, someone worth their time and efforts, someone who’s crazy good at what he does.
as always, haikyuu is so real for this too. our mind works in very weird ways, sometimes we don’t take into consideration others’ opinions of us unless they’re negative, we’re never satisfied with ourselves, we always want more.
oikawa is a perfectly crafted character. he has flaws and he’s so intensely human people might despise him for it. and the path furudate built for him is so fitting and so hopeful it has me believing there’s a chance i’ll get there too. not to Argentina, not to the Olympics. instead, to a future where my hard work means something (to me!).
and what if i don’t feel like the others? what about it? it will never be “just” instinct. it’s my hard work, my pride and drive. it will lead me places because i demand it. when oikawa breaks off the cycle, he becomes insatiable. “i will defeat everyone, so be ready!”
(i also happen to believe he really does defeat everyone).

haikyuu is cool because you go and read things like "talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish" "because people don't have wings we look for others way to fly" "today you are the defeated. what will you become tomorrow?" "we are the protagonists of the world" "and if you get really really good, someone even better will come and find you". and you read about how like. kageyama was learning to love again after it was ripped away from him and hinata was learning that he could jump high enough to become the sun itself and oikawa and ushijima and atsumu and kuroo and everyone else were all learning and trying and living with the hopes of becoming something greater than they ever could have dreamed but that something greater wasn't about winning it all it was about how they were so intricately tied that they will forever be part of the same path no matter how many times it splits and it's THE reason they are able to keep moving forward no matter what they may face. and then you're just expected to continue your life afterwards like nothing HAPPENED.

hinata shoyo is probably my favorite basic shonen protagonist because i don’t know how much effort it would take to fly or turn super saiyan or achieve a black flash or a rasengan.
but i can imagine what it takes to leave everyone and everything you know to go from japan to brazil, learn a completely new version of volleyball, be awkward around a new roommate and learn 3 different languages (spanish, english and portuguese)
i can imagine burnout from all that plus breaking and rebuilding you muscles constantly and dealing with sand and wind and sun and rain affecting your plays.
the man works as a delivery boy and teaches kids portuguese (not even his first language) to support himself while becoming an established beach volleyball player famous all around rio de janeiro.
what a legend.
