sea legs | Atsumu Miya
you don’t know how to swim so Atsumu teaches you
words: 1.1k
warnings: none !
A/N: Idk but somehow I’m addicted to write haikyuu characters at the ocean or at the beach in general xd
Tumblr media
Somehow, the love of the ocean had been lost on you. It must have missed a generation. The rest of your family loved to be on the boat and surf and swim, but you just didn't. Growing up, you had just never been interested, instead choosing to sit in the sand, and now you were so intimidated by the water that the thought of going in made your heart race.
You had managed to keep it from your friends thus far, telling them that you were cold or wanted to finish your book or that you'd forgotten to wear your bathing suit. And it usually worked. For whatever reason, they just never seemed to question it.
Until Atsumu tried to take matters into his own hands.
You guys had been out on the boat for most of the day, everyone drinking beers and swimming and sunbathing on the deck.
"C'mon, (Y/N)!" Atsumu called out, his hair dripping water as he pulled himself onto the boat. You never come swimming with me." He pouted, sitting down next to you and pulling you up to be eye level with him. He wrapped an arm around your waist and nestled his face into your neck, planting kisses on your warm skin.
"Not right now, Tsumu," you say, running your fingers through his wet hair, "I'm trying to read my book."
He pulls away to look at you, a smile on his face that only makes you nervous. In one swift move, he taking your book out of your hands and throws it across the deck. He's on his feet in an instant, grabbing you by the waist and hoisting you over his shoulder. He walks to the side of the boat, and you're pounding on the back of his chest, begging him to stop. He just laughs, blissfully unaware of the fact that not only do you hate the water, but you can't swim.
"Astumu, seriously," you plead, "please put me down." Your palms are sweaty and your hands are shaking, and you're trying your hardest to stop yourself from crying. He starts to throw you over the edge, so as a final hail mary, you yell, "Atsumu I can't swim!"
Everyone freezes. The laughing and talking stops and all attention goes to you. Atsumu takes you off his shoulder and places you in front of him. You wrap your arms around his neck, pulling yourself into him, needing to calm your breathing before you can even try to explain. He holds onto you immediately, rubbing circles into your back. You're sure he's confused, but you're also sure he can feel your heart beating out of your chest.
You finally pull away, stepping back and taking a seat on the deck. He sits down next to you, squeezing your knee. "I just," you start to explain, sighing, "I never had much interest in the water when I was little You look up at all your friends, listening intently. "And now I just feel so far removed from the ocean that I'm terrified to even try to go in."
"Why didn't you tell us?” Suna says finally. “Yeah, anyone of us could have helped you get more comfortable," Osamu adds.
"Nevermind the fact that if you ever fell in we'd have no idea you couldn't swim," Atsumu finally speaks up. You look over at him, the look on his face is soft and comforting. He reaches over and brushes some hair out of your face.
"I know," you say, shaking your head. "I should have told you, I'm sorry."
The group falls silent. Atsumu's hand goes back to your thigh, giving your leg a comforting squeeze. "Well," he says, "do you wanna learn now?"
"Oh, I don't," your heart starts to race again, "I don't know."
"Hey," Atsumu says, putting his fingers under your chin, making you look at him, "I'm not gonna let anything happen to you, okay? I won't even let go of you if you don't want me to."
You take a deep breath. You want to scream out no, absolutely not. But you know you need to do this. He's right if you had fallen in you'd be completely done for. So, before your fear can take over and answer for you, you just say, "Okay. I'll do it." You look at Atsumu, pointing a finger at him. "But if you let go I will kill you."
Everyone laughs, and you try to laugh along with them to calm your nerves. It helps a little, and Atsumu placing a kiss on your forehead definitely doesn't hurt. Atsumu jumps into the water, leaving you sitting on the edge of the boat, your toes dipping into the marsh.
"Don't be nervous," Aran says, which produces a chorus of encouragement from the rest of your friends as they sit next to you.
Atsumu swims over to tread water right in front of you. He reaches up and grabs onto your ankles. "You ready?" he asks.
"No," you smile, "but let's get it over with anyway."
He helps you slide into the water, grabbing into your waist as soon as he can. You're wildly nervous, but Atsumu's arms wrapped tightly around you make you feel infinitely better. He spends the next 15 minutes teaching you how to tread water, showing you how to properly move your arms and legs to stay afloat. You can tell it's a little hard for him to hold you up and also teach you, but he does it anyway, not complaining once.
“Okay, let me try on my own," you say, much to his, and your, surprise.
His eyes search your face. "Are you sure?" he asks.
"Yeah," you say, "I'm never gonna really learn if I don't try on my own." In truth, you're terrified, but you put on a brave face for your own sake.
"Alright," he sounds weary. But he says anyway, "You can do this, okay? Don't be scared. I'm right here if anything goes wrong." You nod, and he lets go, keeping his hands close to your waist. Your head nearly dips under the water, but you kick your legs harder and manage to keep yourself afloat. Atsumu smiles and the others let out a few cheers.
It doesn't last long, though, and you feel yourself losing some energy, slowly slipping further and further into the water. Atsumu's hands are on you in an instant, pulling you back up to the surface. He helps you get over to the boat, and Osamu and Aran reach their hands down to pull you back up to the deck.
Atsumu's arms are around you before you even see him get back onto the boat. "I'm so proud of you," he says, peppering your face with kisses.
It's pretty safe to say you still can't swim, but at least you're no longer petrified of the water.

— currently a teenage girl lied in bed, tears streaming down her now wet cheeks, her mascara smeared, and her will to live? gone! haven't seen that bitch since sixth grade!!
she chuckled a bit at her own joke, trying to muffle it with her pillow she hugged oh so dearly.
why were you crying? oh that was because of a minor inconvenience, that had caused you to have a complete breakdown!
it just so happened to be because you were out of ice-cream, the last straw in your already horrible day. you inhaled sharply, still trying to calm yourself down so you could sleep, nevertheless the tears still ran heavily down.
she took her phone and opened instagram, hoping that badly edited facebook memes would save her, just like they always did.
— meanwhile as you cried kenma sat in his treehouse, the cold winter air stinging his skin, he shivered. his mother had yet again had an argument with his father. the two would constantly fight, and today was no exception.
he took out his pvp and inserted animal crossing—gaming seemed to ease his stress— while he played, a specific song blasted through his phone,
"do not enter is written on the door way...why can't everyone just go away," he hummed along with the tune "except you. you can stay."
a song that fitted perfectly in his lonesome treehouse, yet he had not found anyone to invite. he wanted to find the right person, someone like him who would appreciate him and his treehouse that seemed to shine in the late night.

CHERRY RED  ➽ ASAHI AZUMANE X OC

Chapter 1: As The Sunlight Kisses Her Skin
The summer's heat burned brilliantly on the day he met her, captured her radiance and lit her up so that she shined in his eyes.
Azumane Asahi's face burned both from the heat of the sun and his own nervousness as he met eyes with the little girl across the street, hesitant as he watched her stare right back at him with curious red eyes. Of yellow-brown skin that drank in the sun's rays and black curls that framed a round face, she tilted her head with something of an inquiry, a question to the brown haired boy who stood watching her family move into their new home. Her blue sundress was vibrant against the grey of her house as it blew gently with the passing wind, and Asahi found that his very breath seemed to lock in his throat, cut off lest it should find itself swept up with the summer breeze.
Hesitantly, the girl waved her hand, barely lifted it from her side in the motion as she searched him for a reply. When he gave her one with equal shyness, a gentle smile grew over her lips, one that glowed so shiningly in the way that it lit up her features and painted her like the image of utter beauty. What breath remained behind Asahi's lips fell from him at the sight, he could no longer fight against the effects of his heart racing and blood pumping so loudly in his ears, sounding like the drums of a summer festival. This girl, so unlike anyone he'd ever seen in his life up until that point, was the absolute manifestation of summer's sweetness, the flavour of watermelons on a hot day that coursed through his chest and lit fireworks under his skin.
Ah, the thought came to him unbidden, an unwelcome intrusion that tilted his world on its side, I think this might be a crush.
"Do you want to come over?"
Seconds passed him by like years before he realized that she'd spoken to him, and the red that dusted his cheeks became one of embarrassment as he lightly jogged across the narrow street at her invitation. Coming to stand before the girl, he noted immediately that they were nearly on the same height, with her only a short way beneath him where he could meet her eyes. The red colour he found in her was sharp, filled up with something like excitement and quiet fires that made Asahi himself feel giddy. "Hi," the word fell out from his lips in a nervous mutter, one that caused him to mentally punch the air and wish that he could take it back. Despite his rapidly spreading heart-attack, he pushed forward, "Are you moving in?"
There came a nod from the girl as her eyes lazily drifted over to one of two moving trucks, the back of which was filled up with furniture and appliances; he was able to spot a particularly large something in the back of one, wrapped up in dark blue blankets and tape that was turned over on its side, the working men grunting with the effort of lifting it so that they could place it down on a little wheeled device and roll it through their front gates. "My father's job gave him a new... a new..." her eyebrows furrowed, her lips pushing out into a thoughtful pout and her gaze fell forward as she seemed to struggle with finding the right thing to say. Patiently, Asahi waited for her, and noted to himself that she had a slight accent that popped up around certain words. She must've lived outside Japan before moving, he figured as he observed her features a bit longer, taking note that, despite her darker skin tone, she still possessed features that were very much East Asian. Maybe one of her parents was Japanese?
Soon, sudden in the motion that it startled Asahi from his thoughts, the girl snapped her fingers and pointed upwards at something, her lips forming an 'o' shape as she made a sound to accompany. "Chance! They gave him a new chance to work here, so we moved."
Asahi's brows furrowed as he repeated the word, derived from regular English and adapted to daily Japanese language. Her context, he found, sounded unnatural, the word 'chance' fitting in awkwardly with the rest of her sentence and made him try and think of a better one to replace it. It finally came to him in a moment of sudden thought, similar to the one that had come over the girl only moments before, and he wound up pointing one finger upwards in the same way he'd seen her do. "Like a new position?"
"Ah!" Her smile turned into something bashful as red adorably scattered across her nose, "That's the word I was looking for!" Something of an embarrassed sigh fell on her lips, "My bad, my Japanese still isn't at a hundred percent — I only ever practiced with my father so I can only say a few things."
"Oh! Well—" Understanding passed through his features as he nodded once, "I could help you if you ever need it?" He offered up almost thoughtlessly, barely even registering his words as they slipped out of his lips and caused him to immediately fumble once they were out. His face burned bright red and his hands lifted to wave around in nervous gestures, as he tried to retract his words, "I-I mean, only if you need the help! I assume you'll be practicing with your father so you might not even need anything from me, but—"
A beautiful sound cut off his rambling, harmonious and warm as it rang in his ears and in his flustered state, he realized that the girl was laughing. Her expression was warm and open beneath the summer's sun, drawing Asahi in under the season's spell and, wow, he couldn't help but stare after her as she sounded out with such joyous notes. His heart fluttered again inside his chest and lit his face aflame with admiration that only intensified when her red eyes met his once more and he saw a world of song and a galaxy of sweet lullabies.
"You're really kind," the words hit him harder than they should have as they caused Asahi's head to swell, her expression turned gentle and gratifying with her smile and he couldn't help himself but to return the expression. "I'd love to learn and practice with you."
Under the heat of the summer sun, Azumane Asahi's heart raced for the very first time.
════════════════
The sound coming from the music room was familiar to him, his feet almost instinctively guiding him until he stood directly in front of the door that did very little to withhold the sounds of a piano reaching down its hallway. He could perfectly hear each note that was played, could nearly picture her with her back straight and eyes closed, a gentle smile on her lips as she let herself go in her music. The image of her caused his beating heart to calm with a serenity he would so effortlessly associated with her, and his usually racing mind become eased into tranquility as he took a deep breath and finally reached one hand out to pull the sliding door; she was there, constant and permanent, the one factor in his day-to-day life that he could depend on never changing.
Her fingers didn't give pause from their motions across black and white keys, though he could tell from the slight tilt of her head that she'd heard him enter through the door. An answering smile took place on her lips, familiar in the way that he'd seen it every day since they met that summer; made his breath falter with unfailing consistency every time she gave it to him. Without making any vocal indication of his arrival, he made his way over to lean against the far wall, his gaze becoming locked through the window from where he was able to spot the football and baseball fields. The cherry blossoms, picturesque in the way they fluttered on the wind, felt as if they were somehow lending their scenery to the girl's music as her sounds danced across the room and straight to his heart, pulling at the strings there until he was wrapped up in her song; he kept his attention outside the window so that he wouldn't lose himself watching her, as he always seemed to let happen more often than he liked to admit. Sometimes he would wonder in his moments of idleness, in afternoons spent in his living room with so little between them as a show or anime played on his screen, if she would ever catch his lingering gaze, if she could identify every flicker of emotion that followed so faithfully on her every breath. Did she know the effect she had over him, that she could send him out to the very ends of the universe and bring her a galaxy if only she willed it?
Ah, the thought alone terrified him, drove a cold fear through his heart at the idea that she might have been aware. That his constant, the sun that he could always trust to stay with him inside his galaxy, would she hide her light away from him if she found out about his feelings? Would her light be covered up by rain clouds in her departure? Would she fight against gravity until she disappeared from his solar system, leaving his planets and asteroids to collapse and suffocate under the hands of a black hole? The one factor in his life that he could trust would never leave him in the dark, he worried that any hint of his affections for her would drive her away from him, that should he ever show to her his heart in its entirety, she'll be scared off by what she found there. His sun would go cold and leave him and his planets to plunge into the throws of an icy wasteland and he would be left with nothing more than frostbite and frozen limbs, and the very notion of her ever leaving him frightened him more than anything.
And yet, as he stood basking in the music that she played and watching the petals fall, that he gave in to the overwhelming urge to look at her, to watch as she lost herself atop the ebs and flows of musical waves before they abruptly paused when her fingers left the keys. He watched her as she brought a finger up to her plush lips, the very same way he would see her do whenever she had something on her mind as she pondered over a page of lines and symbols, something that Asahi had long since given up on understanding, before she snapped her fingers and quietly exclaimed an 'ah!', picked up her pencil and scribbled away.
Just like planet Earth never dared to stray from her orbit, Asahi found himself unable to leave the force of her gravitational influence, and he'd long since resigned himself to a destiny where he could only have her from so far away.
"That doesn't sound like Chopin," he teased her lightly, smiling as he crossed the distance between him and where she sat, nudged her side so that she'd allow him space. Her answering chuckle echoed in the room now void of the music she played as she gave him her full attention. "I got a bit caught up with transcribing this song in time to upload it," she easily confessed, to which Asahi's lips set down into a helpless, something of exasperated, smile. This girl, she was always so scatter-brained, jumped from one item to the next without a second thought, going of on endless tangents until she'd lose herself in her words and forget her starting point. It was a wonder that she was able to keep her attention on the monochrome keys long enough to play them, he often times found herself baffled on how quickly she jumped from one thought to the next. And yet, all wonder and doubt would immediately disappear whenever she began to press her fingers against them.
"Don't you need to prepare for a competition next month though?"
The orange hues of the setting sun filtered in from the window and made golden skin shine as her expression became one of quiet mischief; the way her eyes narrowed as her lips pushed upwards with her smile was a telling of subtle playfulness that was one of a thousand charms on her. "I can spare myself some time to enjoy outside of the classics, can't I?" She hummed, gently shoving into his side with her shoulder. Since their childhood, Asahi had grown to tower over her even whilst seated, and it was always something that she would teasingly complain about— "We were on the same height before middle school, how did you grow so tall so fast—?"
He answered her with his smile and a bit of an exasperated sigh as he cast his eyes down to the black and white keys. Here with her, it felt almost as if he could forget the encounter he'd had that day during lunch, felt as if the boy who so passionately spoke to him as an aspiring ace was a fragment of a blurry dream and that it would vanish away from him in a gust of wind. And yet, it was as he sat next to her that his words rang out so loudly in his head as her gaze intently searched him, picked him apart by the worries and uncertainties he wore on his lips and spread them all around them like the notes on her music sheets.
"And when I jump, the whole other side of the net just kinda goes fwaaa!! And opens up!"
There was a moment that passed between them, one punctuated by fears and insecurities left to flutter around them like the falling blossoms, and without saying anything to him — as if she could feel every fluctuation of his heart as it danced around inside his chest — her hands reclaimed their positions over the piano keys, though when she began playing again, it was a tune that Asahi had heard a thousand times over, one that he'd have on loop in his mind and would lull him to sleep. 'Soffia la note' sang out in her melody, warming the music room under the orange of sunset lights and fluttering cherry blossoms; the boy-turning-man felt his heart swell with all his feelings of doubt and hesitance until they were tumbling out of his lips, flowing like a dam whose floodgates had been gently coaxed apart by her hands, came undone from a mere brush of her fingertips. The sun gently grazes his skin with her warmth and he finds himself unravelling.
"I... I miss it..."
A hum of acknowledgement flowed up from her throat, gently urging him to continue as she played the song that he'd heard her play from her piano room, situated across from his bedroom at night. "That scenery... I miss seeing the other side of that wall."
"What's stopping you from seeing it again?"
He gave in to her gravity and looked over to her, and the feeling of pure want and longing intensified inside his chest as he took in the sight of her closed eyes and sun kissed skin, a smile on her lips as her body gently swayed side to side with her administrations. Tight black curls brushed against the back of her neck in round spirals, she'd tucked away the strands that normally framed her face to rest behind her ears; the ones that he so often brushed with his fingers in mindless actions as if it had all been second nature to them, that she'd idly twist around with her fingers as she would hum a sweet melody. Ephemeral, a scenery he wished to burn inside his mind forever; the view of the other side of a thin line where she stood opposite from him, close enough for his fingers to brush her face but far enough where he could never fully hold her in his arms and call her his, just like the Earth was forced to stay so close to the sun without being able to bury herself fully in its brilliance and shine. 'What's stopping me from crossing that line?' The question burned within him, turned and festered and pushed out again in another wave of words and feelings.
"I'm afraid that I'll be shut out," he was near whispering as he spoke, entranced and tortured so sweetly by her visage that it left him in a familiar state of breathlessness. "When the other team throws a strong, tall block up in front of me, I just can't see myself punching through it anymore... All I can envision is getting shut out — or being so afraid of getting shut out that I take myself out of the game."
'I'm so afraid that you'll shut me out and leave me here by myself,' those words stayed on his tongue, locked up and choked back so that she would never have to find them. And yet, he worried that somehow, she would have been able to see right through him, just as she so easily did whenever he attempted to keep something from her, to hide his troubles from her sight even though he'd crumble under her patient caresses. No matter what he tried to hold back from her, she'd manage to sense whatever it was and gently pull him out from his fears, hold him so closely to her with unending understanding and tolerance for him that it only made his heart yearn all the more for her and cry out for something that he wouldn't dare to let himself have.
"But you love that feeling, don't you?"
He did. He absolutely loved the feeling of the ball hitting his hand, heavy in its weight and impact; of her mere presence sitting next to him like this, a constant and comfort to him when he needed her most. They were things he could very well get drunk on, waste himself away with them until kingdom's return, but whenever he reached out for their sensation, he was met with walls and red lines, barriers put up to surround him and close him in; to shut him out and keep him away from her. "I feel as if I'd only weigh the team down again if I went back..." he confessed heavily, "What kind of ace would I be if I can't even make the ball count?"
'If I chase after that feeling, I'll only push you away.'
She was silent save for her playing, letting the music surround them for a while before she opened her eyes to look up at him, and Asahi felt his heart lock up and suffocate around chains when chocolate brown met cherry red. Her smile was encouraging, filled to the very depths with understanding, serene in the way it gently touched her face. Soffia la note rang out in its light and encompassing sounds as he took her in, heard her words so clearly beneath keys and melodies so that they coursed through his entire being and drew him in.
"If you love that scenery so much, then there's nothing stopping you from chasing after it, is there?"
They were the same words that Daichi had said to him after the captain had caught the ace slinking around by the gymnasium, and yet their weight when spoken from her lips had become all the more impactful, hit him harder and twisted around in his gut in a way that mutedly screamed at his existence and lit a fire under his skin. Her gaze was almost knowing in the way it searched his very soul, found what she sought for and urged him forward. "I'll be here after you're finished with everything," she promised him; unsaid was 'I'll wait for you until the ends of the universe,' though they still managed to travel between them in the silence of her melody and fill the boy's heart up with affection and reassurance. His smile was grateful and warm, let slip past his reluctant barriers a bit of the tenderness he felt for her.
"Thanks, Sora."
Azumane Asahi was a boy in love, with his heart humming along to the gentle tune of Soffia la notte on the early evening of a Spring day.

the original author's note i left up on wattpad:
ahhhh here it is! i've been stewing over this for days and i've finally got the first chapter out! that said, i'm probably? going to let myself pace and solidify a few more chapters before i put more out for this content, but i sort of wanted to put this out as a pilot chapter in the mean time? but anyways, i love asahi. he's a literal darling and i just want to hug him. it's all i want out of life.
also this is heavily inspired by your lie in april! i finished rewatching the anime some time back and i've been in a mood ever since, so i ended up scheming several small ideas until i finally wrote this! i'm like, 70% certain i won't add such heavy angst but... maybe just a teeny bit? still debating tbh :D
thank you for reading! i'll accept any form of criticism and feedback that you guys have for me and i'll do my best to review and improve!
notes for tumblr!
hi everyone! so here's the story i mentioned earlier! i'm a little nervous about how it will do? because most of the work i see here is from reader inserts and i debated making it one for a while but eventually i decided to stick with what's most comfortable for me :D it's easier for me to write when i have a character fleshed out in my head, so even if i did change sora's name to (y/n) she would still have the same appearance. if this interested you at all, please stick around! i'll try and do my best so that you all won't be bored by it!

Wakatoshi's eager to spend some time with his new manger, but she's busy getting to know the team. When they do finally talk, it's not the conversation he was expecting.
Is that a challenge? [Mufasa | The Lion King]
Saturday arrived faster than Wakatoshi expected. He was excited to help the team improve from last practice. And he wanted to see Yua-san. He still couldn’t believe that he managed to convince her to be their manager. From their brief interactions, she showed herself to be the type of woman that couldn’t be forced to do something against her will. It seemed that stubbornness was another trait that ran in her family. Thankfully, his explanation had appealed to her logical side.
When Wakatoshi arrived at the gym, he half expected to see Yua-san halfway done setting up the net. But the gym was dark. He pushed aside his disappointment by reminding himself that she would be here soon; arriving an hour early last week was an exception. Besides, he wanted to do some drills on his own again before the team arrived.
Kageyama-kun called him early in the week and they ended up peppering and doing spiking drills at Kamei Area for a few hours. It was good to see him; they spoke at length about everything that went wrong during the finals match against the Jackals. In the end, they concluded the opposing team managed to impose their will on the flow of the game and the Adlers’ mistakes were a result of that.
Regardless, they were annoyed that Hinata-kun had beat the two of them at the same time.
No matter. They would redeem themselves next season and bring the championship back to Oita where it belonged. He also told Kageyama-kun that he was welcome to drop by practice any time to check out the Tigers. The look of glee that crossed the setter’s face caused Wakatoshi to chuckle.
He was a super volleyball idiot like him, after all.
Practice would be held twice a week. 4:30 PM on Thursdays and 1:00 PM on Saturdays, for two hours at a time. However, Wakatoshi could see that extending especially if games were involved. The team’s collective energy was everything a coach could hope for. They had a full roster of twelve, and each player was capable of being in the starting lineup.
Rui-kun would be one of them.
He had incredible natural talent but was still willing to outwork anyone in the same room as him. Wakatoshi noticed in their first practice that the teen was hard on himself when he messed up during a drill or botched a play. However, he didn’t let that keep him taking instruction and trying again. And again. And again. He was stubborn and resilient and bent on improving. His tenacity would inspire his teammates to do great things throughout the season.
He reminded Wakatoshi of himself when he was that age.
Wakatoshi didn’t realize he had been practicing on his own for nearly an hour until he heard a familiar voice call his name. He caught the ball and looked toward the door. It was Rui-kun. He was energetic as ever and rushing to change out of his tracksuit. His stomach flipped. If he was here, that meant Yua-san was also—
He scowled at the tall man who entered the gym after Rui-kun. That wasn’t his manager. Was he wrong in assuming they would arrive together? Or was that his impatience? After a quick assessment, he realized that the man in question was the teen’s father. Their bearing and likeness were almost uncanny, from their curled black hair to their almost too-observant eyes.
By the time Wakatoshi consoled himself with the fact that his manager would be here soon, Rui-kun’s father bore a subtle look of displeasure like his. Luckily, he didn’t notice the two men sizing each other up. Wakatoshi’s irritation wasn’t directed at him, but the challenge had already been issued.
Rui-kun would most likely inherit his father’s height and broad shoulders; assets that would make him an intimidating ace. The older man’s stance was guarded, and the russet eyes that held warmth and affection for his son moments ago were now hard and almost cold.
The scowl Wakatoshi gave him wasn’t appreciated. So, he bowed in greeting and apology.
“Sensei, this is my dad!” Rui-kun said excitedly, still unaware of the tension between the two of them. “Yua-chan’s not here yet because she had a top-secret errand to do.”
“Please excuse me,” Wakatoshi murmured. “I was expecting Yua-san to bring Rui-kun today.”
The older man was silent for another breath before he bowed. “I’m Tetsuya, Yua-chan’s cousin.” His expression and posture eased when he flashed a dimpled smile. “You must be Ushijima-sensei. Rui-kun’s been talking about you ever since he got home from practice last week.”
Wakatoshi looked down at his student and grinned. “I’m flattered. But Rui-kun was the one who did all the work. He’ll be a powerful wing spiker one day.”
“You really think so, sensei??” The teen could barely contain his excitement at the compliment. “I’m not as good as you yet, but I’ll work hard to get there!”
“That’s what I like to hear,” Wakatoshi affirmed with a nod.
Tetsuya-san ruffled his son’s hair playfully. “It won’t be easy, but it’s hard to discourage this kid once he’s got his heart set on something.”
“Sounds like somebody I know.”
All three of them turned toward the laughing voice. Wakatoshi held his breath.
Yua.
His eyes slipped over her automatically. Her ink-black hair was pulled into a neat bun at the top of her head and her face was flushed a soft pink. Her freckles stood out more than usual as a result. This time, she was dressed head to toe in black. A track jacket and tapered joggers hung comfortably on her curves. He thought her legs went on for miles. When his wandering gaze snapped up to her face, it was his turn to flush.
The knowing look in her eyes told him that he had been caught staring. Again. She returned his appraisal and he tried not to preen.
“I finished earlier than expected,” she said cryptically, a smile curving her lips. Her gaze lingered on Wakatoshi for long seconds before she faced her nephew. She tucked a small brown package behind her back. When Rui-kun tried to lunge for it, she side-stepped him easily.
“Yua-chan! What is that??”
His aunt shook her head. “It’s not ready yet, sweetheart,” she scolded. “But I promise to tell you about it soon. It’s for the whole team, remember?”
Rui-kun huffed in frustration. “She won’t tell me no matter how many times I ask her.”
“You mean whine at her,” his father corrected wryly. “You know she’s not saying anything until she’s good and ready.
“Sensei, can’t you make her tell you what she’s hiding?”
Rui-kun’s wide eyes were certainly convincing. Wakatoshi tried to eye the package tucked neatly behind her back, but she quirked a brow at him and shook her head.
“I don’t think it’s wise to challenge our manager,” he said gravely. “She’ll make us pay for it later.”
Tetsuya-san scoffed. “Good thinking. You don’t want to piss her off.”
Yua-san stuck her tongue out at her cousin while Rui-kun turned silent and grumbled under his breath. Wakatoshi watched their family dynamic raptly. It was so different from the formality he had experienced growing up.
“C’mon,” she chuckled, nudging the teen gently. “Everyone’s gonna be here soon. Let’s set up the net.”
When they started to move to the back of the gym, Tetsuya-san’s voice rang out. “Hold on, Yua-chan. I need to ask you something before I go.”
She looked at her cousin and then glanced at her assistant coach apologetically.
Wakatoshi shook his head. “We’ll take care of it.”
With Rui-kun working silently alongside him, they had the net set up in minutes. Wakatoshi glanced over at the Nishimura cousins. They were probably speaking about family matters, but he was still curious. Tetsuya-san’s back was facing him, so he couldn’t gauge his reactions, but Yua-san’s expressions ranged from disbelief, exasperation, and then understanding. He nearly froze when her sharp gaze settled on him; were they speaking about him after all?
“Oh, no!” Rui-kun’s groan cut through his worried thoughts. “I forgot my kneepads!”
Wakatoshi cranked the line one more time before walking over to him. “Don’t worry about it. I haven’t worn kneepads since I was in high school.” He stopped wearing them after his first year because he felt they restricted him during his approach and take-off. And his playing style revolved around attacking. Most, if not all the defense was handled by his more capable teammates.
The teen looked relieved at his words. After checking that the net was even, he trotted to the gym’s entrance to say goodbye to his father. He said something that caused the older man to smile and nod approvingly. Faint tendrils of envy wound through Wakatoshi’s chest. Rui-kun was fortunate to have that support readily available to him.
Saitou-sensei had also arrived along with several of the other players. Yua-san was busy with introductions. Her smile was warm and bright as she spoke enthusiastically with the boys. Whatever she was talking about had them hanging off of her every word. Commanding a handful of teenagers was laughably easy compared to the strong and demanding personalities she had to deal with at her job. Wakatoshi sighed. Looks like he had to wait his turn for some alone time with her.
Practice started off with stretches, and then a few rounds of serves. Since all the boys were already playing with their respective school teams, they could skip some of the basic drills and focus on more complicated plays and rotations. From the list he received last week, Wakatoshi would observe and guide the rest of the team while sensei worked with the two setters, Ashida-kun and Yoshito-kun. It was essential to know their limitations early on, as they would be handling the ball the most.
Wakatoshi would split more duties with the other assistant coach when he was available, but he didn’t mind taking on all the responsibility for now. It forced him to re-examine the basics that had been drilled into him since he was a young player, which was always a good practice. When things became frantic and complicated in a game, his first instinct was to focus on the basics.
Each player was exceptionally skilled, and they had an excellent sense of their positions. But this wasn’t surprising because the rep selection process was comprehensive. The tryouts were more rigorous, but each team only wanted the best players to represent their individual wards. The schedule would be fast and difficult as well, with multiple tournaments and seeding games in addition to their middle school team schedule. This would be their first step in discovering if they wanted to play professionally in the future.
An hour went by, and Wakatoshi still hadn’t spoken to Yua-san. At the start of practice, she was preoccupied with taking attendance and learning everyone’s name. And once the drills started, she was busy collecting the balls and ensuring they were available for sensei or the next player. And he was focused on trying to help they players if they had questions or became frustrated
But that didn’t stop him from sneaking looks at her whenever he could. He admired her dedication. When she wasn’t chasing after a stray ball, she closely observed whatever drill was in play or made sure that each of the boys were hydrated. Her position was vital for the team’s well-being.
Depending on the player, she would get to know them on another level than sensei or himself. Since she was noting the practice stats and watching the team as whole, she could pick up on any changes in their overall energy and attitude. Her knowledge would be invaluable during games and later in the season if they made it to the playoffs.
Right now, her brows were knitted in concentration. She was standing beside sensei and rapidly writing in a bright orange notebook. It looked like he was explaining to Ashida-kun the nuances of timing a second tempo set with Rui-kun. Wakatoshi decided to take a break with the boys, as they would be setting up for a game to end the practice.
As he continued his quiet observation of her, Yua-san’s head lifted as she glanced around the gym. She nibbled her full lower lip in worry. He had just raised his bottle to take a drink when her honey brown eyes found him, and nearly choked on a generous gulp of water when she flashed that appealing smile in his direction. She bit back a laugh as he coughed and wiped his mouth quickly.
When Oyama-kun asked if everything was all right, all he could do was nod densely. He looked at his manager in disbelief, but her nose was buried in the bright orange notebook once again. The only proof of their exchange was his damp sweater and the grin on her face. Not wanting to embarrass himself any further, he quickly instructed the boys to get ready for the practice game. Several minutes after explaining the rotation, he heard someone clear their throat to get his attention.
“Sensei, do you have a minute?”
Wakatoshi sucked in a quiet breath. The lilt in Yua-san’s voice was pleasing to his ears. She stood in the setter’s position on the court, while he was in his usual position on the right, behind the attack line. She had taken her jacket off, which revealed a matching black tank top. He took note of the toned muscles in her shoulders and arms. He had been anticipating and dreading this moment all practice.
“Of course.”
“Where are your kneepads?” A stern look fell across her features as she waited for his reply.
He frowned, not expecting the accusatory tone in her question. “I don’t use them.”
“Why not?” A ball was wedged between her hand and left hip, and he noticed when her fingers tightened.
“I’m an ace,” he said simply. Why was she asking him this?
Her brows shot up in skepticism. “That’s your reasoning?”
“It’s how I’ve played since high school.” His frown deepened. No one had ever given him a hard time about it before.
“What if you need to dig the ball?” She countered. Her voice was hard now, and he almost took a step back.
Wakatoshi shook his head. “I try not to put myself in vulnerable positions. My teammates will always cover what I can’t pick up.” When the words left his mouth, he realized that his logic wasn’t completely sound. In the finals, he missed a few crucial points because he couldn’t dig the ball in time.
Yua-san’s lips pursed into a tight line as she held the ball up high in her left hand. His body instinctively crouched just before the ball dropped. But he was a step too far back to dig with his right arm; a pancake was his only option. No kneepads meant he needed to be cautious about how he landed. He had promised no injuries to his mom and himself. Shit, if he were wearing kneepads, he’d be able to slide to the ball with no issue. It was too late now; his feet and legs hurled him forward and he had no choice but to commit to the dig.
The ball landed with a hollow thud an inch in front of his outstretched fingers.
Wakatoshi’s chest took the brunt of his rough landing, so he was out of breath when he watched the ball roll away. Silence rang in his ears. Everyone in the gym had stopped to watch their intense exchange. He was sprawled on the ground, not quite sure about what had just occurred.
He looked up at Yua-san, expecting a smug look and fitting retort. Instead, she looked disappointed, as if she were hoping that he would prove her wrong. She offered a hand to him, and he took it carefully. He couldn’t ignore the strength in her grip as she helped him to his feet. He stood before her, ready to accept her lecture.
“You would’ve been able to dig that if you had kneepads,” she chided. Her voice wasn’t raised, but everyone could hear her because it was still quiet.
Wakatoshi shook his head. She was right, but his pride just took a beating, so he wasn’t ready to admit that to her yet. “Maybe. Nothing is guaranteed.”
“That’s true,” Yua-san said with a shrug. “But you had to think twice. There wasn’t enough time for a flying receive. So, you were thinking about the best way to dig the ball without hurting your knees because you weren’t wearing kneepads.”
Wakatoshi stared in disbelief and awe. She was able to pick up on his hesitation in a few seconds. Her next words struck him right in the chest.
“What if you were injured from that attempt? In a real game, you could’ve been sidelined. And you’d be even more pissed off because that injury could’ve been avoided.”
That was one of his greatest fears. Yes, injuries meant that he couldn’t play, but it also had the potential to cause long-term problems. He knew he was one of the lucky ones that had managed to avoid any major injuries, but he knew that his luck could change at any time.
“And think of the example that you’re setting for our team. You can do no wrong in their eyes. They’ll notice the things you do and the things you don’t do. You’re saying that it’s fine not to wear kneepads because,” she held up three fingers before counting them down. “One: it’s how you’ve played since high school and you’re not willing to change that. Two: aces are exempt because they focus on attacking and scoring points. And three: everyone else is expected to cover when you can’t dig.”
Wakatoshi felt like he was a novice again. He couldn’t remember the last time someone had laid into him this hard. But she was right and confirmed most of the frustrations from his disappointing finals performance.
“That’s selfish. And arrogant.” She paused to consider her words. “But that’s just my opinion. Of course, nothing is guaranteed. The ball is round. Any player can change the flow of the game. But preparation is the difference between winning a championship and losing it.”
His eyes flicked over to sensei, who was watching the two of them with a mix of interest and amusement. He clearly enjoyed seeing his best student being lectured by a woman who barely reached his collarbones. He shot him an imploring look, but sensei shook his head and shrugged.
Damn. That meant he agreed with Yua-san.
“Yes, you’re an ace. One of the best, in fact. But you can’t expect your team to follow you into hell if you’re not willing to do whatever it takes to keep the ball in play. That includes digging.” She paused again, then crossed her arms. “You know what? I don’t care if you wear kneepads or not. I care about the tone you’re setting for this team. It’s a safety concern; we can’t afford any injuries.”
She picked up the ball and thrust it into his hands. Her chin tipped up at him in a final show of defiance. “I did say that I wasn’t going to go easy on you. While I’m here, I’m going to do everything I can to give us the best chance of winning. I hope you can do the same.”
Everyone, Wakatoshi included, gaped when Yua-san turned on her heel and marched to stand beside the scorecard. She then directed a bow to sensei on the other side of the court. “Please excuse me for holding up practice.”
The older man smiled and waved her apology off. He then raised his voice to ensure that everyone could hear him. “Anyone not wearing kneepads won’t be playing in this practice game.” Immediately, several boys rushed to their bags and hastily put on their kneepads.
Wakatoshi took his place beside sensei as the boys positioned themselves on the court. He was still trying to wrap his head around the fact that he was soundly told off in front of the whole team by his manager. And the best part; he’s the one who insisted that she take the position. A grin crept along his lips as he considered her boldness. Though she wasn’t glaring daggers at him anymore, he could still feel the heat of her gaze from the across the court.
“Wakatoshi-kun?” Sensei’s voice was light. He wasn’t sure how his former student was processing that sound thrashing.
He turned to his sensei. “We were right to pick Yua-san as our manager. She’ll make us stronger.”
Sensei laughed this time. “I still don’t know how she didn’t end up playing volleyball. She would’ve made a terrifying opponent.”
Wakatoshi nodded. She had all the qualities of a fearless captain. He wanted to see what she was like in her element as an event director. “Her brother must be a monster of a player.”
“He is.” Sensei climbed the official’s stand adjacent to the pole. “He’s a mix of Tendou-kun and Tsukishima-kun.”
Wakatoshi’s nostrils flared. He was always secretly thankful that he never had to face Tendou-kun in an official match. The Guess Monster made a name for himself by breaking the hearts of wing spikers. And he could never forget the time Karasuno’s Tsukishima won a crucial third set in the Miyagi qualifier by blocking one of his spikes. A player with Tendou’s intuition and Tsukishima’s intelligence would be a worthwhile opponent. “I hope I get to play against him one day.”
Sensei blew the whistle to indicate the start of the game. “I’m sure you will. He’s always had his eyes set on the V.League.”
Wakatoshi was mostly silent during the first set of the game. Sensei did most of the coaching, but he occasionally stepped in to offer advice to the spikers.
When the teams switched sides, sensei chuckled and Wakatoshi gave him a curious look. “The more I think about it, I don’t remember anyone scolding you like that except Washijou-sensei.”
The tops of Wakatoshi’s ears turned red while he rubbed the back of his neck. He sighed. “Yua-san’s right. In the finals last month— I hesitated on a few crucial plays because I’m not used to digging. My playing style has been perfected for attacking.”
Sensei blew the whistle again. “Most of the teams you’ve played for have been built around your playing style. Especially at Shiratorizawa. But our manager made a key point. Everyone needs to be prepared to do anything to keep the ball alive. The teams we’ll be facing are just as good as we are, if not, better.”
Wakatoshi shot Yua-san an irritated look and she returned it. He half expected her to stick her tongue out at him. He looked away first. “Sensei, do you have an extra pair of kneepads? I’ll buy my own after practice.”
This time, his sensei’s smile was smug. “You’re lucky I’m always prepared.”

After battling with her problems for so long, she unfortunately found solace in self medicating, which eventually lead to an overdose that landed her in rehab at the end of summer. Her second year of high school was right around the corner, and with her parents away for the next couple months, she sought after the only thing that could make her feel again: drugs. During her first day back, (Y/n)'s strange and mysterious demeanour begins to intrigue a few of the most desired boys in her year group, especially one of them in particular: Oikawa Tōru. A shy, awkward attraction begins to blossom between the two, which was enhanced after a party - will it be allowed to fully bloom? Or will the relentless interference of the outside world get in their way? I decided to only describe (y/n)'s personality, height, weight (very briefly, no numbers involved), and age, as I wanted to allow women of all races to fully immerse themselves in the story. The details that are included are necessary for the plot. ⚠️TW: mental illnesses, mentions of suicide, substance abuse, and other similar themes, sexual/lemony themes (chapters will be flagged with ❤️) ALL ART USED ON THE COVER IS NOT MINE - ALL CREDIT TO THEIR RIGHTFUL OWNERS - I only edited them together, added filters/ decorations, and text✨
