27. That’s how many bricks went up the locker room wall, as you sat there, dissociating. Hailey, your girlfriend, and work partner had been getting on your nerves, and not in the fun way.
She would constantly only focus on work, spending long nights hunched over the laptop in the small apartment you shared together. Not only were you worried about her, but she’d been completely neglecting you as a girlfriend. Countless times you had tried to bring it up but were always met with a dismissive “I know babe, I’ll do better”, but she never did.
The locker room door swinging open brought you back to reality, as you saw the blonde you loved so dearly walk in… an angry look spread across her features. I really didn’t want to get into it with her right now, we had a stakeout in half an hour, but that didn’t stop her, clearly. “Babe? What’s wrong?”
Such a simple question triggered so many pent up emotions. She knew what was wrong. “Hailey are you for real right now? You know what’s wrong! You…” My voice shook a bit as I spoke, my voice raised. “You’ve been neglecting me completely the past few weeks!”
I saw her eyes widen in shock, I wasn’t the type to yell, ever. It seemed my outburst made her angry, she was always stubborn. “It’s not my fault you’re so fucking needy and work harder than you do!” She snapped; her tone sent a shiver down my spine. The moment the words came out of her mouth she knew she’d ventured too far. My face immediately dropped, as I didn’t respond, silently walking past her and out of the locker room, not hearing her faint voiced begging me to come back.

We arrived at the stakeout location, and everyone felt the tension between Hailey and I. You could cut it with a knife. Jay and Adam glanced at each other, seeing if they were picking up the same vibes, which they were. Our attention quickly turned back to Voight as he explained what exactly we were doing.
I thanked anyone watching from above with Voight paired me with Adam, instead of Hailey. He was like a big brother to me, plus he made stakeouts a lot less boring. He grinned as we walked away together, to our designated spot, aka an old, unmarked car, with no heater, in the Chicago winter. Fun.
“Y/N, you good? Been watching you stare into space for the last 20 minutes.” The chirpy voice pulled me back down to earth. “Yeah, just Hailey… you know how stubborn she is.” I sighed, as Adam chuckled lightly under his breath, nodding his head as we fell into a comfortable silence. Occasional small talk about a movie was all that happened for the next few hours, just wanting to go home and cry.
It was around 7:30pm now, been here since 3:30. Out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of a man wearing all black, quickly radioing and signalling to Adam to slowly get out of the car. We crouched as we walked behind a fence, until I stepped on an empty chip packet. The crinkling sound alerting the man to our presence, as he spotted us and started running.
“Suspect is on foot heading down North of Main, officers following” I spoke into the radio, breathing heavily as Adam ran behind me, I had always been the fastest in the unit. We were running, and as I turned around a corner, I felt a red hot pain in my stomach, as I fell to the ground.
He was hiding behind the corner with a gun. Now, a bullet from that gun was in me. As I collapsed, Adam came around the bend, seeing blood seeping out of my vest, as he cursed to himself, before he dropped down and applied pressure, making me groan in pain. “50-21 Ida, officer down, roll an ambulance to my location immediately!”
Hailey was on the other side of the block, her heart stopping once she heard the call, jumping out of the car and sprinting to me, it felt like she was going to pass out when she finally made it. Tears grew in her eyes as she saw me, lying on the ground with blood around me, Adam holding my wound down. She kneeled next to me, holding my head in her hands as tears fell down her cheeks, Adam still trying to stop the bleeding.
“Hailey I’m- “My voice was weak as I spoke, and raspy from screaming. She saw that. “Shhh baby... don’t speak, okay? You’re going to be fine yeah? I’m sorry about everything, just hold on. Don’t close those beautiful eyes” Her voice was strained and shaky, trying to convince herself more than me, that I’ll be okay. We heard the ambulance sirens, music to everyone’s ears. Everyone was speaking, it felt like I was underwater. All I could feel was Hailey’s hand on mine, as I was lifted into the ambulance before I fell asleep.
°.♡┈┈∘*┈୨୧┈*∘┈┈♡.°
No one had ever seen Hailey like this before. Pacing back and forth in the hospital waiting room, the rest of Intelligence watching her. Many had tried approaching her to try and get her to stop, but nothing worked. Her eyes were bloodshot and puffy, what if she never saw me again?
Everyone shot up the moment Will walked through the doors. He looked tired, his hair messy and his eye bags dark. This was hard for him; I was very close with both Halstead’s.
“She’s had surgery to stop the internal bleeding, and the bullet has been removed. We lost her twice on the table… but we got her back. She’s in ICU, probably going to wake up soon. But she’s okay.”
The collective sigh of relief from everybody was immense. Especially Hailey. Everyone was here primarily just to know you were alive, so they let Hailey go and see you, while they went home for the night, promising to come back in the morning.
My eyes blinked open, wincing at the harsh hospital lights. I groaned as I looked over, seeing Hailey staring at me. She was a mess, her face was red and dirty, her hair was all tangled, almost looked like she was the one who was meant to be in the hospital bed. Mustering up all my strength as I started to speak. “You need a shower Hails.”
She chuckled, her face lighting up. I was okay. “God Y/N, I thought I’d lost you. I’m so sorry about everything… you were right, I’ve been neglecting you and it’ll never happen again. I’ve taken a month off to be at home with you and help you heal… I was so scared.”
My heart melted as she spoke, even in my dazed, high on painkillers state, I knew how much I loved her. “It’s fine Hails, I promise you that. I love you, and I’m sorry I got shot and scared the shit out of you”.
Hailey let out a breathy laugh, knowing how much I loved scaring her, but not usually like this. She got up and moved the chair closer to me, leaning down and giving me a long kiss, as she held my chin.
“I love you more. Never scare me like that again.”

Bodyguard AU
pairing: upstead summary: AU where Hailey is the daughter of a politician, and Jay is hired as her bodyguard, much to her dismay. word count: 2k bingo square filled: Bodyguard Au for @resanoona #resa.3kfiestabingo masterlist
Tumblr media
Hailey swings open her front the door, and takes a step back in confusion when she’s not greeted by a delivery guy with a package. Instead, she’s faced with a man dressed in jeans and t-shirt, and he’s empty handed. He speaks before Hailey can recover from her surprise. “Hi, are you Hailey Upton?” When Hailey just nods, he continues, “I’m Jay Halstead, your dad hired me as your bodyguard.”
A frown immediately takes over Hailey’s features. Hailey knew her dad, a career politician, was worried because of the anonymous threats that had been coming in recently. When he voiced these concerns, Hailey had assured him she could take care of herself. He had insisted he send a bodyguard, at least until the threats could be further investigated. Hailey thought she had done a pretty good job of diffusing her fathers concern by the end of the conversation, but as always, he went and did what he wanted anyway.
“My dad’s just paranoid. Thanks for coming, but really I’m good. I don’t need you.” Hailey starts to close the door in his face, but Jay reaches his hand out, stopping the door.
He stares at her with piercing green eyes, studying her. “Look, I’m not trying to get in your way, but your dad’s paying me, so I’m here until he tells me not to be.” He says with a shrug.
“My dad still thinks I’m a little kid that needs protecting.”
“Let me guess, you can protect yourself.” He raises an eyebrow and Hailey swears she recognizes a glint of amusement in his eyes.
“Yes, as a matter of fact, I can. You can go, really. I won’t tell my dad you left, and he’ll probably still pay you.” Hailey shrugs, this time successfully closing the door in his face. She feels a bit guilty for being so rude to him, but she consoles herself with the fact that this guy got off easy, and he’ll probably get paid for all the work he’s not gonna do anyway. About a half hour later, Hailey grabs her car keys and purse before pulling open the front door. She stops short when she realize that the guy from earlier is still there on her front porch. He’s stares at her as she steps outside and she stares back at him, frozen.
“This is ridiculous,” Hailey finally recovers, walking past him and down the front steps, he follows, just a half step behind. If he’s anything, it’s persistent.
He clicks the keys to an escalade parked on the street. “It’s really not worth fighting this, Hailey, just let me drive you where you’re going.” His voice flows from behind her and she sighs. Hailey has never liked driving, and she assumes if she turns him down, he’ll just follow her anyway.
“Fine.” She huffs, stomping over to the car and getting into the passenger seat.
“Where are we going?” He questions after walking around and getting into the driver’s seat.
“I’m going grocery shopping. Literally grocery shopping. You really think someones gonna try to kidnap me in the parking lot of trader joes?” He just shrugs and turns the car on, completely ignoring Hailey’s little outburst as he starts driving toward the store.
He drives in silence for a little while, and finally, Hailey decides that if she’s going to have to spend any length of time with this guy, she should at least try to make conversation. “How’d you get this job anyway? You don’t really…look like a bodyguard.” He’s tall, but thin. He has well-defined muscles peeking out from behind his green t-shirt, but he’s not really the 6’5” giant, wide, muscular type she’d expect as a bodyguard.
“Your dad knows someone in my unit, told him he was looking for a bodyguard, and I got recommended.”
“Unit? Like in the army?” She questions, unsure of what that means.
“No, I work for the intelligence unit for the CPD, I’m a detective.”
“Don’t detectives just like interview people and shit, are you sure you’re even qualified for this?”
One side of his mouth raises in a grin, and Hailey counts that as a little victory, getting him to crack a smile. At least he finds this a little bit amusing, it might not be so miserable after all. “I do a little more than just interview people, and I thought you didn’t even need a bodyguard, so what’s there to be qualified for?”
He’s got a point there. “Right, right.”
“This is bullshit and he knows it.” Hailey plops down on the hotel bed, rubbing her hands over her wonderfully makeup free face, although not for long. She’s so tired of getting made up just to stand behind her father with a fake smile on her face. She’s thirty years old. She has a job and a life to get back to that doesn’t involve fake smiling behind her dad to win over a bunch of rich people who don’t really give a shit about anything or anyone but themselves.
Jay chuckles from the chair across the room, and it has quickly become one of Hailey’s favorite sounds.
She sits up, unable to stop the pout on her face. “It’s not funny!” She glares at him, but he only smiles wider.
“It’s just a couple hours. We’ll get ice cream on the way home.” He bribes her, knowing her well enough now to know that having something to look forward to will make the night that much more bearable.
“Soft serve?”
“You mean shitty fast food drive thru ice cream.” He answers back.
“Yes,” She respond, a big smile crossing her face.
Jay shakes his head, but he smiles too, “Fine.”
Jay answers midway through the first ring, “Hailey, is everything okay?” His voice is urgent, worried, and it makes her pause before formulating an answer.
“Yeah, I uh, where are you?” She questions, suddenly feeling silly for calling in the first place.
“I’m at work.”
“Work?”
“Yeah, I’m a detective, remember?”
“Oh, right. Sorry for bothering you.”
Hailey almost says goodbye, but Jay interrupts her before she can. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing, sorry, go back to detecting.”
He laughs on the other end of the phone, actually laughs and a warmth spreads through Hailey’s chest at the sound.
“But you’re okay?” He asks, genuine concern in his voice.
“Yes.” She insists. “I just…” She pauses trailing off, she what? Missed him? She can’t say that. “There’s that event tonight.”
After the first couple of weeks, the anonymous threats stopped, and Hailey’s dad started to relax a little. He changed the terms of Jay’s contract, so he doesn’t have to accompany Hailey everywhere, only to events. Over the past couple of months since then, they’d fallen into a pretty comfortable routine. Jay got into the habit of showing up really early on event days, and just sticking around until it was time to leave, so as the hours ticked by without him, Hailey started to wonder.
“There’s someone else coming, they should be there any minute.” He reassures her.
“Why someone else? Did my dad fire you?”
“No, Hails, I just got stuck at work, so I called someone else to cover.” He pauses and when she doesn’t respond, he says, “Anyone can do the job, remember, you don’t need protecting.” He reminds her of what she told him the first day he showed up. If he really thinks that’s what she’s worried about, he’s way off.
“Yeah, you’re right.” She halfheartedly replies. “I’ll see you later, Jay.”
“Bye Hailey.”
~
The new guy sucks. Hailey thought it was the worst thing ever to have Jay as her shadow at first, but she’d grown to appreciate his little comments and the way he somehow managed to stick close by without it feeling like he was invading her personal space. This new guy is acting like he’s someone special, glaring at anyone who dares to look at her, and he’s way too close all the time.
He barely responds to any attempts at communication. He basically just grunts. He doesn’t make funny comments or laugh when she tries to make light of a situation. Every time he shows up, Hailey miss Jay even more.
~
Hailey knows she should tell someone, like maybe her dad or James, her new bodyguard, but she doesn’t. Her dad finally started to relax about her safety and give her a little more freedom, and Hailey doesn’t want to tell James anything because he still makes her feel uncomfortable.
First, it was emails, emails about how her dad needed to vote a certain way or how they disagreed with her fathers politics. The email address it came from was just a series of numbers. Hailey had no idea who was sending them, so she just wrote them off at first. It didn’t seem like anything too crazy.
Then, it turned into text messages and voicemails sounding angrier and angrier, but it was always centered around politics and her dad’s voting power. They weren’t exactly threats to Hailey, so she continued to ignore them.
The texts began to get more frequent and then more personal. James was still accompanying Hailey to events, but she started to make every excuse not to go to any.
Hailey didn’t mean to stay out so late tonight. She had just gone over to a friends place for a girls night, and time got away from her. Her friends apartment was only a few blocks from where she lived, so when she left her house in broad daylight earlier today, it made sense to just walk. But Hailey is about two blocks from her friends apartment and three from her own when she gets another text. She thinks about turning around to go back, but she doesn’t feel like her friend would be able to do much either. Instead, Hailey ducks into a convenience store, and dials a number she hasn’t called in a while.
“Hello?” He answers.
“Jay, I’m scared, can you please come get me.” She doesn’t have time to explain, and Jay doesn’t ask for more information.
“Where are you?” Is all he asks.
Hailey rattles off the cross streets and the name of the convenience store. “I’m just a few blocks away, I’ll be right there. Wait inside.”
He hangs up and Hailey makes her way toward the back of the store, where she’s far enough from the door, but she still has a clear view of the street.
She get another text that makes her skin crawl. It all ends tonight. The texts didn’t turn this cryptic until today, and Hailey takes a deep breath.
A van pulls up in front of the store and Hailey almost hides behind a rack of chips, but the door slides open, and it reveals Jay. Without realizing it, Hailey sprints toward the van and jumps in. Jay closes the door behind her, and Hailey launches herself into Jay’s arms. This is the closest the two of them have ever been, but Hailey can feel her heart beating erratically in her chest and she wants to be even closer. She wants to feel safe.
“What happened?” Jay questions, checking Hailey over to make sure she’s okay. Hailey opens her mouth to start explaining when the loudest sound erupts around them, and she can barely process that there are actual bullets being hurled at the van before Jay pulls her to the ground, shielding her body with his own. He pulls something off the wall of the van and holds it against her exposed back.
There’s yelling, and shouting in the crackling of a radio. Hailey can make out that Jay didn’t come alone and that whoever is on the other side of the radio is pursuing whoever it was that shot at them. Jay holds her still until they’re met with only silence, then he immediately begins checking to see if she’s injured. When he realizes they’re both unharmed, he pulls her close to his chest. Hailey doesn’t want to move from her spot in his arms, but after a few moments, he insists they have to go to the police station.
He drives them there, and when she gets out in the underground parking lot, she slips her hand into his and he doesn’t resist. He leads her up a stairwell into what looks like an office. Other people are there and he guides her past them into a back room that looks like a break room, and he motions for her to sit on the couch.
Hailey explains everything, the emails, the texts, everything. When Jay asks why she didn’t tell anyone, she admits that she didn’t feel safe with her new bodyguard and she didn’t want to tell her dad. Jay just looks stressed the entire time she’s explaining.
“And you quit and left me with James because you didn’t want to do it anymore or you don’t like me or whatever,” Hailey rants, feeling so emotionally drained and just needing to get the words off her chest because she can’t hold them in anymore. She’s been wondering about this since Jay didn’t show up that one day and then she never got to ask him about it he never showed up to another event.
Jay’s eyes lock onto Hailey’s and an expression that she can’t quite read crosses his face. “What?” She demands.
Jay breaks eye contact, looking down. Hailey waits impatiently until Jay finally says, “I didn’t give up the job because I don’t like you.”
Hailey’s eyebrows furrow in confusion. Why else would he quit unless he didn’t want to spend time with her. Unless the job was so miserable that he couldn’t do it anymore.
“Hailey, I gave up the job because I do like you.”

The day that everything changed
Tumblr media
Summary - The day that Hailey Upton’s life was thrown off its axis started off like any other.
‘I’m from Robbery-Homicide. There’s been a Robbery and a Homicide here. So I’d appreciate it if you vacated my crime-scene.’
Notes - Today marks a year since I posted by first fic and now I’ve published almost 40k words which is just insane for me. This is also my 10th published fic so wanted to do something a little different to mark the occasion. This is a sort-of introspective fic into Hailey during Fagin. I hope you enjoy! AO3 Link
The day that Hailey Upton’s life was thrown off its axis started off like any other.
She woke up to her alarm as she normally did. She had a black coffee and a bowl of oatmeal. Put on her suit pants and blouse, clipped her badge and gun to her belt and headed out to work.  Just as she was reaching the district, she heard the call over the radio about a bank robbery in progress at North Shiller Credit Union at 680 North Michigan and so she clipped her radio on her hip, jumped in her car and headed to the scene.
There were already a number of police when she arrived, walking through the doors she spoke to the officer there.
I need you outside to move the yellow tape back 50 yards and roll in the crime lab. Now.
It was only then she noticed the plain clothes officers who were on her scene.  This was her crime scene and she was sure to let them know.
Detective Upton. Robbery Homicide
The older man, clearly the ranking officer, let her know in no uncertain terms that it was his detectives that recovered evidence and saved a woman's life and they would be running point.  The two detectives in question were a young brown haired female cop, who, if Hailey had to guess, would estimate to be her age and a taller man, slightly older but still fairly young, who was clearly trying not to laugh at the situation.  She wasn’t sure what was funny so she paid him no notice.
I’m from Robbery-Homicide.  There’s been a Robbery and a Homicide here.  So I’d appreciate it if you vacated my crime scene.
When she had returned to her station after examining the crime scene, she had found out that the Sergeant she had met, Hank Voight, had gone above her and had decided that his Intelligence unit would be taking the case.  As a young female detective she was used to older male cops trying to push past her and ignore her and her ideas.  But Hailey knew her own worth.  This robbery was one in a long line that she had been chasing for weeks and she was damned if she was letting someone else take it from her.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
She knew the Intelligence Unit worked out of the 21st district so she headed across town.
Greeted by a formidable looking desk sergeant who Hailey was sure she recognised but couldn’t quite place her, she demanded to be let upstairs to see Sergeant Voight.
Looking back on it now, her first mistake of the day was not recognising Trudy Platt when she entered the district.  Her second was when she accidentally knocked her coffee cup so the desk sergeant was covered in hot coffee, not exactly sealing the deal for why she should be the one to take the case.
You got balls trying to steal my case.
All the officers in the room, which when she scanned it included the male and female cops she had seen earlier, an older gentleman sat in the corner, a tall black cop and a fresh faced white cop who looked to be finding the whole thing hilarious.  The young man from the bank was staring right at her but she couldn’t figure what emotion he was currently experiencing, a similar expression from the bank was pulling his lips into a tight line.
The commander called her and Voight into Voight’s office and with just a small look back at Trudy covered in coffee, she followed suit.
The negotiations didn’t exactly go as planned and she was ordered to hand over her files to Voight’s team, not an idea that she was particularly thrilled about.  And she made sure the Sergeant was aware of this as she exited his office.
You know. I always heard you were a son a bitch, now I know it’s true.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thinking about it, handing over her files was fine; she knew she’d get a call from them any minute because her chicken scratch handwriting was impossible to read.  Her mother had always chastised her about it in school but being left-handed and having to write with an ink pen had always meant her handwriting was either smudged or a mess; she had settled on a mess.
Sure enough the phone call had come through and she had headed back down to the 21st.
She should have expected the sass from the desk sergeant, after all - she had spilt coffee all over her.  She wasn’t sure anyone had ever called her Detective Goldilocks before, but she smirked, she had definitely been called worse.
Trudy Platt. Worked Robbery-Homicide like 15 years ago?
As she looked at Platt, Hailey’s brain was flooded with images from that night.  When the woman in front of her had made her feel safe.  Perhaps the safest she had ever felt.  Her thoughts were interrupted at this moment by one of the Intelligence officers telling her that Voight was waiting for her, so with a final look back at the bewildered desk sergeant, she followed him upstairs.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spann can’t physically rob banks anymore, so I think he recruited teenages from his old neighbourhood to do it for him, life Fagin.
It was a breath of fresh air to be discussing her ideas with someone who seemed to be taking on board everything she was saying.  Voight had called her in because it was her who understood the case and had the missing piece, and he believed in the connections she had made.
Next thing she knew she was driving down to Spann’s car lot in the passenger seat of his car.
Lavar Spann, we have a warrant to search your business and any records found within.
Searching through the records, she wasn’t sure what she was looking for but Voight was taking the lead on talking with Spann giving her the chance to look through things whilst being able to keep an ear on the conversation.
I think the job skills you’re teaching is bank robbery.
Men like Spann made her teeth itch.  Using children. Putting kids in harm's way and allowing them to take the fall for something he had orchestrated.  These were the cases that they had to solve.  To ensure the correct person would go away and do the time.  Voight seemed to be on the same page as the conversation took a slightly darker turn when he threatened to return and have a less civil discussion. Hailey glanced away at this, if that was the way Voight wanted to handle this case then she wasn’t going to argue.  She needed it solved too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back at the district, the team and Hailey were gathered around the board trying to fit the rest of the pieces together whilst Voight and the female detective, Lindsay, were in his office requesting a warrant from the DA.  Their request seemed to have been denied when they both left the office and joined the discussion at the board with less than positive expressions on their faces.  The decision was made to go and stake out Spann and try to catch him in the act, with some actionable evidence the DA would be unable to refuse the request for a warrant again.  When Voight offered for her to join the stakeout, she nodded and agreed.  She needed this.
Sense of humour.  Don’t get that much in my current unit.
The conversation turned as it often did, especially when an older detective or officer was involved, to her meritorious promotion.  She was aware she was young for a detective, and not as many years on the job as others in her position but she also knew she had earned that promotion.  The older detective, Olinksy, tried to dig a little deeper as to whether it was an earned promotion or, as most people assumed, she had been given it as a favour.
I was undercover for a year. So, put that in your pipe and smoke it.
The younger detective, Halstead, clearly wanted to know more about the undercover case and if she was honest, she wished she could talk about it.  It would stop the questions dead in their tracks if she could just reveal everything that had happened and everything she had had to do in that case.  But unfortunately she couldn’t.
No offence but this is the first time in the back of your van.
She wasn’t normally one to flirt on the job but she couldn’t deny there was something about Detective Halstead that meant what she was saying was coming out much flirtier than it normally would.  I mean sure, he was cute, hot even in an unobjective kind of way and he was definitely giving back some of the sass he was receiving.  After this case was solved she would head back to Robbery-Homicide and not see him again.  So a bit of harmless flirting never hurt anyone.
They spotted a young kid talking to Spann and then climbing onto a motorbike, a Kawasaki, the same type that was being used by the other teenagers who robbed the banks.
We got to go after him!
When Olinksy shut her down, initially she was put out.  This was the perfect opportunity.  They had proof that Spann knew the kids involved and was clearly giving them instructions or orders.  But on reflection, his assessment that they couldn’t follow a motorbike in a van was correct.  She just wanted to solve this case so badly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
That teenager we saw on a dirt bike when we were in the van - Sammy Ray.
The pieces had started to fit together.  She had found a POD camera which showed that Sammy had been spotted a block away from the house where the two brothers had been shot and she had got a statement from a neighbour who had said she had seen Sammy running out of the house and jumping straight onto his bike.  Checking through the records she found Sammy had a history of violence and now did errands for Spann.  It had all clicked and she relayed the information to the team with a small smile on her face.  Not a smile for the case but a smile for the fact they were so close to being able to pin this on Spann and get him put away for good.
When the Sergeant congratulated her on her work, she felt a swell of pride surge through her chest.  She tried not to let it show.  She knew from her current unit that pride in oneself wasn’t always a favourable quality.
The team returned with Sammy Ray in tow and Detective Lindsay pulled her in to question him alongside her.  Her old boss never let her do any interviews so she wasn’t going to turn down this opportunity.
The pair worked well together.  Lindsay took the lead and then nodded when she wanted Hailey to jump in.
That was smart, using a gauge.  We couldn’t trace the ammo.
The kid was tough to crack.  Hailey and Erin could both tell that Spann had his hooks deep into the kid.  He felt a sense of loyalty to him for whatever reason and they couldn’t break through it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Halstead said you wanted to see me.
Voight had called her back into his office after the case was closed.  She had heard what he had done for Corey Jenkins and even with the rough start they had had, she was impressed by his loyalty to the kid.
I don’t know many, if any, cops that would do that.
Instead of trying to make what he had done a big thing or make it all about him.  The Sargeant just gave her a small nod and so she turned to leave.  Hailey had not been expecting the next statement to come out of his mouth.  The offer of a job in Intelligence.  She nodded and suppressed a smile.
Open or close.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You don’t remember me, do you?
Hailey knew she looked different than she had done then, hell she had barely recognised Trudy when she had entered the district the previous day.  But she needed to explain.  She needed to tell Trudy who she was and what the Sergeant had done for her.  Her life had changed course that day and it was thanks to the woman standing in front of her.  And she deserved to know that.  As she started to explain what had happened on February 9th 2003, she could tell Trudy was starting to remember that evening.  And although it had probably been just a regular shift for Trudy Platt, for Hailey, it was everything.
I became a cop because of you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Hailey accepted the temporary position in Intelligence, she thought it would be a good experience, a chance to shine somewhere new and get out from under McGrady.  She was looking forward to working with Trudy closer, after all, it was thanks to her she had joined the academy in the first place.  She thought it would be a couple of weeks whilst the missing officer was on furlough.  She never expected that the team would become her family.  She would go to hell and back for any one of them and knew they would do the same for her.  The tall man with the smirk would become her husband.  He would change her in ways she hadn’t even realised yet.  Make her willing and able to accept love again and to be able to love in return.  And yet here she was, a permanent member of Intelligence, married to her partner and best friend and forever thankful for the day she walked into the bank and everything changed.

“It's his birthday today”
The words were out of Hailey's mouth before she even realised she was going to bring up the topic. It was something she always avoided, any time things headed in that direction she did her best to divert the course of things. She could feel Jay turning to look at her but she kept her focus on the hockey game they were watching. The feeling of Jay's gaze was enough to make her bring her knees up to her chest as the feeling of regret left her wishing that she had managed to stay quiet.
“Who’s birthday?” he asked, and out of the corner of her eye, she could feel him move a little but she continued to watch the screen, unable to look at her husband. This was not a topic they ever broached, not anymore, not feeling able to share more than the gist of the situation before it all felt like too much. Before all those feelings she has spent years bottling up, start to feel like they are going to explode out of her chest and she’d be left cleaning up the shrapnel wounds for a long time to come.
“My dads,” Hailey's voice came out flat, having spent the day in a sort of haze.
The quiet avoidance of the topic was ruined when she saw the notification, one that had never felt the need to show up for literally anyone else's birthday, but today, today it decided that it was going to force her to deal with the emotions she had spent years repressing. Just 12 words, piercing the fabric that she had sown together all of these years and threatened to let it all come spilling out. “It's dad’s birthday today! Let them know you are thinking of them.” that taunting message, as if she hadn’t attempted to let her dad know what she had been thinking a million times over the years. As if it was a simple and easy task as if it was something she could actually do without wishing the earth would swallow her up.
The sounds from the tv seemed to dampen but it was unclear to Hailey if Jay had lowered the volume or if her dissociating state was the cause. Jay remained silent next to her and she could feel the guilt in bringing up this while they were having their first day off together in what felt like ages. “I don’t know why I brought this up, I’m sorry” her voice sounded as flat as before as she spoke, lacking the energy to try and sound like she felt okay.
“No, hey wait, my lack of response wasn’t me wishing you hadn’t brought it up, it’s never going to be that, I always want to hear what is on your mind. You know that, it's why we do our thing” she could hear the determination in his voice and something cracked inside of her, just a little. She could feel the slight warmth from his words spread through her chest, slightly pushing aside the chill that had settled over her when she saw that notification hours ago.
She had gone to the kitchen to get them both some coffee while Jay lay in bed still waking up when it lit up her screen and the weight descended over her. She wasn't entirely sure why she didn't mention it when she walked back into their bedroom with the coffee that ended up failing to warm the chill that had taken over. She hadn't imagined that Jay would react in a way that caused her more pain, it wasn’t that she didn’t want to be able to share with him the things going on in her mind. But when she made her way through the bedroom door and found her husband bathed in the slivers of sunlight that were making their way through the blinds and his hair all ruffled from sleeping she just couldn’t bring herself to break the rare morning peace. It wasn’t something they got to fully enjoy often, always running off to work or to one of a million errands that always seemed to pile up. So she passed Jay his coffee and placed hers on her nightstand before climbing back into the warmth of the shared bed and letting Jay pull her into his side and she tried to push the notification out of her mind.
Now, Hailey found herself glancing over at her husband and his soft eyes were looking at her with so much emotion she couldn't bring herself to process. The way he was looking at her just added to the overwhelming intensity at which everything seemed to be spinning around in her head so she looked away so she could force out the words “I always thought it was my fault. Everything that happened, I would spend so long trying to understand why he did what he did but I would always end back in the same place.”
“Hailey” she could hear his pain at her words and it killed her. It wasn’t her intention to make Jay feel any of the pain she was feeling herself. That wasn’t something she wanted to burden him with but everything she hasn’t said over the years, to him or to anyone else was fighting to escape along with all of those feelings she's spent years trying to ignore.
“From all the stories I heard growing up things seemed to take a turn after I was born, not before, not when it was just my brothers.” she couldn't stop the words now that she had started “I was a handful as a baby, I wouldn’t sleep, I wouldn’t let anyone else get any sleep either, and I guess things spiralled from there, and I know, I know I can’t control what I did as a baby and that doesn’t excuse everything that followed but I have spent so many nights wondering if I had just been more like my brothers if everything would have been different. And I know it's pointless to think about it because it can't be changed now” she could feel the weight on her chest ease just a little as she spilt the thoughts she had never let anyone access before.
Jay ached to reach out and comfort his wife, it felt almost painful to not have some point of physical contact with her right now, but the way Hailey was sitting with her knees pulled up to her chest almost as if she was trying to occupy as little space as she possibly could made him hesitate.
“God, it’s been so many years” the words fell alongside a bitter scoff as she chastised herself for getting so into her own head this many years after everything. “I’m sorry, I'm fine, everything is fine” her voice wavering only further betraying the words Jay would have known were lies even if he couldn't have heard her.
“You know you don’t have to pretend with me” the words came out weak as Jay struggled to hold himself together. “Can I touch you?” he asked hesitantly.
Reaching out her hand Hailey felt some of the tears that had been burning her eyes spill as Jay interlocked their fingers, she could feel the cool silicone of his wedding band and she closed her eyes letting herself breathe in the safety she feels from knowing Jay is there with her as she scrubbed harshly at the tears that fell with her free hand.  He is always in this with her and she can always be there for him in the same way and that thought allows a little more warmth to spread through her chest.
Needing Jay to know just how much his being there meant Hailey forced herself to look into his eyes fighting past the overwhelming emotion it stirred inside of her so she could say “You know, I never thought I would find what we have, I never thought I would be able to trust anyone enough”
A smile spread across Jay's face, and Hailey noted the way his eyes lit up as he took in her words before he replied, “I never thought I would find you, but I am going to be forever thankful. I think that all that we are is the greatest of victories, considering everything”
Hailey could feel the aching in her chest, the need to be closer to Jay, to leave no space between them so she let go of his hand begrudgingly only so she could move so her back was resting on his chest and Jay seemed to get the message and wrapped his arms around her and held her tight against him. Hailey focus on breathing the same rhythm as Jay, and she could feel some of the pressure leave her body as her breathing matched his.
“I spent all those years wondering if it was something I said or something I did that caused things to get too bad, and I just can't figure out what made everything snap as it did, I hate the not knowing, I think sometimes I hate that more than anything else, the constant what if I did something different. There is so much I used to wish I could ask him, but the thought of opening up that door always gets rid of that idea pretty fast” she admits, feeling the safety of Jay's embrace destroying some of the barriers she's built up around this over the years.
“If you ever decide you want to, I will be there at your side, you will never have to face him alone” Hailey could feel the vibration of his words as he spoke and the sensation was comforting serving as a further reminder that he was right there “even if I do have to restrain myself from fighting him.”Jay tried to keep his voice playful with those words but she could hear the truth in those words.
“Thank you, but I'm not going to let you fight my father, Jay” a small smile gracing her lips and Jay took that as a win.
“Offer stands, but I respect your decision” she felt his embrace tighten just slightly and only for a second and she reached to return the gesture in the form of a gentle squeeze on his arm. The non-vocal, ‘I'm right here with you, I'm not going anywhere is as clear as if they had spoken the words.

More Than Words (Upstead)
The little ways that Upstead show their love for each other besides saying "I love you"
Tumblr media
(Im suppose to be studying for exams but i'd rather do anything but so please enjoy the result of my procrastination! fair warning - its not really proof read so please ignore any potential grammar mistakes)
Obviously they are always saying "I love you", but given everything that happened the first time Jay said it, I think that they are always trying to show their love beyond words
Jay is definitely giving little touches throughout the day. He does good to respect their agreement at work but outside of work? This man cannot keep his hands to himself
I think it would be little things like putting his hand on the small of back
In the mornings, if Hailey is out of bed before Jay, he will go behind her, wrap his arms around her and put his chin on her head. They will stay like that for a while before either one speaks
If they are both in bed at the same time, he either has her pulled on his chest or his arms around her
It's just as comforting for Jay as it is for Hailey. He has this need to have her close so he knows she's safe.
If they are out at Molly's with their friends, (especially after he's had a few) he is glued to her side. Whether his hand is on her back, on her thigh or he's holding her hand, its clear to everyone that they are there together
Speaking of hand holding, I think Jay and Hailey are constantly playing with each other's rings
They definitely have their own code surrounding hand holding, 1 squeeze means I love you, 2 means Im here and it will be okay
I think Jay also likes to play with Hailey's hair, if they are on the couch and she's in front of him, at some point his hands are in her hair
"its always so soft, I love it"
Hailey tries to teach him how to braid it, but he fails miserably. She will never tell him that she caught him watching youtube videos on how to braid hair after that
Hailey loves to be close to Jay, he's her rock and she doesn't want to leave that
I think Hailey's hand always finds her hands to Jays back or his chest. It makes her feel secure and Jay absolutely loves it
These two flirted with coffee for SO long
Its almost like a competition on who will by the other coffee
Before they lived together there were several incidents of them both showing up with two coffees
Jay loves to take a sip out of her coffee cup. He has his own but he always insists that Hailey's is better
I feel like Jay is a good cook. For Hailey's birthday, he makes a special dish that Hailey had as a kid
It absolutely makes her day
Hailey strikes me as a good baker, she's always making muffins or something. Even though they are married and living together, she still likes to wait until they get to work to surprise him with one
She would put it on his desk with a little heart sticky note
Jay loves it and it brightens his day every time
Jay was never a candle guy until he met Hailey, then he got use to all the scents around the apartment
He goes out and buys candles all the time
He's so excited to tell Hailey about them
"this one reminds me of you"
I mentioned before that Jay loves Hailey's hair and she knows this
Once she figured out his favourite shampoo thats all she would use
These two are always looking at each other
They can tell what the other is thinking without either speaking a word
After an especially hard case, before they can talk Jay just looks at her - the look tells her that everything will be okay, he is there regardless
Hailey just nods
Anytime Ruzek someone says something stupid, their eyes find each other
Jay raises his eyebrows and it always makes Hailey lose her composure
Jay loves to look at Hailey, she is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen
Hailey always catches him staring
Hailey also loves to stare at Jay, but i feel like she's a bit more subtle
In the mornings, before he wakes up she just lays there and studies his face - every freckle that is sprinkled across his cheek
They LOVE watching each other work. They are both so proud and there is so many moments that are just like hell yeah thats my husband/wife
Jay is always smiling at Hailey and it makes her melt
Hailey has the same affect on Jay
Even though they are married, they still get butterflies
I just know Hailey is an amazing singer and you cant tell me otherwise
She didn't sing often but when she did it would make Jay so happy
She started singing more just for him when she realized this fact
Every time Jay asks if Hailey is okay, he's also saying he loves her, and she knows it
When they are on their way to work, Jay always puts on the playlist Hailey made for him.
Its his go to now because it reminds him of her

Exciting ||Jay Halstead x Daughter and reader
Jay has to take his daughter to work for the first time and he’s not excited about it.
For the one that voted Jay x daughter on the poll (this is not a Christmas story though)
Jay wasn’t comfortable with the idea of taking his 4 years old daughter to work, but seemed like luck was not on his side. The girl was on vacation, Y/N was on a work trip, the nanny got sick, Will was on shift and the little girl’s grandparent’s couldn’t take care of her all day long, so he had no choice. He called Voight, who with his raspy voice and without any problem said “Bring her.”
He sighed, “Ok, baby girl. You are coming to work with me today” He notified his little daughter who was sitting with her short legs hanging from the couch.
“To the police station?” Her eyes were shining bright out of excitement.
“Yea”, her dad chuckled. “Mommy will pick you up later, when she comes back home from her trip, ok?”
“Okay. I am excited!” Excited was the last feeling she learned in school and from then on she would use it for everything.
“I am excited too”, he lied, he was more nervous than anything. “Go get your backpack”, he ordered and when she was gone he muttered to himself, “I’m already running late”
It wasn’t common to take one’s son or daughter to the bullpen, but is wasn’t so strange either. Voight and Al had done it in the past with their kids; Burgess and Adam had done it with Malayla too, even Kevin had to take his little sister from time to time. This was the family Hank talked about.
Jay went upstairs with a small pink and shinny backpack with unicorn form on his arm, making a funny contrast with the gun hanging from his hips.
“Where’s the baby girl?” Adam said when he saw his friend arriving alone.
“Platt stole her from me”, he answered. He would have arrived even later if he had waited for Trudy to give her back to him. Kim smiled at the image.
“We haven’t seen her in a while”, Al peeked his head from his hidden desk to participate in the conversation, “A bit of her cheerfulness will do good to this place”
“Well, she is, and I’m quoting, “very excited” to see you all”, the proud dad smirked.
But as much excited as she was, the baby Halstead was very shy to even say good morning to them. As soon as Trudy Platt carried her upstairs, the girl ran towards her father as fast as she could.
“Why are you crying?” Jay asked in a very low voice, while sitting her on his lap.
But the one answering the question was Platt, “She started to worry when she noticed you weren’t around downstairs and then silently started crying”
Ashamed, the little Halstead girl hugged her dad’s neck and buried her face on his shoulder. A chorous of “aw” was heard around. This wasn’t what she expected, visiting the police station didn’t make her feel excited after all.
“It’s alright”, Jay kept whispering into her ear. It was only after a few minutes later that she calmed down, but even when she was acting as if nothing had happened, she was still embarrased.
Al passed by from the coffee room to his desk and handed a coockie to the girl. She hesitated on accepting it, she first turned to her dad who nodded in approval and she stretched her tiny arm to take it.
“Precauted girl. Good”, Olinsky smiled at her and she smiled back.
“Why don’t you take your colors and get to work in your coloring book, hm?” Jay said more like an order as he put her down. He couldn’t really advance in his work if she was there right beside him.
They walked to an unoccupied desk right infront of Adam. The girl climbed the chair as her dad took her belongings out of the unicorn backpack, “There you go. I’ll be right there if you need me. Remember to…”
“…be quiet, shhh” his daughter completed.
She stayed there for a while, coloring different pages. The detectives, specially Kim, would praise her artistic work whenever they had to walk by her side. She liked Kim, that woman was funny, but she couldn’t really take her eyes off of the man who had gave her the cookie: Alvin Olinsky, but he was too busy to noticed.
“Daddy”, she silently stood up an whispered, trying not to distract the people around, “I don’t want to color anymore. I want to draw”
“Uh, let me check if I have something for you to—“
“I have some white sheets in here”, Hailey opened a drawer and handed a bunch to the Halstead girl. She liked Hailey too, she had a bright smile.
“How do you say?” Her father encouraged her before going back to her place.
“Thank you, Hailssss”
She was immersed in her own world, drawing, coloring and cutting. She stood up to get closer to Adam and touched his leg to call his attention.
“How do you write ‘I love you’?” She asked the detective.
“Oh!” He took a notebook and a pen, “Very easy, let me just show you”
Jay looked up to witness the scene, altough he couldn’t hear any word they were exchanching, “Hey, sweetie”, he called out, “Let Ruz work, ok?”
“No big deal” His collegue said handing her the sheet.
A few minutes later, the little girl stood up once more to go with her father. She stretched her hand to hand him a very colorful circle of paper.
“Wow! Is this for me?” Jay exxagerated his emotion, and then melted when he read the phrase ‘I love you’ followed by a crooked heart.
With excitement, she explained it was a cup holder: “Yea, you can put your mug there”. Following orders from such a smooth voice, Jay placed his mug over the gift.
“Just what I needed” He kissed her head. When she withdrew of his side, Jay immediatly took the paper with the witten phrase and placed it in a spot where he was able to see it all the time.
Before going back to sit on her chair, the girl passed by Al’s desk and stood next to him staring, until he finally noticed.
She took him by surprise, a cute surprise, “Hey, you scared me!” That made her laugh.
“What do you like the most?” The kid asked wothout any other introduction, “Ducks or unicorns?”
Detective Olinsky took his time to answer the question. He observed that Halstead’s daughter was wearing a T-shirt full of unicorns, her pink shinny backback also had the shape of a unicorn, so he went by that, thinking it would be the correct answer.
“Unicorns, I love unicorns”
But she didn’t had the reaction he expected, instead she sadenned, “Oh! I was going to draw a duck for you”
Being in a space close to Olinsky, and paying attention to what his daughter was doing all the time, Jay listened and couldn’t help to smile to the reaction of his parter.
“Oh, well, I love ducks too!” Alvin tried to amend his error.
“A duck, then?”
“Yea, a duck!”
And she moved her tiny legs as fast as she could. Both detectives shared a look and laughed.
It didn’t pass a lot of time when the girl was next to Olinsky’s chair again, but this time he noticed. Without speaking, she handed to him the drawing of a duck happily swimming in a lake.
“What? Is this for me?” She nodded. There was something peaceful in his voice that she liked. “Thank you very much! I really love it. What’s this?” He pointed to a brown circle tha was close to the animal. The answer make him smile showing his teeth.
“A cookie”
“Well, this masterpiece deserves to be in a special place” The detective took a bit of tape and pasted the drawing where it could be seen by everyone.
Little Halstead ran to his father to tell him what just had happened.
“That’s not fair!” Adam teased her later on the day. “I want my own drawing too! I showed you how to write that phrase, you gotta remember that!”
“It will have to be another day”, Jay intervened. “Time to pick everything up, your mom’s on her way to pick you up”
“Mommy’s back?” She asked with the same bright eyes she had when realizing she was going to the police station.
“Yeah!” Her dad smirked.
“I am excited!” She stated while putting her stuff back into the backpack.
“Say goodbye, time to go. Mommy’s downstairs”
She waved her little hand to everybody in the bullpen, “Bye bye”. She even peeked her head into Voight’s office, “Goodbye, Serge”
“You are leaving already? Goodbye, little one” Hank said in a very friendly tone, “Come back soon, whenever you want”
She laughed at the idea, “I will”
It was a bit hard for her to walk down the stairs. “Do you need help?” Jay asked with his arms opened to carry her and she jumped to him.
As soon as she spotted Y/N at the desk with Trudy she yelled at her. Jay put her down on the floor when the stairs were over and his baby ran towards her mom, who picked her up in a tight hug.
“Mommy!”
“Ugh, how much I missed you” Y/N said covering their daughter in kisses.
“Me too!”
“Did the detectives threated you good?” Trudy asked, “How was your day at daddy’s work, hm?”
Wothout hesitating and with a lot of emotion, the girl answered “Oh! It was exciting!”

A Little Bit of You and a Little Bit of Me
Tumblr media
Hailey has had pregnancy scares in the past- one or two, over the years- but none have felt like this. This is different. She wants this.
--Seven snapshots in becoming parents
Hello! This is very unlike anything I have really wanted to write in the past, but the idea rattled around in my head until I just went for it. I'm going to blame the multiple pregnant people I have had in my life this year. If you're not into a pregnancy story, this probably isn't the one for you! I have some very, very vague descriptions of medical stuff, but never graphic. It's broken up into seven sections, and I'll put the week of pregnancy as the header. It is set in the universe of the show, but the details don't really matter. Canon is unimportant here. Happy reading!

THE BEAR — 1
Tumblr media
Summary:
"What about Jason?"
"Jason Halstead?!"
The two of them shared a serious look that soon turned into an amused one, the soft grin on their mouths quickly replaced by a loud snicker that echoed within the walls.
"Might as well call him Loser," Jay mumbled once they calmed down, watching Hailey cross that name off the list with her pen.
"That's mean," she commented, "But you're right," she couldn't help but agree with him.
They were not naming their son... That.
— or, Hailey and Jay's unexpected journey to parenthood.
A/N: hello, Upstead cubbies! 🧸 Chicago... The Bear... I had to make it about Upstead somehow! I'm so excited to share this fluffy short-fic with you, and I hope you enjoy it. Can't wait to read what you guys think of it 🤗

Pride and Joy
Summary - ‘Congratulations Class of 2042,’ Sergeant Jay Halstead announced loudly and proudly from his position on the small stage to the rows of fresh faced rookies staring up at him, a pair of familiar green eyes sparkling back at him in the middle of the crowd. His speech was for all the recruits and he was truly proud of each and every one of them, but his eyes were centred on one in particular. ‘Welcome to the Chicago Police Department.’ AO3 Link
‘Congratulations Class of 2042,’ Sergeant Jay Halstead announced loudly and proudly from his position on the small stage to the rows of fresh faced rookies staring up at him, a pair of familiar green eyes sparkling back at him in the middle of the crowd. His speech was for all the recruits and he was truly proud of each and every one of them, but his eyes were centred on one in particular. ‘Welcome to the Chicago Police Department.’
Jay had taken up a position teaching at the academy years ago when Hailey had returned to work after her maternity leave had ended. They had decided together that one of them should work a 9-5 whilst their daughter was young and then in school so they could be around and he had volunteered. He had already been half way out the door in Intelligence, itching to get his hands on his own command and knew if he spoke to Trudy, a position at the academy could be his. The Desk Sergeant had hinted at it a couple of times already, she knew he was eager to move on probably before he had even fully come to terms with it himself, she had that sixth sense. Teaching at the academy, shaping the lives and careers of the people who would follow in his footsteps, it had a certain appeal.
Hailey had wanted to stay in Intelligence a little longer, although she had thought that after a couple of years she would transfer elsewhere having learnt everything the department could offer her. But Voight’s shock retirement had opened up the Sergeant position for her and she had accepted it with open arms. Intelligence was no longer the same place it had been when they had both worked there and had fallen in love as partners in that very same bullpen.
Hailey had shaped it into one of the most respected units within the CPD. There was no more cloak and dagger, no more hiding evidence or fudging reports, everything was done by the book. Hailey was a trusted and valued Sergeant and people were desperate to prove themselves to get a chance to work underneath her - she had her pick of officers from across the city. The unit was even more of an eclectic mix under Hailey, with years of experience ranging from a couple of months out of the academy to 20+ years on the force. But somehow they all worked seamlessly together and not only handled some of the toughest cases the city had to offer but were pulled into assisting on cases further afield in the state and elsewhere.
Jay was so proud of his wife, he knew returning to work after the birth of their daughter hadn’t been easy but Hailey had taken everything in her stride and become the leader he knew she was born to be.
Their daughter, Ivy Halstead, was a gift and one they never took for granted. She was the light of their life, even when she sometimes made Jay’s nerves fraught with worry.
Being the daughter of two police officers came with its own challenges and ones that Hailey and Jay were not blind to but they did their best and she had grown into the most wonderful young woman. She was now 22 years old, living in a small apartment she shared with her college roommate Anya just a couple streets over from where Hailey and Jay’s first apartment sat. It was a full circle moment, and Ivy rolled her eyes whenever Jay would mention it.
Ivy Halstead had followed in her parents footsteps and was currently sitting in the crowd in her dress blues as her father announced her graduating class from the Chicago Police Academy. Although if you meticulously checked the paperwork, there would be no other Halstead listed as attending the graduation, student or staff.
‘Are you sure you don’t mind Dad?’ Ivy had asked as she had sat filling in her intake paperwork for the academy, the paperwork spilling across their family table in the kitchen.
‘Of course not pumpkin,’ Jay said honestly, trying to calm the stress he could see was bubbling up in his daughter, she took after her mother that way. But he’d had years of experience of calming them both down.
‘It’s not that I don’t want to be a Halstead,’ she muttered, tapping the pen frustratingly against the table, avoiding meeting his eyeline.
‘But it would be easier for you if you didn’t have the same last name as one of the instructors,’ Jay finished for her.
‘If you were just one of the instructors Dad it wouldn’t be so bad, but you’re the instructor, in charge of everything and-’
‘And you want people to know you got everything on your own merit,’ Jay smiled. He understood his daughter's concern. He had seen plenty of people get treated differently due to their parentage or links within the department and he didn’t want that for his own child. Ivy was going to be an excellent cop and she didn’t deserve to have any of her experience tainted because of some supposed notion of nepotism.
‘It’ll be weird going by Upton,’ Ivy hummed.
‘You know people will still know who your Mom is right? Firstly, you’re her twin,’ Jay chuckled as Ivy shook her head dismissively but a smile tugged on her dimpled cheeks and Jay’s comment was proven right, ‘and secondly, she’s one of the most respected sergeants in the CPD.’
‘But she’s not the one people might bump into walking the hallways,’ Ivy said exasperatedly. ‘This is why I should have become a firefighter.’
Jay chuckled.
It had looked like a serious possibility for a while and although the idea of his daughter having to wear a bulletproof vest everyday scared him, the thought of her running into fires terrified him even more.
Ivy had joined Girls on Fire, Stella Kidd’s female led firefighter in training program, as soon as she was old enough to do so and loved it. She had grown up alongside first responders; her parents and godmother were cops, her uncle was a doctor and a large number of the Halstead’s family friends were residents of Firehouse 51. She’d rubbed shoulders with both firefighters and the children of said firefighters since she could walk and talk.
For the longest time it had looked as though that would be the career avenue she would pursue and Jay and Hailey were as supportive as anybody could be. Jay turned up to sessions to cheer on his daughter as often as he could, would go on runs with her to build up her stamina and would take her to the district gym whenever she asked.
As much as the thought of having to wait for news of her coming home safe after big calls terrified him, if it made his daughter happy, he would always support her. He would never stand in her way. He wasn’t that kind of father and had sworn to himself when he had first held that tiny baby in his arms and felt his heart burst with love that he never would be.
‘Ivy’s doing a ride along on 51 tomorrow,’ Hailey said one evening whilst the pair were sitting on the couch, a bottle of whiskey and two glasses sitting on the coffee table between them. ‘Stella called earlier to let me know.’
‘Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a dull day for them,’ Jay murmured. He’d been at some of the calls Stella’s crew had taken in the past few months and he didn’t want Ivy anywhere near them. Although the crew worked seamlessly together, the idea of Ivy being within breathing distance of a fire was not one he wanted to entertain.
‘And when she decides to apply for the academy?’ Hailey asked, nudging her husband with her toes.
‘Then I’ll be the loudest person in the audience when she graduates top of her class,’ Jay sighed. ‘Doesn’t mean I won’t be worried for her.’
‘You’re a good father Jay,’ Hailey smiled.
‘Just wish we had a kid who wanted to be an accountant or something equally dull and safe behind a desk.’
‘Because both you and I do so well behind a desk,’ Hailey chuckled whilst Jay frowned.
‘Maybe she could be the exception to the Halstead rule,’ Jay shrugged.
‘A kid with your genes was never going to be able to sit behind a desk babe, time to face facts.’
Jay had been fully anticipating Ivy to come home one day and announce she was going to be applying for the CFD academy, he had prepared himself mentally for such an occurrence, but she had shocked them all and announced her intention to go to college instead.
She didn’t know her major yet but told her parents she was leaning towards Criminal Justice. They were proud beyond measure when she got accepted into UChicago. She’d be close to home and it was an exceptional school. She’d excel there, like she did with everything else that she put her mind to.
They were much more surprised when during her Christmas break Junior year, she told them her intention of applying to the Police Academy when she graduated.
It shouldn’t have been a shock for them when both her parents were in the force but Ivy had never expressed much interest in their jobs since she was old enough to truly understand what they did. Sure, as a kid, she had loved walking proudly into the district hand in hand with her mother and knew her Mom held a position of power within the building with all the nodding and yes Sarge’s she received, but the ins and outs of it had never been a topic of conversation that she ever initiated.
‘I know the risks Dad, I spent years watching you and Mom walk out the door with a badge and a gun on your hip not knowing if you were coming home,’ Ivy said with a huff. The family sat around the dining room table, their dinner starting to cool on their plates having been untouched since Ivy’s big announcement. ‘I thought you’d be proud of me,’ she said quietly, the hurt edging its way into her voice.
‘Of course we are proud of you,’ Hailey said without hesitation, reaching across to place a warm hand over her daughters.
‘We are the proudest parents in the world pumpkin, we just want you to be certain before you decide,’ Jay nodded.
‘I’m certain,’ Ivy said firmly. ‘I’ve been speaking to Trudy about it.’
‘Of course you have,’ Hailey chuckled.
‘And she didn’t sugarcoat it,’ Ivy implored, her eyes darting between her parents as if trying to telepathically communicate that she knew what she was getting herself into.
‘Well that I believe,’ Jay said, knowing that Trudy would have given her the truth, the good, the bad and the ugly.
‘Is it so bad that I want to follow in your footsteps?’
‘No darling, of course not,’ Hailey said.
‘I guess it’s better than you being a firefighter,’ Jay scoffed.
‘Well, now you mention it…’ Ivy chuckled as her parents shook their heads, the lighthearted air returning to the Halstead household as the family’s attention turned back to their dinner.
Ivy had entered the Academy with the weight of her parents' names firmly on her shoulders, even if she was only going by one of them and not the other. It didn’t matter, her classmates found out who her father was soon enough and although no rumours of any inappropriate comments reached Jay’s ears, he knew what people would be saying behind his back.
But Ivy just brushed it off and took it in her stride, she worked harder than any other recruit and proved to anyone who thought she had gotten in on nepotism alone that she deserved to be there. Jay’s heart nearly burst with pride when reports fell on his desk with nothing but glowing words on his daughter's antics.
‘Detective Aert came to speak to me today,’ Hailey said, spearing a piece of chicken onto her fork and popping it into her mouth.
‘To what did you owe the pleasure?’ Jay asked. Detective Aert was part of the Narcotics Unit. She was hard headed and even quicker tongued but she was exceptional at what she did. She’d be leading the unit before long and Jay knew her promotion would be supported widely.
‘Turns out she had heard about Ivy and wanted to know if she’d be interested in Narcotics when she graduated,’ Hailey said nonchalantly even though both Halstead’s knew how big of a deal getting noticed by a specialist unit was when you weren’t out of leading strings yet.
‘Damn,’ Jay mused. ‘I assume you told her to talk to Ivy.’
‘Of course,’ Hailey smiled. ‘I said I’m her mother at home but she’s not under my command on the force and to speak to her training officer at the academy. She just smiled and said that was exactly the answer she was hoping for.’
Jay chuckled, Aert was a hard nut to crack but Ivy could learn a lot from her.
‘Did you tell Ivy?’ He asked, already knowing the answer.
‘Nope,’ Hailey shook her head, taking a sip of her wine. ‘She wouldn’t thank us for getting involved in her career, even if that’s exactly what I didn’t do. She’s too independent for that.’
‘Just like her mother,’ Jay winked.
As it turned out Detective Aert had put in a formal request to have Ivy assigned to Narcotics when she graduated and Ivy had bounced up and down with excitement when she had told her parents. She was the only person in her graduating class to get a nod from one of the units and the fact that it was a unit where neither parents had a direct influence meant her classmates were more supportive than she had anticipated.
Nothing could have provided Jay with more pride than saluting his daughter as she stood in front of him in the same dress blues that he had worn for years and handing her the certificate to confirm she had graduated from the academy. Hailey would give him crap later for crying as he shook her hand but Jay didn’t care. His pride needed an outlet and it had chosen tears.
His daughter was officially a police officer in the Chicago Police Department, and as much as he was concerned for her and her safety, he knew she would do her city proud. And that made his heart want to burst.
‘Gene and Georgetti’s?’ He said as he walked over to where Ivy was standing with Hailey, proudly showing her certificate off.
‘Are you footing the bill Sarge?’ Ivy sassed, nudging her shoulder into her father.
‘Such cheek from a Cadet,’ Jay responded.
‘Not a Cadet anymore Dad,’ Ivy smiled. ‘It’s Officer Halstead now.’
‘What happened to Upton?’ Jay asked curiously but was unable to stop the smile forming on his lips.
‘I’m a Halstead through and through, guess it was time people started to know it,’ Ivy shrugged.
‘I’m staying Upton though,’ Hailey said, cocking an eyebrow at her husband.
‘Upton on the streets, Halstead in the sheets,’ Jay winked, ignoring the vomiting noises Ivy made from beside him. ‘Alright then, deep dish is on me. First, this is for you,’ he said, tugging out a small black velvet box from his pocket. The box was about the size of a normal ring box and Jay handed it over to his daughter with a smile.
‘I thought we said no presents,’ Ivy said exasperatingly.
‘Well you said that but I never agreed,’ he grinned. ‘Call it a fathers prerogative’
Ivy rolled her eyes but accepted the box anyway, looking up at her father before opening it. Her eyes widened when she saw what was lying nestled in the purple silk lining.
‘Dad,’ she said, her voice hitching in her throat.
‘It’s the bullet they took out of my shoulder,’ Jay said, reaching into the box to tug the necklace out. The bullet was hanging from a delicate gold chain. He gestured for Ivy to turn around so he could latch it for her around her neck.
‘The bullet from when Angela…’ Hailey asked, tailing off slightly, her voice soft and gentle as her eyes zeroed in on the necklace Jay was securing behind their daughters neck.
‘The very same,’ Jay nodded as Ivy turned around, her fingers tracing the cool metal now resting against her uniform. ‘The bullet they removed after it nearly killed me. And then your mother almost told me she loved me. And it was the time I realised that I had something to lose. It told me that I had to stay safe, not just for myself, but for her. She wouldn’t love me anymore if I put myself in danger again.’
Jay felt his wife link her fingers through his and he gave her a gentle squeeze.
‘That thought kept me safe and this bullet will do the same for you. It’s got both of our love in it,’ Jay smiled.
‘Who knew you were such a softie Dad,’ Ivy whispered but she wrapped her arms around her father in a tight hug nevertheless. ‘Thank you.’
‘Love you kiddo.’
Jay had known for longer than he cared to admit that he wanted to share a life with Hailey and wanted to have children with her, but he had never let himself imagine the life that was waiting for him when he finally plucked up the courage and kissed her that night another lifetime ago.
Their path together hadn’t always been smooth and heaven knows their path to parenthood was even rockier than most but no matter the road they had taken, he wouldn’t have changed a moment of it as he walked out of that graduation, his wife’s hand in his and his arm flung over his daughter’s shoulders. His family was perfect, and his pride knew no limits.
And he was ever so grateful Ivy hadn’t decided to become a firefighter.
