sage ⇢ what ‘medium’ of art (poetry, music, fiction, paintings, statues etc.) is the most touching to you? why do you think that is?

Depends on the emotions I'm going for. Fiction is the most capable of making me cry, but really good architecture provokes a sense of awe. I think it's a difference in scale. Fiction is personal; architecture is public.

aloe vera ⇢ what’s something (mundane) you really want to experience in life?

I really wish I could swim. I feel like going to the beach (or the pool, or a water park) would be way more fun if I could swim.

nutmeg ⇢ how’s your room/home decorated? do you have a specific theme or style going on?

Oh lord, this is actually kind of funny.

So I do have an Aesthetic™ for home decorating, which is mostly very plain neutrals (white, beige, grey, gold). And florals (and sometimes owls). Like, the other day my parents gave us an old mattress they were going to toss to use as a guest bed/day bed, so we wandered around the Macy's clearance section to get twin-sized bedding, and the ultimate winner was this:

My philosophy is that neutral-colored stuff pairs with other, later-bought stuff easier and makes the actual colors pop more (in my workroom, that's one of my pillows, two of the posters on my walls, and a big cashmere wrap I got for my wedding). It's way easier to match white with white than it is to match, say, red with a different red.

I also tend towards shit that is honestly kind of pretentious. Like, the posters on the walls of my workroom? A Mary Cassatt painting of a girl sewing and a French realist painting of a girl knitting. Because my workroom is for knitting and sewing. I also have two Waterhouse paintings in my living room and a different pre-Raphaelite painting of a girl with an owl.

On the flip side, I also really like cheap kitschy shit. I'm not quite Rae Dunn levels of kitschy, but I unironically have Pioneer Woman curtains in the kitchen that I got from Walmart. They look like this:

Like, the only thing that is stopping me from buying a bunch of grandma decor with big flowers or butterflies or whatever is that a lot of it is Christian kitsch and that is an immediate turnoff for me.

@zrayak, on the other hand, does not like this at all. He thinks neutrals look boring and wants a lot more color than me, he likes more contrasting color than me (he wanted our wedding colors to be teal and red), and his decorations of choice include taxidermied frogs. They look like this:

tl;dr: Neutrals, florals, and owls, which is an ongoing debate between me and my husband.

I like to think that Gus calls Matt “Matty” because of ttlgr, I guess we will find out soon enough if that’s the case! I also think they would continue to use squirt and jerk in a teasing way

🕸️ - what does one do that scares the other?

Ohhh I can see this getting competitive. Gus starts making these terrifying elaborate illusions to scare Matt but when Matt tries to retaliate by scaring Gus with a clown mask he’s so traumatized that he traps them both in a horrifying illusion. Anyway, they never mess with each other again after that

Oh, I have SO many LOL (For simplicity’s sake, I’m gonna call Caleb’s partner Avalyn)

Caleb was VERY wary of Avalyn at first. He was raised to fear and hate witches, after all

It took a long time for Caleb to finally accept that he was in love with Avalyn. He was mostly nervous, but he was also very confused and scared

When Avalyn was able to convince Caleb that pda was okay, he could barely keep his hands to himself. He always needed to be touching her somehow

Once Caleb learned Avalyn was pregnant, he began to carve all sorts of toys for the baby

It was also at this time that the two of them began to work on the Portal door. Caleb really wanted his child to know both of the worlds they came from

After Caleb’s death, Avalyn spent a good amount of time hunting Philip down. Unfortunately, once he changed his name and cut his ears, she lost track of him and had to give up on her search. She never really forgave herself for that

Red Boy's Name

I'm thinking about writing an article on the origins of Red Boy (Honghai'er, 紅孩兒; a.k.a. "Red Son"). While doing a little reading, I found a detail that had previously escaped my attention. Yu's (Wu & Yu, 2012) translation states that the character's "childhood name is Red Boy" (vol. 2, p. 219). However, the original Chinese says: "[His] milk name is known as 'Red Boy'" (Ruming jiaozuo Honghai'er, 乳名叫做紅孩兒). Wilkinson (2000) explains Chinese naming conventions:

The different names were used at different stages of a person's life. The xiaoming [小名] in infancy, the daming [大名] in youth, the zi [字] and hao [號] in adulthood and the shihao [諡號] after a person's death. [...] Shortly after birth, children, from emperor to peasant with out exception, were given a milk name (ruming 乳名, xiaoming 小名, or xiaozi 小子) by their parents or a wet nurse. The ruming were the familiar terms for infants still used today such a Xiaobao 小寶 in Mandarin or Abao 阿寶 in Cantonese (little treasure); Xiaosanzi 小三子 or Asan 阿三 (little no. 3). A common type of ruming are those made up of a prefix such as a 啊 or xiao 小 plus the last character of the ming [childhood name], as in A-lin 啊林 for Wang Hailin 王海林 (p. 98). Three months after birth, it was normal practice for the father to choose the given name (ming, sometimes called xueming 學名 or daming 大名 to distinguish it from the xiaoming) ... (p. 98).

This means that "Red Boy" is a baby name used by the Bull Demon Family. However, Lee (2011) notes, "[I]t may so happen that a person will go through life and never have any other name" (p. 110). This appears to be the case with Red Boy as the novel never mentions a daming. But it does say that his "Adult assumed name [hao] is known as 'Great King Holy Infant'" (Hao jiaozuo Shengying dawang, 號叫做聖嬰大王).

his is the blood o' the southerner.

in the south, people wear things thinly. they've got little amount o' layers on 'em, and sometimes their clothes are sheer to aid them workin', or interactin', or socialisin', under the sun. people 'ave said that the sun shines brighter in dorne, so they'd wear even less, but gendry has a hard time imaginin' that. the state o' king's landing could be smothering as is, hot with the heat o' the sky and the people crammed in the narrow spaces o' fleabottom as the city roars under the baratheon's ruling. how could any places be hotter than what he knows ?

then, o' course, he wouldn't know much, would he ? a boy born and raised in the streets o' the most congested place in the crownlands his whole life, he wouldn't imagine any place colder than perhaps that one season when once, for weeks, the rain and storm couldn't stop hailin' through the city. 'course, back then, he didn't know yet he could've ever been travellin' through riverrun. he didn't know yet he would learn what it's like t' sleep under the flimsy shelter of trees, or rotted wood, and on floors with varied degrees o' dirt and worms and bugs alike.

he didn't know he'd be in the north.

( he didn't know he'd be touched the way he had. marked, like he's some o' curse. some of dirty thing that could be easily killed if needed. )

'ver since, gendry's a bit more grateful for any extra layers of cloth he could find. what he didn't need, he learns to store for later. in the meantime, what he could, he'd cover. it  — feels safer this way, he learns. feels good. gendry doesn't need t' be seen. it's never been his goal to be... to be famous or 'nythin'. to be watched. admired. ( he's learnt that baratheons tend to be warriors. they were built massive, and strong, and capable. gendry doesn't even need to be that, really. he needs no name of his in the history books, he doesn't. just a good place, really. somewhere t' sleep. to work at. no more killing. no more losses. tha's all. )

it is only a coincidence that the animals they've gathered needed skinning and scalin', and gendry has learnt not to get blood on his clothes. he rolls up his sleeve.

The Itty Bitty Ditty Committee is always together in our hearts, so they can never truly be apart 💜 (Gene loses focus until the next gig then he’s dragging Peter, Rudy, and Darryl around like a mama cat with her kittens)

Once a month, the Fischoeders bring in a box of donuts, of which there is always half of a cherry-filled missing. Yes it does make a mess and no Felix is not going to clean it up. Calvin will continue to never pay workers comp.

Tina and JJu never have an official title between them but hang out two and a half times. Zeke is there on the half time, but she doesn’t mind this once because it was a date in an parking lot where some neon signs look kind of cool at night. Pesto takes his family on vacation to Martinique (still trying to hit all the places in the song Kokomo), but Jimmy Jr does call Tina at least once.

And one more for fun… Bob plans one (1) fun, romantic date for Linda to a dinner theater, and he doesn’t complain at all even when they pick him for audience participation (no, she imagined that grumbled “oh my god.”)
