This is STILL Happening in 2023...Black Hair Discrimination
Texas high school sends Black student back to in-school suspension over his locs hairstyle (msn.com)
Tumblr media
A Texas high school sent a Black student back to in-school suspension Tuesday for refusing to change his hairstyle, renewing a months long standoff over a dress code policy the teen's family calls discriminatory.
George, 18, already has spent more than 80% of his junior year outside of his regular classroom.
He was first pulled from the classroom at the Houston-area school in August after school officials said his braided locs fell below his eyebrows and ear lobes and violated the district’s dress code. His family argues the punishment violates the CROWN Act, which became law in Texas in September and is intended to prohibit race-based hair discrimination. The school says the CROWN Act does not address hair length.

George will spend the remainder of the year in in-school suspension, extending a punishment that was first imposed in August over his hairstyle that district officials maintain violates their dress code policy. A referral given to George Tuesday, Dec. 5, said his hair is “out of compliance” with the dress code at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas. “We are just trying to take it day by day. That’s all we can do,” his mother, Darresha George, told The Associated Press. “We do not see the light at the end of the tunnel. But we are not giving up.”
School officials said George was sent to the disciplinary program for violating the dress code and the tardy policy, disrupting the in-school suspension classroom and not complying with school directives. As he completed his punishment there, district spokesperson David Bloom said George was told he would go back to in-person suspension unless he trimmed his hair.
George's family has filed a formal complaint with the Texas Education Agency and a federal civil rights lawsuit against the state’s governor and attorney general along with the school district, alleging they failed to enforce the new law outlawing discrimination based on hairstyles.
The school district has filed a lawsuit in state district court asking a judge to clarify whether its dress code restrictions limiting student hair length for boys violate the CROWN Act.
State Rep. Ron Reynolds, a Democrat and chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, said he planned to file an amendment to the law during the next session that “specifically addresses length to stop their pretextual argument to not comply with the Crown Act.”
“They are acting in bad faith to continue discriminating against African American students,” Reynolds said in an email.
George said he feels like is being singled out because there are other boys in the school with longer hairstyles than his. He was denied an exemption that the family requested because of the hairstyle’s cultural and religious importance.
“It’s frustrating because I’m getting punished for something everyone else is doing, growing hair, having hair,” George said.

With the Senate( white Republicans) blocking the CROWN Act, I would like to point out… the CROWN Act benefits white people too.
Just think about it. While it’s specifically for those of African descent, your son with long hair or your bright neon blue hair will be protected.
It’s like the 14th amendment, it’s for a specific group but everyone benefits.
So now your son with long hair has to cut it or lose his job or you have to dye you hair to a natural color or lose your job… because of racism.

So a law banning racial discrimination  based on hair was passed to which my response is good. Governor Whitmer signing that law is an important step in tackling one of the many legacies of racism in this country.

Darryl George, a 17 year old junior, has served more than two weeks of in-school suspension. The school claims it is because of the length of his hair and not the style, which violates school dress code.
Discrimination based on natural hairstyles violates the CROWN Act, which went into effect in Texas on September 1st.

i feel very frustrated about the trend of giving chil body hair bc if it was any other anime twink i would be thrilled its just that it seems to only be because people are SO afraid of him looking young they have to make him hairy to justify liking him in ships.
meanwhile it does directly go against canon (he literally is supposed to look like a child. this is integral to both his character and his race's lore as a whole and it makes no damn sense that he would be mistaken for a child if he has body hair i mean. cmon.)
and it's like. some men are hairless. some men look young. when youre a trans man in your 20s-30s its especially common to be mistaken for a teenager, even more so if you're not on t. and short. these traits do not make you less of a man or an adult. :/
#rot posts#listen its like. i just wish ppl werent doing it for the reasons they seem to be#you NEVER see tiny little men get body hair in fanart i should know ive been in multiple fandoms where i was the only 1 givin bitches hair#but it also sucks when its like. clearly from a place of discomfort and not wanting him to seem young#rather than actually loving body hair#for example where is laios with body hair. wheres kabru. mithrun. literally any other character#(senshi us a slight exception on account of semi canonically having hair)#it just feels like a performance for no one. ok yeah good job you made chil look like a hairy 30 year old#did you pay attention to how that totally disregards his story and how he canonically looks like a child and that IS an important aspect#half foots face infantilism to an extreme and his appearance is a part of this. the discrimination he faces is partially BECAUSE of looks!#so changing him to erase such a HUGE important aspect of his race's lore just bc ppl seem uncomfortable with him being young looking feels#idk the feeling. its frustrating to me#i just wish there was some self reflection here. i guess. some actual acknowledgement of his canon struggles#do you even like chil if you cant accept one of his core canonical traits...#whew anyways this is HUGELY a limited edition post bc im deleting it as soon as my husband reads it ❤️#i hate drama i hate discourse so like always if you try to start shit i will ignore + block you soo fast dont try me

There are white people trying to either center themselves or decenter Black people whenever the CROWN Act is brought up.
“I have blue hair and was fired, isn’t that discrimination?” No Rebecca, you were told to dye it a natural hair color. Now if you want to argue your case, do it with HR. While you’re at it, help out Micah, she got fired for having dreads despite doing the same job you had better than you.
“My white son has long blonde hair and he’s made fun of”. I’m sorry, but was he told he couldn’t participate in sports or graduate because of it. No? Just teased?
“I have red, puffy hair, try having that for a few years.” And my hair is black and puffy as well. Has been since the day I was born. But the last time I checked you weren’t told to “make sure your hair is neat” in the most passive aggressive way throughout K-12 every time picture day showed up, and we still looked better than most of the other kids.
We all remember that Google search from 2016: professional vs unprofessional hair. And Black hair styles showing up as unprofessional.
Yeah, little Tommy with the long red hair is most definitely getting fired over his hair, not Jamal and Janice who both wear locks and twists and do a better job than Tommy.

Listen i talk a big talk about socrates being distracted by alcibiades but can i for a moment set the sence for a bit. In ancient athens there were two types of basic garments . The chiton which was basically an undergarment , not like underwear but the thing the wore underneath their main robes , basically it was a rectangual piece of fabric varying in lengths that they pinned and tied to kind of look like a tank top/dress . Then there was the himation which was basically this vibrant coloured blancket with accent difrent coloured stripes that they draped over themselves .
Now philosophers wore these discount versions of himations. Basically just less vibrant without all the details and the pazzaz . Now most of them still wore their chitons underneath . Not socrates . Socrates JUST wore the himation , nothing under it . The himation was big enough to cover his entire body so no one could really tell he wasnt wearing any underwear basically. BUT . There have been spesific instances of people saying that if the wind blew the fabric woukd rise up marlin monroe style and reveal his nudity underneath. SO SO SO . indulge in me for a bit . Indulge in the fact that most probably there has been a point in time when socrates clother blew in the wind and flashed alcibiades who in turn blushed like an embarrassed schoolboy

call me crazy but i think it should be illegal to say "you can't work here if you have tattoos". this includes "all tattoos must be fully covered while at work" btw. i think this should also go for dyed/"unnatural" hair colors.
