Hakata Issou 博多一双 is exactly what I imagined when I thought of Fukuoka's Hakata-style Tonkotsu pork bone based ramen: a potent and gelatinous milky soup, extra thin noodles, and a shop that smelled VERY ripe of boiling pork. I understand why there is always a line outside here; the vibe in the shop is wild with the staff endlessly moving the dank broth between a couple of giant pots. This ramen is a delicious punch with a little citrusy zest and the spicy pickled mustard greens on the counter finishes the umami balance rather nicely. 九州へ１

名古屋から九州へ。

新幹線で名古屋→博多に到着。

From Nagoya to the Kyushu region by Shinkansen.

First, I arrived Hakata in Fukuoka.

まずは、昼食に、博多ラーメンを食す。

Then, I ate Hakata ramen for lunch.

その後、電車を乗り継ぎ、太宰府天満宮。

After that, I changed the train and went to Dazaifu Tenmangu.

There is a shrine ahead of this.

学問の神様として、日本全国から人が集まる。

As a learning god, people gather from all over Japan.

神社でお参り後、通りのお店を散策して、バスで博多へ戻る。

After visiting the shrine, take a walk around the street shops and return to Hakata by bus.

そして、夕食はモツ鍋。

And I ate the motu nabe for the dinner.

もつの量も多く、締めのちゃんぽんは食べ放題。

OJT EATS | Hakata Ramen

A slightly more casual meal this week. Over the last few years or so, Bermondsey Street between London Bridge and Tower Bridge has become quite the foodie destination with a bunch of nice restaurants (including Cafe Murano and 2 Jose Pizarro restaurants!).  One of the places we’d been meaning to try was Hakata which, especially post pandemic, always seems to be packed!

I know it’s not the most exciting thing to order but we do like a bowl of edamame now and then.  We went for the salted rather than spicy version and what else can you say about them really?  They’re edamame beans!

Edamame does go well with a beer though and this was a particularly good beer.  Made by Orbit from leftover bread, it had a really strong toasty malted taste to it that I really liked.  I hadn’t heard of Orbit before this but may well be worth having a closer look at!

This was the chicken katsu sando.  Just before the pandemic, there was this big surge of katsu sandos around London.  I’m still waiting for that trend to come back nbut in the meantime, this wasn’t a bad one at all!  It’s a bit of a shame that they use normal mayo rather than Kewpie and the bread is more brioche-y than shokupan-y but I feel I am nitpicking here.  The katsu itself was juucy and crispy so all in all, pretty good!

We also ordered the soy garlic pokuribu which is just pork ribs if you had to write it out in katakana.  These had a slight batter to them so were a little crispy but underneath that batter, there was really tender and flavourful port.  These were my standout dish of the meal!

A quick shot of the 2 side by side to give you an idea of the size of the portions.  The ribs were a lot bigger than I’d expected!

Now onto the thing that attracted us to Hakata in the first place, the ramen.  The broth was really rich and meaty, the noodles just a little softer than al dente and smokey char siu pork on top.  All in all, a really tasty bowl of ramen.  The only thing I’d say is that it could’ve been a little saltier but again, nitpicking.  The garlic chips on top were especially good!

We really enjoyed our meal at Hakata.  It’s a bit of a shame (for us at least) that it’s so popular but we will definitely be heading back and trying to get a table!
