ROUND THREE
HATAKE KAKASHI vs HAKU
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reasons for submission under the cut
Kakashi
relatable as an adult
he is just an overworked guy who was told to watch some kids w LOTS of issues
needs therapy
good presence and guidance in Narutos life
interesting
cares about and is dedicated to his students very much
he is just cool
he is trying his best despite what he has been through in the past
is up for having fun but still knows when to be serious
was a narcissistic shit but grew out of it
has good intentions
sexy
wonderfully complex and well developed character
incredibly resilient and supportive
a sad and deeply broken man
always willing to give his life to protect them and his other precious people
just wanted everything to be ok for once in his life
hated Danzo
his friendship with Gai is adorable
the way he teases Tenzo is fun
he’s known as cool and aloof but in reality he’s a huge dork
Gai would want him to win
Haku
cried when he died
a quote about Haku: "He was a pure spirit – as true and clean as a newly fallen snow."
he really manages to leave a long lasting impression
gender non-conforming/androgynous
he is SO memorable because he's part of the first real antagonists of the Naruto series. There's a good reason why the Wave arc is so beloved and is rarely skipped in rewrite fanfics of the series, and part of that magic is Haku
incredibly strong and intelligent
good at healing and using needles in long-ranged combat
Haku is very loyal to Zabuza
he is so dedicated that he was willing to die for Zabuza, not realizing that Zabuza saw Haku as one of his loved ones and not just a tool
was the perfect enemy for Naruto and Sasuke to face because they were kind under it all
Haku helped awaken Sasuke's sharingan and Naruto's tailed beast chakra by serving as a life-threatening challenge
ultimately too soft to kill Naruto or Sasuke and just puts Sasuke to sleep with a needle technique
Naruto realizes that Haku is not so different from him, being an orphan that clings to the one precious person that helped them not feel so alone
gave weight to what it means to be a ninja in this world to Team Seven

I believe no arc of Naruto or Naruto Shippuden hits as hard as the arc of the Land of the Waves, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, but it's true.
It sets the tone of the entire story flawlessly. The whole Naruto thesis condensed on one mission.
The way it speaks so early and in so raw terms how unfair and corrupted the world of Naruto is. The first big mission of Team 7 is fully political. Go protect this man responsible for building a bridge that will bring prosperity to his land, what could ever go wrong?
⠀⠀⠀
It slaps the hell out of Team 7.
Here, see a tiny land ruled by crime and poverty. Do you want to speak about injustice?
Let's talk about heroes that end up in public execution and kids that are let to drown by their bullies and men who has to lie because they can't pay proper protection even if their job is crucial. Let's talk about kids begging for food in the street and single mothers that could get assassinated any day now and let's see what a prodigy with a blessed kekkei genkai has to tell you about how the world treats them out there. Let's see survival and bonds without white and black morals 'cause the definition of "crime" is vast and a criminal can be anyone. Let's see atonement that came too late and loyalty among bastards and compassion and the beauty of sacrifice.
Go see how your sensei almost dies and your teammates almost die and go see the enemy die to realize it doesn't fulfill you at all because the real enemy was a man with power controlling desperate people. And he, the real villain, was just sitting all along, waiting for you all to kill each other so he could later come and collect his gain.
There's a good reason why Naruto finds his resolve there. It's his manifest, his point zero.
Haku and Zabuza dead side by side while it snows is an image I could never erase from my brain. Zabuza's words are forever imprinted in my heart.

The Land of the Waves arc is a really interesting one, especially with Haku's character in particular. Haku's arc begins as a heavily parallel to Sasuke's; from the kekkei genkai and the hatred they've faced from it, the inherent loneliness and isolation throughout their entire lives, their loyalty, and regards for having someone special in their life. For Haku it's Zabuza and for Sasuke it's Sakura and Naruto. Although it's more impartial to Naruto due to the whole best friend thing that Itachi told Sasuke with awakening the mangekyou sharingan.
Even during their fight Zabuza makes a comment to Kakashi that's akin to letting their students fight without interruption and their ways of fighting and approaching one are almost identical. Once Haku's died Sasuke is the first one to realise how Haku purposefully kept Sasuke alive and ensured not to hit is vital points; despite the amount of damage he inflicted and how he promised Zabuza ,the man he loves and trusts the most, that he would kill him.
Both parties' isolation is probably the most clear example of a parallel because of how similar, yet different, it is. Sasuke's experiences isolation post massacre mostly and is a family oriented character. His driving force in the series is to get revenge on the man who caused his parents' death and to ensure closure from it. He makes close relationships with those around him at first only to break them in favour of his journey to power so he's able to rival Itachi's. However, Haku's isolation began from birth. Because of the kekkai genkai discrimination faced in his home village he was separated from everyone else. Even his mother forbid him for showing any signs of it for his own saftey due to his father. Haku's lonliness comes to a halt when he meets Zabuza. Even if he knows he'll only be used as a tool ( as Zabuza himself says even if he's disgusing his protective feelings of Haku) he puts his loyalty into the man's hands. He loves him with everyone bone in his body just like Sasuke did with his own family. Their isolative lives happened in opposing ways.
All of this just for Naruto to be pushed as the one who understands Haku the most. Every person in the series who is relateable more to Sasuke ( gaara, neji, haku) becomes mote aligned with naruto..sasuke uchiha i'm so sorry you got framed as a villain despite your higher compatibility with every broken character that naruto ends up 'saving'
