It Lies Beneath These Hallowed Woods
by meekome (@meekkome)
M, WIP, 10k, Wangxian
Summary: The shadows are alive. Writhing and twisting around him, creeping over him, between his fingers, around his throat, curious and hungry. The dirt beneath is black like dried blood, which makes the shards and fragments of bones half-buried around him easy to see, white and glimmering unnaturally bright in the gloom. Then something looks at him, from behind the shadows, and Wei Wuxian flinches at the weight of its attention. “Who are you?” Wei Wuxian says, voice echoing strangely as the silence stretches and the resentment nips at his skin, held back by this thing he cannot see. You do not have a name for what I am, it finally says. Wei Wuxian sucks in a slow breath. “What are you, then?” The trees bend and snap in a sudden breeze and the ghosts around him spin and whine, and Wei Wuxian is horrified to realize it is laughing. Shall I let you see, little cultivator? Doing so has driven more humans mad than the number of bones that sleep beneath your feet. But Wei Wuxian has never been good at ignoring knowledge, no matter the consequences, and he does not look away. Kay's comments: I know Halloween is already over, but it's still spooky season in my heart, so this story is very fitting. In which, not only are the Burial Mounds sentient and changing Wei Ying even more than they did in canon, but also! Lan Wangji follows him into the Burial Mounds after he heard that the Wens have thrown him in there and he communicates!! Love that for Wangxian and I can't wait to see how this story concludes.
pov alternating, canon divergence, sentient burial mounds, eldritch wei wuxian, monster wei wuxian, body horror, angst with a happy ending, wei wuxian's three months in the burial mounds, fix-it, yiling laozu wei wuxian, yiling laozu lan wangji, love confessions, friends to lovers, developing relationship, sunshot campaign, communication, married lan wangji/wei wuxian

Angels not being created but having evolved that way has some very interesting implications as to their physiology and biology. For instance, supernumerary eyes on the wings. Wings having eye designs is a trait usually found in prey animals, as a way to scare off predators, which begs the question what the fuck could be an Angel’s natural predator
Personally, I think they evolved in a higher stress ecosystem, which is why they are so awe inspiring in humans, while still being near the bottom of their respective food chain

Legends and myths about trees
Legendary tree deities (22)
Hyldemoer – 'the Elder Mother’, the guardian of the elder trees
“If you stand beneath an elder tree on midsummer eve you will see the King of the faeries and his entourage but be careful that you do not get swept away to faerieland.
The tree and the wood is greatly prized by the fae folk, so it must not be used to make mundane household objects, especially not a cradle or the baby will be pinched black and blue.
Do burn the wood or bring it into the house as this is very unlucky and will bring the devil in.
The Elder Mother guards the tree and although she is usually kind she can become dangerous, if her trees are harmed so you must always ask permission before cutting an elder tree.
To cut elder wood you must say, three times, ‘Elder Mother, please give me some wood, and I’ll give you some of mine when I grow into a tree (Ourd gal, give me some of thy wood, an oi will give some of moine, when oi grows inter a tree)’.”
Faeries and Folklore from the British Isles
The Elder Mother is thought to be the guardian of the elder trees, and it was said, until recent times in various parts of England and Scandinavia that to take wood from the elder tree one would have to ask the Elder Mother first, or else ill luck would befall the woodsman. The spirit is said to haunt or torment people who build from elder wood unless they ask permission first.
In Denmark, the Hyldemoer (“Elder-mother”) or Hyldequinde (“Elder-woman”) is a spirit like a wood-nymph or dryad that lives in the elder tree.
Other similar and related beliefs have been handed down in various cultures.
In Denmark, an elder twig put in the mouth was traditionally thought to drive out evil spirits and thus could cure toothache. Also in Denmark, on Midsummer's Eve, if you were to stand under an elder, you could see the Elf-king and his host. A similar tradition existed in Scotland where it was said to happen on All Hallows or Samhain.
In England, it was thought that the elder tree could never be hit by lightning and that carrying the twigs of an elder could protect their bearer from rheumatism. Farmers used to protect their animals from evil by placing a cross made from elder on their cow-sheds and barns.
In some Slavic countries, such as Russia, it is thought that the tree had the power to ward off evil. In Sicily, it was claimed to have the power to ward off snakes, and so on.
Every summer, our neighbourhood had an elder hedge with divine, full blossoms, but it was completely cut down to develop a residential site. These days, they spray the stumps with powerful chemicals to prevent regrowth.

Ever heard of the TTRPG called Babes In The Wood by Adam Vass? It’s based off Over the Garden Wall and I’m starting it as my first table top campaign.
I’ve so excited to start and introduce my players to stories inspired by macabre fairy tales I heard as a child.
Also I just love spooky stuff in general as well as twists on moral tales.
I might share some of my unique Hallows as they call your different towns/locations in this game after the campaign. One of my players follows me on here so no spoilers for you 😆
I’ve gone so in-depth with this I’ve been making whole playlists and even drawings of some vital NPCs. Creating a world for others to explore really is just awesome in general. I feel like I’m getting a great chance to express myself.
Also as a first time DM, would appreciate any tips

All Hallows - Goblin Woods
Our next area of the All Hallows map celebrates an aspect of Halloween that goes right back to the holiday's ultimate origins but is nowadays remembered only in bits and pieces—Celtic legends and lore surrounding the mystical time of Samhain, and the fairy tales that emerged from those underpinnings. Not only goblins but banshees, witches, and all manner of beings from a dark enchanted forest may be found here.
The entrance to Goblin Woods lies along a winding path that begins among the buildings of the entry plaza. The town-style buildings of the plaza transition to derelict rural structures and then the trees of a dense Old World forest, until guests arrive at an archway formed out of two bare trees whose branches curl overhead and merge into each other. The name of the area is picked out in fiber optic lights that intermittently turn on with a “fairy dust” effect...but, crucially, fragments of the lettering are scattered across the twigs and the words are only legible from certain angles. (The sweet spots are marked by rings of circular tiles of varying sizes set into the ground, colored red with white spots. Knowledgeable guests might feel uneasy about this.)
The archway opens onto a clearing in the forest in which is a tiny village right out of a Brothers Grimm storybook. Shops and eateries occupy thatched-roof cottages, and a music loop of eerie, “mystical” instrumentals and fairytale-inspired pieces fades in and out. Further paths lead off of this area through densely wooded spaces, arriving at the area attractions.

Characters
Goblin Woods is not as heavily populated with themed characters as, say, Ghoul City, but it's not unusual to encounter goblins, trolls, and other unsavory creatures from fairy tales scuttling about the area. There are also a handful of major characters, though as is the case with most fairy tales, they have no names, only descriptive titles. They may be found roaming almost anywhere in the area, including the labyrinth.
The Witch of the Woods: Is the crone in the black cloak kindly or wicked? If approached, will she accommodate your request for selfies or visit you with a fearsome curse (or both)?
The Green Men: These giants made of twisted branches and leaves (stilt-walking performers) wander the back ways of the forest, and no one knows how many there really are or what their purpose is. Just be careful what you lean against...
The Fairy Queen: Highest lady of the Unseelie Court, beautiful, graceful, and mysterious. Offer her no gifts, and accept none from her.
Attractions
The Tale of Tam Lin: A dark ride following the story of Tam Lin, from Bonnie Janet's first meeting with the mysterious young man in Carterhaugh Forest to her daring rescue of him from the Fair Folk on Halloween night itself!
2. Wild Hunt: A suspended roller coaster based on the pan-European myth of ghostly skyborne riders that chase down unlucky wanderers in the forest.
3. Puck's Labyrinth: The maze attraction of Goblin Woods takes the form of a disorienting journey through the deep woods and fairy mounds. It's a wide-ranging maze that affords glimpses of the other area attractions via gaps in the foliage as well as giant spider webs, glowing mushrooms, sinister trees, and other sights of the haunted forest.
4. Fae Circle Dance: A simple carnival spinner with a literal twist—the suspended cars move along a series of interwoven tracks, and the patterns can be quite unpredictable.
Shops and Eateries
5. Glamours: The Goblin Woods costume shop focuses on motifs of fairy tale, fantasy, and days of yore. Some of the offerings include: general medieval and Renaissance looks, dragons, fairies, knights, mermaids, royalty, unicorns, walking trees, witches, and wizards.
6. Goblin Market: A toy, book and curio shop for lovers of fantasy and fairy tales, especially if their tastes run a little to the dark.
7. Gingerbread Cottage: A combination candy shop and bakery/tea shop, perfect for taking a break during the day or evenings. Be sure to ask about special fairytale-inspired tea blends and “soul cake” pastries!
8. Morgan's Cauldron: A small counter-service eatery with a menu of simple meals—soups, sandwiches, fresh fruit and cheese platters, and the like.
9. The Witch's Hut: Located toward the back of Goblin Woods rather than in the “village” area with the other shops, the Witch's Hut is a tiny metaphysical shop selling crystals, Tarot cards, mystical jewelry, and other accoutrements. It's a good place to run into the Witch of the Woods.
