You had spent hours carving your pumpkin. Almost two days in total. Carefully cutting the pattern. No one had been able to pull you away all day. There was a pumpkin competition that you wanted to enter. Every house in the street was entering.
Pietro had helped you for a while but he’d gotten bored. When your pumpkin started to slump on one side, Vision got down on his hands and knees to calculate how you would have to carve to keep it from falling apart. At one point it did slump down and Wanda put it back together, giving the pumpkin a few structural internal supports which sprouted from the centre of the pumpkin. Once you were satisfied you went out to put it on the curb. You added a few paper bats and ghosts on sticks, digging them into the dirt and positioning them so that they looked like they were flying around the pumpkin.
Everyone was dressed up and ready for the Halloween street party after the pumpkin contest. Wanda had made the costumes, though you hadn’t seen her make them yourself. But you had been incredibly occupied by your grand pumpkin design.
“They’re nearly here!” You hissed as you spotted the inspector for the pumpkin competition. You hurried inside and everyone joined you as you peeked out of the window. You saw your Wanda’s neighbour hurry out of his house and stop to look at your pumpkin. Then he viciously stomped on it before hurrying back.
“He stepped on my pumpkin!” You complained.
“Stepped on it. He murdered it!” Pietro commented. You turned to look at Wanda who waited for the neighbour to go in before fixing the pumpkin. The Inspector was still occupied and you saw the neighbour looking out of his window and frowning.
“He’s going in for another kill!” Vision gasped.
“Don’t worry. I’ve got it.” Wanda waved her hands and you wall watched as the neighbour went to open his door. It did at first but then it slammed shut. He tried several more times to open the door but each time it slammed shut. He vanished from view and returned, jamming a chair in the doorway and climbing over.
“He’s dedicated!” Wanda gasped.
“All this over a pumpkin.” You said with disappointment, resigned yourself to having a destroyed pumpkin.
“I’m on it.” Pietro muttered. You glanced at Wanda whose eyes went wide and she hurried out of the house after him. The pumpkins outside your neighbours house started smooshing themselves as you stood watching from teh window with Vision.
“Excuse me ma’am.” Someone said to Wanda.
“Oh no! They’ve been caught!” Vision said dramatically as the two of you dropped down. Both peeking over the very edge of the windowsill.
“She’ll have to use her powers to get out of it!” You gasped. You both watched as Wanda turned.
“Oh. Me? Hi!” Wanda said with a nervous laugh to her voice.
“I’m sorry but no one is allowed out while the pumpkins are inspected, not if your house is taking part in the pumpkin contest. It was on the form you signed.” The inspector said.
“I am so sorry, my brother and I were looking for… for our… dog! Yes. We have a dog and our dog got out and I was so worried about him getting at the pumpkins and ruining the contest I just had to try and catch him… PIETRO! Did you find the dog?” Wanda called and gestured in Pietro’s direction. There was a red puff around Pietro and he was stopped, with a small dog in his hands.
“A misdirection. She’s going to be ok!” Vision said with a similar energy as he had before. You both squealed nervously as Wanda continued to explain. They were shooed back into the house and they joined you at the window.
“That was so stressful.” You gasped as Pietro handed you the dog.
“Yes, well. That nasty neighbour is about to come out.” Wanda said. You all ducked down as the neighbour came out and then started shouting. He was asked by the inspector to go back inside but when he refused he was given a blue ticket.
“What does a blue ticket mean?” Vision asked.
“Disqualification.” You muttered.
“Well he did squish your pumpkin and he might have been the one doing it all the other years. He does usually win.” Pietro commented. Everyone stayed quietly by the window and waited for the inspector to finish.
“A gold flag! What does that mean?” Wanda said with excitement.
“It means we won!” You said with excitement. Wanda squealed with excitement and suddenly streamers were popping overhead. You laughed as Pietro and Vision cheered for you.

“I’ve got you! I’ve got you!” You heard Wanda call. You felt yourself stop hurtling to the ground with a gentle warm feeling. Red light surrounded you. It was an odd sensation. As if Wanda had wrapped one of the blankets from her bed around you. The power seemed to have a smell that was familiarly Wanda.
“Move!” You heard Natasha shout. You came lower to the ground and everything began to become blurry. Wanda’s powers eased from around and for a moment you didn’t feel anything. Until the pain split through you. When you began to scream you realised that you couldn’t contain the sound. Your eyes watered and something dug at your side.
“One of the darts appears to have impaled them. We may not be able to evacuate.” Vision said from somewhere near you. You couldn’t focus on anything in particular as you writhed.
“Wanda, your power stopped the pain… maybe that will help again. I’ll get Fury to prepare a med bay.” Natasha’s voice now sounded low, wobbly as if she was speaking but from under water.
“Right. (Y/N). I’m going to try and help but you need to try not to fight me.” Wanda explained. You were surrounded again. The pain seeped away and your vision cleared again. Trying to move your hand over the wound you focused. If you could just move the dart with the magic that you’d learned from Strange you could help the team heal you. Nothing happened. Try as hard as you might. You heard people coming close again but stayed focused. Until the strain tired you too much and you fell back in a slumped position on the floor. Wanda lifted you onto a stretcher and waited until Dr. Cho had looked you over.
“What happened? Did (Y/N) get the dart out? We found another dart and we’re starting to run a tox screen.” Natasha said as she hurried over to Wanda and Vision.
“I don’t think we’re dealing with chemicals.” Wanda said sombrely. Natasha frowned at her and she glanced at Vision who looked rather worried. “They’re embarrassed about their spells not working anymore.”
“I have seen (Y/N) move spaceships and multiple busses full of people at the same time, with enough control to save those people. We watched them try and nothing happened.” Vision said carefully.
“I can go to Strange. He can come to the Avengers compound and see. Perhaps it was just my powers mixing things up.” Wanda said quickly. Natasha frowned. She didn’t like the strain in Wanda’s voice.
“No. I’ll go with Vision. You should stay close to (Y/N). Your powers seemed to ease things. Maybe Helen will need you.” Natasha insisted. Wanda nodded and hurried off. Vision watched her go into the sky and looked back at Natasha.
“Do we know who attacked?” Vision asked her.
“No. We don’t even know where the hell they attacked from. They came through some sort of portal when they attacked (Y/N). That second dart would have hit Wanda if she hadn’t dropped down to catch (Y/N). I have some questions for Strange.” Natasha snapped as she led the way to a vehicle.
