Memory Monday--falling short
Good memory Monday morning to you. Our theme is “Proclaiming Christ”; our topic is “all have sinned”; and the verse for this month is Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. Last week we considered the universal human condition that we have all sinned. But not only have we sinned, past tense, will continue to sin, present tense. The phrase fall short “is in the present tense, indicating continuing action.” (Ryrie) “It can be translated “keep on falling short.” (BKC). So even if we think we are a good person who has overcome a sinful past we still “fall short of the glory of God”. This can be seen when we define the term sin. The Greek term used here is hamartanō and the basic idea is to miss or wander from the path of uprightness and honor, to do or go wrong. Strong’s says it means “to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize).” All of us at some point in our lives and continually every day miss the mark of God’s standard, which is perfection. Even the best person is still not perfect. This truth must be proclaimed so that people see their need for salvation and then they/we can share in the prize of righteousness won by Jesus Christ.
