Top Anime of 2021

Sequels and things I haven’t finished won’t be included. Mairimashita Iruma-kun (S2), Zombieland Saga: Revenge, and Hamefura (S2) were amazing sequels that should be watched.

Disappointments:

Sonny Boy

This felt like a fever dream that wasn’t even worth it. It was stylistically fun, but from every single perspective, I just don’t understand what it was trying to go for or its point. I get feeling lost in high school, but that’s how you guys go about it? I don’t know, it was an interesting premise, but I couldn’t grow to like any of the characters at all.

Hmm... the animation was good. Besides that, everyone knows this anime was hot garbage and a disappointment to all.

Kaizoku Shoujo

Crunchyroll Originals are just not doing great. This had a good first episode then progressively got worse until the final episode which actually offended me, my intelligence (where there wasn’t much), and my time. Thanks for wasting my time. The romance could’ve been better, the premise was good and could’ve been worked on better, the characters could’ve been fleshed out better, there were so many missed shots that were just so painful to endure because you know the starting material looked great.

Good/Okay anime; Bad Adaptations:

Horimiya

Imagine trying to condense almost 120+ chapters into 12 episodes. Oh wait. They did. Yeah, it sped through during the second half and actually included scenes that I would’ve dropped out. Okay, maybe it’s just the one that got everyone on Twitter to call Hori homophobic (which I don’t fully agree with in the first place), so I really think that dropping it would’ve been for the best since it didn’t actually add anything to her character and was there for comedic value which I didn’t find funny which was the point of the scene. I digress. Just read the manga for more substance and cute moments.

Tokyo Revengers

Until the last arc, I thought Tokyo Revengers was amazing as a manga. It was a mediocre anime. That’s all. The manga drags on, so the segment about the anime shouldn’t.

I guess they were okay...

Kyuuketsuki Sugu Shinu

This anime was mediocre, but I needed something for this spot. Honestly, it started out funny then dragged on. The art wasn’t great, but it was funny. John is the best character.

Vanitas no Carte

For all the stuff I say about Vanitas, it was okay. The art was great, and I like the aesthetic, but I would still punt and kick Vanitas given the chance.

Uramichi Oniisan

Same problems with number 10 except I related, and it stayed funnier for longer. The art was bad, but that’s because the entire budget went to the voice actors. Every single named character was voiced by a really popular voice actor. The casting was insane.

Top Six

6. Komi-san wa, Comyushou desu

Despite how often I trash-talk this anime, it was actually good and entertaining. It just didn’t live up to the hype/bar that was set. The art was good, the story was good (even with the qualms I have), the characters... they exist, and I really relate to some of the things that come up.

5. Senpai ga Uzai Kouhai no Hanashi

I nearly skipped on this anime because I thought it looked stupid, but this anime was so good. It was so funny, so cute, and it was a romance that doesn’t take place in high school. I really like that.

4. SK8

This anime just hit a lot of good points with me, and I really liked it. I like the characters, I liked the story (and I don’t even like sports anime!), and I liked the art. I would recommend it to anyone.

(Note: I can’t really say whether the order of 1-3 is right. I chose this order on a whim.

3. Link Click

While technically a donghua, I’m including it on the list. This show was amazing. It had me on the edge of my seat, and I am waiting for the next season. Maybe I arbitrarily put it on the 3rd spot because I’m salty about the next season not being out yet.

2. Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song

I skipped this until hearing how good the animation was, and this really sold me on how great of a voice actress Atsumi Tanezaki is. The music, animation, voice acting, story, execution, everything was amazing!

1. Oddtaxi

Oh man, this anime lives up to the hype, and as much as I’m adverse to furry anime, this is not a furry anime! The animal component has nothing to do with the story! Watch Oddtaxi! It’s so detail-focused, riveting, and I had such a fun time binge-watching it. Who knew that madness from gacha games could be an interesting subplot? The style and aesthetic fits just right.

The Gang's All Here in My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Otome Game PV

  A new key visual and a new preview video (below) have been published for My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! ~The Pirate Who Summons Trouble~ (known in Japan as Otome Game no Hametsu Flag Shikanai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei Shiteshimatta... ~Haran wo Yobu Kaizoku~), an upcoming otome game based on the popular light novel series written by Satoru Yamaguchi and illustrated by Nami Hidaka about a cheerful but not terribly bright young lady who ends up reincarnated in the bad girl role of her favorite fantasy dating simulator.

    My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! ~The Pirate Who Summons Trouble~ will be published in Japan by Idea Factory under their Otomate label. The game features an original story that is set after Catarina clears her "doom flags" and successfully passes the "Graduation Ceremony" event without being murdered or exiled. In the game, Catarina encounters new dangers in the form of Silva, a handsome pirate captain.

    My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! ~The Pirate Who Summons Trouble~ is scheduled to be published in Japan for the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Switch Lite on December 23, 2021. The regular and digital versions of the game retail for 7150 yen (about $65 US) including tax, while the limited edition version retails for 9350 yen (about $85 US) including tax.

  The second season of the My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! TV anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.

Hamefura Pirates: Geordo Route Chapter 3 (Part 1)

A Brief Escape (Part 1)

Geordo's POV

Geordo remembers how Katarina has brought colors to his grey world.

Katarina's POV

When Katarina and Geordo are about to head back to the party venue, they feel a big vibration. Katarina loses her balance, and Geordo catches her before she falls.

Katarina wonders what has caused the vibration. Geordo doesn't know, but he doesn't think it is something minor. He asks Katarina to stay there while he goes to check the situation. Katarina refuses because she feels that she can't let anything happen to Geordo since he is a royal. They argue a little about who should be the one to check the situation.

Geordo suddenly turns his head towards the door, which is wide open. He has heard a commotion and other unusual sounds. He doesn't know anything about the situation, so leaving Katarina alone would actually be more dangerous. He finally agrees to let Katarina go with him. He also asks her not to separate from him.

Geordo and Katarina carefully move towards the party venue. Katarina wants to join the others fast. Looking around him, Geordo deduces that the vibration wasn't caused by a hole opening in the ship. It is "the other possibility."

Just before they reach the party venue, Geordo suddenly stops and asks Katarina to step back and stay quiet. Following Geordo's gaze, Katarina strains her eyes towards the end of the corridor. She can see nobles running about and screaming through the slight door opening. The nobles are chased by dangerous-looking people holding guns.

Geordo guesses that pirates are attacking the ship. Katarina is shocked upon hearing the word "pirates." From this situation, Geordo judges that they should probably leave the place. He takes Katarina's hand, and they start running.

While running, Katarina feels like she has heard the word "pirates" just recently. Then she finally remembers. In the dream she had just before the trip, Acchan read from the Fortune Lover fan book about a scene where the ship transporting Katarina during her exile was attacked by pirates and then sunk. Katarina panics, wondering if that doom end is unfolding at the moment.

Mental Meeting

The Katarinas are completely panicked.

Studious Katarina asserts that they have safely reached the friendship ending, which means there shouldn't be any more doom end awaiting them.

Happy Katarina deduces that this incident should not be related to the game then.

Shy Katarina still thinks that a pirate attack is a strange coincidence.

Fearless Katarina wonders if Katarina might not be doomed in the friendship ending too.

Studious Katarina thinks new doom flags have appeared because they have changed the course of the game.

Fearless Katarina thinks they should beat the pirates to avoid their doom.

Shy Katarina brings to attention that they are powerless against pirates since they have no weapon and can't use Earth Bump on a ship.

Happy Katarina thinks they should be able to manage since they have Geordo with them.

Studious Katarina reminds everyone that they are supposed to be doomed on Geordo's route, which means staying with him may be dangerous if the game is really unfolding. They should probably keep their distance from him as much as possible and stay with people unrelated to their doom.

Shy Katarina thinks they will meet a different doom end if they deal with the pirates alone.

Happy Katarina suggests they stay with Sophia and Mary and form a rival characters coalition.

After discussion, the Katarinas must decide whether to:

Choice 1: Keep their distance from Geordo as much as possible Choice 2: Stay with Sophia and Mary

Katarina's POV

Still running, Katarina remembers that everyone might be currently facing the pirates at the party venue. As she is shyly asking Geordo whether they can go back, he suddenly shouts at her to duck. Geordo pushes her down, and just after, she hears a gunfire and a vase shattering.

While Katarina recovers from the shock, a man looking like a pirate (Silva) walks over and aims a gun at them. The man grins since he has been searching for "the princey boy and the ducal missy." He advises them not to move: his gun is the real deal, and the shot earlier was a warning. He also adds that they can't get away from him since they're on a ship. Like this, Geordo and Katarina are taken back to the party venue.

There, Katarina meets back with her friends and is relieved to see they're alright. She overhears the pirates confirm that "the number of passengers matches".

Geordo asks everyone if they're injured. Alan confirms they're not. When Alan asks in turn about Katarina and him, Geordo replies they're not injured either since they had no opportunity to fight back with a gun aimed at them. Nicol is glad they're alright, but Alan is not surprised, given how the pirates have been acting. Geordo and Katarina are confused. Nicol explains that the pirates haven't hurt a single passenger, they've also made sure to disarm the security guards before fighting them back, and they'd rather fight barehanded despite carrying guns and swords. The pirates act as if they want to reduce casualties to a minimum.

Geordo notices that the Queedian nobles are nowhere in sight. Mary explains that they have been taken to a different location for some reason. Geordo doesn't understand why the pirates would separate the Sorcerian and Queedian nobles.

Katarina notices that the food on the buffet has been left untouched, and she feels sad about the waste. As she ponders whether she should try to eat them herself, Geordo stops her and cautions her to watch her moves since the pirates have their eyes on them. Katarina sadly reconsiders, hoping that the pirates will eat the food.

Alan feels uneasy about the situation since the Vinculum is considered a Sorcerian ship. If any Queedians were to lose their lives here, Sorcier would be held responsible. It would then become a diplomatic issue.

Silva orders his men to divide the Sorcierian nobles into small groups and put them in rooms. Hearing this, Katarina fears she might get separated from everyone and grasps Sophia and Maria's hands. Geordo and the others stand in front of them, glaring at the pirates.

Silva approaches them. Geordo glaringly asks him what he is planning to do to them. Silva replies that he will just have them be quiet in rooms. The two royals, the prime minister's family, high-ranking nobles' daughters and sons, and the Wielder of Light will be kept together since they're valuable hostages. Upon hearing "Wielder of Light," Maria shrieks, and her shoulders tremble. Katarina wonders if the pirates might be targetting Maria, so she protectively stands in front of her and glares at Silva menacingly.

Silva seems well-informed about them, so Geordo figures that he didn't randomly attack their ship. He asks him who he is. Silva introduces himself: he is the captain of the Weiss Pirates, and he is known as "the White Darkness Devil." His eyes are shining purple. Geordo and Katarina are surprised by his identity, while the nobles are completely panicked. After all, the rumor says anyone who sees his eyes won't see them twice.

Silva reminds everyone that they can't get away from him since they're on a ship. Then Katarina and the others are taken away.

Regarding Geordo's bad end, here it is.

Geordo and Silva are fighting, and the moment Silva charges, Katarina jumps in front of him and gets stabbed.

Geordo: KATARINA!

Silva: Why did you jump in front of me?!

Geordo catches Katarina as she is falling down.

Geordo: How dared you do this to Katarina?!

Silva: Wait, it wasn't my intention...

Geordo: I won't forgive you.

Then Geordo uses his magic. Note that it is a big deal. Royals must not use their magic carelessly and Geordo has always been careful to abide to this rule.

Everything is burning around them.

Katarina feels her body getting cold and regrets that she couldn't live a long life this time either.

She dies while hearing Geordo desperately calling her name.

Scene Chapter: Geordo Route, Chapter 2

Context:  During the party on the second day, Katarina goes out for a bit to clean her dress in the bathroom after spilling some drinks on it. But after she is done, she can't remember the way back to the venue.

Hamefura Pirates: Geordo Pool Event

All of the summaries I have written so far are available in the Hamefura Pirates Summary Index.

Context: Katarina is a the pool with her friends and has decided to inflate a swim ring.

Katarina knows how to swim since she has learned it at school in her past life, but she still prefers to use a swim ring just in case, since it will be her first time at the pool in this life.

Katarina tries to inflate the swim ring by blowing into it, but she has trouble doing so. Seeing her struggling, Mary and Keith offer their help, but Katarina is so absorbed that she doesn't hear them. Mary figures that she will go search for an inflating tool. Keith goes with her since he is worried about Mary walking around in a swimsuit alone.

After Mary and Keith have left, Geordo comes out and offers Katarina his help. Since Katarina is so absorbed that she doesn't hear him, he embraces her shoulders. It works, and Katarina realizes that Geordo is here. With a sparkling smile, Geordo proposes to Katarina to inflate her swim ring. Katarina gladly accepts since she felt like she would run out of air.

Geordo easily inflates the swim ring. Katarina is impressed since she could hardly do it despite the high stamina she got from farming.

After Geordo has finished inflating the swim ring, Katarina happily puts it on. 

At that moment, Mary and Keith return. They apologize since they were not able to find an inflating tool, then notice that the swim ring is all inflated.

Katarina happily explains that Geordo has inflated it for her. From this, Mary is shocked and asks if Geordo has indirectly kissed Katarina.

Geordo smugly answers that he just couldn't leave his fiancée in trouble. Besides,he and Katarina will be married in the future, so an indirect kiss is no problem. And finally, he insists that Katarina is happy with what he did.

Mary retorts that Katarina is happy over the swim ring, not the indirect kiss. Keith notes that Katarina didn't realize the indirect kiss, so she is still not conscious of Geordo.

Hamefura Pirates: Geordo Route End Of Chapter 2

After going to the bathroom, Katarina can't find her way back to the party venue. She wanders about until she reaches the library.

Geordo suddenly calls out to her. Katarina is surprised to see him, so he explains that he set off in search of her since she didn't seem to come back. Katarina apologizes.

Since the library is nearby, Geordo invites Katarina to go there together. He explains that he has wanted to experience the atmosphere of the library at night. Katarina is curious about it, but also a bit reluctant since she doesn't want to worry the others. Geordo assures her that it is fine since he notified them that he would go search for her. Besides, he has also wanted to talk with her since they rarely get to be alone together. He also adds that he will leave the door open, so she can rest easy. Katarina is confused about the last part, but she grows more and more curious about the library at night. She feels like it might be her unique chance to see it since Keith might not let her wander alone at night. So she ends up accepting.

Geordo and Katarina both enter the library. Katarina takes in the dim and calm atmosphere. Geordo pulls out a chair and invites her to sit with him at the table on the back. His gentlemanly gesture reminds Katarina of how he gentlemanly escorted Maria in the game, and she feels nostalgic about it. She also remembers how she died after playing all night trying to conquer Geordo. 

Geordo is making a wide smile from across the table. She would have found his smile charming before, but now it looks somewhat blackhearted.

Geordo tells Katarina that he is very happy to finally have some alone time with her. After all, he has met quite a lot of interference ever since they boarded the ship, and they have never been alone together even at the academy. Katarina is confused about the "interference" part, but she agrees that it has been a while since she has been alone with Geordo. The whole gang is always together and she has hardly spent time alone.

Katarina asks Geordo about his work today. Geordo suavely tells her that seeing her face makes all the fatigue from work go away. Looking at how Geordo can pull off a line like that without problem, Katarina realizes once again that he really is a capture target. But it is a shame that he delivered this line not to a lovely princess, but to a villainess.

Then Katarina remembers that her days as villainess are finally over, and she feels exuberant about it. Looking at her grinning, Geordo chuckles and asks her if something good happened to her. Katarina simply replies that she is glad that she can spend spring break with everyone. Geordo is also happy to be able to see her everyday during spring break. Then he asks her about her plans for tomorrow. Katarina replies that, with Mary and the others, they have planned to visit the places that they haven't seen yet. Geordo realizes that Mary has gotten ahead of him, so he asks Katarina if she has plans for tomorrow night after the party. He would like to spend some time with her again, and suggests that they go see the pool at night. Katarina is excited about the idea. Before she suggests inviting everyone, Geordo stops her and insists on going together, just the two of them. Katarina wonders why Geordo insists on not inviting everyone. She thinks to herself that Geordo probably wants to have the large pool to himself instead of sharing it with the others. Then Geordo tells Katarina that he doesn't mind going tonight either, and asks if she has anything planned after the party. But Katarina has already planned to have a pajama party with the girls after. Geordo realizes once again that Mary has gotten ahead of him.

After remembering about the pajama party, Katarina realizes that she will need snacks and drinks for the night. She wonders if she will be able to take some from the party.

As Katarina is enthusiastically talking about food, Geordo fondly tells her that she has looked particularly happy ever since she boarded the Vinculum. Katarina simply replies that it is because she doesn't need to worry about her doom anymore. Geordo is confused about the "doom" word, while Katarina is thinking to herself that she is glad to have survived, to have her friends with her, and to be able to spend her second year carefreely. She lets out that she is happy to have safely advanced to the second year, and Geordo chuckles, amused that she would look forward to being a second year so much.

Geordo asks Katarina if she will spend her second year the same way as her first year. After all, new students will enroll after spring break, and the atmosphere inside the academy might change. Hearing this, Katarina is excited about the future underclassmen and wonders how they will be like. She also looks forward to her doom-free second year, and she is set on doing everything she couldn't do during her first year. And since she doesn't need to worry anymore about Geordo killing her, she might become even better friends with him from now on. She looks at Geordo and realizes once again that he is very different from his game version.

As Katarina tries to imagine what her second year will be like, Geordo tells her that he is pretty sure that he won't get bored as long as he is with her. He also adds that he is looking forward to the after graduation more than his second year. Katarina is surprised that he is already thinking of what he will do after graduation, but Geordo assures her that a year will pass in the blink of an eye. Following this, Katarina remembers that her classmates have indeed been talking about their plans after graduation. Graduation has seemed far away to her since Nicol and the others have just graduated. Katarina wonders what their graduation will be like, and whether Alan and Geordo will hold a performance again. Geordo doesn't mind holding a performance with Alan if that's what she desires. 

Then he asks her about her plans after graduation. With this, Katarina finally remembers that she is supposed to marry Geordo after graduation.

Katarina has gone off with her life believing that Geordo would break off their engagement one day, so she has never been conscious of being his fiancée. Even now, she can't imagine herself marrying him. Katarina doesn't know what to tell Geordo and awkwardly asks him about his plans after graduation. Geordo simply replies that he will continue his work as always. Following this, Katarina remembers that, as a royal, Geordo is always busy with work. She also remembers how Mary keeps telling her about her lack of confidence regarding her abilities to fulfill the role of a prince's consort, even though she is the perfect lady. She also remembers how her mother would rather that she didn't marry someone and embarrass the family, and how her father has always let her do whatever she likes. Katarina doesn't want to get married right after graduation, and she is thinking hard about how to tell this to Geordo. 

Since she is panicking, Geordo makes a faint smile and tells her that they still have time. Geordo's smile looks so unsettling that Katarina feels a shiver.

Katarina wonders if Geordo is really fine with her. Her mother and Keith keep saying that she is unfit to be a royal, so it wouldn't seem strange if Geordo also felt that way. But to her surprise, he has never said this, even once. But she still thinks that Geordo might break off their engagement one day, and when that time comes, she fully intends to readily accept it.

After remembering that Maria might be feeling uneasy at the party, Katarina asks Geordo if they can go back. But at that moment, they hear an explosion.
