¡Oi!

A terrible realisation
I don’t think that Roger Allam and Oliver Ford Davies have ever been in anything together. At least, not sharing a scene or stage.
This is dreadful. They are two of the best Shakespearean actors around and are I believe both lovely people (at least, I know Oliver is because I’ve met him a few times in a work-related capacity; all reports suggest that Roger absolutely is too). Also they have... complimentary approaches to character. They both like taking complex characters and playing every single damn layer to a stunning and humanising degree. But while Roger takes those complex characters and mostly conveys power and strength and brilliance he also finds what is terribly, heartbreakingly lost and vulnerable in them, Oliver takes them and gives them a sweet and gentle manner and then finds that little, terrifying streak of startling viciousness. They’re both incredible and seeing them do that together? HALP.
Oliver’s already played King Lear, I note, and Roger needs to. So here is a suggested bit of fantasy casting (with bonus additional Endeavour and other joy):
Lear - Roger Allam
Gloucester - Oliver Ford Davies
Kent - Shaun Evans (younger than Kent usually is but I think this would be incredible; could use his real Scouse accent when being “Caius”)
Cordelia - Sheila Atim
Edgar - Jack Laskey (older than Edgar usually is but I think this would also work well)
The Fool - Hammed Animashaun
Fellow Shakespeare fans: if you aren’t familiar with the work of all six of these actors, trust me you need to be. The only one I haven’t seen do Shakespeare is Shaun Evans, but he’s so amazing in other ways that I 100% trust that he could do it v well.
I was trying to work out who I’d want as Edmund, the other two daughters, etc., and I ran out of Too Many Awesome Possibilities. That’ll do to be going on with anyway. :-)

The unexpected tragic death of Oliver’s mother, involving a pool, a television, and a garden gnome, places the now aged-out and deinstitutionalized Oliver into a difficult position.
