Henry (Hammerin' Hank) Aaron broke the major league record with his 715th career home run.
One example of the respect he had among his peers was the Dodger infielders shaking his hand as he rounded the bases.
Hank was a man of remarkable dignity and humility. For the last few years as he chased the record he received constant death threats.
And he never 'took' anything stronger than his chewing gum.

BOOK REVIEW: HENRY ARMSTRONG by John Jarrett (2023)
It's such a great book jacket on this new hardback from John Jarrett. Boxing's Super Champ, Henry Armstrong, is looking me right in the eye, but a browse rather than a bought is obviously the safest bet for this book reviewer, as you'll see next!
From Chapter 15; " Round Nine: Armstrong peered through his one good eye and started swinging as soon as they came together. The swift pace was telling on both, but they never ceased pounding. (Ceferino) Garcia's bolo punch started from the canvass, grazing Armstrong's chin with no damage. Armstrong was landing occasionally and missing more frequently. He cracked Garcia's jaw with a right and left, drove two rights to the body and took a right to the midsection in return. As in most other rounds, the Filipino was fighting off the ropes at the bell. Armstrong's round."
I certainly wouldn't have fancied any of THAT against THIS American!
So, a colourful and controversial career (and life) - including financial help from actress Mae West - is covered in full, with alcoholism awaiting "Homicide Hank" in the blue corner, and bible-bashing awaiting "Hammerin' Hank" in the red. Fortunately, although being aged 92, ex-Boxing News contributor, John Jarrett, is not punch drunk... nor for that matter, born again, only retaining a healthy zest for the sport he loves, in particular the 1930s and 1940s.
One ring, twenty-two chapters, 352 pages, in 1938, real name, Henry Jackson Jr, became the only boxer in history to hold the following ranks at the same time - Featherweight, Lightweight and Welterweight.
Quite an achievement - just like this very well-written book, which lives and relives some great boxing action.
Seconds out, 17 July, 2023, on PITCH.
Rating: 9/10

Rapper MC Hammer was a Bat Boy for the Oakland A's in the 1970s when he first got his nickname due to an uncanny resemblance to baseball legend "Hammerin" Hank Aaron. I bullshit you not.

It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.
Hammerin’ Hank made his #MLB debut 70 years ago today, going 0-for-5 in an Opening Day loss. Two decades later, the #Braves legend would rewrite baseball’s history books. ow.ly/s6hQ50Rflzu

Henry Louis Aaron (February 5, 1934 - January 22, 2021 ), nicknamed “Hammer” or “Hammerin’ Hank,” was a retired MLB right fielder who served as the SVP of the Atlanta Braves. He played 21 seasons for the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves in the NL and two seasons for the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League (1954-76). He held the MLB record for career home runs for 33 years, and he still holds several MLB offensive records. He hit 24 or more home runs every year from 1955 through 1973 and is one of only two players to hit 30 or more home runs in a season at least fifteen times. In 1999, The Sporting News ranked him fifth on its “100 Greatest Baseball Players” list.
He was born in Mobile to Herbert Aaron Sr. and Estella (Pritchett) Aaron. He had seven siblings. Tommie Aaron, one of his brothers, went on to play Major League Baseball. By the time he retired, he and his brother held the record for most career home runs by a pair of siblings (768). They were the first siblings to appear in a League Championship Series as teammates.
He hit his 755th and final home run on July 20, 1976, at Milwaukee County Stadium off Dick Drago of the California Angels, which stood as the MLB career home run record until it was broken in 2007 by Barry Bonds. Throughout his record-breaking 23-year career, he had a batting average of .305 with 163 hits a season, while hitting an average of just over 32 home runs a year and knocking home 99 runs batted in (RBIs) a year. He had 100+ RBIs in a season 15 times, including a record 13 in a row.
He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame during his first year of eligibility. He was inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame for his time spent with the Milwaukee Braves.
He married Barbara Lucas (1953-1971) and they had five children. He married Billye Suber Williams (1973-2021) and they had one child. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Hank Aaron (continue resting in peace), 18 years old at the train station in Mobile, Alabama, in 1952.
There is $1.50 in his pocket. In that bag by his foot are two changes of clothes. (And if his mama was anything like most other mamas in the South, probably some sandwiches and other snacks.)
He was on his way to Indiana to take a job. He was going to play baseball for the Indy Clowns of the Negro Leagues. Apparently, he was pretty good at it. A couple of years later, he was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers. He played for the Brewers for 2 seasons, then moved across town to the Braves, and later followed them to Atlanta. Eventually, he was the last Negro League player to be on a major league roster.
Even though the team has changed stadiums (twice) since then, his retired number, 44, still hangs on the outfield wall of the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium near where he belted a homer to break Babe Ruth's all-time record which he held for 33 years). He also served as the senior vice president of the Atlanta Braves.
Remembering "Hammerin' Hank" Aaron, who passed away on 22 January 2021.
