My Demon
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
My Demon (2023/24, South Korea)
Director: Kim Jang Han
Writer: Choi Ah Il
Mini-review:
Look, I'm not gonna lie. I started this drama for a very superficial reason: Kim Yoo Jung and Song Kang are one of the most gorgeous couples I've ever seen. And tbh, that's one of the things that kept me watching until the end. The first half was pretty fun, thanks to their will-they-won't-they dynamic and some really funny supporting characters and recurring gags. Unfortunately, it began to drag around the middle part, and then it got more and more boring with each passing episode. By the time the final episode came out, I no longer cared about the plot, the characters or anything else (although the ending itself was quite nice). With all that in mind, I can't help but think My Demon would have worked much better as a movie.

A non-romantic K-drama starter pack
If you're interested in K-dramas but don't know where to begin, and aren't interested in (or would like to take a break from) romantic storylines, then this is for you!
P.S.: Some of these dramas may contain romantic side plots that don't necessarily define the main storyline. List not sorted in any particular order, and only includes completed dramas.
Gifs not mine!
Stranger (2017; 2019)
A political crime thriller full of red herrings, "Stranger" (Season 1) follows an investigation into the murder of a man who has bribed countless officials from multiple levels and branches of government. Led by stoic prosecutor Hwang Shi Mok (Cho Seung Woo) and feisty detective Han Yeo Jin (Bae Doona), this well-paced, well-acted drama is full of twists and turns that will make you suspect everyone at some point.
Tumblr media
Kingdom (2019; 2020)
Historical political drama meets zombie thriller in the 2019 hit "Kingdom" (Season 1). The story follows Crown Prince Yi Chang (Ju Ji Hoon) as he investigates an outbreak of a mysterious plague that turns average citizens into rabid monsters while fighting to keep  his rightful place as heir to the throne. The hit series has led to a second season and a prequel TV movie "Ashin of the North" (2021).
Tumblr media
Signal (2016)
Featuring a mysterious walkie-talkie that links the past to the present, "Signal" is one of the most beloved police dramas of the last decade because of its refreshing take on the genre and the top-notch performances of its three leads: Kim Hye Soo, Lee Je Hoon, and Jo Jin Woong.
Tumblr media
The Uncanny Counter (2020)
"The Uncanny Counter" is a comedy-drama about four "counters", or grim reapers who have been lent superhuman abilities by a group of spirits. Their main job is to stop demons who possess violent criminals that become more powerful by consuming the souls of their victims. Funny, colorful, and action-packed, the show features wonderful performances from the main actors: Jo Byeong Gyu, Yoon Joon Sang, Kim Se Jeong, and (my personal favorite) Yeom Hye Ran. The hit series has been granted a second season.
Tumblr media
Racket Boys (2021)
If you need a feel-good drama that's not too heavy on the tears, crime, and lovey-dovey tropes, then this may be for you. "Racket Boys" is about an underdog middle school badminton team that dreams to make a mark on the national level and beyond. The rural setting and endearing ensemble cast, led by the talented Tang Jun Sang, allow for lighthearted moments but are never too cartoonish. A puppy love storyline exists between the leads, but it's very wholesome and innocent, and given far less importance than the struggle surrounding the national tournament.
Tumblr media
Squid Game (2021)
International smash hit "Squid Game" is about a mysterious organization that selects individuals with impossible debt to participate in a series of children's games to have a shot at winning 45.6 billion won. The catch: only the winner gets to live. Features an amazing ensemble cast led by Lee Jung Jae, Park Hae Soo, and impressive newcomer Jung Ho Yeon.
Tumblr media
Dear My Friends (2016)
A slice-of-life comedy drama featuring a stellar ensemble cast of the most accomplished Korean actors and actresses over 60, "Dear My Friends" follows 40-year-old writer Park Wan (Go Hyun Jung) as she chronicles the stories of her mother, her aunts, and their families. There are two romantic side stories here but the overall plot is more invested in how your friends can become your family especially after you reach a certain age. Think "Golden Girls" but in Korea. Praise-worthy acting from everyone involved, especially the main quintet: Na Moon Hee, Kim Hye Ja, Go Doo Shim, Park Won Sook, and Oscar winner Youn Yuh Jung.
Tumblr media
Live (2018)
"Live" is a slice-of-life, police procedural drama that tells the story of rookies and veterans at Hongil Station in Seoul, where there is no shortage of petty and violent crimes. The crimes featured examine the decisions that South Korean cops have to make especially in dangerous situations wherein the gray areas become even grayer. There are romantic storylines between the four leads but they never overshadow the cases. Wonderful acting, especially from Bae Sung Woo and Bae Jeong Ok who play the veterans Oh Yang Chon and Ahn Jang Mi, respectively. Also stars funny man Lee Kwang Soo and the angelic Jung Yu Mi (Train to Busan).
Tumblr media
Vincenzo (2021)
Born in South Korea, adopted into an Italian family, mafia lawyer Vincenzo Cassano (Song Joong Ki) flies back to Seoul after falling out with his adopted brother following the death of his boss/father-figure. His mission is to retrieve gold hidden beneath the dilapidated Geumga Plaza before it is ultimately demolished by the evil Babel Group that constantly harrasses its tennants to move out. Teaming up with the feisty lawyer Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Been, Vincenzo uses mafia tactics in his war against the conglomerate that thinks itself above the law. What sounds like a heavy premise is offset by the physical and witty comedy provided by the charismatic leads and supporting cast. There is romance between the leads (who share great chemistry nonetheless) but it is by no means the driving force of this story. They could have recasted this with two male leads as more of a bromance story and the outcome would be quite similar, but Jeon Yeo Been gives a unique, quirky flair to her character that makes her difficult to replace.
Tumblr media
Hyena (2020)
I know I said this wasn't a list for romantic K-Dramas but hear me out. There's romance but it's not what you think (the leads kiss a grand total of 3 times, twice in the first ep then once a little later). "Hyena" explores the world of corporate lawyers who serve the South Korean 1%. It's a dog-eat-dog world where the most conniving and least picky hyena reigns supreme. The hyena in question would be the brilliant renegade lawyer Jang Geum Ja (Kim Hye Soo). Sparks fly as she goes head to head with the by-the-book, elite lawyer Yoon Hee Jae (Ju Ji Hoon), whose ideals are constantly challenged as his world unravels around him.  The cases are challenging and the solutions that the leads come up with are intriguing. Romance doesn't drive this drama, but the chemistry between the leads is undeniable.

Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha. 8
Story: 8
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 9
Comparable to: When the Weather is Fine (kdrama) ; When the Camille Blooms (kdama) Thank You (kdrama)
This is a huge fan favorite among kdrama fans. I can see where it does deserve it’s title being on top in some points. The whole storyline really isn’t anything new to the romance genre, big uptown girl falls for hometown boy with a twist. It is executed flawlessly and what makes it more entertaining and worthy of its title is the whole ensemble of the cast. They turn the whole series into something special. Don’t get me wrong Im a big fan of both Shin Min Ah and Kim Seon Ho works too, it’s just that they were sort of meh for me sometimes, not so much in the beginning where they were perfect, but definitely in the middle and the later half. If it wasn’t for the rest of the cast i would’ve probably abandoned the drama unfortunately, which goes to show you it’s not always just about the main leads.

I've never read English fanfictions of K-Dramas before, but recently I watched Beyond Evil and it made me go digging AO3 right away. After reading several works, I wanted to write down a few thoughts and some information on names/titles as a native Korean speaker.
It sounds extremely weird when Joo Won calls Dong Sik "Dong Sik" or "Lee Dong Sik" in normal circumstances. In Korea, it is a taboo to call someone older than you by just their name. Whenever this happens in a fic, I can't help to think like, "Joo Won, are you trying to get punched by Dong Sik?! Why are you being so rude all of a sudden??" Of course, we saw that Joo Won calls Dong Sik "Lee Dong Sik" a couple of times in the show, but it was only when he was infuriated or really frustrated by Dong Sik.
Similarly, Yu Yeon would never call Dong Sik "Dong Sik." Maybe "Lee Dong Sik" if she is really mad, but I don't think she is someone who would ever act like that towards her older brother. She'll always call him "oppa (오빠)."
Whenever Dong Sik calls Joo Won "Joo Won" in a fic, my brain automatically translates it to "Joo Won-ah (주원아)" because that's just how you normally call someone younger than you by their name in Korean. In other words, Dong Sik wouldn't literally call Joo Won "Joo Won (주원)"; it'll always be "Joo Won-ah (주원아)." Basically, the rule is that you put "ah (아)" or "ya (야)" at the end of a name depending what it ends with; if a name ends with a consonant, you add "ah (아)," and if a vowel, "ya (야)." Therefore:
Joo Won (주원) -> Joo Won-ah (주원아)
Jae Yi (재이) -> Jae Yi-ya (재이야)
Ji Hoon (지훈) -> Ji Hoon-ah (지훈아)
Ji Hwa (지화) -> Ji Hwa-ya (지화야)
Yu Yeon (유연) -> Yu Yeon-ah (유연아)
You can't use a name + "ah (아)" or "ya (야)" as a subject or object in a sentence, as this convention only happens when you call someone. Because of this, the following sentence sounds awkward:
Dong Sik said, "My Joo Won-ah is such a handsome man."
Strictly speaking, "친구 (friends)" are people who have a bond and are the same age in Korea. That's why we can say Dong Sik, Jung Je and Ji Hwa are friends. Then what about others? At school or work, we can use "선배 (sunbae)" and "후배 (hoobae)." If you're familiar with Japanese terms "senpai" and "kouhai," they are exactly the same meaning. "Sunbae" is someone who is older than you and/or started school/career earlier than you. To your "sunbae," you're their "hoobae." In the show, Sang Yeop, Dong Sik's old partner, calls Dong Sik "sunbae."
However, if you become more intimate (not in a sexual way!) with someone, or if that someone is your family, other terms such as "형 (hyung)," "누나 (noona)," "오빠 (oppa)" and "언니 (unnie)" can be used as follows:
Younger male -> Older male = "형 (hyung)"
e.g. Ji Hoon -> Dong Sik
Younger male -> Older female = "누나 (noona)"
e.g. Ji Hoon -> Ji Hwa
Younger female -> Older male = "오빠 (oppa)"
e.g. Yu Yeon -> Dong Sik
Younger female -> older female = "언니 (unnie)"
e.g. Jae Yi -> Ji Hwa
Plus, you can add the person's name in front of each term. One thing to remember is that you should put "yi (이)" at the end of the name if it ends with a consonant. If it ends with a vowel, no extra syllable is necessary. For example:
Dong Sik (동식) -> Dong Sik-yi hyung (동식이 형)
Jae Yi (재이) -> Jae Yi noona (재이 누나)
Sometimes, you add "nim (님)" to "hyung (형)" and "noona (누나)" to be even more polite/show more respect. Therefore, "hyung (형)" becomes "hyung-nim (형님)," but for "noona (누나)," it becomes "noo-nim (누님)," not "noona-nim (누나님)." Once, Oh Sub refers to Nam Sang Bae "Sang Bae hyung-nim (상배 형님)" while talking to Jung Chul Moon after Nam Sang Bae was arrested. "Nim (님)" can be also added to a job title, so in the show we hear "소장님 (Substation Chief + nim)", "경사님 (Lieutenant + nim)," "경위님 (Inspector + nim)," etc. plenty times. Personally, it is funny to watch Dong Sik sometimes call Joo Won "한주원 경위 (Inspector Han Joo Won)" at the beginning and Joo Won sometimes call Dong Sik "이동식 경사 (Lieutenant Lee Dong Sik)" because technically you have to add "nim (님)" in those cases (you know, Joo Won being Dong Sik's superior officer at the time & Dong Sik being older than Joo Won and his "sunbae" in career), but they just want to show they don't like each other that much so bad!
Oh, and Dong Sik calls Joo Won "도련님 (young master)" from time to time, and it reminds me of Merlin calling Arthur "sire" sarcastically. Those young, elite, arrogant and (surprisingly) naive boys...
Anyway, now what I'm trying to figure out is--what would Dong Sik and Joo Won call each other once they start a romantic relationship? For Dong Sik, obviously it'd be either "주원아 (Joo Won/Joo Won-ah)" or "한주원 (Han Joo Won)." For Joo Won? As I've rambled long above, "동식아 (Dong Sik/Dong Sik-ah)" certainly is out of question. "동식 씨 (Dong Sik-ssi)" is slightly better, but it still sounds a little off to me. My personal picks are "이동식 씨 (Lee Dong Sik-ssi)" and "형 (hyung)." For the latter, I'd like to imagine that Joo Won asks Dong Sik if it's okay to call him that at some point. In bed, Joo Won might call Dong Sik "이동식 (Lee Dong Sik)" when he feels like to be a bit dominant or wants to tease/taunt Dong Sik, but not too often. (In one fic I've read, Joo Won says something like "Focus, Lee Dong Sik" while having sex with him and Dong Sik tries to be angry, saying "Yah--" but apparently he couldn't say much else after that. The fic is one of my favorites so far.)
Okay, that's all I guess. I've never written anything this long in English in my life, and honestly I'm a little nervous. Beyond Evil made me do this. I'm going to look for new fics now. (By the way, thank you for your amazing fics, Beyond Evil fic writers! Keep up the good work!)

~ Chapter 5. 02 ~
I apologize in advance for any spelling or grammar mistakes and how poorly written this fanfic is. English is not my first language and together with my dyslexia ass things can go wrong I'm sorry.
Tumblr media
I was walking further down the hall when I saw Miss Cha fall down on the ground while the guy with burn marks walked away.
"Miss Cha! Are you okay?!" I kneeled beside her while she cried into her hands.
"Did he do something to you?" She shook her head whipping the tears from her cheeks.
"No, no. I asked if he could take me outside." A frown came to my face.
Outside why would she want to go outside?
"It's too dangerous out there. You will get yourself killed." She shook her head standing up.
"I just want to hold her in my arms for the last time." It was the last thing she muttered before walking away from me.
What?
"Her daughter died." I turned my head and saw Yi-kyung standing there.
I had only spoken to her a few times. She's a little distant, but a nice person when you know her. I have spoken more to her fiance than her.
"Min-ju? When?" She walked closer before offering a hand to help me stand up.
"She wasn't here when the building was locked down, but somehow the next day she ended up outside. Before anyone could reach her a monster killed her in front of everybody." Poor Miss Cha.
I guess she wants to go outside to the body of her daughter.
"I don't blame her for reacting like that," I whisper looking at where she just walked off to.
"I know, but killing herself won't help either." I nodded my head looking back at her.
"Where's Sang-won? Is he still in your apartment?"
A pained look washed over her face.
"No, he wasn't inside when the gates closed. I had tried to call him, but the phones aren't working."
I can only imagine how worried she must be. I wish I could help her with this, but we can't go outside to look for him.
"Knowing Sang-won he will probably be fine. He's smart and knows how to take care of himself."
She nodded her head agreeing with me, but I could see the worry in her eyes.
"Have you seen Eun-hyuk? I need to talk to him." I let out a sigh pointing behind me.
"He was in the backroom talking to the infected just a second ago, he's probably still there." She gave a quick thanks before walking away leaving me alone.
I began to walk to the main hall trying to find something to entertain myself. To my surprise, I saw the guy with the burn scars standing there. Seung-wan was guarding the door looking uncomfortable at the man.
"Move." The man spoke in a low voice.
"You do know what's out there, right?" I spoke moving towards the two men.
The man with the scar didn't give me one look or an answer. My eyes went to Seung-wan and saw sweat beginning to form on his forehead, but he managed to say.
"I.... No, you can't...."
"Open it." My head turned around when I heard Eun-hyuk's voice behind us with Hyun-su behind him.
A frown appeared on my face when I saw him with his backpack and spear in his hand. What's he planning on doing?
"Is this okay?" Seung-wan asked with a concerned voice.
"I don't think we can stop him," Eun-hyuk answers looking at the man with the scars.
I hadn't noticed that Hyun-su had made his way next to me until his arm brushed mine making me look at him. Now seeing him more clearly with more lights I could see how tired he looked. I gave him a small smile before looking back at the door.
The man walked towards the door making Seung-wan flinch while saying.
"You're not supposed to..."
But was quickly cut off when the man began to pull everything away from the door.
"Why do you have your spear?" I asked Hyun-su ignoring the loud noises for a bit.
"Oh...uuh. They want me to get Mister Han."
"Alone? We barely survived the last time when we were with four people." I reminded him, scared something could happen again, but who's going to help him when he's alone and unconscious?
"He'll be fine. Besides, he's not alone." Eun-hyuk answers looking at the man with the burn scars.
I shook my head facing him.
"Yeah, he's totally going to help him. I'll go with them." I insisted, but before I could even say something else the two boys stopped me.
"No!"
I took a step forward so I could see them both.
"Thank you for both your guys' concerns, but I can decide for myself."
"It's too dangerous up there. You could get easily killed." Eun-Hyuk spoke looking at me with a stern look.
"So you're telling me he has to go up there and bring down a man in a wheelchair, two kids, and a woman alone while monsters are running loose upstairs?" I asked him with one eyebrow raised.
"H-." Eun-hyuk started, but I quickly pulled him to the side away from everyone's ears.
"You know I can help him with this," I answered.
"You also can get killed while helping."
I shook my head.
"Apparently I can't, seeing how I survived all the things until now. You can't send him up alone." Eun-hyuk looked at me like he knew that I was right, but didn't want to admit it.
"Like I said before. If you want to keep me here you're going to have to tie me down somewhere." He let out a sigh looking down at his feet before looking back up at me.
"Axe."
"What?" I asked confused.
"Go get you're axe out of the security office. You'll need something to defend yourself with." I nodded my head with a big smile on my face before turning around to get my axe.
While walking away I could hear Eun-hyuk let out a sigh of defeat. If he really wanted me to stay down here, he had to lock me up or tie me down. There's no way in hell that I would let Hyun-su go alone upstairs after what we have seen.
My eyes scan the room quickly before finding my axe leaning against the wall. It was weird to have it back in my hands, but I was happy that I had it to defend myself.
With quick steps, I walk back to the stairs seeing the two boys still standing there and the man with the burn scars on his face opening the door.
It seemed like Hyun-su and Eun-hyuk were arguing, but they quickly stopped when Eun-hyuk met my eyes.
"You found it." Hyun-su turned around to see me nod at Eun-hyuk.
There was a loud noise and we saw the man climbing over the stuff that was barricading the door.
"Let's go, the sooner we start the faster we can come back down here," I spoke up getting the two boys' attention before walking to the door of the stairs.
Just like the man I climbed over the stuff before jumping back off of it into the staircase.  I looked behind me and saw Eun-hyuk whispering something into Hyun-Su's ear. I was wondering what it was seeing how a shocked expression came onto Hyun-Su's face.
My head snapped back to the stairs when I heard something move but quickly saw that it was the man who was kicking something to the side while walking further up the stairs. I look back down and my eyes when to the dark red spot on the floor.
That was probably where we landed. I could have died right there, yet I'm here standing alive and breathing.
"Mi-na? Are you okay?"
Blinking a few times I turn around to face Hyun-su who just stepped off the stuff in front of the door.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Come on we have to catch up with mister grumpy face." I mention towards the stairs.
Luckily for us, he wasn't far from us, so we quickly reached him. Without saying anything he just kept on walking after looking over his shoulder to look at us. We were walking onto the fourth floor and we hadn't seen or heard a thing yet. I looked over my shoulders and saw Hyun-su looking down deep in his thoughts.
"Hey, you okay?" I whisper to him making him look up.
"Y...yeah I'm fine." A frown came to my face when I heard his soft and shaky voice.
"You're sure? Was it something that Eun-hyuk said earlier?" I questioned him before he shook his head.
"No, no it's fine." Taking his word for it I nodded my head looking back in front of me.
Not that I really believed him, but we were already nervous enough walking here where there were monsters that I didn't want to push him further.
