Card Set Hanakotoba
Tumblr media
Recently I was discussing with my lovely friend @istoleyourboat about the meanings behind the flowers in this new card set, and I felt the urge to chronicle them somewhere! I thought you guys might get a kick out of it, too, so this seemed as good a place as any to put it.
So without further ado...
1. Hanako-kun - Queen of the Night
Tumblr media
The Queen of the Night (月下美人) is a cactus flower that blooms just once a year for a single night. Because of this, the most heavily associated meanings with the flower are "transient beauty", "fleeting love," and "the urge to see someone just once."
The short-lived life of this flower feels quite fitting for our ghosty boy! I also like how the flower looks both beautiful and unsettling...all around a fantastic choice by AidaIro.
2. Nene Yashiro - Strawberry Blossoms
Tumblr media
If you have paid attention to the Hanakotoba in TBHK before, then Nene being associated with strawberries should be nothing new to you. Regardless, the prevalent Hanakotoba for Strawberry Blossoms (イチゴ) are "love," "innocence," and "you make me happy."
The "you make me happy" one makes me want to kick my feet around and squeal a little. Isn't that cute!? I also feel the strawberry is especially fitting for Nene because it seems like something she would grow in her Gardening Club.
3. Kou - Clivia
Tumblr media
Otherwise known by the names Bush Lily or Natal Lily, the Hanakotoba for Clivia (君子蘭) are "sincere," "noble" and "good-hearted."
I think this all fits very nicely with our resident good boy Kou, hm?
4. Teru - Bird of Paradise
Tumblr media
The Bird of Paradise (ストレリチア) symbolizes "faithfulness," "magnificence," "a bright future" and "superficial love."
Even at a glance this flower really pops out at you, making it a great fit for the ever-impressive Teru. I really, really love this choice!!
5. Sakura - Hellebore
Tumblr media
Otherwise known as the Christmas Rose, the Hellebore (クリスマスローズ) represents "reminiscence," "never forget me" and "notice my woes."
The way this beautiful flower seems to cast its head down makes it look almost sad. I suppose that's why it has such pitiful meanings associated with it!
6. Natsuhiko - King Protea
Tumblr media Tumblr media
King Protea (キングプロテア), also known as the Sugarbush, symbolizes "strength," "courage," "resilience," and "a king's quality."
If you notice, Natsuhiko always has a little crown-shaped tuft hidden in his hair, so AidaIro associating Natsuhiko with a flower that references royalty pleases me. There's still a lot of mystery surrounding him, but we can at least confirm that Natsuhiko is, indeed, strong and resilient.
7. Akane - Ivy
Tumblr media
The plain, non-flowering ivy stands out in stark contrast to the other plants here, but that's because the hanakotoba for it is just that good. Ivy (ヘデラ) means "everlasting love," "I take this feeling to the afterlife," "faithfulness", and "marriage."
Like, if that doesn't scream Akane, I don't know what does.
8. Aoi - Hydrangea
Tumblr media
Again, if you've been paying attention to Hanakotoba in the series, this will not be the first time you've seen Aoi paired with hydrangea. Regardless, hydrangea (アジサイ) represents "enduring love," "mystique," and "fickleness."
The hydrangea is also associated with rejection, more specifically the coldness of a person who rejects the romantic advances of another. It's just such a perfect Aoi flower, there's no wonder AidaIro is so attached to it.
💐🌸🌼🌻🌷🌹🥀🌺
Thank you for reading till the end! And I urge you to look up these flowers yourself and see if you can find any meaning to them I may have missed. You might find something brilliant that I completely overlooked!

I haven't seen anyone else do this, so I'm gonna try and see if I can make out what flowers are in the bg of the 5 mtp character cards you get during scene transitions in the anime (and as a bonus, some language behind the flowers based off Hanakotoba)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
William has white lilies (which are also seen in the first opening), which represent purity
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Albert very obviously has red roses, which are well-known to represent love
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't immediately recognize the flowers Louis has, but after a quick search it seems that they're daffodils, which represent respect
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sherlock has some very lovely blue irises (which I'm quite fond of myself), and they represent loyalty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last but certainly not least is John! His was the hardest for me to identify bc I'll be honest, I'm not that knowledgeable in identifying flowers. However, I'm like 95% sure he has crossandras; I couldn't find what they mean in Hanakotoba tho, and upon further research, I couldn't even find if they symbolize anything :( I do know now, however, that they're called "firecracker" flowers for their explosive seed pods tho, so there's smth at least..

Hanakotoba Analysis
Tumblr media
Cheng Xiaoshi/Toki -> Daisy (Bellis)
Tumblr media
Cheng Xiaoshi/Toki’s official flower is the Daisy (Bellis) as pictured on his official birthday artwork. Daisies are known as chú jú (雏菊) in Chinese and hinagiku (雛菊) in Japanese. This flower is associated with the meanings of “innocence”, “devotion”, “justice”, “charity” and “beauty” in English floriography. Its hanakotoba meanings are “peace”, “hope”, “beauty” and “chastity”. In Japanese culture, daisies are also often associated with new beginnings and are thought to bring joy and happiness to those whom it is gifted.  In China, the flower is mainly associated with innocence, purity, hope, and new beginnings. Additionally, they can symbolize simplicity, sincerity, springtime, happiness, and new love.  Cheng Xiaoshi is best described as someone with a good heart whose playful, stubborn and impulsive nature can be interpreted by others as being childish and irresponsible. He is extremely sensitive and deeply empathetic with a strong sense of justice. These characteristics paired with his impulsiveness often not only lead to him making decisions with his heart rather than his head—landing not only himself but also those around him in a myriad of tricky situations—but also result in him doing things that are in the best interest of others but are detrimental to himself. These traits tie into the flower’s meanings of justice, charity and devotion. His seemingly boundless optimism and upbeat personality complement the flower’s meanings of joy, happiness, and springtime. When Lu Guang was asked by Qiao Ling, what attracted him to Cheng Xiaoshi, he stated that it was the other’s naivety. This ties into the flower’s meanings of innocence, sincerity, purity and simplicity. Cheng Xiaoshi has the ability to enter the time of any photo by possessing the body of the person who took the photo. Using this ability, he is able to directly change the events within a 12-hour timeline of the photo (i.e., alter past events). This ties into the daisy’s meanings of new beginnings and hope.  Additionally, when using this ability, Cheng Xiaoshi’s eyes turn gold-yellow which corresponds with the yellow-centre of the daisy.
Lu Guang/Hikaru -> Forget-me-not
Tumblr media
Lu Guang/Hikaru’s official flower is the forget-me-not as pictured on his official birthday artwork. The forget-me-not (Myosotis) is known as wù wàng wǒ  (勿忘我) in Chinese and wasurenagusa (勿忘草) in Japanese. As its name suggests the flower is associated with the meanings of “true love” and “memories” in English floriography. Its Japanese name means “don’t forget me” thus associating the flower with its hanakotoba meanings of “true love” and “remembrance”. In China, the flower is associated with not only true love and memories but also fidelity and faithfulness. Lu Guang is typically calm, patient, responsible and uptight. Although not always blatantly obvious, Lu Guang cares deeply for his friends and always does things that are in their best interest. Although typically stoic and cautious, when those important to Lu Guang are in danger, he will break his usual calm façade and show anger and concern as well as pull off precarious manoeuvres to save them. These traits tie into the flower’s meanings of faithfulness and fidelity. Lu Guang has the ability to see everything that happens within a 12-hour timeframe after a photo has been taken. Photographs are able to capture important moments with loved ones in order to be preserved and looked back upon at a later date. Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi’s abilities rely on photographs and are used to analyse and manipulate memories, respectively. This further links Lu Guang to the forget-me-not flower. Additionally, when using their respective abilities Lu Guang’s eyes turn ice-blue whereas Cheng Xiaoshi’s turn gold-yellow which corresponds with the yellow-centred, blue blossoms of the forget-me-not, respectively. Click here for further analysis of Lu Guang given new information from season 2.
Qiao Ling/Rin -> Hyacinth
Tumblr media
Qiao Ling/Rin’s official flower is the hyacinth as pictured on her official birthday artwork. The hyacinth (Hyacinthus) is known as fēng xìn zǐ (风信子) in Chinese and haiashinsu (ヒヤシンス) in Japanese. The hyacinth is seen as a symbol of sophistication, refinement, grace and elegance in English floriography. It is also known as a symbol of love and passion. It is also sometimes associated with rashness, games and rebirth. Its hanakotoba meanings are friendship, affection and “love beyond sorrow”. The bright colours of hyacinths are said to represent joy and happiness―and is thus seen as a gesture of goodwill when gifted to others in Japanese culture. In China, the flower is associated with good luck and fortune and is thus often used during special occasions and celebrations as an auspicious decoration. It is said that the hyacinth’s bright colours and cheerful blossoms bring prosperity and good luck to those who see it. Qiao Ling is best described as outspoken, expressive, and compassionate. She deeply trusts those she is close to and is very protective over them. Qiao Ling typically possesses a playful and upbeat personality. These traits tie into the hyacinth’s meanings of joy, passion, friendship and goodwill. Although often seen bickering with Cheng Xiaoshi―she retains an air of gracefulness and ladylikeness and often dresses very stylishly, which fits in with the flower’s meanings of elegance, grace and sophistication.
Official Art Celebrating 400 Million Views
Tumblr media
In this official art the flower bouquet that Cheng Xiaoshi is holding might be his official flower the daisy (Bellis) but could also be camomile flowers. Camomile also known as chamomile is a daisy-like plant in the same family as the Bellis genus (Asteraceae family). Camomile is known as  yáng gān jú (洋甘菊) in Chinese and kamomīru (カモミール) in Japanese. In English floriography, the flower represents the concepts of having “patience in adversity” and “energy in adversity”. In hanakotoba, the flower conveys the meanings of “enduring adversity” and the “power to be born in adversity”. Both the English and Japanese meanings derive from the fact that camomile grows like a creeper on the ground and persists even if trampled on―even growing stronger the more it is stepped on. These meanings greatly complement Cheng Xiaoshi’s immense optimism, endurance, and perseverance that persists despite him being faced with difficult circumstances and harsh obstacles.
Tumblr media
In this official artwork, Lu Guang isn’t pictured with his official flower, the forget-me-not but is instead pictured with a bouquet of statice.  Statice (Limonium) is also known as sea lavender and marsh rosemary despite not being related to either lavender or rosemary. Statice is known as bǔxuè cǎo shǔ (补血草属) in Chinese and sutāchisu (スターチス) in Japanese. Similarly, to forget-me-nots, this flower is associated with memory and remembrance. In English floriography, this flower represents “longing”, “remembrance”, “success” and “sympathy”. Purple statice in particular represents suppleness and elegance. The hanakotoba meanings associated with statice are “unchanging heart” and “uninterrupted memory”. The vibrant colour of these flowers does not fade even when dried. This attribute has resulted in its hanakotoba meanings “unchanging heart”, “uninterrupted memory”, and “eternal immutability”.  These meanings are similar to that of the forget-me-not and consequently complement Lu Guang’s character in a similar manner.

[P.S. If anyone knows which two flowers are in the very first image in this post (i.e., the season 2 key visual), please let me know so I can add them...I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Also, if I've gotten any of the kanji, romaji, hanzi or pinyin incorrect, feel free to correct me]

Ch198, Cover art flower language
@jack-littlecrow asks on this post what Sebastian's carrying in the cover art.
Tumblr media
First off, Finny is carrying that decent-sized fir tree around like it's nothing, as expected of him. Germanic peoples were decorating such trees for Winter Solstice long before it became a Christmas tradition. To Pagans, such trees decorated with lights meant light after the dark, everlasting life, as well as fertility. To Christians, the decorated tree, particularly with lights, is symbolic of Jesus being a light in the dark world. It's also seen as a symbol of the Tree of Life in Eden.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All the Christians had to do was ascribe that light in the dark to Jesus and make the everlasting life part of it harken back to the Book of Genesis.
What Sebastian is carrying was also used in an ancient Pagan tradition before it became a staple of Victorian winter-time decorations. It's not as popular now as the trees still are, but you will still see references to them, and some people still bring real or fake ones into their homes. It's also a type of evergreen, but of a very different nature.
Mistletoe.
Tumblr media
In Victorian and other western flower languages, mistletoe is given meanings like these: love/romance, friendship, life/vitality, survival during hardship, wisdom, and even fertility.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hanakotoba, or Japanese flower language, gives similar meanings about love/romance and surmounting difficulties.
Tumblr media
As a contracted demon, Sebastian is all about surmounting difficulties for his young master. And by this time, our earl's mere existence is a testament to survival during hardship.
But also keep in mind that mistletoe is a poisonous and parasitic plant.
So, the mistletoe emphasizes that Sebastian surmounts difficulties and provides our earl with continued survival during hardship... but he's essentially poison and a parasite.

planedatabase.com/contestants/season_three/group_redone/
these are the first batch of new folk on the Plane! they are what start the little chain reaction of new people being added
Reno Lotus: A straightforward bottle of hand sanitizer. Constantly stressed and on edge (especially after spawning in the Plane), Homesick, and unintentionally rude sometimes. Has a hard time expressing his emotions with most people and ends up bottling up a lot. Other than that he’s very kind and helps decorate/plan, after warming up to everyone and finally venting it definitely helped him. Not all the way to a full recovery, but maybe just enough. Died by unknown causes just as he was getting sent to the Plane, the impact sent him falling backwards into the ground. (sorry if this is odd, i had to rewrite it half awake since tumblr deleted it)
Alma Camellia: A sweet and sleepy box of tissues. Paints in her free time. Is saddened by the recent loss of a loved one and often spends time alone. Cares a lot for the people on the Plane and grows very close to them a while after being teleported. The only person to never ask to see their loved ones on the Plane.
June Amaryllis: A shy, mysterious, and adventurous dropper bottle. Uses sign language mostly and helps folk on the Plane learn it. After being teleported she was very distant for a long time, but soon became friends with Aster and warmed up to everyone else.
Aster Edelweiss: A hyperactive, courageous, but also easily exhausted jingle bell. They spend their time exploring the Plane a lot and giving advice on scenery. They also hang out with Charlotte and June a lot. Met June while exploring and infodumped on her so much they unintentionally became friends. Has a harder time understanding other's emotions.
Other random info:
Amelia is the only one to keep using her nickname despite others around her slowly reverting back to using their real names.
S2 Batch Two's folk might get nicknames :D Its more likely they'll take a spin on older names rather than a entirely new name (since human names are odd to them as it isn't common to their species)
Older buildings made by the original cast are more boxy shaped while buildings made/planned by added folk are more modern or similar to buildings on earth. Technically slanted roofs are unnecessary since it doesn't rain on the Plane but it felt more comfortable to them. There are mixed of both types of buildings!
Tents began to form around the plug after Liam began to take it out less. Occasionally Liam would still take the plug out to experiment with shrinking objects, but would usually not be able to understand the process of how to do it and procrastinate on it.
Eventually bodies of water would probably be terraformed by Liam, by request. Large lakes, odd rings of water, and the occasional river were gently formed to hold more water than the pool ever could.
sorry if theres any errors/odd stuff my eyes are a little frozen right now so its harder to reread than usual haha

God I do love when Hanahaki art and fics doesn't just default to the basic rose as a sign of romantic love, especially in japanese settings because lemme tell you something, a red camellia in hanakotoba means "in love, perishing with grace" and to me that'll just hit way harder than a simple red rose

Some thoughts about Odasaku.
Do you want something interesting about Odasaku? Wikipedia says: 「家紋は織田信長と同じ「織田木瓜」である。」 Kamon wa Oda Nobunaga to onaji 「 Oda mokkō」dearu.
In Japan mon, or kamon is an emblem used to decorate and identity family or clan. It's similar to European heraldic symbols, but there are some differents. For example, family of any social class could have mon.
Odasaky's family had the same mon as Oda Nobunaga, samurai and one of the Three Unifiers of Japan who lived in sixteenth century. This emblem is called 織田木瓜, oda-mokkō, it's "Oda's Japanese quince flower" but someone says it is melon or bird's nest.
Tumblr media
Mokkō-mon 木瓜紋 is a symbol of survivability. It's also one of ten most known and prestigious kamons.
If you want to learn more about mon you should read the article I found. It's brilliant. Very big brilliant:
There is funny parallel with Odasaku's ability. It's literally ability to survive 😂 Exceptions are the checkmate, something dangerous but slow like poison and the situation when you want to die.
There's also dark irony. Oda-the-writer died when he was 33, Odasaku was killed in his 23, Oda Nobunaga killed himself.
When we speak about bird's nest symbolism, mon means taking care about descendants. And five orphans were Oda's top priority in dark era.
Memento mori, remember death, Mori and meme I must to draw. *laughs nervously*
Interesting parallel between Odasaku and Oda Nobunaga. He waswas the one of the Three Unifiers who started unating of Japan. He killed himself because he was betrayed before important battle.
The Three Unifiers:
Mochi meme about that trio made in nineteenth century (it must be redraw!):
Who are the three unifiers in bsd? There are many trios, dark era's and Mori Fukuzawa and Fukuchi, for example.
木瓜 — Japanese quince
Its a little bit insane, but… 木瓜 (ぼけ) の花言葉は 「平凡」「早熟」「先駆者」。In Japanese flower language, hanakotoba, Japanese quince is:
1) 平凡 heibon — ordinary 2) 早熟 soojuku — early ripening; premature development 3) 先駆者 senkusha — pioneer; trailblazer; herald; forerunner
If you want more hanakotoba for another flowers
Oda, who thought he was ordinary people, in his 14 or 15 was professional in his job like Fukuzawa. And Oda's death was harbinger of changes in the whole bsd plot.
Asagiri-sensei how did you do this?
The quince was wilted Shadows gone from the garden Time to cook curry

Ichigo Kurosaki -> Gloriosa
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aside from the 13 other flowers—which are associated with each of the Soul Society’s thirteen court guard squads respectively—the Gloriosa is also pictured in Bleach’s sixteenth opening theme song. The Gloriosa is also called the glory lily, flame lily and climbing lily. It is known as Gurorioosa (グロリオサ) in Japanese. Its hanakotoba meanings are glory and bravery. In English floriography, they also symbolise passion, purity, beauty and pride. Its name is derived from the Latin word “gloriosus” which means splendid. This name was inspired by its bright, fiery colouration and majestic, wave-like petals. The symbolism invoked by the Gloriosa not only greatly commemorates Bleach’s grand return with the TYBW arc—but also greatly complements Ichigo’s character. Ichigo’s name means to “protect one thing” and he has lived up to his name by bravely fighting in a number of glorious battles to protect those important to him.

Hanamaru - White Roses
The second flower most often associated with Ranmaru Kurosaki is his promise flower: the white rose.
Tumblr media
When All Star After Secret was released back in 2015, each of the Shining Agency boys was assigned a promise flower, representative of the way they each express love. While some of the characters have only had these flowers appear in art and merch pieces, Ranmaru's flower actually plays a huge role in his routes of the visual novel.
Tumblr media
In one route of All Star After Secret, Ranmaru gifts a single white rose to Haruka as a sign of his love and devotion. In another, he takes her to a garden of white roses where he proposes to her with a ring he designed himself that features a rose cut stone. Ranmaru speaks quite fondly about these flowers and shares memories of spending time in rose gardens with his family. So they hold great sentimental meaning to him.
Tumblr media
In pretty much every culture, white roses represent respect, purity, innocence, new beginnings, and everlasting love. In Japanese flower language, they also convey the additional meaning of silence.
Silence may seem like an odd sentiment, but when Ranmaru was once asked for words that would make him fall in love, he said that he and the right person won't need words; the way their eyes meet will convey enough. Love with him is not built on honeyed words and sweet nothings but on mutual respect for one another. Quiet support for his partner and caring actions that speak for themselves.
Tumblr media
Love was a new experience for Ranmaru. Prior to his meeting with the heroine, it was unthinkable for him that he would let another close and into his life. But in falling in love, he was able to move forward on a new, bright road to the future.
Tumblr media
I mentioned previously that I believe that the symbolic meanings of black orchids go hand-in-hand with those of white roses when it comes to Ranmaru. These two flowers may seem pretty dramatically different, but I actually find their contrasting meanings that initially seem at odds to be a beautiful metaphor for the complex and multifaceted individual that he is.
I love Ranmaru's unbridled confidence and ability to command your attention. He’s loud and brash and kind of rude in the manner in which he speaks, but is also incredibly sweet and sincere if you can look past (or rather embrace) his way of expressing himself.
Also, trust is of the utmost importance to Ranmaru. He lost all trust in other people at a young age and is still slow to let others into his life, making him a mystery to those around him. But if you manage to gain his trust then the reward is absolute, undying loyalty.
When Ranmaru pledges everlasting love and says he wants to be with you forever, you know he truly means it with his whole heart and soul. ♡

4. what flower would you like to be given?
11. what’s your ideal date?
26. what movie would you want to live in?
Thanks, same to you!
I really love most flowers, and also all the Hanakotoba (Language of Flowers) meaning. That's how I decided to confess to Kiyo-kun back then.
Now a flower to give myself... I don't know. I'd usually pick sunflowers, but I don't feel their meaning would suit me much.

Doesn't mean it's bad, though. Hm... for at-home dates, I think I'd take movie night AND sleepover combined. Now, usual outing dates, maybe an amusement park or cafe date.

Hm... well, there'd be pros and cons. Like, living in the Human Earthworm universe would make you a potential victim/experiment subject.

I think I'd only live in a movie If I had the power to tackle the script. Something that breaks, or better yet, DEMOLISHES the 4th wall.
