BIG GIANT POST ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE PLAYING TWEWY!!!!!!

CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!

NO I HAVE NOT PLAYED NEO YET!!!! I AM POOR!!!!! PLEASE DON'T SPOIL ME ON IT!!!!!! I've played some of the demo though!!!!!

I first decided to get into twewy last month. I saw that there was a switch version available, but I was unable to play that version. I did, however, have a ds emulator, but after talking to some people I realized I probably would've gotten arthritis playing it on emulator.

When I was just about ready to give up, I decided to watch the first episode of the anime. I enjoyed it a bit.

I was then told to not watch the anime.

So you may be wondering.. "How did you play twewy?"

I played the mobile version. Solo mix. Yeah that one. The one not available for current gen phones.

I found a link to a modded version on an old reddit thread that was updated for current gen android phones, and one of my friends helped me get it set up, and I was finally ready to play.

During my first few hours, I didn't actually like neku all that much. Honestly, he was a dick. i remember what you said about plushies, neku. i will not forgive this as a plushie enthusiast.

While playing the game, I was under the assumption that I would get to change partners whenever once I unlocked it. Rhyme seemed cool, so I was hoping to get to partner with her.

And then the game killed her off.

Despite not knowing anything about rhyme, she was still my favorite character. Besides beat of course, but that's later during week 3.

I remember that I was crying when I first saw her death. I was all like "why did they make such a cool character design, just to kill her off?? that doesn't make sense."

earlier today I saw a tweet on twitter that said "cute cosplay idea for couples!" and it was a rhyme cosplay and a shark costume and I nearly lost my shit laughing, so I guess I'm over it.

When week 1 was ending, I remember feeling like "wait, that's it?" of course, I was wrong.

anyways week 2 now uhh uhhhhhh-

when I first met joshua and learned that I could scan him I was all like "huh???". also excellent foreshadowing there, square enix!

also JOSHUA IS A FRUIT YOU CANNOT TELL ME THIS PERSON ISN'T GAY JUST LOOK AT HIM

at this point, I didn't really know what to expect anymore. the game broke one of its already established rules, "players can't scan other players" so I had no idea what was coming next anymore.

SHO MINAMIMOTO IS HOT!!!!

uhhg. don't got anything else to say about this week except I genuinely thought hanekoma was the composer.

I was extremely shocked to learn that joshua killed neku during this week, and was even more shocked to learn that it was a misfire (and then I learned it wasn't a misfire but that's in week 3 and we haven't gotten to that yet!)

WEEK THREE!!! BEAT TIME!!!

alright, before I started week 3, I actually didn't like beat all that much. that changed a LOT during week 3. he is now one of my favorite characters.

later that week, I had finally learned joshua was the composer and was actually extremely shocked lol.

oh uh I also got spoiled on how beat and rhyme got hit by a car from ign so uhhhh oops

SHO SOMEHOW GOT HOTTER!!!!

I beat the game. I loved the credits theme (and will rewatch the credits later) and really liked how neku threw off his headphones to symbolize how he won't shut himself off from the world anymore.

10/10 game, really enjoyed playing it!

also there was a scene early on where neku went up to a reaper and said I know what you are and I didn't get to screenshot it :(

post-NTWEWY shipping chart, updated w/ commentary

JoshNeku: Post-TWEWY (before AND), I prefer JoshNeku from the original universe, only my own timeline, where Neku gets 3 years not FRIDGED in Shinjuku, but actually alive and gets to finish school before he chooses to stay by Josh’s side in the UG while alive, without sacrificing his RG friendships. So, kind of like Signal to Noise, but different in parts.

Sho/Rindo: I love the imagery of Sho chaotically waltzing Rindo off rooftops as he flies them around in elegant golden circles, maniacally laughing here and there about math. I like the idea that he dispelled of the bird noise on purpose so they wouldn’t over-accumulate on the last day, and that Sho is not pure selfishness and I wanted actual character development for him should he ever succeed the Composer. He will never be suitable if he remains selfish, imo. I want Rindo to have a theme a bit deeper than just dealing with responsibility, as well. But as Rin is in canon, they’re not very suitable for each other, hunh. Regrettable. Maybe if NTWEWY went deeper on themes of apathy and mere self-interest...? But that’s like... the opposite of his very “in-group before all the rest” theme lol...

EriShiki: NTWEWY robbed us. where tf is our confirmation that Gatto Nero is both Eri and Shiki’s brands, huh?! | EriShiki used to be my ideal relationship bc I used to be a fashion major and wanted a Shiki to my Eri :’)

Hane←Neku: Idol-crush, admiration, deep respect, and some leftover bitterness but ultimately forgiveness. I like things subtle and lovely, and very tactful on both ends. I like it w/ Neku still being most of all head-over-heels over Josh (regrettably for him). Doting Hanekoma would be lovely. I would love for them to have each other as a muse. I want Hanekoma to see Neku as a light of hope for the UG.

Hane/Hazuki: I just want Hazuki to learn how to give a shit like Neku and Rindo do, yo. imo he needs Hanekoma’s expertise if he’s to ever unfuck Shinjuku lmao lend him out for a deal with the Upper Plane xD

HazRin: I’m eeehh about the ship (not negative, just don’t care that much), but I like the art ppl draw for it. My gripe is that their character designs don’t match for me, that’s it, lol. I’ll only ship it in a specific instance, and maaaybe if a Swallow AU but don’t count on it. I don’t like that Hazuki’s interpretation is so limited/skewed to “he must be evil/weird/--it’s so biased. What, because we were against him at one point, he must be evil? We don’t know anything about him, and I’d rather people not make assumptions. I’d be fine if it didn’t seem like 90%+ of the content lol and some of the art is still nice for that interpretation but yeah, more open-minded takes on Hazuki would be appreciated, thanks. Like. Why is he a social pariah? Dude’s pretty normal? Lots of people don’t feel like they have something they feel that strongly for. It’s normal????? Sure, he scoured a city, but from the viewpoint of an angel...? For all we know the angels were right and Shinjuku really would have poisoned the other grounds. Dude was just following policy, no? If some angels have such a different view of the world, I don’t see the need to judge him for it rather than make him understand. imo people should be more willing to understand before judging others.

Cocogumi: Coco gives me that vibe, lol. and my dream relationship is w/ someone I can do couple cosplays with and go to South Italy in Matera (OTP related...) with for our honeymoon... if we can share hobbies, that’s extra cute. These two are visually appealing, but there isn’t much there either hunh, besides that Coco is doting. And shot Neku (partially) for her lmao...

Rindoka: Acceptable for a het ship for this kind of game, but that’s a low bar lol. Wow, Shouka has an actual personality!! But other than that, they’re a bit boring. Some of the art is cute. That’s it. I mostly dislike it because of ppl who ppl who act like the ship is more than it is, and people who go around bullying/ostracizing others for liking “problematic” ships.

Bret: They’re too similar tbh lol. two dumbasses in an idiot pod

Frin/do: pretty much every frin/do shipper I’ve met besides like 2 are antis. Turned me WAY off of it, but yeah, that Rindo doesn’t seem to care about him as much as like, Shouka for instance, doesn’t help. There just isn’t much there in canon imo, sorry. I don’t care for friends to lovers unless the pining is good personally

Favorite character: SHO MINAMIMOTO. He is EXACTLY my brand of quirky villain. He's this punk nobody who storms around yelling about how great he is, giving himself a math gimmick and the Dadaist garbage sculptures, and then he decides he wants to fight God, but soon finds out this is a futile endeavor, you fucking idiot, I love you

Least Favorite character: I don't really have bad blood toward anyone in TWEWY right now. I used to HAAAATE Joshua for that ending twist but now I'm like "You sure did get me, you little shit" and also I take KHDDD as a direct sequel to TWEWY, so I like to think he got better, which really was the point implied by the original ending - that Neku's refusal to kill him after everything he'd done proved to him that humanity could surprise him, and now he's just like "Oh, I got ATTACHED to the damn kids from my experiment." Actually, I actively LIKE Joshua now.

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Sho Minamimoto x Eliza (Skullgirls), Coco Atarashi x Symonne (Tales of Zestiria), Shiku, Beat/Ai, and you know what Sora ships with everyone he touches so let's just add Sora/Neku on here for crack time

Character I would marry: The Grim Heaper himself. Pi-Face

Character I would be best friends with: LOOK I KNOW SHO IS VERY UNLIKELY TO LIKE ME BUT I WANT TO ATTEMPT IT. Shiki would probably be more open to actual friendship from the get-go though, and I'd want to hang out with both her and Eri because I'm a sucker for background characters with interesting potential but no stage time

a random thought: Uzuki Yashiro has the best outfit in the entire game. Just the best outfit. I would love to cosplay her someday, not because I have any attachment to her whatsoever (I kinda forget about her a lot) but because her blouse is so frickin cute.

An unpopular opinion: I am not optimistic about NEO nor do I think we necessarily needed it

my canon OTP: There isn't much actual romance in this game except Mina/Makoto so you know what? Mina/Makoto is cute and I support it

Non-canon OTP: If I stay out of crossovers this has to be Shiku. Which is weird because I NEVER go that hard for "the main male character gets with the female best friend" but it's cute.

most badass character: Sanae Hanekoma and his "I'm just going to copy the boss forms of not one but TWO of the most powerful characters in the game and you fight them at the same time" schtick

pairing I am not a fan of: Neku/Joshua always makes me feel a little weird because it's built on deception and also Joshua is an adult godlike entity who is probably older than he looks and Neku is a bit young for that for my tastes. But it's not BAD and I see where it comes from. Now, where I'm angry is that I used to be a big fan of Sho Minamimoto/Mitsuki Konishi and I now realize that I was wearing rose-colored glasses and they were just using each other, and MY BOY DESERVES BETTER GOD DAMN IT.

character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): If Sho is a good guy in NEO I'll scream

favourite friendship: LISTEN. We were ROBBED by the lack of screen time between Coco Atarashi and Sho Minamimoto despite her being responsible for his resurrection. Hell, NEO probably is gonna make him resent her or something but I just want him as the evil big bro and her as the evil little sister and they are the Reaper sibs who go dancing down the street singing "That Beautiful Sound" from the B-Ghost musical

Oh my god Coco what are you going to the players???!!! I can’t believe these trailers I have so many theories! Incoming twewy spoilers below.

So it seems like Coco is sorta mad at Joshua for letting the game end as it did, so she’s trapped Neku and Beat in some sort of alternate Shibuya UG. From the direct today we know that the map (which usually is pretty exact to what the real Shibuya, Tokyo is like) has been scrambled. Which means something must be really wrong probably with Joshua who is basically one with the city. Coco says “speak for yourself, Nerd. The Game like, literally can’t go on without Neku...” Its a funny 4th wall break since yea he’s the protagonist and she’s the in-app purchase character, but she says it with a pretty serious face. She could mean the Game can’t continue as in Joshua won’t continue it without him for some reason. Maybe he did get in trouble with the higher ups as Hanekoma mentioned in the secret ending. Everything seemed okay but Joshua was clearly upset then. Then there’s the matter of her resurrecting Sho... Joshua didn’t actually kill him so what happened??? The way she says “theres like, no way were gonna lose” makes me think maybe she was on his side in trying to help him overthrow Joshua and that’s why she resurrected Sho. And she says “Maybe you don’t need him [Neku] but I totez do” Is she trying to use Neku to get to Joshua? But then theres the clip from the Japanese trailer where she says to Neku “He’s not a bad person right?” Meaning Joshua.

I have so many questions and I can’t wait to cosplay this (evil?) little reaper again!
