Art in Odd Places (AiOP): NORMAL
“We will not go back to normal. Normal never was…”Sonya Renee Taylor
The Viral and Racial Pandemic confirms that the structures established for collective order in the United States of America failed. Colleges are run like companies and the criminal justice system like corporations. Corporations are bailed out with trillions of tax-payer’s dollars while citizens are made homeless by eviction. At our nation’s border desperate families are separated, and children caged. Hospitals struggle with depleted resources during a global pandemic, and police continue to brutalize black citizens. All this while the U.S. elected President orders the use of clubs and tear gas on peaceful protesters to enable a quick photo shoot with a bible.
Many in the United States of America clearly do not have the inalienable rights promised to them by the Constitution. The ‘Great American Dream’– championed as the right of every citizen– is a sham. Hard work does not guarantee success for all. Racism, classism, xenophobia, islamophobia, and homophobia are deeply rooted in our democracy. The American Normal is a culture steeped in severe inequities and greed.
Curated by Furusho von Puttkammer, the sixteenth annual Art in Odd Places (AiOP): NORMAL is a public art and performance festival taking place from Avenue C to the Hudson River along 14th st in Manhattan, NY. Innovative multi and interdisciplinary hybrid projects that explore & expose the American Mythos, and actively engage the public, including installation, sculpture, and performance will be presented in the public realm.
Furusho von Puttkammer (Curator): Furusho von Puttkammer is a multimedia artist, independent curator, and music video director whose practice highlights the lives and work of marginalized people. She has worked with artists such as Gavin Rayna Russom (Black Meteoric Star, LCD Sound System), Lanee Bird, Albert Diaz (SAMOS), Zachery Allan Starkey, The Lesbian Herstory Museum, and Bernard Sumner (New Order). von Puttkammer is also the founder of the nomadic performance art night No Material, which showcases emerging artists of all genres in NYC. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA and Honors in Fine Arts. This will be her third year working with Art in Odd Places, her first as a curator.
Yasmeen Abdallah (Curatorial Assistant): Yasmeen Abdallah is an independent curator, interdisciplinary artist, and adjunct professor, navigating socio-political issues within contemporary culture. Abdallah’s work is in public, private, and traveling collections in the U.S. and abroad, and has been a visiting artist at Sarah Lawrence College, Parsons School for Design, Columbia University, Children’s Museum of NYC; University of Massachusetts, Pratt Institute, El Barrio Art Space, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Free City Radio, and Transborder Art. Abdallah is a collective member of ABC No Rio, Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space, and The Hive. She holds degrees in Anthropology,  Studio Art with honors, and Gender Studies from University of Massachusetts, and an MFA in Fine Arts with distinction from Pratt Institute.
Lorelle Pais (Curatorial Assistant): Lorelle Pais is a multidisciplinary artist in Brooklyn NY. Her work centers around her community and her passion for equality and autonomy. She is heavily involved in the community fridge movement and in organizing the community through informative art and educational workshops. She works with children ages 6-14 in digital art education, specializing in photography and animation, and uses her classical piano training to  experiment with instrumental sound art and unconventional music making on the side. Her personal art involves a lot of photographic, video, and sound elements, drawing heavy inspiration from artists like Nam June Paik and Pipilotti Rist. Her current project is to facilitate a free community studio space in Brooklyn for QBIPOC, functioning like a library for marginalized musicians and artists to experiment with otherwise inaccessible equipment. This is Lorelle’s first year at AIOP.
Natalie Ortiz (Curatorial Assistant): Natalie J. Ortiz is a visual artist and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. She works with young students in under-served communities, striving to bridge the gap with culturally responsive arts education. She has exhibited at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, Southern Exposure in San Francisco, The Greenpoint Gallery, and at Ground Floor Gallery in Brooklyn. She has had a number of curatorial projects including a group show containing works by Charles Griffin Farr and Civil Rights Photojournalist Matt Herron at the Sesnon Gallery. She is involved with NYC Crit Club, working alongside co-directors Hilary Doyle and Catherine Haggarty as a social media coordinator. She graduated from the University of California – Santa Cruz, with a BA in Art with Honors. This is her first year at AiOP.

As you might be aware, there is a gigantic list of categories for The Emmys, which has made the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences split up the ceremony into two separate weekends, the first of which is deemed the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. That covers the technical and smaller categories including short form, cinematography, and production design.
This year, Hannah Gadsby rightfully garners an Emmy for her writing on Nanette, Russian Doll and Marvelous Ms. Maisel nabbed many technical awards for their beautifully imagined universes, Fleabag was honored for its spot on casting, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend appropriately got honors for original music and choreography, The Simpsons still has staying power after all these years, and James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke has won the hearts and minds of America.
Also, Megan Amram is still without an Emmy for her An Emmy for Megan web series, which is a huge snub. Also, perhaps, it might be a way to force her to renew her own digital short form series, but she needs to, when all is said and done, win one for her genius satire that points an absurdist mirror at the entertainment biz.

1, 29, 30!!
1. if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?
I’ve had this ask meme in my drafts forever because I never knew the answer to this one question. Tonight I finally remembered the answer.
Read the manga “Koe no Katachi” also known as “A Silent Voice” and pay attention to Yuzuru. Pay attention to her loose sense of gender identity (it’s played off that she’s pretending to be a boy only to protect her sister but honestly it’s much more than that), pay attention to her hobby in photography, pay attention to how she doesn’t care about and does poorly in school due to her inability to spell. Pay attention to her growing up with a disabled older sibling, pay attention to how she would do anything to protect her sibling, pay attention to how her mother pushes her into the shadows in favour of protecting that sibling. Pay attention to the loss she experiences in her immediate family in her pre-teens, pay attention to how her mentality shifts and how she loses interest in the things she used to care about, pay attention to how school is suddenly super important.
Yuzuru is so important to me. So much of who I am is built off of how I grew up, with a older brother with Cerebral Palsy by my side. This situation was apparently so unique that until I found this manga I had zero representation for what my life was like. idk it’s just wild to think about. You don’t have to read Koe no Katachi. It’s extremely sad, deals with subjects of bullying, depression and suicide. Just keep in mind that it’s important to me.
29. Three songs that you connect with right now.
Fuck you Hannah you know I don’t listen to a lot of music. I don’t have a lot of songs that I like and I have a lot less songs that I “connect with”
[This is a lot more “connect with” than my favorite songs rn so keep that in mind. Do I know what that means? lmao no. And whoopsy doopsy I think there’s a theme here how did this happen I didn’t mean for this at all subconscious what does this mean]
I Know a Place- cover by Cavetown
Making the Most of the Night - Carly Rae Jepsen
Silhouettes - Colony House
30. pick one of your favorite quotes.
“Not all exists are created equal.” -Griffin McElroy
Actually, that entire speech is fantastic and I can barely remember any of it because of how hard I was crying. I constantly think about how he starts it though, I constantly think about this one bit. It hit me really hard. It’s both really saddening and somewhat inspiring to me.

Staging the Scene: Photography and the Narrative Tableau
Roland Barthes - Image, Music, Text. Dada Art Movement - Questioned the way art was produced. Staging the Scene: Photography and the Narrative Tableau
The lecture we had this morning aimed to examine the differing ways in which photographs open up possibilities of narrative.
Hannah Hoch - Role of women and how they’re portrayed in magazines/ newspapers at the time – challenges authority of male figures and women are liberated - Mocking the patriarchal system. Her style mirrors the way images crash and collide in our unconscious – making order out of chaos.
Genres carry specific sets of histories, practices, ideological assumptions and expectations, which shift over time to take account of changing cultural formations.
The burden of representation – John Tagg
Photographs attach themselves to the idea of story telling.
The decisive moment – the eye holding everything together to show us a narrative within an image
As soon as we take a picture, it immediately refers to the past – about the way time shifts.
The camera transforms what we see – it doesn’t give us an absolute reflection of reality – it purely frames what we see- playing with time and scale. The photograph fails to match the reality we engage with, but it offers something else through its limitations of the medium.
Madame Yvonde, Self-portrait, 1937
Technology is shaping the type of pictures we can produce and therefore the stories we can tell as a result.
Jeff Wall – making a picture instead of just taking a picture.
Tableau – an arrangement of a scene in order to construct a life – e.g. representation of a social situation.
Photography threatens painting’s ability to replicate ordinary scenes because it can do it more quickly and more efficiently.
Jeff Wall: The Storyteller - Taking body language and gestures from a painting and putting them in a photograph – close scrutiny of paintings and looking at the way people hold themselves.
Claude Cahun, Self-portrait, 1928
Gregory Crewsdon - A New York Times Magazine portfolio
Brian Griffin – ‘work’ series – constructs strange images of businessmen using props and severe, angular cropping – creates a drama being played out that sets up a mystery.
Sarah Jones, Mulberry Lodge, 1997
