Hello Maya! I don't know if you've talked about it, but how do you tackle the task of making a pin design?
I've seen many pin designs and as much the difference between artists' styles is understandable there are some that work better. Im guessing it has something to do with simplicity? Because some details might be lost when translating it into the pin and the limitations it conveys.
So the question is, how do you fit a pin design so it works and looks amazing?, because all your body of work is 👌👌👌👌👌
Do you like making pins?
Is there any insight you could share with us?
i’ve talked about this previously, but it’s been a while i think! there’s also a ton of youtube videos like this one that can help you out with the basics. i also strongly recommend buying copies of “welcome to pin hell” and “the inner circles of pin hell” by hannako lambert. she is a true master of the medium and knows far more than i ever will.
enamel pins are really their own medium and how much you can do with them is really just limited by your own understanding and your budget. you can go as simple and cheap as a simple line drawing with the “fill” areas left empty to be recessed metal, like i did for my bee pin.
Tumblr media
working like this, because the metal linework is raised and unfilled, has the highest amount of fidelity between your original artwork and the end product. you have to remember that enamel pins are extremely small and so intricate work can easily be lost if you’re not careful.
you can also have the empty spaces filled with enamel, like i did with the anodized version of my bee pin.
Tumblr media
this is called soft enamel. this also has a relatively high amount of fidelity to the original artwork. pins like this can also have special treatments of the metal, like the anodization above (i.e. the rainbow), that are only available for soft enamel pin or pins without any enamel. similarly, glitter enamel and similar speciality enamels are only available for soft enamel. i don’t often use soft enamel as it doesn’t suit most of my work, but it was the right fit for the bee pin because the recessed metal/fill did the best job of accentuating the design.
if you fill your pin and then grind down the metal so that it is flush with the enamel, this is called hard enamel. it creates a seamless, cohesive and polished look but because the metal is ground down, it decreases the fidelity of your line work. think of it as a tattoo: soft enamel or no fill is the fresh tattoo, it looks essentially as intended, though if the artist doesn’t know what they’re doing there can already be a loss of detail. hard enamel is like a healed tattoo: the ink will spread and, similarly, when the metal is ground down it may widen slightly. different factories will have different degrees of loss in fidelity depending on the skill of the workers and also how quickly they’re having to work.
Tumblr media
the above pin uses a combination of hard enamel and recessed metal (the lines in the leaves are recessed). this is a pin with a very detailed design that can easily go wrong when not handled carefully. the recessed metal not only looks good and cohesive with the metal, but it also preserves a higher amount of line work fidelity than an enamel fill would, allowing me to be a little more detailed in the design. i also used cut outs give a more delicate feel, despite the sheer size of this thing.
and this is what that same pin looks like when made less skillfully. i would only make pins this detailed if you have history with your manufacturer and know the quality of their work—and if you’re willing to eat the cost of a bad batch. we’d been working with this manu for a few years when they sent us this back and let me tell you, i was crushed. this is maybe my favorite pin i’ve ever designs and apart from hating to waste money and material, it’s disheartening to see my work translated so poorly.
Tumblr media
with enamel, each color must be contained by metal. it’s like a little pocket that you inject color into it. but, you can also screenprint on pins! this is a bit hit or miss, as pins are tiny and it’s super easy for the screen to be misaligned and have it totally fuck up your design, but when it works it’s really lovely! (the white spots on the mushroom and the yellow portion of the flames are screenprinted)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
one of my personal favorite techniques with pins is to use the metal itself not just as line work, but as its own “fill”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these are the most basic techniques, but there’s tons more, including stained glass enamel and pins that are fully 3D sculpted, but i’ve never done those so i’d recommend checking out hannako’s books for info on those.
with all of this, when you work with a manufacturer, you’ll provide them a jpeg not just with the artwork, but with a “guide” for any processes (cuts, recessed metal, metal treatment, screen printing, etc.) and for the pantones. here’s what that looks like (the “x” denotes a cut)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you plan to make a lot of enamel pins i highly recommend getting the set of pantone solid coated and uncoated books so you can accurately pick colors. also these books are expensive so store them out of the light so that their color remains accurate for as long as possible, because they will fade. 🤪
i also highly, highly recommend that you create a backing stamp for your pins. this is a name/logo that just gets pressed into the back. this not only helps people know where their pin is from, but also protects you in the case that a major company decides to steal your pin design.
and since i’ve typed up this whole informational post for y’all, here’s a quick reminder that my pins are currently on sale 😘😘😘

I love your merch! As someone who’s bought a lot of pierces and loves the quality of everything, do you have any tips for someone also looking into making stickers, pins, etc? What sites/manufacturers should be avoided? Which do you like best?
i don't know about who should be avoided & i'm always learning new things when it comes to making my own merch because in my mind i'm still pretty new at this but i'll do my best to send you some recs! for stickers i use stickerapp! their templates are really user-friendly and their colours print so vibrantly even when you kick them over RBG files like i constantly do. i've printed a set of pride stickers and the colours all came back really true to what i wanted (purple prints a TAD dark). you can also ask them for special things in the notes like if you want their UV ink or you want the space between the design and cut line to be a different colour. their MOQ (minimim order quantity) is also pretty low, usually somewhere between 20-30 depending on the size & material of the sticker. the quality is also top-notch. their vinyl stickers really hold up. for pins i go through alibaba which can be kind of an overwhelming experience. luckily, one of the more popular manufacturers made their own website and it looks more "cute artsy con-goer" than "mass manufacturer" and that is vograce! if you want to dive into alibaba and start sending out RFQs (requests for quotes) to manufacturers go for it! there are so many! but vograce is a much more beginner friendly exprience. (also, hannako knows everything there is to know about making enamel pins. buy their book here) if you're interested in books, i use mixam. they make beautiful books, are based in canada (huge boon for me, as a canadian beholden to duty fees) and are happy to hold your hand through the prepress process. they also have templates and their uploading process is very clean and again, in my opinion, beginner friendly! those are all my recs i can think of right now. i'm currently poking my head into POD services for my dog comic, and know very little about it all. merch feels like a constant learning experience haha.

Gun to your head you have to pick your five favorite enamel pins (or the ones you use the most often)
No pressure of course, and you can pick a couple more or less than five
Also I love your art very much!! I just got a friend to pledge for rainbow demonology and I’m debating upping my own pledge before the run ends to get another pin
Thanks for the kind words Anon, and many thanks to you and your friend for your support!
Now onto the favorites. This was tough but here are the ones I picked:

3K Fic Poll August 2022
It's that time of the month again! Time for another fic poll!
And this time it's extra special because
WE REACHED OUR DONATION GOAL!!!
Meaning that whoever wins this poll not only gets a full 3k word fic, but they also get art of it by the wonderful @midnightechoes
But oh boy this is gonna be quite the close match, we got plenty of fantastic ideas and I genuinely don't know which will win this time
Now let's go over our options today
Magic of the Snow Princess - a follow up to the Snow Princess fic in which Whitney Schnee learns her family's semblance from her mom and older sister. And in which I continue my quest to trans every single Schnee's gender
To Capture a Bandit - another sequel, this time to my Raven's Nest fic, in which we follow Bandit!Ruby as she meets Yang's friends and gets down horrendously for all her team mates (focus on Weiss and Emerald)
Hannako "on a date or with a gun?" - one for the rare pair lovers, in which Akko asks to take Hanna out and it takes the poor girl all night to figure out she means "on a date"
Mer...tember? - a party of unique and interesting merfolk goes on an adventure to save a costal down from disaster. Based on my alternative merfolk ideas from (oh god has it really been that long?) 2019
Domestic Life of Fallen Petals - the war is over, Salem is gone, and now Cinder gets to enjoy the redeeming qualities of a cute girl who loves her and that sweet domesticity
If you want to get a vote in just follow this link right here.
Results will be up on the 9th as usual, and don't worry if your idea did not win, as we still have a 1k fic raffle afterwards
also if you'd like to see your own fic ideas in next month's poll or simply want to help me keep the lights on please consider donating to my ko-fi (link on the pinned post), and remember that even the smallest donation can make a world of difference

Demon slayer au part 5
She just sat there for a while. After all what could you do in this situation. Sure she had promised to find her brother and sister, but how? It had been almost 3 years since her 'death' and no one seemed to know where he went after a year ago. All she knew was that they had left heading west with Nezuko in a coma like state.
So that's where she thought to start. Yet, not without working a bit around town first so she could afford to look. Yet where was she to go from there? It had been 3 years! And the world was so big? SO how could she find them?
Well the only place left to go based off of what little information she had was north. So after 4 whole months of hard work while living in the remains of what used to be her home, Hanako headed out. She pasted a village or someone with information for her. Perhaps she would be lucky and she would see someone who knew something within the first day of travel.
That hope of finding information fast was squashed within a day when she stumbled upon nothing but fields for miles within her first week of travel, with a few odd people now and again. Each person she asked if they had any information about her missing older brother and older sister. However, there was nothing. No one seemed to remember seeing two kids pass by to look like her or with those names. Perhaps they had, but it had been 3 years. So who would remember seeing 2 random kids running in the snow 3 years ago when it was Hanko's understanding that people had been going missing more often these days.
So at the end of a week of non stop walking with a few breaks to eat a bit of rations, Hannako let herself stop at a town and rent a cheap room for a night...A room she was given a discount on when explaining to the inn keeper her situation. This seemed to be the only good part about this whole situation, if you were a orphan with no one to look after you, small communities at the moment seemed to take pity on you as you looked for a family member....
A family member she may never find again.
"Maybe it's hopeless..."Hanako whispered to herself looking up at the ceiling above her tearing up listening to people chat and laugh walking to their rooms. She sighed. "Perhaps I deserve this fate...though I would not know why..."
Perhaps she was to be some tragic hero in stories her father used to tell. Those who lost everything and rises up against the pain. Or perhaps she was a villian of sorts meeting a lonely fate for being so harsh to her mother and youngest brother. It was a fate she deserved.
Slowly she turned her head to glance at the moon wondering if her siblings could see it. Maybe they were looking up at it the same time wondering her fate while she wondered theirs. Either way, deep down her heart ached while her mind made her picture them looking up at the moon, seeming to make it a family activity once again in her head.
That is until a scream was heard from outside. Within seconds she bolted up looking out the window to see it.
A woman being chased by a rabid animal...one acting like the creature that had caused her family's death...A woman being chased by a creature...
That's all Hanko knew she saw before seeing the red and rushing after the group...then when she came to and saw no more red she found herself standing in an alley way with an iron taste in her mouth with the young woman looking at her.

//
Hannah sipped loudly from her cup, eyes bored, but inwardly absolutely amused as she watched Diana's mechanically stiff movements. The girl could not go into her classroom any slower.
Diana had been having difficulty entering the room; the thought of meeting Atsuko so soon- after that weird chain of events they had sprung on her- was daunting.
Yet Hannah wanted to see to it that Diana would attend her next class. She was waiting for her to go in already before walking over to her own a few rooms down.
She would not- could not- let Diana get away and lessen their chances of capturing one Kagari Atsuko.
Oh, the thought of that girl sent a jolt of excitement up Hannah's spine. The things they could do to the adorable, almost puppy-like bean once they were together.
Ah, but Diana Cavendish was so hell-bent on patience, chivalry, and her century-old idea of 'courtship' that would probably leave them all dried out by the time they got to the first date. It was a little annoying.
It simply wouldn't do.
That's why Hannah and Barbara were here. After noticing their lovely girlfriend struggle the past few months or so with hidden feelings that they could not interpret as anything else than the beginnings of another love, they had decided that it wasn't so bad to help her out and give her the happiness she very clearly deserved.
Okay, and maybe they found Atsuko super cute. After observing her the past few weeks- just to be sure she was good for Diana because scouting was important if they wanted what was best for her- they had come to also adore the honest, bubbly, and incredibly sweet girl who went to the park after school to feed random birds and animals, and gave children sweets after performing rather impressive magic tricks.
Hannah sighed her thoughts away, turning back to her useless girlfriend to confirm that she had made no progress at all in getting to her class. As expected.
Hannah could only watch on helplessly. She was not about to ruin her pretty image by barbarically dragging her girlfriend into the room. Not yet. That was only for desperate times.
Now was... not so desperate.
After what felt like forever congested into the last ten minutes of Diana's- and by extension, Hannah's- struggle, the oaf of a blonde genius finally managed to take a step into the lecture hall.
-only to peek back out at a speed contrasting the time it took to enter the room.
Hannah simply raised a brow, a silent, "What." being expressed.
"She's not here yet!" Diana whisper-shouted in panic. "I should've remembered she'd usually not be early! She's never here early! Hannah!"
Hannah only took another sip from her straw still, rolling her eyes at her girlfriend's rare display of desperate whininess.
Such a baby sometimes. She was definitely going to tell aunt Bernadette when they met up again. Just so they could tease Diana together.
"Calm down, sweet. Just go wait for her inside then or something." Hannah finally responded, sipping the last of her iced coffee before tossing the empty container into a nearby bin. "It's not like she'd skip class to avoid you."
"..."
"No way." Hannah could have laughed as Diana silently confirmed that Kagari Atsuko would definitely do something like that.
Oh great.
Two pains to deal with now.
She should've asked Barbara to come along.
Suddenly she heard a squeak from behind her. Hannah quickly turned around and a grin formed immediately on her face.
'Well, well. How perfect.'
Just the one they had been looking for, who was about to turn around and leave- about to bolt for dear life.
Not like Hannah would let her.
Preparing her sweetest smile and voice, she called the girl's name, skipping in her direction, snaking an arm around her waist before planting a greeting kiss on her cheek.
"Atsuko~"
"EEEEE-!  M-Miss England!"
"Oh, come on. Don't be so cold now! Call me Hannah~. Han-nah. <3"
From the corner of her eye she could see Diana sporting a scowl.
'Oh? Already jealous?'
It only tempted Hannah to mess with the pair even more. This was actually turning out to be quite fun. Maybe patience really was a virtue worth its price.
"Come now, let's get to class." She cheerfully linked arms with Atsuko, dragging her into the biochemistry class, past a Diana whose jaw hung slack.
----
Diana snapped out of her stupor soon enough, marching after the pair into the room.
"Wait a second, Hannah." Diana glared at her girlfriend, noting that Hannah had stolen her seat next to Miss Kagari. She nudged the girl over, the three of them now sat- squeezed together- at one table usually meant for only two. "You don't have this class." She pointed out bitterly, hoping Hannah would take the hint and leave.
Her frown deepened as Hannah simply smirked that one way that Diana knew meant that Hannah would do as she pleased regardless of anything or anyone.
"I do now~."
//
Lunch.
Finally. Thank god, Diana thought.
...or not.
If her morning dedicated to labs was already difficult with Hannah hanging around, Barbara taking a seat next to Miss Kagari at the table doubled her hardships.
Really. Couldn't these two see that they were making her cru- frien... wait. That wasn't it either. Just what... was Kagari Atsuko to her at the moment then?
She glanced at the trio again, her girlfriends taking turns happily feeding the poor girl in the middle who could only smile and nod, afraid of rejecting their advances.
She should really learn to speak up, that Kagari Atsuko.
Then again, she couldn't blame her. This was something she had also experienced back then, when she first started dating Hannah and Barbara.
Diana sighed, not really knowing what to do anymore.
"Yieee-!"
Diana swiftly became alert, already up from her seat and walking over to where Miss Kagari was bright red and apologizing to the people around for disturbing the peaceful lunch hours with her noise.
Diana was toeing a very fine line of patience, having been tested all morning. Hannah and Barbara were going too far with their touchiness and teasing! Hadn't they discussed that they'd go into this gently! Courtship! Kagari Atsuko deserved the best of it!
This wasn't it!
And Hannah slipping her hand onto Akko's thigh was the last straw for Diana.
Quickly, she took that hand off, taking Akko's and leading her out towards the courtyard to get some fresh air. For Akko or for herself? She didn't really know.
In her blind emotion, Diana had failed to realize some things. One was that she had dragged her partner half way across the school building, subconsciously wanting to be as far from her stressors as possible; and two, they were now alone. Something that never happened outside of lab activities.
As soon as it came to her awareness, she whirled around to face the girl she had roughly tugged along behind her, bowing in deep apology. "I'm truly sorry, Miss Kagari!" She hadn't really thought of what to do after that.
Peeking up at Akko, she saw a flustered expression that made her heart flutter in her chest. Everything about her was just so, so enticing. Maybe she'd admit to understanding her girlfriends' desires to act the way they did around the Japanese girl.
Caught in a moment unaware, her lips loosened, speaking a blaring thought she had believed she'd suppressed at the back of her mind for so long.
"May I formally court you?"
She felt her eyes widen as Akko's did as well.
There. She'd said it. She'd finally said it.
She just hoped that Akko would let her down easy if in case rejection was her choice of answer-
"H-how... How does it work?" Was the tiny voice's response in the form of a question of her own.
"Huh?"
"This... thing. Relationship. Of yours." She wrung her shirt in her hands, twisting nervously. She didn't seem to be asking out of judgment, rather it was out of genuine curiosity. "I mean... if I'm going to-to be a part of it, I'd like to know... y'know?" She grinned this crooked silly grin that made Diana blush.
'Super cute' -as Hannah had put it, Akko was.
"W-well... I... um..." Come now, Diana Cavendish. Where did the valedictorian of her graduating class go? She needed to explain it clearly, and simple as possible at the same time. "It's... we love each other... equally...?"
'Oh, bury me alive.'
"I... see." Atsuko hummed, staring at her shoes for a bit, face scrunched up in deep thought.
Diana needed to do something. Say something to clear up any confusion the other girl might have acquired after her failure of an explanation.
"Y-You don't have to erm... 'love' as all at once. Or force yourself to be in a relationship with us all- um... odd as it may sound... that you'd date only one of us while we date each other. Oh but... That... doesn't sound very fair on your part, does it?" Diana chuckled awkwardly, one of her hands circling the opposite wrist, seeking comfort in the sensation.
Aahhh, she'd definitely messed it up now. Maybe having Hannah and Barbara around was a better game plan when it came to Kagari Atsuko. Diana braced herself for the worst.
The worst... didn't come.
"I want to try."
If anything, it was the best?
"W-whu?" Diana's gaze zoned in on the blushing woman in front of her, shoes scuffing the dirt, hands fidgeting together. She was clearly flustered. Not that Diana was any better. Especially not after the bomb that would drop on her next.
"I actually... like you... Miss Cavendish."
"Well, shit."
"Eh?"
"Oh! Oh no! Shit as in... no, um...not in the bad sense! Shit as in, the good shit- dear lord, what have I been spouting I'll shut up right away, right now, I- I'm..." Shamefully stupid as she was being, she couldn't help the smile that was beginning to make her cheeks hurt by how wide it had spread across her face. "I'm so happy, Mi-Miss Ka... no.... Atsuko. Atsuko... At-canIcallyouthat?”
She received a dumbfounded nod. One she was most grateful for.
She took a deep breath. “I... I also... I fancy you." She confessed in her own odd way that definitely confused Atsuko.
"Thanks?"
"It means I like you."
"Oh."
"..."
"Oh."
Diana couldn’t quite name all the emotions that had so quickly flashed across Atsuko’s face. She hoped they meant good things?
"Well, shit."
Good things.
"Right?" Diana began chuckling, unable to help herself. She felt over the moon, flying high up like a witch on a broom above the clouds. Or was Atsuko the witch? Casting a spell on her, making her all sorts of weird.
Did it matter now though?
Hardly.
If anything, she liked this love spell that had bewitched her.
"May I... May I walk you home after class later?" She mustered up the courage to ask, patting herself on the back for being rather progressive. She was feeling a bit more confident compared to earlier. Her composure was beginning to return to her, and her calm indicated that she was getting used to interacting with her new potential lover.
And then the girl smiled.
All of that organization of mind flew out the window.
"I'd love to walk home with you, D-Diana."
Ah. The finishing blow.
"Th-th-th-th-that's! Sounds perfect! Ha! Haha! Ha...ha... I, then we should-" Diana should remember how breathing felt. Suddenly, her head was spinning, vision tunneling. She vaguely heard the lunch bell go off somewhere in the background. "Class! Class, time to go back and-"
She missed the way Atsuko's eyes widened in panic, looking behind Diana and reaching for naught.
"Eh? D-Diana, wait! There's a-"
Tree.
Before she could even think of kissing Atsuko, she first kissed a tree.
Progress.
//-//
Extra:
"You think it worked?"
"Obviously. My plans always work."
"Our plans, babe." Barbara giggled, leaning her head against Hannah's shoulder, relishing in its warmth and comfort. It was fun to tease the pair while it lasted, but she couldn't help but wonder if it was all okay. "We didn't... push too far, did we? Make them uncomfortable or anything?"
Hannah nuzzled the top of her head, planting a kiss there. "I'm pretty sure we did." She sighed. "But would it have been as effective if we didn't?"
"I suppose not."
"Mm." Hannah hummed. "We can just apologize when this is all over and laugh it off."
Barbara turned to her, giggling, a teasing glint in her eyes. "You hate apologizing, luv."
"I know." Hannah laughed along. "That's why I'm hoping it goes great and Diana forgets all about it."
Barbara agreed with that one. She knew she was equally in trouble.
They hoped for the best. If all went according to their little scheme, Diana would be coming back with a girl that was already half their girlfriend. Just a little more to go. Then they could get to all the 'fun things'  that came with being in a relationship.
Right.
Still though...
 "They're rather useless."
"No truer words have been spoken."
